South Africa’s Both Worlds is leaning into IP and genre as it brings a packed slate of ambitious scripted projects to Mipcom this week, including an adaptation of the bestseller “The Cape Raider” and partnerships with Federation Studios and actor Djimon Hounsou’s Fanaticus production banner.

The International Emmy-nominated production outfit, which recently released the Cape Town-set comedy-drama “The Morning After” on Prime Video, has wrapped Season 2 of “Recipes for Love and Murder”: Global Screen will be introducing it to buyers this week at Mipcom.

The quirky murder-mystery series starring Maria Doyle Kennedy (pictured), a co-production with M-Net, AMC, AcornTV and Global Screen, is one of several IP-based series that Both Worlds head Thierry Cassuto will be taking to the Cannes industry event.

After nearly 20 years, we're finally getting that sequel to Deep Blue Sea that just enough people want to justify its existence. Thomas Jane won't be back, but SyFy is releasing Deep Blue Sea 2 in 2018, though, a specific release date has not yet been set. What's also good for fans of the original to hear is that the sequel has been given an R-rating for creature violence and gore, and for language. Everything one could possibly want in a movie about scientifically altered, super deadly and smart sharks.

In Deep Blue Sea 2, the plot kicks off with shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun invited to consult on a top-secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). Calhoun is shocked to learn that the company is using the unpredictable and highly aggressive bull sharks as its test subjects. You can probably guess where this goes next, and Warner Bros....

The killer shark genre has seen something of a resurgence lately, and thankfully not the cheesy gimmicky kind. Nope, we’ve been getting serious attempts at aquatic horror lately thanks to The Shallows and 47 Meters Down. And now, it’s resulted in the long-awaited sequel to Deep Blue Sea being pushed into production.

The Darrin Scott-directed film, which was shot in Cape Town, South Africa over the summer, has recently been rated R for “creature violence and gore” as well having some “ strong language.” At least they’re not worried about being too graphic. After all, it’s far too easy to make a PG-13 shark movie these days, so I respect the producers’ decision to go all the way with this new effort.

If you’ve seen 2015’s Unfriended — about a bunch of high school students who are tormented online by the evil spirit of a classmate who was recently bullied into suicide — then you’ve already seen Friend Request, which is about a bunch of college students who are tormented online by the evil spirit of a classmate who recently committed suicide as the ultimate passive-aggressive response to being ignored. And in fact, this “new” movie has been languishing unreleased in the Us for a year and a half, perhaps to get more air between it and the earlier film.

A year-and-a-half ago, Christina Ochoa was crashing on a friend’s couch and borrowing money to get to her auditions. Now, she is about to pivot from a lead role on Syfy’s summer splatterfest Blood Drive (which airs its finale tonight at 10/9c) to starring on The CW’s first military drama.

I've got an incredibly must watch sci-fi fantasy short film for you to watch today called Apocalypse Now Now! This is a proof-of-concept short that is based on the South African fantasy novel and it turned out impressive as hell!

The story centers on Meet Baxter, the kingpin of a smut-peddling high school who’s dating the girl of his dreams. After she’s kidnapped and he's accused of murdering her, he and a supernatural bounty hunter dive into the deep, dark Cape Town underworld full of monsters and myth to save her.

It was announced back in 2015 that the book would be adapted into a film, but as far as I know, nothing ever happened with it. After watching this short film, though, I would love to see it adapted into a feature film!

The short was directed by Michael Matthews and he did an awesome job bringing this story to life.

Not only is the film the first in what could be a series of big-screen adaptations based on fantasy writer Stephen King’s eight-book "The Dark Tower" series, which the author himself referred to as his magnum opus (or masterwork), it’s coming out just a month before another anticipated movie based on one of King’s favourites, It.

If both productions live up to expectations, it will be good news for King’s screen legacy, which has long been in need of an upgrade. The Dark Tower, luckily, co-stars the reigning master of Hollywood image rebuilding, Matthew McConaughey, as the piece’s main supernatural villain known as the Man in Black.

Netflix has released a new trailer for Chadwick Boseman's (Black Panther) new revenge thriller Message From the King. This fantastic looking film follows a man from Cape Town, who infiltrates a sprawling network of lowlifes and elites in Los Angeles. Why? Because he's on a quest to avenge his sister's murder. 

The movie was directed by Fabrice Du Welz (Alléluia, Calvaire) and it also stars Luke Evans, Teresa Palmer, and Alfred Molina. The movie looks like a great and intense movie and it's set to premiere on Netflix on August 4th.

Considering their lack of transparency when it comes to viewership for specific movies and shows, it’s no surprise that Netflix’s release calendar is not akin to a theatrical roll-out. While we often hear of a movie’s release many months (sometimes years) in advance, when it comes to the streaming giant, it may just be a week or two prior we’ll get a heads up that a film is arriving.

Such is the case with a new film led by Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther, 42), the old-fashioned revenge thriller. When fans heard that 28-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps would be racing against against a shark on live TV they were excited, but it turns out the result wasn’t quite what they had in mind.

On Sunday’s Phelps vs Shark: Great Gold vs Great White, the Olympic swimmer tested his racing ability against a number of sharks — but it was all simulated. Instead, Phelps raced against virtual versions of the sharks side-by-side based on their swim rate in a separate race.

The problem? Many fans apparently thought that the retired Olympian would be getting into a swim tank with real sharks.

Burning rubber on the small screen tonight is the first episode of Blood Drive, a new Syfy series that's both a lurid love letter to Roger Corman's Death Race movies and the gory, glorious drive-in days of old, while also making a mark with its own crimson-stained swagger. Taking place in a world circa 1999 where water is coveted above currency and violence is commonplace, Blood Drive is populated with intriguing characters looking to make it across the finish line in a cross-country race with a big prize and an even bigger penalty for losing. There is nothing else on television quite like Blood Drive, and with the series premiering tonight on Syfy at 10:00pm Et, I had the pleasure of speaking with lead actor Alan Ritchson about playing Arthur Bailey, a moral compass in a world gone mad.

We live in the golden age of television, where complex longterm plotting meets stunning visuals and iconic performances. Some days it feels like you can’t move for genre-defined iconic must-watch dramas. But you know what the golden age of TV generally can’t do well? People punching each other in the face and doing awesome martial arts kicks.

Sure, Daredevil had its moments, particularly in season 1, but the second season was a real letdown. Then Iron Fist managed to make a supernaturally powered martial arts dragon dude spectacularly boring. But Cinemax are hoping to produce the first genuinely great martial arts TV show. It’s called Warrior and it originates from the notebooks of Bruce freakin’ Lee. You just don’t get a better martial arts pedigree than that. Apparently, the idea for the series was discovered in Lee’s handwritten notes long after his death, with his daughter...

Although Banshee ended after four seasons, in May of 2016, Cinemax isn't done with co-creator Jonathan Tropper, yet. The premium cable network has just ordered his Warrior TV show to series. A 19th Century martial arts crime drama, Warrior was inspired by an idea from the late Bruce Lee. Although the press release says Warrior received a straight-to-series order, Cinemax did order a Warrior pilot, in August of last year. Production on the first 10-episode season of Warrior will begin in Cape Town, South Africa, this season. The Cinemax TV series takes place during the Tong Wars in San Francisco's Chinatown. Cinemax says it centers on Ah Sahm, "a martial arts prodigy who immigrates from China to San Francisco under mysterious circumstances, and becomes a hatchet man for one of Chinatown’s most powerful tongs (Chinese organized crime family)." Crime drama inspired by idea from Bruce Lee.

Cinemax has picked up the 10-episode straight-to-series drama Warrior.

Warrior is produced for Cinemax by Perfect Storm Entertainment, Tropper Ink Productions and Bruce Lee Entertainment.

Warrior is set during the brutal Tong Wars of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the second half of the 19th century. The series centres on Ah Sahm, a martial arts prodigy who immigrates from China to San Francisco under mysterious circumstances, and becomes a hatchet man for one of Chinatown’s most powerful organised crime families.

Production will commence this autumn in Cape Town, South Africa.

The show is inspired by an idea from Bruce Lee and created by Jonathan Tropper via his Tropper Ink Productions.

Justin Lin and Danielle Woodrow will serve as executive producers for Perfect Storm Entertainment, alongside Bruce Lee Entertainment’s Shannon Lee, and Tropper.

Cinemax is serving up another high-octane action series… this one springing from the mind of an iconic action star.

The network that gave us Strike Back and Banshee has now given a straight-to-series order to Warrior, a martial-arts drama inspired by an idea from the legendary Bruce Lee. Set in the crime-ridden Chinatown of 1870s San Francisco, Warrior centers on Chinese immigrant and martial-arts expert Ah Sahm, who becomes a hatchet man for one of Chinatown’s most formidable crime families. (And lots of punching and kicking is sure to ensue.)

Earlier this year, it was officially announced that Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) and Travis Welker (Jamie Kennedy) will go up against more Graboids in Tremors 6, and now Gross has revealed the release date for the sequel.

According to Gross' recent Facebook post, Universal Studios is planning to release Tremors 6 on January 30th, 2018 (on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD, as per the previous press release below).

No other updates are known at this time, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers posted on further details as they are revealed. In the meantime, we have the previous press release with the official synopsis and casting info:

Oscar Isaac is a dad!

The Star Wars: The Last Jedi actor and his girlfriend Elvira Lind have welcomed their first child, Lind confirmed in a video shared on social media Thursday.

The filmmaker’s project Bobbi Jene won multiple awards, including best documentary feature, at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival — and the new mom expressed her appreciation in the clip posted shortly thereafter.

“If I could, I would be dancing, I’d be jumping up and down, probably all week long,” Lind says in the video, cradling her little one.
