Noggin, Paramount Global’s interactive learning subscription service for preschoolers, is shutting down, sources tell Deadline. The Nick Jr.-affiliated app is slated to sunset this year, with the majority of its staff let go in the latest round of layoffs at Paramount Global on Tuesday that impacted about 800 U.S. employees.
As Noggin stops taking new subscribers, there will be a transition period for current ones. Noggin predated Paramount Global’s flagship streamer Paramount+, which has been carrying Noggin’s video content under the Nick Jr. preschool brand.
The development comes almost a year after Paramount reportedly explored a sale of a majority stake in Noggin as the company shifted priorities — and resources — to Paramount+ and Pluto TV.
Noggin was co-founded by Nickelodeon parent MTV Networks and Sesame Workshop and originally launched Feb. 2, 1999 as a cable television channel and a companion website focused on imagination, creativity, and education.

As the Nickelodeon Animation Studio celebrates its 25th anniversary, it’s clearly blossomed from being a small but formidable toon house to a world-class studio with dozens of productions in process and executive Ramsey Naito at the helm. And Naito’s plans include growing relationships with creators who can speak to Nick’s audience.
In the last five to six years, the studio has expanded to include Nick Animation West (Burbank), Nick Animation East (New York) and offices in Hollywood on the Paramount lot. When Naito was named president of Nickelodeon Animation in 2020 (she has since become president of Paramount Animation as well), there were nine shows in production at the studio. Today there are nearly 70 at a place known for its irreverent, fun and boundary-breaking animation.
Naito, who went to CalArts and comes from a family of artists and haiku poets, knew the studio had to expand when she arrived.

Netflix is diving deeper into its relationship with Dr. Seuss Enterprises. On Tuesday, the streamer revealed five new preschool series and specials – all animated – are in the works.
The new projects — three of which are series, and two specials — will be based on well-known Seuss works like “Horton Hears a Who!” “The Sneetches,” “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” and “Wacky Wednesday.”
According to the streamer, the new projects will continue Netflix’s focus on preschool concepts. These new projects will introduce concepts of foundational learning, and “explore themes of diversity and respect for others all told through fun and engaging stories that incorporate the whimsical humor, distinctive visuals and rhythmic style of Dr. Seuss,” per Netflix.
“Netflix is a trusted home for characters kids love, and generations of kids love the characters imagined by Dr. Seuss. These beloved stories have been a core part of families’ libraries...

The streaming service, which will be rebranded as Paramount+ early next year, has added features including the ability to create as many as six profiles per account and manage each profile using “Kids Mode,” which allows parents to create profiles that limit content to older children or younger children based on content ratings. The service’s existing parental Pin controls’ option for mature content, which locks access to certain content based on its content rating, also will remain available to use across profiles.
The newly added Nick content includes nearly 800 episodes of children’s programming including past season of such popular series as Paw Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Blue’s Clues, Bubble Guppies, Dora the Explorer, Shimmer and Shine and more.

Chinese video streaming platform iQIYI has renewed a content supply deal with Viacom’s Nickelodeon. The deal is a fourfold expansion of the amount of content iQIYI is buying.
iQIYI will take streaming rights for Mandarin and English versions of Nickelodeon shows including “Shimmer and Shine,” “Blaze and the Monster Machines,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Top Wing,” “Rusty Rivets” and “Rise of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
The companies previously struck a deal in 2012. They expanded that, in 2017, into an exclusive cooperation agreement.
“As iQIYI seeks to expand our selection of high-quality children’s content, it is more important than ever to partner with world-leading producers of children’s programming like Nickelodeon, a beloved children’s brand in the United States, whose content has strong appeal and relevance with the Chinese audience,” said Geng Danhao, senior VP of iQIYI.
The Chinese streaming giant last week revealed its first financial data since listing its shares on Nasdaq.

You think you're ready to know how many copies of Mrs Brown's Boys people bought on DVD last year. But you are not ready...
The annual entertainment franchise report, commissioned by the Official Charts Company, has now been released, and it seems as though 2017 was a predictably great year for brands like Star Wars, Game Of Thrones and Paw Patrol, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story helping the Disney-owned franchise streak well into the lead in terms of overall DVD and Blu-ray sales, at 1.19 million units sold. Add that release to the consistently-selling likes of previous outing The Force Awakens and you've got yourself a combined figure of 1.49 million units - certainly nothing to sniff at these days, as streaming slowly becomes the more popular option for lots of geeks.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and their new Entertainment Lab in Burbank, CA. I chatted with Chris Young, Senior Vice President for the Entertainment Lab; Chris Savino, creator of The Loud House; and Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz, creator of Shimmer and Shine.
