The legendary Shelley Duvall sadly passed away back in July at the age of 75 – but not long before she passed, she returned to acting after a twenty year break to take a role in the creature feature The Forest Hills (and, by the way, the creature in question is a werewolf). That movie is now set to reach theatres in the United States and Canada on October 4th, and with that release just a couple of days away, we’ve gotten our hands on some clips and promos, which you can check out in the embed above. Our review of the film can be read at This Link.

Mafia Wars is a new action/thriller from Saban Films, and Screen Rant has a first look at an exciting clip. The movie tells the story of a recently paroled felon who is given no choice but to go undercover in an attempt to take down the leader of the most infamous mob syndicate in Italy. Mafia Wars was written and directed by Scott Windhauser, whose past work as a director includes the 2017 thriller Cops and Robbers starring Michael Jai White and the 2020 Western Death in Texas.
Screen Rant is happy to present a clip from Mafia Wars that showcases a tense confrontation between its two primary characters. In the clip, Terry is undercover and staring death in the face as the unhinged mob boss Griff decides whether or not to take his life. The gangster movie is coming to Video On...

Jumping Ash (1976) by Leong Po-chih
The realism in the presentation of both the criminal world and the way police worked at the time is also evident, with Leong highlighting the fact that a number of poor people were actually caught between the two. The punishment Callan's girlfriend receives in the hands of two men (despite the fact that one of them gets his share also) and the fate of the blind man, are the most indicatory of that comment. Furthermore, the combination of corruption (even Callan's mother gets a washing machine from a drug dealer at some point) and intense bureaucracy is presented as an obstacle (in Callan's effort) to dispense justice, which was frequently rather hard to overcome. This last aspect is what,...

Stars: Michael Jai White, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Tom Berenger, Patrick Kilpatrick, Victoria Pratt, Chuck Zito, Gillian White, Randy Wayne | Written and Directed by Scott Windhauser
Cops and Robbers stars Michael Jai White as a hostage negotiator who plays a high stakes game of cat and mouse with a cornered bank robber. As the two men learn each other’s identity, they realise they have a shared past, as estranged brothers do, with scores and grudges to be settled…
Can Micheal Jai White ever get a break? The man had obvious skills, both in acting and martial arts, which we’ve seen in a myriad of his previous films. However lately he seems to have become stuck in a rut of appearing own small cameo roles in films or playing cop roles that don’t show off his skillset. Even when he does get to kick some ass his performance seems stifled.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Small Axe” is among the final batch of this year’s Peabody Award winners, which have been announced throughout the week. Variety also has a first look at actor Cynthia Erivo presenting the honor to “Small Axe,” and filmmaker Steve McQueen’s acceptance speech; scroll down to watch.
A collection of five films from McQueen about Black West Indian immigrants in 1970s and early 1980s London, “Small Axe” touches on subjects including police brutality, anti-Black racism, immigrant live and the music, food and culture of the time.
“Watching ‘Small Axe’ was an amazing experience, specifically the ‘Lovers Rock’ episode, which showed the influence of Black music within the U.K.,” Erivo said in presenting the award. “It reminded me of the way my mom loves music, of the way I would listen to music when I was younger. Amongst a group of films – such as Yim Ho’s “The Extras” and Alex Cheung’s “Cops and Robbers” – that ushered in the Hong Kong New Wave, “The Secret” is the debut feature by veteran and prolific directress Ann Hui. Like many of her fellow directors of the New wave Movement, she received her film education abroad, at the London Film School, after a degree in English and Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong and she proceeded in working briefly as an assistant to the director King Hu and then making television films for Radio Television Hong Kong (Rthk) and Television Broadcasts Limited (Tvb). Her experience with local broadcasting corporations mixed with her European film studies resulted in an accomplished and excitingly fresh piece of work.

When discussing a film movement, it’s always difficult to pin down the exact moment it began. With Heroic Bloodshed it’s often considered that “A Better Tomorrow” was the key movie but “The Story of Wu Viet” and “Coolie Killer” before it could be said to have demonstrated themes prior. Going back, we have “The Club” by Kirk Wong in 1981 but even two years before that we have “Cops and Robbers”. So a genre evolves organically rather than emerging fully formed. So it’s an interesting release on blu ray and provides a chance to catch a moment in time as a new style of action began to emerge in Hong Kong.

Netflix not only grabbed a ton of Oscar nominations for its live-action films, it also grabbed three noms for animated fare including “Over the Moon” and “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon.” They scored in the animated feature category alongside Disney/Pixar’s “Soul” and “Onward,” and GKids/Apple TV Plus’ “Wolfwalkers,” while “If Anything Happens, I Love You” is the frontrunner in animated shorts.
It’s an impressive haul for a part of the streaming giant that is relatively new.

We think our little variety act is delicious fun... call us bawdy bon vivants.Back in 2015, we had the wonderful chance to thread and project the only known 35mm print in existence of Robert Butler’s Night of the Juggler (1980)—a memorable evening and a memorable film. In the animated short awards contender “Cops and Robbers,” directors Arnon Manor and Timothy Ware-Hill feature powerful imagery and a mix of animation styles to deliver a poignant message in response to Ahmaud Arbery’s murder.
With a 7-minute run time, more than 30 artists and animators stepped in to share their perspectives on racial inequality and violence, based on a poem Ware-Hill had written.
The project came together with the help of Jada Pinkett Smith, executive producer of “Cops and Robbers.” “After all this time, we still have to have a conversation about how Black female voices are imperative in the creative process,” she says. “It’s about time that it’s simply just a given.”
Kelli Williams, a Philadelphia community artist, used stop-motion animation for her segment, which shows a Black woman in tears with protest signs behind her as we slowly discover the reason for her emotion. “The...

Though the 2021 Oscar nominations will not be announced until March 15, the possibilities were narrowed down in nine categories with the release of the shortlists on February 9. Whether they make predicting the eventual nominees easier or harder is a matter of opinion. Our forum posters, many of whom are Hollywood insiders hiding behind screen names, were quick to sound off with reactions.
While they discussed the reshaping of the race, they cheered for their favorite films and lamented the fact that others have hit the end of the road. Below is just a sampling of their brutally honest comments concerning the Oscar shortlists. Take a look, then jump in here if you’re brave enough.
Best Documentary Feature
Wanda: “City Hall” snubbed… Lazy voters.
S.N.: I think “Welcome to Chechnya” was a very interesting choice and I hope it gets nominated.
Eddy Q: I think people may be underestimating “Gunda.

“Infernal Affairs” is probably the best known of the undercover policeman subgenre, yet go back in 1981, Alex Cheung was also exploring the psychological trauma of undercover work in his award winning follow up to “Cops and Robbers” that would kick start this very theme. Somewhat lost in cinematic history with a very short filmography, his initial output at the formative beginnings of the new wave saw a director of promise that sadly never got to blossom into a more lengthier career. Indeed trying to find a trailer for this review was a fruitless task, which only emphasizes how forgotten these works have become.

In his first collaboration with Arnon Manor on the animated short Cops and Robbers, actor Timothy Ware-Hill adapted a spoken word poem he’d written into a stunning eight-minute piece, meditating on rampant displays of police violence within the United States, and the systemic racism behind them.
After publishing his poem on social media platforms and seeing it go viral, Ware-Hill brought it new life in February of last year, following the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed, 25-year-old Black man, who was shot by a white resident of his Georgia neighborhood while jogging. Releasing a first-person video, in which he recited his poem while jogging, Ware-Hill then caught the attention of Manor—an entertainment veteran with a background in visual effects, for both live-action and animated films—who expressed interest in adapting the video into the short that is now in the Oscars conversation.

Oscar-nominated live-action short films often tackle human-rights violations and other issues plaguing society. The animated shorts tend to lean toward lighter fare, such as a celebration of Black hair and single fatherhood in Mathew Cherry’s 2019 winner “Hair Love,” or Pixar’s fanciful 2018 winner “Bao.” However, short-form animation also has a unique ability to spin visual poetry on hard-hitting issues. Speaking to grief, school shootings, and racist violence, an eclectic group of three animated shorts from Netflix prove the power of animation to go deep.
After video of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery went viral months after his death, writer/performer Timothy Ware-Hill dusted off an old poem and filmed himself reciting it while running in his neighborhood, as Arbery was doing when he was killed. The video gained attention of many, including director Arnon Manor, who had the idea to transform the poem into a collage of different animation styles.

View Conference has set its first three PreVIEW events for 2021. The free virtual talks feature the gamut of animated films: shorts, VR and feature.
First up, on Friday, Jan 15, will be the filmmakers behind Netflix’s three animated shorts: “Canvas,” directed by Frank Abney and produced by Paige Johnstone; “Cops and Robbers,” directed by Arnon Manor and Timothy Ware-Hill; and “If Anything Happens I Love You,” directed by Will McCormack and Michael Govier. The shorts employ three different styles, but each tell powerful and socially relevant stories.
“Canvas” follows a grieving grandfather who learns to embrace his creativity again with the help of his young granddaughter. “If Anything Happens” examines the aftermath of a school shooting. And “Cops and Robbers” uses animation to illustrate Ware-Hill’s poem about racial injustice and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. December has already been a really great month for Netflix content drops, bringing dozens of exciting new movies and shows to the service for subscribers to watch. Big hits like the 80s sci-fi family film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, two movies from the thrilling Jurassic Park series, and classic Adam Sandler comedies 50 First Dates and Little Nicky have kept everyone rather busy. But the month isn’t quite over yet and there’s still more to come.
That being said, today has brought with it only two new additions to Netflix’s library, with one of them being the activism film Cops and Robbers, which takes a look at police brutality and racial injustice. The other, however, is a light-hearted animated pic starring one of Hollywood’s biggest actors. So, if you’re in the mood for some laughs and quirky characters, you won’t want to look any further.

For former Pixar animator Frank E. Abney III, making his short film “Canvas” has been a longtime labor of love. He and his devoted crew have worked on the nine-minute animated film in their off-hours for about six years, all while working on larger studio projects.
Now all that hard work is about to pay off as “Canvas” is one of three unique animated shorts premiering on Netflix on Friday. The others are “Cops and Robbers” and “If Anything Happens I Love You.”
“Canvas” tells the story of a grieving grandfather who loses his creative spark after suffering a devastating loss and finds it again through his inquisitive young granddaughter. Abney, one of Variety’s 10 Animators to Watch in 2016, pulled from his own life experiences to craft the tale, which is CG with hand-drawn segments.
“The spark of the idea came around six years ago or so,” Abney explains. “I...

Los Angeles, Nov 24 (Ians) Actress Jada Pinkett Smith says police brutality is nothing new, and is glad that the atrocity is getting highlighted thanks to social media.
"Police brutality is nothing new but it's more visible now because of cellphones and because of social media helping to share images and video," variety.com quoted Pinkett Smith as saying.
"The difference now is that we are watching executions on television, which is mind blowing. We are watching young men and young women gunned down on live TV and people are in the streets recording it. We've heard about it before and it would get written up, but now you have the visuals that make it real. We get to see it and that's the difference. You can look at it and see for yourself what's happening," she added.

“Cops and Robbers,” the animated short directed by Arnon Manor and Timothy Ware-Hill, is written and performed by Ware-Hill in response to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. After the Arbery video surfaced on May 5, Manor was inspired to create an animated version of Ware-Hill’s poem, which resulted in their collaboration.
Timothy Ware-Hill and Arnon Manor say they made this film “for all the Black men, women and children who have been victims of racial profiling, police violence, loss of life and other injustices just for being themselves.”
Over 30 individual artists, students and VFX companies from around the world collaborated to each create a short segment of the poem with their own visual interpretation of the subject matter and individual animation technique. Half the animators on the “Cops and Robbers” are Black animation artists. The short premieres Dec. 28 on Netflix.

HBO’s latest blockbuster drama effort, Lovecraft Country, is a unique Lovecraftian beast. As adapted by Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, the show takes classic horror, sci-fi, and adventure tropes and adapts them into a timely story of American racism.
Though the series is certainly timely, it’s also timeless. As evidenced by our helpful explainer article, it wasn’t immediately clear when Lovecraft Country even took place. That’s partly because the Jim Crow era of American institutionalized racism was a lengthy one. And the fact that Atticus “Tic” Freeman was a war veteran didn’t help out much. Which war coincided with “whites only” restaurants and sundown towns? World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War – take your pick, really. That pleasant disorientation is enhanced by an equally disorienting soundtrack.
Rest assured, Lovecraft Country takes place in the mid 1950s. But the show’s...

Netflix has acquired its first animated shorts for Oscar consideration. There are three: “If Anything Happens I Love You,” an elegy about grief following a school shooting, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”); “Canvas,” about a Black painter who seeks to rekindle his artistic passion after the passing of his wife, directed by former Pixar animator Frank E. Abney III (“Soul”); and “Cops and Robbers,” directed by Arnon Manor (indie web series “Mondays”) and Timothy Ware-Hill (“Kinky Boots” national tour), inspired by Ware-Hill’s poem about the racially motivated murder of Ahmaud Arbery earlier this year in Georgia.
“Our goal is to bring our members best-in-class animation in all types of formats — features, series, adult animation, anime, and short form,” said Gregg Taylor, Netflix’s director of animated features. “Animated storytelling is most compelling when it can transport,...

This diverse mix of composer Michel Legrand’s work for film is by no means comprehensive, Legrand’s phenomenal career spanned over sixty years. He scored over 200 films as well as theatre and musicals, won Oscars, Golden Globes, and Grammys (to name a few), and worked with a myriad of famed popular musicians. He made jazz records with Miles Davis and collaborated with the directors of the French New Wave. Later in life (and by no means slowing down), Legrand focused his time on classical music, creating concertos, sonatas, and ballet. He died this February at the age of 86 just a few months after the release of Orson Welles’s The Other Side of the Wind, whose score he composed. When reminiscing on Legrand’s work I was taken back to two performances that have always resonated with me; I mused on how in both performances it is the score...

Last month, it was revealed that the R-rated blockbuster It will be available on Digital HD December 19, with the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD slated for release on January 8, 2018. As is typically the case with many hit movies, there are several retailer-exclusives for It, and today we have a glimpse at the Wal-Mart exclusive artwork. Surprisingly enough, the Wal-Mart exclusive is DVD only, and not Blu-ray, but as you can see below, this artwork gives fans a new glimpse at the main villain, Pennywise.
The Target exclusive It cover was already revealed last month, although that retailer exclusive is both Blu-ray and DVD, and it isn't clear why Wal-Mart only has a DVD exclusive version. There will also be a Best Buy exclusive steelbook release, although die-hard fans may want to prepare themselves to pick up yet another version later on in 2018. Director Andy Muschietti confirmed that an...
