“Audiences trust the man in the street more than they trust institutions.”

That was the societal read delivered today at Mip London by Clare Sillery, who runs documentary commissioning for the BBC, greenlighting hundreds of hours of factual shows per year.

Sillery made the declaration as she spoke about how the BBC no longer wants “biographies,” “summaries” or “explainers” when it comes to the documentaries it commissions.

“In a digital-first world they are not so valuable because who is the voice telling you the story?,” said Sillery at the inaugural Mip London. “Audiences trust the man in the street more than they trust institutions and so those kinds of testimony-led films made by filmmakers are extremely valuable in this climate.”

Sillery’s exemplar was Once Upon a Time In Northern Ireland, the double-bafta-winning James Bluemel-made doc about The Troubles which featured testimony from dozens of Irish people who lived through those decades.

Studio Lambert has crowned a regal run of form by taking home the prize for production company of the year at the Edinburgh TV Festival awards.

The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge producer was recognized in front of the UK industry’s top decision-makers on Thursday evening. The Traitors also took home best entertainment series.

ITV’s Mr Bates vs The Post Office won best drama series, with the show’s star Monica Dolan winning best TV actor. The BBC’s Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland took home the documentary series prize.

Banijay UK, the company behind shows including Peaky Blinders and MasterChef, was named best production group.

The BAFTA TV Awards took place this sunny Sunday afternoon as the British equivalent of the Emmys awarded the best of the year’s TV on the other side of the Atlantic. The ceremony was hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, who both hosted last year, while the event takes place at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank. ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Chase Masterson Wraps Principal Photography On Feature

Exclusive: Chase Masterson-starrer You’re Not There, an upcoming film from Isle of Shoals Productions and Dreamality Entertainment, has wrapped principal photography in upstate New York. The drama stars Nellie Spackman and Nick Mauldin, and features Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) in a supporting role. It follows protagonist Maggie Donovan, who after a decade of surviving an unspeakable trauma, struggles to reconcile newly-sparked romantic feelings with sinister memories. You’re Not There is written and produced by Justy Kosek. Sj Creazzo (Dark Night of the Soul) is director and co-producer. Bear D’Angelo, Jenny Strassburg, Bryce Michael Wood, Gabrielle Kalomiris, and Christian Ryan round out the cast. Dreamality Entertainment is handling post production.

‘Once Upon a Time In Northern Ireland’ Pushes Into Popular Factual

Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland producer Keo Films has signed a Head of Popular Factual.

“Black Mirror,” “Silo” and “The Last of Us” were among winners at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday night in London.

“Black Mirror” Season 6 was among a handful of shows to take home two awards, with creator Charlie Brooker and writer Bisha K Ali winning in the drama writer category while the show also won best photography and lighting in fiction category for the episode “Demon 79.”

The awards were a win for Apple TV+ with “Silo” and “Slow Horses” also each taking home two awards, the former for original music in fiction and production design and the latter for sound in fiction and editing in fiction.

Meanwhile “The Last of Us” director Peter Hoar took home an award for best fiction director.

Period drama “The Great” also picked up a gong thanks to costume designer Sharon Long.

The awards were hosted by Stacey Dooley and guest presenters included Katie Piper and Tanya Moodie.

The BAFTA TV Craft Awards were handed out at the Brewery in East London on Sunday, April 28. The Craft Awards, like the Creative Arts Emmy, are dedicated to below-the-line categories with a dozen devoted to fictional programming, another six to factual, and four are in a combined field to make 22 categories overall. Happy Valley has won a trio of Broadcasting Press Guild Awards (Bpg) a day after being nominated for six BAFTAs.

The final season of Sally Wainwright’s BBC/AMC+ epic scooped the Best Drama, Best Writer and Best Actress awards. The Sarah Lancashire-starrer ended with a bang as Lancashire’s Catherine Cawood faced off with James Norton’s Tommy Lee Royce, and the show will not be returning.

Elsewhere at the BPGs, which turns 50 this year with a ceremony in London, ITV hit Mr Bates vs the Post Office was given a jury prize and The Crown exec Andy Harries won the coveted Harvey Lee Award for outstanding contribution to broadcasting, a few months after Netflix’s royal saga ended.

This year’s nominees for the Royal Television Society Programme Awards have been revealed, with Gary Oldman, Hannah Waddingham and Bella Ramsey making the cut.

Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes won the best cinema documentary prize at The Grierson Trust’s 2023 British Documentary Awards last night (November 9) in London.

The film about two brothers who rescue and care for thousands of New Delhi’s black kite birds premiered at Sundance last year. All That Breathes, which is produced by Rise Films, Kiterabbit Films and Tangled Bank Studios, also won the best single documentary – international at the Griersons, the prestigious UK documentary awards.

James Bluemel talks about his acclaimed new BBC series Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland

Journalists who covered Northern Ireland during the Troubles used to tell a story, possibly apocryphal, about gaggles of children that would trail after camera crews filming on the Falls Road. “Hey, mister,” they would shout out, “do you fancy a soundbite?”

The anecdote was a wry admission that the conflict had reached media saturation and that local people had become all too media savvy. Some riots had a staged, theatrical quality. Coverage of the Troubles became a blur of burning cars, shootings and funerals. For outsiders, it was all rather incomprehensible.
