The stage is a Spartan cargo plane. The plot is a short flight (just about matching the movie run time of 90 minutes) above Alaska. On board are a badass US Marshall, the prisoner she is delivering, and the pilot that turns out to be a killer hired to extract the prisoner who is going to testify against his gangster boss. Director Mel Gibson tries to milk as much as he can out of the scenario, failing according to miserably critics.
In the action department, it is just about what you would expect from such a setting. Comedy comes mainly from the prisoner, a bit of a clown. Ironically, pathos (maybe too lofty a word) also comes from him, or his love for his mother, to be exact. Complementing the action in the plane is voice communication with ground, by the US Marshall who has the pilot/killer under restrain but is herself not a pilot. She gets help from a real pilot, while also having rapport with her colleagues, one of whom turning out to be a mole. The climactic crash landing scene looks suspiciously familiar with Airport.
While some critic have completely written this movie off, to an ordinary audience like myself, the 90 minutes of entertainment is acceptable.
Before I forget, the villain is Mark Wahlberg who can play this role in his sleep. Quite an eye-opener is Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary in Downton Abbey) as the badass US Marshall. Topher Grace delivers his part for comic relief.
