The legendary Shelley Duvall sadly passed away back in July at the age of 75 – but not long before she passed, she returned to acting after a twenty year break to take a role in the creature feature The Forest Hills (and, by the way, the creature in question is a werewolf). Mafia Wars is a new action/thriller from Saban Films, and Screen Rant has a first look at an exciting clip. The movie tells the story of a recently paroled felon who is given no choice but to go undercover in an attempt to take down the leader of the most infamous mob syndicate in Italy. Mafia Wars was written and directed by Scott Windhauser, whose past work as a director includes the 2017 thriller Cops and Robbers starring Michael Jai White and the 2020 Western Death in Texas.

Amongst a group of films – such as Yim Ho’s “The Extras” and Alex Cheung’s “Cops and Robbers” – that ushered in the Hong Kong New Wave, “The Secret” is the debut feature by veteran and prolific directress Ann Hui. In the animated short awards contender “Cops and Robbers,” directors Arnon Manor and Timothy Ware-Hill feature powerful imagery and a mix of animation styles to deliver a poignant message in response to Ahmaud Arbery’s murder.

With a 7-minute run time, more than 30 artists and animators stepped in to share their perspectives on racial inequality and violence, based on a poem Ware-Hill had written.

The project came together with the help of Jada Pinkett Smith, executive producer of “Cops and Robbers.” “After all this time, we still have to have a conversation about how Black female voices are imperative in the creative process,” she says. “It’s about time that it’s simply just a given.”

After publishing his poem on social media platforms and seeing it go viral, Ware-Hill brought it new life in February of last year, following the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed, 25-year-old Black man, who was shot by a white resident of his Georgia neighborhood while jogging. Releasing a first-person video, in which he recited his poem while jogging, Ware-Hill then caught the attention of Manor—an entertainment veteran with a background in visual effects, for both live-action and animated films—who expressed interest in adapting the video into the short that is now in the Oscars conversation.

Oscar-nominated live-action short films often tackle human-rights violations and other issues plaguing society. The animated shorts tend to lean toward lighter fare, such as a celebration of Black hair and single fatherhood in Mathew Cherry’s 2019 winner “Hair Love,” or Pixar’s fanciful 2018 winner “Bao.” However, short-form animation also has a unique ability to spin visual poetry on hard-hitting issues. Speaking to grief, school shootings, and racist violence, an eclectic group of three animated shorts from Netflix prove the power of animation to go deep.

After video of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery went viral months after his death, writer/performer Timothy Ware-Hill dusted off an old poem and filmed himself reciting it while running in his neighborhood, as Arbery was doing when he was killed. December has already been a really great month for Netflix content drops, bringing dozens of exciting new movies and shows to the service for subscribers to watch. Big hits like the 80s sci-fi family film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, two movies from the thrilling Jurassic Park series, and classic Adam Sandler comedies 50 First Dates and Little Nicky have kept everyone rather busy. But the month isn’t quite over yet and there’s still more to come.

That being said, today has brought with it only two new additions to Netflix’s library, with one of them being the activism film Cops and Robbers, which takes a look at police brutality and racial injustice. The other, however, is a light-hearted animated pic starring one of Hollywood’s biggest actors. So, if you’re in the mood for some laughs and quirky characters, you won’t want to look any further.

Christmas may be over, but this coming week will still deliver a lot of gifts in terms of new Netflix releases. The streaming giant has got a bunch of titles arriving over the last couple days of the year and then it’s dropping more than 40 fresh releases on New Year’s Day. For former Pixar animator Frank E. Abney III, making his short film “Canvas” has been a longtime labor of love. He and his devoted crew have worked on the nine-minute animated film in their off-hours for about six years, all while working on larger studio projects.

Now all that hard work is about to pay off as “Canvas” is one of three unique animated shorts premiering on Netflix on Friday. The others are “Cops and Robbers” and “If Anything Happens I Love You.”

“Canvas” tells the story of a grieving grandfather who loses his creative spark after suffering a devastating loss and finds it again through his inquisitive young granddaughter. Abney, one of Variety’s 10 Animators to Watch in 2016, pulled from his own life experiences to craft the tale, which is CG with hand-drawn segments.

"Police brutality is nothing new but it's more visible now because of cellphones and because of social media helping to share images and video," variety.com quoted Pinkett Smith as saying.

"The difference now is that we are watching executions on television, which is mind blowing. We are watching young men and young women gunned down on live TV and people are in the streets recording it. We've heard about it before and it would get written up, but now you have the visuals that make it real. We get to see it and that's the difference. You can look at it and see for yourself what's happening," she added.

“Cops and Robbers,” the animated short directed by Arnon Manor and Timothy Ware-Hill, is written and performed by Ware-Hill in response to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. After the Arbery video surfaced on May 5, Manor was inspired to create an animated version of Ware-Hill’s poem, which resulted in their collaboration.

Timothy Ware-Hill and Arnon Manor say they made this film “for all the Black men, women and children who have been victims of racial profiling, police violence, loss of life and other injustices just for being themselves.”

Over 30 individual artists, students and VFX companies from around the world collaborated to each create a short segment of the poem with their own visual interpretation of the subject matter and individual animation technique. Half the animators on the “Cops and Robbers” are Black animation artists. The short premieres Dec. 28 on Netflix.

Former Premiere Entertainment Group executive Jack Campbell has launched Octane Entertainment with nine titles for Afm buyers led by This Is Your Death starring Josh Duhamel.

Backed by a Silicon Valley-based investment fund, Octane plans to finance and produce one to two cast-driven, globally appealing features a year and acquire 15-20 third-party titles a year.

This Is Your Death from producers Great Point Media centres on a lethal game show. Giancarlo Esposito directs and stars alongside Duhamel and Famke Janssen. Great Point represents Us rights.

The slate includes comedy And Punching The Clown with Henry Phillips, Sarah Silverman and J.K. Simmons, action title Cops And Robbers with Michael Jai White and Tom Berenger, and thriller Tell Me How I Die starring YouTube comedy sensation Ryan Higa.
