The whole world was watching “Squid Game” in the first three days after its Season 3 premiere. The dystopian thriller from director Hwang Dong-hyuk debuted at No. 1 in all 93 countries where Netflix ranks its viewership — a first for the streamer. The final season also secured 60.1 million views globally in its first three days — another first.
And its viewership is only expected to grow. The first season is still the most-watched title of all time, with 265.2 million views in its first 90 days. As for Season 2, that ranks as the third most-watched series ever behind “Wednesday” with 192.6 million views.
This isn’t a fluke or even a “Squid Game”-specific phenomenon. In 2023, the streamer pledged to spend $2.5 billion in South Korea over the next four years. As Netflix has increased its investment in Korean shows and movies, viewers have embraced this subgenre. A study commissioned by Netflix from the independent research firm 2Cv...

Anime rarely cracks the top tiers of mainstream Western TV rankings, but 2025's second season of Solo Leveling is proving to be a different story. IMDb’s recently released list of the top-rated shows of the year includes just one anime, and it is a major one. In a field dominated by global dramas and prestige live-action series, Solo Leveling's inclusion is no small feat.
While series like When Life Gives You Tangerines, Invincible, and Severance are also riding high on critical and fan acclaim, Solo Leveling stands out as the only anime entry to make the cut. It shows a wider shift in audience tastes and a growing appetite for high-quality anime with global storytelling appeal.

Netflix seems to be working extra hard when it comes to its K-content. Following brilliant K-dramas like When Life Gives You Tangerines, Sweet Home, The Glory, and more, the streaming giant just introduced a new K-pop inspired film, K-Pop Demon Hunters.
An animated musical fantasy film, which was recently released on the platform with incredible reviews, it shares a link with the ssmash hit Netflix series Squid Game. Apparently, Lee Byung-hun, who is the antagonist in the reality TV-esque show, also voices the main villain in the animated film, creating an unlikely connection between the two.

The highly anticipated Park Bo-Gum K-drama, Good Boy, has finally come out, and it’s exactly what we’ve been needing. After When Life Gives You Tangerines, the actor has now returned in a comedy-action that is also deeply moving and shows off his acting skills in the best way. Good Boy is a police procedural in which former athletes are now cops trying to solve a major case that involves the death of people they each know. Episodes 1-4 are intense, and we already have a major death in the show, which was quite unexpected, especially seeing as the show is a comedy rather than a serious action-thriller. But it’s still supremely fun, and I can’t wait to see what’s coming next. But with that said, let’s jump straight into episodes 1 to 4.

Arguably, the best Korean drama of the year, if not beyond, comes from the quiet shores of Jeju Island. While many of the others tend to lean into fantasy, “When Life Gives You Tangerines” successfully appeals to audiences by grounding itself in reality, offering a narrative that resonates deeply with everyday life.

The story closely follows Oh Ae-sun, the daughter of a haenyeo (female diver), from the early 1950s to the 21st century. Divided into four parts, the work reflects the changing seasons of her life. It begins with her rocky childhood, where she blooms like a spring flower regardless of the hardships she has to go through. Beside her is Yang Gwan-sik, a quiet yet determined boy who cares deeply for Ae-sun despite his family’s disapproval. We then move into the summer of their life as a married couple.

“When Life Gives You Tangerines,” the narrative of Jeon Gwang-rye and her daughter Ae-sun flows like a wave, drawing us into the complicated, often stormy realm of mother-daughter relationships. At its core lies a quiet, agonizing truth: motherhood is made up of unseen labours, silent love, and sacrifices woven into the fabric of daily existence. Gwang-rye, a haenyeo (female deep-sea diver), personifies these unseen energies with elegance and strength, demonstrating the unwavering tenacity of moms everywhere.
The water shapes her life—brutal, icy, and unforgiving—but so does an undying love for her children, particularly Ae-sun. Gwang-rye dives into dangerous seas every day, not merely for survival, but also for a better future than her own. Through the salt and solitude, her body becomes a map of sacrifice, with wrinkled fingertips, exhausted lungs, and calloused strength. Nonetheless, her love endures, even when it is unsaid or misunderstood.

Pope Francis died on April 21, one day before Conclave came to Amazon Prime Video (and a few weeks after it left Peacock). But there was another pope-themed film available for streaming subscribers — and it took off on Netflix.
The Two Popes, a 2019 Oscar-winning film about the relationship between Francis (Jonathan Pryce) and his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins), returned to Netflix’s top 10. Its viewership increased by more than 30x the prior week, Netflix said, when Pope Francis was ailing but still alive.
From April 21-27, The Two Popes reached the Netflix top 10 in 27 countries, racking up 3.2 million global views.
That view tally was good enough for eighth place last week among all English-language movies on Netflix. Tom Hardy’s Havoc topped the list with 29.8 million views in just its first three days of availability, nearly tripling TV’s top performer, the premiere of You season five (10.1 million views...

Disney+ is continuing its strong push into Korean content with “Nine Puzzles,” a cerebral crime thriller starring Kim Dami (“Itaewon Class”) and Son Sukku (“Big Bet”).
The 11-episode series follows Yoon Ena, a high school student who discovers her uncle’s murdered body next to a single puzzle piece. Initially the prime suspect, Ena reemerges a decade later as a criminal profiler only to find herself entangled in a new series of murders — each victim connected by puzzle pieces similar to the one from her uncle’s crime scene.
The series brings together notable Korean talent beyond its leads, with Kim Sungkyun as Police Captain Yang Jungho and Hyun Bongsik as Junior Detective Choi San. Behind the camera, “Narco Saints” director Yoon Jongbin helms the project from a script by Lee Eunmi.
The first six episodes will drop May 21 on Disney+ internationally, with U.S. viewers accessing the content through Hulu.

The Asian filmscape is generally much more sentimental than its Western counterpart. This is not to say that the West doesn’t make emotional films; they very well do, but the values of family, togetherness, and community vs. the individualistic mindset of the West often translates in Asian film and TV. As an Asian person myself, this sticks out to me, and it can occasionally feel overwhelming on the emotions. Recent examples include When Life Gives You Tangerines or Girls Will Be Girls, and of course, the Thai film How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. While they’re emotional in varying degrees, the end result is a profound sensation. No, I don’t think Frozen Hot Boys is anywhere near this category of very beautiful films, but it’s still got that looming sentimentality that makes it worth a watch.

After an unforgettable March thanks to When Life Gives You Tangerines, it’s honestly hard to top that with anything new on Friday. Yet, the K-drama industry is ready with a dark 6-part thriller starring some of the industry’s biggest actors and still failing to deliver anything actually exciting. What I find really interesting is how we went from having some Webtoon/web novels/graphic novels turned into K-dramas, which was fun and exciting, to having a dozen of them come out every month. Are we really going into the quantity-over-quality zone for K-dramas now? I would hope not, but if that is the case, Karma might be a victim of the curse of overdoing it. On average, I might be watching 4 K-dramas a month at the very least, so if you’re new to Dramaworld, then take what I say with a grain of salt because you’re...

The Korean title of When Life Gives You Tangerines is a tad bit different from its English one. Actually, it’s a whole lot different. In Korean, after someone’s finished work, they say “you’ve worked hard” or “you’ve done well” at the end of the day. The show is set on the beautiful Jeju Island. The tiny island situated away from the mainland has its own dialect, its own speciality foods, slang etc. In Jeju, they say “Pokssak Sokatsooda” at the end of the day. The Korean title signifies the feeling that children feel towards their parents. Throughout the show, we see Geum-Myeong and Eun-Myeong fight with their parents, yell at them, and tell them they’ve not done enough, but at the end of the show, Geum-Myeong says her thanks to her parents through a sweet little letter, which ends with these exact words: “Pokssak Sokatsooda,...

When Life Gives You Tangerines is generational trauma in the form of a TV show. Nah, I’m only kidding; it is a multigenerational show that spans decades and leaves us with many tears and a burning hope for a man like Gwan-Sik. The show is split into two main timelines: one is Ae-Sun’s and the other is her daughter, Geum-Myeong’s. Initially, when we don’t know anything about the show, this feels slightly confusing, especially because Iu plays both Ae-Sun and Geum-Myeong. But the series makes it abundantly clear who is who through the difference in their behavior, appearance, and, of course, because it starts to become a comprehensive story that slowly but surely comes together as we go from volume to volume. I do quite enjoy that the show was dropped in 4 volumes that go from Ae-Sun’s childhood to young adulthood to middle age and then finally old age.

Episode 14 of When Life Gives You Tangerines is almost like a stand-alone episode because it shifts narratives from Geum-Myeong, the eldest, competent, perfect daughter of the Yang family, to Eun-Myeong, the not-so-perfect second child who was reminded that he will always be only second-best. At the end of thirteenth episode of the show, Eun-Myeong is arrested soon after Geum-Myeong’s wedding. In episode 14, we see Ae-Sun’s struggles of juggling being a good mother and being a good mother to her daughter. I think you’ll understand this a bit more once we get further into this episode. But after every cold winter comes a bright and beautiful spring full of risks, and boy, does this family take its risks. This episode definitely feels a little bit weaker than the rest of the show overall, but this is not to say it’s a bad episode. It’s just different somehow,...

When Life Gives You Tangerines episode 16 is earth-shattering in a way that will make you cry for over 20 minutes straight. They say all good things must come to an end, but for a family like the Yangs, it is just as they taste the sweet tangerines that they’re taken away from them as if they don’t deserve it. This is a bit dramatic, but we all know that the Yangs have been through a lot, but it is quite realistic and really reminds us of how precious our lives are on earth. Also, how important it is to always tell our loved ones how we really feel in our hearts. The final episode of the show switches gears and focuses more on Ae-Sun and Geum-Myeong’s relationship with Gwan-Sik. It might be one of the saddest TV episodes I’ve ever seen. But, with that said, let’s...

In episode 13 of When Life Gives You Tangerines, we watch Geum-Myeong and the family struggle through the Asian financial crisis of 1997. But when one door closes, another one opens to a beautiful unknown world. Well, this winter is definitely a hard one for them, but the family marches forward as always. While it may seem initially that this episode will not hurt you in any way, I’d still urge you to keep your tissues ready for the end of the episode. All this time I’ve been talking about how this show is mainly focused on mother-daughter relationships. I can’t just leave the father of the century, Mr. Gwan-Sik, out of the picture. Gwan-Sik and Geum-Myeong’s relationship is like any other father-daughter duo. Their concern comes across as arguments, and their love manifests in the form of meals and doing stuff for each other without telling the other about it.

Netflix has been dropping some gems recently, from shows like Adolescence taking over the internet to K-dramas like When Life Gives You Tangerines, but for the most part, it’s really serious stuff that’ll get you existential or downright depressed, yet this week we get the return of one of its best rom-com series, and it might even be as good as the first season. Survival Of The Thickest is a TV show about a black plus-size stylist named Mavis. Her big dream is to make inclusive fashion more accessible to sisters like herself and to minorities who often don’t get the love they deserve. Mavis is also 38 years old and just out of an engagement that she got into because of external pressure in the first place.
