Centered on the vigilante serial killer, Dexter is a series that does not limit itself when it comes to bringing back memorable characters. However, not every character’s return fits seamlessly into the story, as is the case with Julie Benz’s Rita Morgan.
Benz portrayed the role of Rita Morgan, Dexter’s girlfriend and later wife and the mother of his son Harrison, who met a tragic end in Season 4. The actress has since reflected on her potential return to the series, explaining why it might not be the right choice.

Since the very first season of Dexter, Julie Benz played the role of Rita Morgan, who met Dex through his sister Debra. And though he initially appeared emotionally distant, Rita was arguably one of the first people to help him open up and genuinely care for someone.

If there’s one character who has suffered throughout Dexter, it’s clearly Debra Morgan. Portrayed by Jennifer Carpenter in the original series and New Blood, Debra Morgan is introduced as an enthusiastic police officer eager to make her presence known and advance professionally.
However, things just don’t get easy for her. From surviving a near-death experience at the hands of her serial killer fiancé to discovering that her own brother is also a murderer, the show constantly dropped one bombshell after another on her. And I’m not surprised that after years of portraying a character weighed down by tragedy, Carpenter was ready to let go.

Dexter: Original Sin has opened up countless possibilities and questions about its characters. With Season 2 now officially confirmed, something many of us anticipated, I’m more excited than ever to see how the story unfolds, especially regarding Dexter and his estranged brother, Brian Moser.
The season finale hints at Brian still lurking around Dexter, leaving us to wonder whether he will return in Season 2. I’m convinced he will; otherwise, why alter what was originally planned for his character?

While the possibility is intriguing and opens up even more questions, one mystery stands out, how did Brian manage to stay hidden in plain sight for so long, despite being so close to Dexter, before ultimately emerging as the Ice Truck Killer?

The Dexter universe just keeps on expanding, and we couldn’t be more excited. While the first sequel was mediocre but engaging enough to keep us curious, the prequel was a huge success that drew in 2.1M global viewers, making its premiere episode Showtime’s most streamed series in 10 years. Furthermore, the Dexter: Original Sin finale became the most streamed episode of the season, with over 2.68M viewers. If you’ve been holding your breath for news of a renewal, breathe: Paramount+ with Showtime has officially renewed Dexter: Original Sin for season 2, ensuring our continued voyeurism of the young antihero’s transformation into a vigilante serial killer.
Original Sin is the first prequel series in the expanding franchise following serial killer Dexter Morgan. While Michael C. Hall stars as the antihero in the original series and Patrick Gibson portrays him in the prequel, Hall serves as narrator in both.

Dexter, based on the homicidal tendencies of a psychopath who is a forensic expert by day and a murderous anti-hero by night, has been going on for 8 seasons and the world is simply loving it.
With Michael C. Hall portraying the lead role of Dexter Morgan alongside Clyde Phillips as its showrunner, things were going great until Dexter: New Blood was released. Despite the negative ratings, we’ve got trust in Michael C. Hall that he will once again shine in Dexter: Resurrection.

Dexter is one of the greatest drama series ever made. It follows serial killer Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst with Miami Metro Homicide. The interesting thing about Dexter is that he knew from a young age that he had a "Dark Passenger" and, with the help of his father, created a code to live (and kill) by. Dexter is a serial killer, but he only kills people who deserve it. When the justice system fails, Dexter lies in wait to take matters into his own hands.
After Dexter's series finale, fans wanted more, and they got it in the form of a miniseries called Dexter: New Blood. While New Blood did have a lot going for it, many fans felt that the ending was even more unsatisfying than the original series. In Taylor Sheridan’s endless and sprawling Midwestern landscape, anything and everything that happens bears a consequence. The Yellowstone creator began his career as a scriptwriter with a story that would stop Hollywood in its tracks and force studios to do a double-take before unanimously vetoing the project.

But Sheridan has a way with words that can charm even the most cautious and benign studios into taking big swings and major risks. For the most part, his ideas pay off in spades. And that is one quality that the filmmaker shares with the zany and controversial tech billionaire, Elon Musk.

It's been three years since we last saw Michael C. Hall as our beloved vigilante serial killer in Dexter: New Blood, and while he made a brief appearance at the beginning of Original Sin, Dexter: Resurrection will feature his full-time return to the character first made famous in the novels by Jeff Lindsay. This time around, Hall will be joined by a lot of fresh names, but we now know of another familiar face from the original series that will also be along for the ride: Jimmy Smits.
Per Deadline, Smits will reprise his role of Miguel Prado, despite Dexter killing him in the Season 3 episode "The Damage a Man Can Do." At first a friend to Dexter who knew of his Dark Passenger, Prado's own lust for revenge clouded his decision-making as things progressed, leading to the Assistant District Attorney finding himself wrapped in plastic on Dexter's kill table.

Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter had a short-lived marriage that lasted for around two years. The duo fell in love working on the set of Dexter together, eventually getting married in 2008 on New Year’s Eve. The couple eloped appearing publically as a married couple in January 2009, during the Golden Globes Awards.

However, despite the couple splitting from each other, it seemed that the duo remained good friends after their divorce, joking around on set and having a great time either way. Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan faced off against some pretty memorable villains during the course of the original series, but perhaps none are more fondly remembered than John Lithgow's Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. The Trinity Killer. He's so revered that not only is he getting his own prequel series in the same vein as Dexter: Original Sin, but he’s also set to return in Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel show that picks things up from where New Blood left off in 2021. However, with Trinity meeting his demise at the end of Dexter Season 4, don’t expect him to stick around too long.
Appearing on an episode of Variety's Know their Lines, Lithgow – who was recently cast as Albus Dumbledore in HBO's reboot of Harry Potter – touched on his upcoming appearance in Dexter: Resurrection, and just how his character of The Trinity Killer fits into the sequel.

You'll never guess which Modern Family star just landed a serial killer role on Dexter: Resurrection
Another Emmy-winning comedy actor has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming sequel series to Dexter: New Blood. Eric Stonestreet, who famously played Cameron Tucker on all 11 seasons of Modern Family, has been tapped to recur on the series in what is believed to be a serial killer role.
The exclusive comes from Deadline, the same outlet that previously reported both Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter's casting news. Apparently, all three characters are playing serial killers as part of their guest-starring arcs. It remains to be seen if they're going to work together in some capacity, or just be one of several villains that Dexter has to eliminate.
Deadline says Stonestreet has been cast as a character named Al. Like the actor, Al also hails from the Midwest and will reportedly appear in four episodes as part of a "high profile guest-arc."

Production on Dexter: Resurrection is in full swing in New York, and as things continue to evolve, new cast members are still coming aboard the sequel series, including How I Met Your Mother veteran Neil Patrick Harris. Harris starred in the popular CBS sitcom from 2005 to 2014, appearing in 208 episodes as Barney Stinson, a brash and opinionated womanizer known for his expensive suits and “legendary” catchphrases.
Per Variety, Harris joins the already stacked cast of Dexter: Resurrection in a guest-starring role, but other than that, little is known about his part in the series other than his character's name: Lowell. It remains to be seen if he will be a friend to Michael C. Hall's titular serial killer, or if he'll end up on his kill table at some point over the course of the 10-episode season. This article contains heavy spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin.
Dexter: Original Sin is the spin-off prequel to the show Dexter, detailing the timeline of when Dexter Morgan officially became a vigilante serial killer. The show deeply explores Dexter's inexperience and his ongoing refinement of the art of meticulous murder. Dexter encounters numerous obstacles while searching for guilty individuals to target. However, his thirst for killing remains overpowering.
Dexter: Original Sin also takes the time to present additional origin stories for secondary characters such as Deborah Morgan, Maria Laguerta, and Brian Moser. The show subtly conveys the attitudes of its characters, providing clarity on aspects that were left unexplained in Dexter. Throughout its ten-episode first season, some episodes stand out as notably better than others.

Deadline reports that Krysten Ritter has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection in what sounds like a particularly juicy role. The actress will play the recurring role of Mia Lapierre, a “renowned sommelier whose alter ego is the ‘Lady Vengeance’ serial killer.“
Ritter recently posted an image on Instagram saying she was heading out to New York City. Fans took this as an indication that she would be reprising her role of Jessica Jones for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is due to kick off production tomorrow. However, it seems that she’s being brought to the Big Apple by Dexter: Resurrection. Of course, this doesn’t rule out an appearance in Daredevil: Born Again while she happens to be in the neighbourhood.

Krysten Ritter has joined the cast of Dexter: Resurrection. Her role is going to be wildly different from the more heroic character she played in Jessica Jones, according to details divulged about her character.
Per Deadline, Ritter will play a murderous role in the upcoming Dexter sequel series. She will reportedly portray "Mia Lapierre," a "renowned sommelier whose alter ego is the 'Lady Vengeance' serial killer." Of course, serial killers often fall prey to Michael C. Ritter had recently shared that she was heading to New York to start work on an unspecified project, fueling rumors of a return as Jessica Jones in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, but Deadline has now confirmed that she was referring to Dexter: Resurrection.

The upcoming addition to the Dexterfranchise, Dexter: Resurrection, has fans eagerly anticipating new info dumps related to the Showtime series. So far, the cast news is shaping up to be exciting, with several original series members confirmed to reprise their roles. Michael C. Hall is returning to play the fan-favorite anti-hero, with David Zayas and James Remar also playing their respective roles as Angel Batista and Harry Morgan. Additionally, New Blood’s Jack Alcott will play Dexter’s son, Harrison. Jennifer Carpenter, who was on Showtime’s spin-off, Dexter: New Blood, has finally spoken up about whether she will be part of the Dexter: Resurrection cast.
Carpenter played the role of Debra Morgan in Dexter. She is the adoptive sister of the main character; a tough and determined Miami Metro Police Department detective who would often rely on Dexter’s expertise to solve complex murder cases because of her own inexperience and insecurities.

If there’s one series that really doesn’t need to have gone on as long as it has, it’s Dexter. The original eight season show had kind of written itself into a corner over the years, ending in what we can all objectively say was a lousy finale. Then came the unnecessary – but fairly well-received – follow-up, New Blood. And then a prequel series for some reason. And now – despite the insistence and apparent evidence that Dexter Morgan actually died at the end of New Blood – he’s coming back for Resurrection. But one person who won’t be by his side is sister Debra Morgan.
Speaking with People, Jennifer Carpenter outright said she has no involvement with Dexter: Resurrection, with herself and Debra Morgan moving on. “I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I’ve completed that box. I’m proud of it.” Even still,...

Jennifer Carpenter has confirmed that she will not be reprising her role as Debra Morgan in the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection. The actress, who played the character in the original Dexter series and later returned in Dexter: New Blood, addressed the speculation while attending the premiere of 1923 Season 2.
“I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I’ve completed that box. I’m proud of it,” Carpenter told People. “I hope that they’re having a wonderful time. And I’m so happy for the fans to have more to chew on.”
Carpenter originally portrayed Debra Morgan from 2006 to 2013. Her character met a tragic fate in the series finale when Dexter, played by Michael C. Dexter is getting another sequel series, and several familiar characters from the original series will be joining Michael C. Hall in the new show. However, fans shouldn't count on seeing Jennifer Carpenter making her return as Dexter's late sister, Debra Morgan.
After Carpenter's Deb was killed off in the original Dexter, she returned in the show's first sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, when her brother continued to have visions of her as his moral guide. That left the door open for a way to bring Carpenter back for Resurrection as well, even with her character deceased. However, per People, Carpenter has suggested that her run playing Deb in the Dexter universe has come to an end. While she feels like she's "completed that box" personally, she also wished the Resurrection team well, happy that the franchise continues to live on.

The prequel series stars Patrick Gibson as a younger version of Dexter, with Michael C. Hall providing narration (and a surprising on-camera return as well). Set during Dexter’s earliest days working alongside Miami Metro, Original Sin came packed with returning characters, tropes and Easter eggs aplenty for fans of the original show.

Dexter: Original Sin concluded its 10-episode run on Paramount+ With Showtime this past weekend, and you'd be forgiven if you were left a little confused at times by the prequel series. Yes, it was amazing, and star Patrick Gibson did a superb job portraying a young Dexter Morgan, but the show seemed to retcon a few things from the original series, including omitting one character altogether: Dr. Evelyn Vogel. Now, creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips is revealing why she was left out of the prequel series, and his answer might surprise you.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from “Code Blues,” the Season 1 finale of “Dexter: Original Sin,” now streaming on Paramount+ With Showtime.
Over the course of just a few weeks in 1991, Dexter Morgan came into his own as a serial killer.
At least that’s how he tells it at the end of the first season of Showtime’s prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.” In the finale, Dexter (played in his 20s by Patrick Gibson) satisfies the rage of his “dark passenger” by killing his first-ever big bad — Miami Metro Police captain Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey), who, it turns out, was trying to get revenge on his ex-wife by kidnapping and attempting to kill their son, Nicky.
While Dexter has never been the epitome of moral superiority, he has always drawn the line at endangering children. You can thank the traumatized kid who watched his mom be cut to pieces...

The cast of the next Dexter series is expanding! Emmy-winning actor Peter Dinklage has joined Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming sequel to Dexter: New Blood that just started filming recently. Michael C. Hall will also return to play the titular character in the upcoming show. Hall has also been involved in the ongoing prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, the finale of which airs this Friday, Feb. 14.
According to the report from Variety, Dinklage is playing a character named Leon Prater, "a billionaire venture capitalist" with a dark side. It sounds like he could be one of Dexter's next adversaries. Dinklage is one of several new additions to the franchise. Uma Thurman has also been cast and her character is reportedly former Special Ops who works closely with Prater. Are they going to be the next villainous duo that Dexter must contend with?

2025 is already set up to be an incredible year for fans of Showtime's all-time classic series, Dexter. Not only is the new prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, wrapping up its deep dive into the origins of everyone's favorite vigilante serial killer, but another sequel series titled Dexter: Resurrection, is set to premiere sometime later on in the year, and the fans have high hopes that it will give a proper redemption to the franchise following the controversial endings of the original series and New Blood. Dexter, the show where Michael C. Hall played a serial killer who only killed other serial killers, ended in 2013, but has had a huge revival in recent years. First came Dexter: New Blood in 2021, which caught up with Dexter Morgan after he left Miami for chilly upstate New York. That series seemed to end with Dexter's son Harrison giving him a fatal gunshot...but apparently no, because there's a new show called Dexter: Original Sin which reveals that he's getting treatment for the wound.
Dexter: Original Sin will air the final episode of its first season this Friday on Paramount+ With Showtime. Next up is a sequel series called Dexter: Resurrection, which will follow up on the events of New Blood. Hall will be back as Dexter Morgan, Jack Alcott will be back as Harrison, James Remar will return as Dexter's spectral father Harry, and David Zayas will be back as Detective Angel Batista.
