Sor Ye-yé (1968)
6/10
A sympathetic and agreeable Spanish/Mexican co-production professionally directed by Ramón Fernandez
21 December 2021
Maria (Helda Aguirre) is a young orphan who lives with her dominant aunt (Margot Cottens) . In the evening , she sings in a spectacle bar and forms a rock band with friends called Los Yakis Voladores . But while Ernesto (Enrique Guzmán) is in love with Maria , she cannot correspond these feelings for him . Then she decides to become nun and at the convent is nicknamed the Hermana Maria Sor Ye-Ye . There Maria meets a philantropic doctor (Manuel Gil) who runs the hospital and heals sick people without salary . They are two very different roles . On one hand , he is a serious and upright doctor , on the other hand , she is a beautiful and extroverted nun who's being usually adviced by a likeable , friendly old nun , Madre María de los Ángeles (Sara Garcia) . Little by little , both of whom fall in love but there's an extreme inconvenience , she is a novice nun , furthermore , there's another suitor , her old flame Ernesto Nieva (Enrique Guzmán) .

Enjoyable musical comedy with amenity , fine humor , subtle irony , traditional sense of style and nice Mexican setting . It was common in post-war cinema to deal with the most luxurious means of advertising in favor of singers , bullfighters , athletes , priests and and using , as usual , the Catholicism and holy church through some friendly nuns . The amusing and funny storyline written by Vicente Escrivá and José María Sánchez Silva , being loosely based on the Antonio Palacio Valdes novel : ¨La Hermana de San Sulpicio¨; however the adaptation is not faithful to the details . This one results to be an attempt to popularize Helda Aguirre as Maria Sor Ye-yé , a lively , fun girl who makes a surprising decision : to become a singer nun . Nevertheless , Hilda Aguirre did not sing her songs but was dubbed . She's well accompanied by the gallant Manuel Gil as good looking partenaire , as well as the famous Mexican idol Enrique Guzmán playing a singer who eventually participates in San Remo Festival singing along with Hilda Aguirre/Sor Ye Ye in order to obtain money to heal a blind boy.
