Sabrina Carpenter dropped her sixth album, “Short n’ Sweet,” on August 23, but it’s her most consequential release yet, coming on the heels of two breakthrough hit singles: “Espresso,” which has so far peaked at number-three on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Please Please Please,” her first chart-topper. The new album includes those two blockbusters, but how do the other 10 tracks compare?
Thus far, “Short n’ Sweet” has a strong MetaCritic score of 78 based on 14 reviews counted thus far: 12 are classified as positive and two are mixed, but none are negative. Jem Aswad (Variety) is especially fond of the collection, calling it “the powerful next step in her evolution as an artist, person and persona.” It “seals her arrival as a pop superstar,” according to Rob Sheffield (Rolling Stone). Charles Lyons-Burt (Slant) writes, “Carpenter and her collaborators, who include Jack Antonoff on a third of the songs, deftly integrate an evolving tapestry of sounds,...

It’s natural when in a long term relationship to question the different ways you act around your partner at various points in your life. Filmmaker Peter Collins Campbell’s short Variations on a Theme takes those questions of self-awareness to a whole new level, however, by making them literal in the form of a science fiction style concept about a couple who start to investigate the ability they have to physically split their bodies into many different versions of themselves. It’s an engrossing, philosophical and technically-impressive short film that despite its relatively small budget looks completely seamless in its visual effects work. Dn last spoke to Campbell a few years ago for his absurdist comedy Summer Vacation, and invited him back to our pages today for a chat about the journey he went on making Variations on a Theme, learning how it started from a desire to impulsively...

Famous for its surreal genre-mashing and cross-gender casting, “Summer Vacation 1999”'s (1988) cultish elements recall the beginnings of shonen-ai (boy's love), one of many queercoded creative spaces that have been veiled for heterosexual enjoyment. Before our time of identity politics and labels, representations of gender and sexual fluidity wove itself into existence by sheer will and unquenchable desire. Today, in the restored catalogs of festivals such as Queer East, we look back in celebration, but also with a mixed sense of wonder, empathy and relief. In Shusuke Kaneko's futurist romantic-mystery, three boys reel from the return of their supposed-dead schoolmate to their countryside boarding school, igniting tensions and unrequited desires. “Summer Vacation 1999” breathes life into a depiction of queer spaces as innocent, fleeting and beautiful, forever scarred into memory.

Powered by “Barbenheimer,” 2023 box office in Spain surged 31% to €487.5 ($541.1 million), still 18.2% below a pre-pandemic average of €596 million ($661.6 million) over 2015-19.
At 74.9 million tickets sold, admissions rose 26%, 24% down on pre-covid cinemagoing, according to Comscore Movies Spain, which announced 2023 results through Dec. 29 on Friday.
“2023 was the third consecutive year of box office recovery in Spain,” David Rodríguez, Comscore Movies general manager for Spain and Portugal, told Variety.
That said, Spain’s 2023 recovery looks set to continue down on France’s and Germany’s and most especially the U.K.’s, but in line with Italy’s.
“Economies in Northern Europe are stronger and Covid-19 restrictions on cinema attendance lasted longer in Spain and Italy,” said Rodríguez.
As all over the world, war in the Ukraine, Gaza and above all Hollywood’s double strike, which pushed back key releases to 2024 and 2025, created “turbulence,” frustrating a more powerful B.O. rally in Spain, he added.

"Hotel Transylvania: Transformania" lacks the magic of the previous films without Adam Sandler's voice as Dracula. "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" is an enjoyable film with a hilarious romance and incorporates more zany humor. "Hotel Transylvania 2" surpasses the original with a refined formula, themes of inclusion, and Adam Sandler's best performance as Dracula.
The Hotel Transylvania series has been a consistent favorite among younger viewers since its inception, with each animated film bringing in an impressive figure at the box office. The films put a lighter, more silly spin on the famous Universal monsters like Dracula and the Wolfman, with all the classic monsters coming together under the roof of Dracula's hotel. Though each installment in this quirky franchise has been a delight in its own way, they weren't all created equal, especially as we dive into the later installments.
