Black Bag (Steven Soderbergh)
If a James Bond or Mission: Impossible film excised all its action scenes––save a stray explosion or gunshot––while employing a script with a pop John le Carré sensibility, it might resemble something like Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. A hyper-slick, suave spy thriller, it’s mainly relegated to dinner tables and office rooms as stages for rapid-fire, gleefully barbed verbal sparring scripted by David Koepp, returning to the genre after Ethan Hunt’s first outing. George R.R. Martin has been writing consistently for decades, but is by far best known for his A Song of Ice and Fire books, adapted for TV as Game of Thrones. He's doing press right now to promote the movie In The Lost Lands, which is based off one of his short stories. While he's happy to talk about Game of Thrones and all of its offshoots, reading these interviews, you also get the idea that he wishes more people were interested in his non-Game of Thrones projects.
In that way, Martin relates to Frank Herbert, the author of the Dune series, which has been consistently popular ever since the first book came out in 1965. "Frank made Dune, which was one of the great, great books in the history of science fiction," Martin told Collider. "But I know him a little, not a lot, just over conventions, and I...

Few director/actor duos have been operating for as long as Paul W.S. Anderson and his favourite muse (and wife), Milla Jovovich. Over the last two decades, we’ve seen Jovovich fight all manner of fiends and creatures under Anderson’s direction in movies like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. In The Lost Lands, featuring the actor as all-powerful witch Alys, sticks to that formula, offering up an ample amount of both beastly and human foes to slay. But the eyesore visuals and lacklustre plot turn what should be breezy fun into a frustrating bore.
Anderson has been known to mix the digital with the practical in the past, but In The Lost Lands sees him at his most artificial. The post-apocalyptic dystopia he and regular cinematographer Glen MacPherson conjure seems to be aiming for Zack Snyder-esque desaturation but winds up closer to poorly rendered video-game territory, with lighting that feels anything but real.

George R.R. Martin is the author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, which HBO adapted as Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones was a monster hit that has produced two spinoff series: House of the Dragon is gearing up for its third season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres this year, and there are more shows in development. That makes Martin one of the more influential writers working today; even short stories of his that have nothing to do with Westeros, like In The Lost Lands, are getting turned into movies.
And if Martin has his way, there will be more. While promoting In The Lost Lands, Collider asked him what scenes he's written he's most looking forward to seeing onscreen. Of course he named some scenes from the books he's written about Westeros, but he also brought up his 1982 novel Fevre Dream, which is set...

George R.R. Martin is one of the most iconic modern novelists. He is best known for penning the A Song Of Ice And Fire series, which has been adapted for the screen as HBO's Game of Thrones as well as the prequel spinoff House of the Dragon. Though its later seasons were poorly received, Game of Thrones remains one of the most beloved 21st century dramas, winning a total of 59 Emmy Awards over its eight-season run. Another spinoffcalled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is in the works and set for release sometime this year.
Not all of Martin adaptations are created equally, however. This year's In the Lost Lands adapts one of Martin's short stories, and is performing abysmally so far. In the Lost Lands received terrible reviews, getting a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant's Alex Harrison gave the movie 2 out of 10 stars, cautioning "don't waste your time" to summarize his review.

George R.R. Martin, famous for his A Song of Ice and Fire series, recently shared his thoughts on adaptations and the challenges authors face when their works are brought to the screen. Ahead of the world premiere of In the Lost Lands, Martin spoke about Frank Herbert’s iconic Dune series and the difficulties Herbert might have had with the overwhelming focus on Dune in his career.
While Martin has been open about his critical views on some adaptations, he acknowledged that Herbert, unlike him, was more supportive of the 1984 Dune film directed by David Lynch.
Although the movie wasn’t universally well-received, it holds a special place in the history of Dune adaptations. However, Martin emphasized that the more recent 2021 Dune film by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, has overshadowed Lynch’s version, especially with its success and critical acclaim.

Adaptations are a tricky thing. Balancing loyalty to the source material and artistic freedom is never easy, and when you have hoards of fans waiting to dissect everything on screen and compare it to the image they had in their mind, it's hard for an adaptation to live up to expectations. We spoke with George R.R. Martin for an exclusive conversation before the world premiere of In the Lost Lands and asked him about his adaptations and what he wanted to see on screen. During the discussion, Martin also reflected on the Dune adaptations and discussed Frank Herbert's potential reaction to the recent films by Denis Villeneuve.

The video game adaptation genre is one Milla Jovovich is plenty familiar with, and one of her movies is now climbing the streaming charts. After some smaller roles in the late '80s, Jovovich first rose to stardom with her turn as Leeloo in Luc Besson's The Fifth Element. The years since have seen her star in everything from Spike Lee's He Got Gameto Ben Stiller's Zoolander and its sequel, as well as David Harbour's Hellboy reboot.
Her most notable project to date, however, remains that of the Resident Evil movie franchise, an adaptation of Capcom's survival horror video game series of the same name. Partnered with her husband, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson, Jovovich carried the role of heroine Alice through six movies, while also having starred in Anderson's adaptations of The Three Musketeers and George R.R. Martin's In the Lost Lands. In the Lost Lands.Paul W. S. Anderson is beaming a boyish grin when I log into our video call. Salt-and-pepper hair aside, you wouldn’t guess that the B-movie maven was turning sixty on the day of our chat. “I’m actually getting to spend my first birthday in three years with Milla,” he says by way of preamble while I fumble with my recording device. Anderson is cinema’s preeminent wife guy, and the Milla in question is Milla Jovovich, mother to his three daughters and star of seven collaborations.Theirs is one of the great actor-director partnerships of the 21st century—she the high-kicking badass with charisma to burn, he the no-nonsense conductor of bodies in (slow) motion; the enthusiastic facilitator of his leading lady’s uncomplicated cool. The surly critical dismissal of their new film, In the Lost Lands (2025), tells a familiar story. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and adapted from a story by Game of Thrones’ George R. R. Martin, dystopian sci-fi thriller In the Lost Lands aims for a fun mixture of spaghetti western, swords and sorcery movies and Mad Max-style post-apocalypse thrills, with a dash of werewolf action thrown in. Unfortunately, it falls painfully short across the board.

Milla Jovovich recalls how "demoralizing" it was to be a child actor in Hollywood and how this defined her Dazed and Confused role. Jovovich's acting career dates back to the late '80s and early '90s, with roles in projects like Paradise, Married...with Children, Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991), and Chaplin (1992). Released in 1993, Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused features a cast stacked with an impressive array of actors, many of whom would go on to become major stars. Jovovich appears in the film as Michelle Burroughs, who plays a guitar at a fire in one memorable sequence.
During a recent interview with GQ in which she looks back at the most iconic roles from her career, Jovovich reveals that her role as Michelle in Dazed and Confused was informed by her "soul-sucking" experience as a child actor. She doesn't get into any specifics in terms of what projects...

To celebrate the release of In The Lost Lands, which comes to UK cinemas this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with one of the stars of the film, and its director, to find out more.
In The Lost Lands centers on a queen who, desperate to fulfill her love, sends the powerful and feared sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich) to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands in search of a magical power, where the sorceress and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Bautista), must outwit and outfight man and demon.
Chatting to Jovovich and Anderson, we talk the lure of martin’s short story and why it made for perfect cinematic fodder, the long process of development and on-off production delays, utilising realistic CGI that allowed the actors to watch themselves “inside” the world on screen, the fight sequences, training, working with Dave Bautista – who both say is...

Dave Bautista said his In the Lost Lands character is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Eastwood starred in a handful of genre films before the Dollars Trilogy, where he played his career's most iconic role.
In the Lost Lands cast Dave Bautista in a uniquely familiar role. He plays Boyce, a hunter who joins a witch in her search for a magical gift that would transform their queen to a werewolf. That premise screams adventure fantasy, but Bautista’s character has all the earmarks of a Spaghetti Western cowboy. The actor confirmed this with DiscussingFilm, describing the movie as a “Western stuck in a fantasy world”. He knew he was onboard after reading the opening narration. “I’d been looking to play a cowboy, and all day long I was just thinking ‘Clint Eastwood, what would Clint Eastwood do?’” he explained.

“In the Lost Lands” director Paul W.S. Anderson is used to his movies getting released, being under-appreciated and then finding their audience years — or sometimes decades — later.
“I’m British, we are used to considering ourselves being rubbish,” Anderson said. But he is aware that even movies considered flops do sometimes come back in a big way. “You release the movie and no one likes it and then 10 years later they go, ‘That was a great movie.’ Could you not have told me that 10 years ago?” he added.
Anderson started his career in England. He made the low-budget thriller “Shopping” in 1994 which starred a then-unknown Jude Law. The British press was ruthless. Anderson still remembers that one outlet branded the film “a reckless orgy of destruction.” “That was supposed to be a criticism and I loved it so much that we stuck it on the poster,” Anderson said. It was a source of pride.

George R.R. Martin has experience with adaptations. The author watched as HBO adapted his Song of Ice and Fire books for TV as Game of Thrones, contributing a few scripts along the way. HBO is currently in the midst of adapting his book Fire & Blood for the small screen as House of the Dragon. There have been some bumps in that road; after the second season aired, Martin aired out some of his issues with how the show was adapting his book, and the resulting fracas was big enough for HBO to release a statement to calm things down.
And now, Martin is out promoting In The Lost Lands, a new movie based on his short story of the same name. Speaking to Collider alongside the Milla Jovovich and Paul W. S. Anderson, who starred in and directed the movie, Martin admitted that he's gotten "in trouble" for talking about adaptations in the past.

Paul W.S. Anderson might not feel like the most obvious choice to adapt a George R.R. Martin story, but he says he has taken direct inspiration from the author’s source story in achieving the vision for In the Lost Lands. And yes, it involves a lot of blue screen.
Anderson recently chatted with Variety to discuss how he sought to achieve a vision that doesn’t only respect Martin but creates an environment that doesn’t rely on the author’s most famous work, the Game of Thrones series. “It entirely came out of George’s story, really. Reading it, the Lost Lands were sentient. It was like walking into the Overlook Hotel and going, ‘Oh, my God, it’s alive.’ It was a whole haunted landscape. The Fifth Element is widely regarded as one of the best sci-fi action films ever made, due in no small part to the amazing performances from stars Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich. Their on-screen chemistry was off the charts, and though Willis was already an established actor by 1997, the film helped make Jovovich a global superstar early on in her career. Now, the In the Lost Lands actress has revealed which specific scene it was in Luc Besson's movie that completely changed her life.
Speaking with GQ about her more than three-decade career, Jovovich fondly looked back on The Fifth Element to recall that it was the scene where her character of Leeloo is encased in glass and being hounded by government officials that sent her career on a trajectory she never could have imagined. The reason, she said, is because it really taught her about what it meant to truly be an actress.

Milla Jovovich explains why one Leeloo scene in The Fifth Element had a profound impact on her as a performer. It was a rough weekend at the box office. A slew of smaller releases tried to drum up some business as Warner Bros. finally unveiled director Bong Joon Ho's "Mickey 17," which disappointed greatly with a $19 million debut. That was still good enough to top the charts, which says a lot about just how poorly the weekend went. To further illustrate just how bad it was, another flop sort of flew under the radar in the form of "In the Lost Lands." One would be forgiven for not knowing this movie even exists but, nonetheless, its investors are undoubtedly unhappy.
Based on "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin's short story of the same name, "In the Lost Lands" opened to just over $1 million on 1,370 screens. That made for a truly lousy $761 per-screen average. This one is Doa, despite having an awful lot of talent involved. To make matters worse,...

Put bluntly, it was a very disappointing weekend at the box office. 2025 has not gotten off to the greatest start, with even Marvel's "Captain America: Brave New World" only doing okay in theaters, as opposed to the massive windfalls we'd come to expect from these movies in years past. Save for the unexpected $2 billion Chinese blockbuster "Ne Zha 2," it's been tough sledding. In keeping with that sentiment, director Bong Joon Ho's long-awaited sci-fi flick "Mickey 17" hit theaters this past weekend with disappointing results.
The good news for Warner Bros. is that "Mickey 17," which stars Robert Pattinson ("The Batman"), topped the charts domestically with $19 million. It led a weekend with very little new competition, save for Paul W.S. Anderson's fantasy epic "In the Lost Lands," which barely managed $1 million in its debut. Overall, the domestic box office for the weekend totaled just over $53 million. That's bad,...

In an interview with George R.R. Martin before the world premiere of In the Lost Lands, Martin reiterated his excitement for the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series, a prequel to Game of Thrones. The author revealed back in January on his blog post "Dunk, Egg, a Few Random Mutterings" that he'd seen the entire season, and informed Collider during the interview that not only was he still impressed by the season, but that the soon-to-be released series is already working on a Season 2.

Another Games of Thrones spinoff is almost here. Franchise creator George R.R. Martin has opened up about the forthcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which he claims will be unlike any previous Game of Thrones series.
Speaking with Collider to promote In the Lost Lands, the recently released fantasy movie based on his short story of the same name, Martin teased A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on his Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. "I've seen Dunk and Egg, the first season, and it's great," Martin praised, "and now they're working on the second season. We had learned this past Halloween season that Paul W.S Anderson (Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil film franchise, Monster Hunter, In the Lost Lands) is returning to the horror genre with an upcoming movie adaptation of the video game The House of the Dead, which will be coming along over 20 years after Uwe Boll’s infamous adaptation.
Paul W.S Anderson will write and direct the new adaptation of Sega’s zombie game, which debuted back in 1996 and spawned a franchise as well as a remake in 2022. In a new chat with Variety this week, Anderson details his “very, very scary” vision for the upcoming movie.
“It’s going to be immersive and very, very scary,” Paul W.S. Anderson promises. “It’ll all play out in real time, so it reflects the experience of playing the video game. The only time it stops is when you beat the game or you die.

If there's anyone who knows how to bring a video game to life on the big screen, it's director Paul W.S. Anderson. Not only has he helmed six Resident Evil movies over the course of his career, but he also directed 1995's Mortal Kombat, and 2020's Monster Hunter, which was based on the popular series of games by Capcom. Now he's at it again with a new adaptation of House of the Dead, which he says is going to be something very "different" for him.
Speaking with Variety to promote his latest release, In the Lost Lands, Anderson touched a little on House of the Dead, which is the third adaptation of the action horror game franchise following Uwe Boll's 2003 version, and the direct-to-dvd sequel helmed by Michael Hurst in 2006. Milla Jovovich tells us about her new action adventure, In The Lost Lands, adapting George Rr Martin, and giving the middle finger to critics.
Against a parched landscape, two figures emerge from the shimmering haze. One is a grizzled bounty hunter; the other a mysterious woman with a dark past. Neither quite trusts the other, but they’re united by a potentially deadly mission in hostile territory. Oh, and the bounty hunter has a pet snake with two heads. And the mysterious woman’s a witch.
This is In The Lost Lands, the latest movie from director and co-writer Paul Ws Anderson and Milla Jovovich – actor, action star, and Anderson’s long-time wife. Like their earlier movies together – most notably the run of Resident Evil films they made between 2002 and 2016 – it’s a true collision of genres. Spaghetti western meets post-apocalyptic horror; dark fantasy rubs up against two-fisted, pistol-firing Hong Kong action.

The next Resident Evil film is coming in September 2026 it’s now been confirmed, with Zach Cregger directing. More here.
Ever since Barbarian released in 2022 and announced director Zach Cregger as a bold new name in the horror genre, we’ve been waiting patiently for his next film.
That next film is still set to be Weapons, a horror ‘opus’. But it now sounds as though we might well be getting two films from Cregger in the same year, with news emerging that his spin on the survival horror videogame series Resident Evil will release in September of 2026.
It was last September that we first covered reports that Cregger had signed up to tackle Resident Evil, with Sony backing the project after the filmmaker declined to continue developing a remake of Clue with the studio. That agreement is now official, with Sony even publicly dating the film, per Deadline.

After exploring so many different genres over the course of his prolific career, filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson finally decided to tackle the fantasy genre and it seems that his approach was as action-packed as you’d expect from the guy who brought you Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and other similar movies.
Reuniting with Milla Jovovich and joined by MCU alumn Dave Bautista, Anderson managed to craft a visually intriguing movie with two strong performances and he recently talked about the whole filmmaking process in a very intriguing interview.

Mickey 17 laid claim to the No. 1 spot at the box office during its inauspicious debut, but actor Robert Pattinson’s science fiction comedy also walked away with the dubious honor of having fronted the year's least profitable three-day period yet. Should the estimates hold true, Mar. 7 through Mar. 9 will go down as the worst weekend of 2025 financially, despite Mickey 17 making $19.1 million domestically, as all the film titles over the last three days were only able to bring in a year-low $53.38 million.
The previous record holder for the worst weekend of 2025 (Feb. 28-Mar. 2) was set just seven days ago with a lackluster total of $53.552 million, which was led by the former No. 1 Captain America: Brave New World. It’s also worth noting that the heads of Warner Bros. Pictures weren’t likely jumping for joy even though their latest film, Mickey 17, made a worldwide total of $53.3 million. True, the...

If you were waiting for the dam to break at the box office, allowing a torrent of dollars to flood a sleepy post-Oscars weekend, prepare to get caught in an undertow of disappointment. After a brief delay, acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho returned to theaters this weekend with Mickey 17, a quirky sci-fi epic starring Robert Pattinson that, despite its stumble during its box office debut, dethroned Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World after three weeks at the top of the charts. While Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer, Okja, and the Best Picture-winning film Parasite are beloved cinematic treats, Mickey 17 only managed $19.1 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend.
Ho’s previous film, Parasite, earned $376,264 during its U.S. theater debut, making its $125,421 per-theater average a 2019 record-setter. At the time of its release, Ho’s unsettling social thriller managed the best per-screen haul since La La Land,...

Dave Bautista was introduced to most moviegoers as Drax, the brutal but kind-hearted warrior of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. In the decade since, he’s taken his share of tough guy roles, in the 007 entry “Spectre” and the “Dune” franchise, but the 56-year-old actor has also developed his tender side with standout dramatic turns, playing a teacher with visions of the apocalypse in “Knock at the Cabin” and an insecure incel influencer in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
Now starring in director Paul W.S. Anderson’s post-apocalyptic feudal Western “In the Lost Lands,” Bautista shines as a more old-fashioned hero: a royal-employed gun-slinger in the distrustful, lonely mold of spaghetti Western rough riders. For the actor, the role was worth relishing.

Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17,” the first of Warner Bros.’ eclectic, pricey 2025 slate of original films from name-brand directors like Ryan Coogler and Paul Thomas Anderson, isn’t getting the warmest arrival at the box office. The sci-fi comedy, starring Robert Pattinson as a pair of interstellar doppelgangers, earned $7.7 million across Friday and preview screenings from 3,807 locations.
That kick-off puts “Mickey 17” on pace to land within projections for an opening weekend north of $18 million. Whether or not it can fulfill that forecast though, it’s going to be a slow start for a film sporting a $118 million production budget. Add in marketing and distribution costs and the Warner Bros. release will likely struggle to enter profitability in theaters, which could take more than $275 million in global admissions.

Milla Jovovich not only plays Gray Alys in Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest film In The Lost Lands, but lands her first official producing credit, despite Paul's assertion that she’s always produced their projects. Together they decide what their favorite collaboration has been in their extensive body of work (which they adorably disagree on). Paul W.S. Anderson tells Grae Drake how much care went into building the look of this visually groundbreaking film that he calls “an adult fairy tale."
In The Lost Lands chronicles Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich), a powerful and feared sorceress, and her journey into the ghostly wilderness in search of a magical power. Her guide Boyce (Dave Bautista) must help her outwit and outfight both man and demon.

In The Lost Lands is out now in theaters, introducing viewers to the witch Gray Alys, a conjurer created by none other than A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin himself. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, In The Lost Lands adapts a 1982 short story written by Martin for the big screen. It stars Milla Jovovich as Alys, a witch who can give you anything you want — though you'll probably wish she hadn't when all is said and done. When she's approached by a queen who wants the power to turn into a werewolf, Alys sets off into the titular Lost Lands with the help of a guide and hunter named Boyce (Dave Bautista) to track it down.

It's that time of year again! No, not Spring — it's time for a new George R.R. Martin adaptation, which takes place in a grungy Western post-apocalyptic world. Based on a short story of the same name, In the Lost Lands follows a witch called Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich), who is cursed to fulfill whatever wishes are demanded of her by people. She is approached by a queen (Amara Okereke) who asks Gray Alys to give her the gift of shapeshifting into a werewolf. Alongside a hunter named Boyce (Dave Bautista), Alys travels into the barren place known as the "Lost Lands" to hunt down a werewolf and fulfill the queen's wish.

Even with his adoration though, it’s taken Paul W.S. Anderson more than three decades to make a fantasy feature. You would think an action-adventure fantasy movie starring two of the genres' more charismatic and accomplished stars from a short story by a beloved scribe would lead to a solid result. Sadly, In the Lost Lands is lesser than the sum of its parts. What exactly is missing though? Or didn't go right? As is often the case with movies, it's not entirely clear and we'd have to theorize, but the finished dish leaves much to be desired regardless of its enticing ingredients. First, some context.

George R.R. Martin is undoubtedly one of the best-known contemporary authors today when it comes to having his work adapted. He's far from the only one, but Game of Thrones kicked off a huge revival of interest in fantasy while becoming one of the most successful fantasy TV shows in history. Of course, when it comes to adapting books into movies or TV shows, the end results often run the gamut in terms of quality and loyalty to the source material. In a conversation hosted by Blancpain with Martin, Milla Jovovich, and Paul W.S. Turns out House of the Dragon almost started on a very different note — one that might have put Paddy Considine’s Viserys in the background right from the jump. George R.R. Martin revealed that an early version of the show had a scrapped opening scene that was deemed too “challenging,” forcing the writers to take a different route.

The U.K. and Ireland box office soared in February, generating £100.7 million ($129.9 million), a notable 20% boost compared to the £83.8 million ($108.1 million) recorded in February 2024, according to Comscore. The year-to-date figures are also encouraging, tracking 15% ahead of 2024 and 21% ahead of 2023.
