Dennis Quaid's new Paramount+ crime series has debuted with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score from critics ahead of its premiere later this week. Quaid's best performances have often been in movies, the actor getting significant praise for his roles in movies like The Big Easy, Traffic, and Far from Heaven. His latest movies include two releases from 2024, portraying US President Ronald Reagan in the aptly-titled biopic Reagan, and TV show producer Harvey in The Substance. His upcoming movies include the crime drama Sovereign and the sci-fi action film War Machine.
However, Quaid is no stranger to TV, having had various parts on the small screen since the beginning of his career. Some of his bigger roles have come in the last decade or so, starring as Sheriff Ralph Lamb in 2012's period drama Vegas, and having a key role in Crackle's 2015 auction house series The Art of More.

If you watch a lot of Hallmark holiday movies, you'll notice faces that reappear over and over again. Hallmark is nothing if not reliant on safe, predictable storytelling, and this tendency extends to the people they hire to act in their made-for-tv films -- once you've proven that you can provide a stable, likable presence in a lead role, they'll keep on booking you.
But while Hallmark male stars need to personify whatever romantic fantasy Hallmark is selling -- whether that's sensitive, or caring, or supporting, or rugged, or good at fighting fires -- their actresses have an altogether different responsibility. Since a large portion of the Hallmark viewership is made up of women, these actresses need to be aspirational and, above all else, relatable. We need to be able to see ourselves in them, which isn't as easy a task as it sounds. So when they find a performer who can do it well,...

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.
The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.
He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.
The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.
“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”
“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.
The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.
He’ll next appear in Alex Ranarivelo’s Born a Champion, Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle, Andrew and Jon Erwin’s American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Ray Giarratana’s The Tiger Rising, Sean McNamara’s Reagan, in which he’ll play the actor-turned president, and more.

Contrary to what Transplant‘s title may lead you to believe, Tuesday’s Stateside premiere of the Canadian drama is not about a medical transplant team — and that’s a good thing. Instead, the premise of the series — imported by NBC to fill its coronavirus-impacted fall schedule — is about something far more interesting: Bashir Hamed (Jett‘s Hamza Haq) is a Syrian doctor who has come to Canada to escape the civil war in his homeland.
Like many immigrants, Bashir finds himself working in a restaurant instead of the profession he was trained in. Then one night, a truck crashes into the food establishment.

Dennis Quaid is heading to Netflix!
The streaming giant ordered a holiday-themed multi-camera comedy called Merry Happy Whatever which will star Quaid.
He will also executive produce.
The series comes from Everybody Loves Raymond executive producer Tucker Cawley, and if the show is as funny as that, Netflix will probably want a lot more than the eight episodes it's ordered so far.
Related: Sex Education Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix
This isn't Quaid's first foray into television, nor is it his first swing at streaming television.
In 2012, Quaid starred in a network show called Vegas in which he played a Las Vegas sheriff who finds his nemesis in co-star Michael Chiklis.
Quaid also starred in the Crackle series The Art of More from 2014-2016.
That series, about the crime and intrigue inside the glamorous auction houses of New York, is currently in limbo but yet to be canceled.

The venerable Sony Crackle streaming service is looking for a potential joint-venture partner or buyer for its U.S. operations, even as its Latin American service shuts down in April.
Crackle said it would shutter its Latin American subscription video service this week after concluding the business wasn’t economically viable. That news followed a decision last June to pull the plug on the free, ad-supported service in Canada.
“The decision to close Crackle Latin America is unrelated to the U.S. Crackle business, which is operated independently as an ad-supported Avod service,” Keith Le Goy, Sony Pictures Television’s president of worldwide distribution, wrote in a letter to staff that was obtained by Deadline. “We continue to explore potential strategic partnerships for Crackle in the U.S. and will share more information when possible.”

Sony is looking to take on a partner in Crackle, its ad-supported streaming service, in order to make it more competitive in a saturated marketplace.
Mike Hopkins, the former head of Hulu who joined Sony Pictures last fall as chairman of its TV division, disclosed the strategy to employees in an internal email. (See the full email below.) Hopkins said working with a partner could help “drive scale.” A complete sale of the property is not the initial plan, but insiders indicate a willingness to entertain an offer for the entire business.
The notion of taking on a partner has been contemplated at earlier moments during the decade-plus that Sony has owned the service, which was known as Grouper when the company bought it in 2006. In 2014, when a trove of internal documents were revealed as part of the infamous hack into the studio’s computer systems, an email exchange indicated...

Sony Crackle is developing a drama series that hails from Evan Hart and Kyle Stephen, Variety has learned exclusively.
Titled “The Transplant,” the series would follow an American surgeon who, after falsifying medical records to get his daughter an organ transplant, finds himself in Hong Kong. There he enters the dark and prosperous organ harvest trade, or the red market, operating under a very different set of procedures.
Hart and Stephen previously wrote for the Sony Crackle drama “The Art of More,” which explored the dark underbelly of New York auction houses. The pair co-wrote the episode “Ride Along” in the show’s first season.
Hart has primarily worked as an actor during his career. He has appeared in projects like the mini-series “The Bronx Is Burning” and the Showtime series “House of Lies.” He also wrote, directed, and produced the 2010 short film “Nice Tie, Italiano!” which starred Simon Kassianides,...

The Stranger Things franchise just got a little more awesome today. Netflix has announced that actors Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) and Jake Busey (The Frighteners) have joined that cast of the upcoming third season!
Cary Elwes will be playing a character named Mayor Kline, who is described as being "handsome, slick, and sleazy. Mayor Kline is your classic ’80s politician – more concerned with his own image than with the people of the small town he governs."
Jake Busey will be taking on the role of Bruce, "a journalist for the The Hawkins Post with questionable morals and a sick sense of humor."
This is great casting for Stranger Things, and it'll be fun to see how these character end up fitting into this continuing supernatural sci-fi story. No major story details have been revealed for Stranger Things Season 3, but I have no doubt that the creative team will end...
