Plot
Two highly-trained operatives become close after being sent to protect opposite sides of a mysterious gorge. When an evil emerges, they must work together to survive what lies within.
Cast
Miles Teller in one of the few roles he hasn't played an awful human being and Anna Taylor Joy who is charming as always and the legend that is Sigourney Weaver though barely.
Verdict
I'm not one for trailers, they tend to reveal too much but for whatever reason I watched this one having absolutely no idea what it was. Immediately my interest peaked, this looked really quite interesting. I pushed it up my watchlist, ventured in and found a very original, very interesting and positively horrifying movie that though flawed was fascinating enough to keep my attention consistently throughout.
Our leads are fine, the movie has the budget to pull everything off, it's competently written, the premise is incredible, so why flawed? Well for a start I feel like it should have been longer, furthermore the ending felt badly rushed and really damaged the movie.
If you can get past that however this is an ingenious horror/romance/sci-fi that ticks most of the essential boxes, a few bonus ones and throws you some very original stuff you'll likely not have seen before.
It should have been better, but it's still a thoroughly enjoyable bit of take your brain out entertainment.
Rants
This is one of those films that would have been considerably better suited as a television show rather than a movie. Can you imagine this fantastic premise and gradual build up of lore as a show? Spread it out longer, build the tension, complete every facet of the universe that the movie alas leaves ambiguous? Alas it would probably go the same way as From, you know great idea but the writers just didn't have an end game but think of the potential!
The Good
The cast are competent here Incredible concept Some brilliant haunting visuals
The Bad
Feels a tad incomplete Too short Rushed finale.
