Many of the actors on VH1’s new scripted series The Breaks (premiering Monday, Feb. 20) were just kids during the early ’90s era of hip-hop captured in loving detail on the show. Yet, they’re still able to channel the spirit of that moment in the culture’s history because of how far they’ve gone to prepare for their roles.

For Mack Wilds, who also stars on Fox’s racially charged drama Shots Fired, premiering March 22, that meant actually learning how to spin records in order to add to hip-hop producer DeeVee’s skill set. VH1 liked the response to their film, The Breaks, so much that they’ve decided to continue the story as a series, and it has just been announced that Gloria Reuben is joining the cast.

Reuben will round out the cast as Malthuas “Mattie” Taylor, a department head at a major record company, who will obviously become an integral part of the lives of the three hip-hop artist friends chasing their dreams in 90’s New York.

VH1 announced today that Emmy nominated actress, Gloria Reuben will join the “The Breaks” in a recurring role. The series is slated to premiere January 2017.

Reuben will portray Malthuas “Mattie” Taylor, a powerful and polished department head at a major record company.
