What can be said of George Romero 's film The Crazies? It was sandwiched between The Night Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead and being half as good as either. This is a nightmare vision of a pandemic virus that causes people to act irrational and violent. Martial law is declared and most of the film is guys in hazmat suits gunning people down. This is a drop in quality to Night Of The Living Dead for sure. The pace is slow and the film tends to have a lot of boring filler. However, rest assured that The Crazies is still a George Romero film and not the best of his work. For B movie horror, The Crazies is still a decent watch although is not a movie of his that I revisit often.
Maniac is one of my favorite horror movies, but with no Joe Spinneli another Maniac movie is impossible. So, director William Lustig brings us Maniac Cop. There is a serial killer cop that is killing people on the mean streets of NYC. Maniac Cop brings the suspense, tension and dark ambiance of horror with the quick pace, car chases and shootouts familiar to action fans. William Lustig blends genres well and has a strong cast with Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, William Smith, Richard Roundtree and Captain Dynoball from Tango And Cash as the Maniac Cop. Maniac Cop is a cult classic and spawned two sequels. I enjoyed this and I think Maniac Cop is good for what it is.
