Heading into its opening weekend, the Wonder Woman box office tracking was inconsistent, at best. Most box office analysts had predicted an opening weekend debut between $65 million and $80 million, although some predicting a debut as high as $105 million. As it turns out, the latter estimate was more accurate, with Wonder Woman easily taking the top spot with $100.5 million. This tally breaks a box office record held by Sam Taylor-Johnson's Fifty Shades of Grey, as the highest opening weekend for a movie directed by a female director ($85.1 million).

There has been a huge wave of buzz building after the Wonder Woman early reactions started rolling in after the first press screening last month, with the movie scoring an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Box Office Mojo reports that Wonder Woman opened in 4,165 theaters, pulling in an impressive $24,131 per-screen average. The superhero adventure has also taken in an additional $122.5 million internationally...

Chicago – The oldest underground film festival in U.S. cinema history is Cuff – the Chicago Underground Film Festival, celebrating its 24th edition. From Wednesday, May 31st to Sunday, June 4th, 2017, the radical fringe of the film world will unspool at the five day fest. The Opening Night film on May 31st, at the historic Logan Theatre in Chicago, is “Drifting Towards the Crescent,” a documentary from local filmmaker Laura Stewart.

Many times, movies that open in the first weekend of June, following the Memorial Day weekend, take a big hit, since the winner of the Holiday usually repeats in its second weekend. That definitely won't be the case heading into this weekend, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Baywatch both underperforming. Audiences' lack of interest in this sequel and TV show adaptation resulted in the worst Memorial Day box office weekend since 1999. That puts even more pressure on Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman to not only revitalize their Dceu franchise, but also kick start the summer box office as a whole. We're predicting that it should have no trouble beating both Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and fellow newcomer Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie to take the top spot with a projected $94.6 million.

There were so many of them working those premieres that we even had to leave some A listers off altogether (like Charlize Theron who showed up briefly in a sheer black gown but it wasn't quite a wow if she was just going to do drive by fly by fashion. Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, most box office analysts predicted that Disney's family-friendly adventure Pirates of the Carbbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales would have no trouble taking down the R-rated comedy Baywatch at the box office. The only question was how much would these Pirates beat the lifeguards by, and today we have our answer. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales easily took the top spot with $62.6 million over the three-day weekend and $77 million over the four-day holiday weekend. While it was certainly an easy win, it also proves that this franchise has lost some of its luster.

Box Office Mojo reports that this pirate adventure opened in 4,276 theaters, pulling in a solid $18,018 per-screen average. Marvel's two-week summer reign came to an end this past weekend, when Alien: Covenant ($36.1 million) unseated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($34.6 million) in a close race at the box office. The R-rated sci-fi thriller's time at the top of the box office charts will be quite short-lived, though, with this Memorial Day weekend featuring two highly-anticipated movies squaring off against each other, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Paramount's Baywatch, although Baywatch will get a bit of a head start, opening on Thursday, May 25 instead of Friday, May 26. Still, this won't change the fact that Pirates 5 should have no trouble walking away with the box office crown, with a three-day tally of $81.2 million and a four-day total of $96.4 million.

Box Office Mojo reports that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be released in more than 4,000 theaters, which is no surprise...

– The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the full slate of films for AFI Docs 2017, a five-day documentary celebration in the nation’s capital. Each year, the festival is committed to providing artists with the opportunity to present powerfully told, artfully constructed stories — and to connect audiences and filmmakers with policy leaders. AFI Docs 2017 runs June 14 – 18 in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, MD.

“The 2017 slate of films reflects AFI Docs’ mission to celebrate powerfully told stories and the people at the heart of them,” said Michael Lumpkin, Director, AFI Docs. “Documentaries continue to play an important role in our country regardless of partisan lines. The way filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin explains it, his Cannes opening night offering “Ismael’s Ghosts” doesn’t have two different cuts, it simply has two different tones.

At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon — held, as per tradition, after the press screening of the film, which will officially open the festival later tonight — Desplechin attempted to explain away rumors that the film bowing at the festival is not his preferred version, Variety reports.

“This is an idea that dates from a long time ago,” Desplechin told the crowd. “It was a proposal by the producer. We were looking at the situation…There aren’t actually two films. Sundance hit will have its UK premiere at festival.

Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country has been announced as the opener for the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff).

The film, which won the directing award at Sundance as well as two prizes at the Berlin International Film Festival, will open the 71st edition of the festival on June 21.

Starring Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu, the feature follows the relationship between a lonely sheep farmer and a Romanian immigrant worker.

“It’s a great privilege that God’s Own Country has been selected as the Opening Night film of the Edinburgh International Film Festival,” Lee said.

“After the incredible critical and audience responses to the film in both Sundance and Berlin earlier in the year, I’m thrilled to bring God’s Own Country to the UK for the first time.”

Chicago – The 16th Tribeca Film Festival wrapped last Sunday (April 30, 2017) and the award-winning films of the festival have been named. Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com was there for the first week of Tribeca and files his personal best of the films he experienced.

This is Patrick switching to first person, and I was able to see 13 media and film works, and took a turn in the “Immersive” or Virtual Reality arcade (there will a separate article on that experience). I sampled TV, short films, documentaries and narrative films, and rank them from first preferred on down, but honestly I didn’t see anything that I didn’t like, which is a testament to the programmers of this iconic film festival.

Chicago – The 13th annual CineYouth Festival – presented by Cinema/Chicago – starts on Thursday, May 4th, 2017, at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, kicking off a three day festival run. The opening night film is the animated “My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea,” a debut by director Dash Shaw, who will make an appearance on behalf of the film for the CineYouth Festival.

Whenever the slide began, his tendencies to overstuff his narratives with zany layers of (often inconsequential) tangential sub-plotting began years ago, look no further than his 1986 sequel to his most famous film, A Man and a Woman: 20 Years Later for longstanding evidence of the change. His later period reflects the stamp of various muses, such as actress Audrey Dana, and now, frequent co-author Valerie Perrin. With 2013’s We Love You, You Bastard and 2015’s Un + Une, Lelouch has become completely divorced from his illustrious past filmography, a chasm only widened by his latest venture, Everybody’s Life, once more featuring Johnny Hallyday and Jean Dujardin amongst a cavalcade of a cast, all whirling through this odd kitchen sink array of miscellaneous characters all inclined to converse about their Zodiac signs as they fall in and out of romantic love or obsessive yearning during a a year’s time in Beaune, France.

As an annual jazz festival gets underway, a slew of characters intersect and coverage in the provincial town of Beaune in the Burgundy region. A judge (Eric Dupond-Moretti) must contend with the news of Clementine’s (Beatrice Dalle) retirement, a local prostitute whose company has brought him great joy since the death of his wife. Meanwhile, his colleague Nathalie (Julie Ferrier) falls out of a window after finding her husband (Gerard Darmon) with another man, sharing an ambulance with a hypochondriac singer (Mathilde Seigner) who believes she is having a heart attack following a performance at the festival. At the same time, a tawdry court case has drawn together another subsection of the community, including the troubled alcoholic Antoine (Christophe Lambert), currently facing the dissolution of his own marriage with his disconsolate wife (Marianne Denicourt) betwixt legal troubles. And as famed singer Johnny Hallyday faces a problem with a slippery doppelganger (who has a tryst with an unhappily married Comtesse played by Elsa Zylberstein, married to Vincent Perez), which causes some confusion with local cop Jean (Jean Dujardin), the marriage between former beauty queen (Nadia Fares) and Stephane (Stephane De Groodt) is also on the rocks. Meanwhile, the local hospital has decided to engage a new policy wherein patients must be put at ease through sexually provocative jokes, which brings a chummy nurse (Deborah Francois) into contact with several patients.

If Max Ophuls had wanted to make La Ronde (1950) into a relationship farce (to be fair, Roger Vadim kind of did this with his remake) set to light jazz, it might look something like Everybody’s Life. However, Lelouch feels as if he filmed his illustrious cast in a number of amusing scenarios and pasted the end results together as he saw fit, clipping it into a semblance of repeated scenarios with revolving characters, all who end up professing their love, being destroyed by it, or simply moving on to another chapter. However, the film is neither subtle nor diverse in its repetitive techniques, and for as entertaining as it is to see Hallyday and Dujardin horse around as they take selfies, the frivolousness quickly gets wearying, particularly by its grand framed finale, where we return to the court room a year later after the film’s beginning, with Lelouch stuffing all his characters, whether it makes sense or not, into the same room.

Gregoire Lacroix assists Perrin, Pierre Uytterhoeven (who co-wrote A Man and a Woman) and Lelouch in this adaptation from his own prose, but Everybody’s Life drifts aimlessly, as if besotted by the presence of its own unlucky in love characters all experiencing the same approximation of discontent. Most of these formulas are tedious, if not forgettable, with a glaring bright spot from Beatrice Dalle as a prostitute who wants nothing more to do with sex or men and relish the retirement she deserves. If somewhat less ungainly than rom-com Un+Une and the loopy We Love You, You Bastard, this isn’t a return to form or an ascension to new heights for Lelouch, try as it might to ‘experiment’ with traditional narrative form.

The year marks the ninth run of the Panorama Europe Film Festival, co-presented by The Museum of the Moving Image and Eunic (European Union National Institutes for Culture). Panorama Europe’s platform emphasizes new and vital European Cinema.

This year, Europe celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, which established a common market allowing people, goods, services, and capital to move freely. Panorama Europe Film Festival is part of this important celebration, the EU60 campaign. Films screened at the festival hail from the countries of Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, and Spain.

The festival will run May 5 – 21 at the Museum of Moving Images and the Bohemian National Hall. The opening and closing nights of the festival promise to have two special screenings.

Performances have begun for Center Theatre Group's production of Archduke. Written by Rajiv Joseph, the world premiere of Archduke began previews April 25 and will continue through June 4, 2017, at the Mark Taper Forum. Opening night is set for May 7. The 56th edition of the Cannes Critics’ Week sidebar has announced its main program, including seven films screening in competition.
