With the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks, fans of Gene Roddenberry's universe were treated to five seasons of heartfelt comedy. This, of course, means series creator Mike McMahan, the writers and animators introduced a plethora of odd elements into the canon. While some of these weird details wouldn't really fit into other Star Trek stories, Lower Decks gives future storytellers the option to include them.
Regardless of whether they appear elsewhere or not, Lower Decks imbued the Star Trek universe with an undeniable sense of fun. Though there are almost too many new elements to mention, it's still worth looking back at the weirdest Star Trek details introduced by the Lower Decks crew. From goofy aliens to playful send-ups of common tropes, the show tackled a lot.

When Curry Barker moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, he thought getting his short films on the festival circuit would be his path to making it as a director. But soon he discovered just uploading his films directly to YouTube was getting him attention. His 2023 horror short The Chair landed him Hollywood representation and a deal to direct a $1 million movie, Obsession. Then in August, he posted the $800 feature Milk & Serial, which he wrote, directed and starred in. It exploded online, attracting 1 million views.
“It just catapulted the amount of meetings I was taking,” says Barker, who notes he met with practically every studio and major horror producer in town.
Barker, also known for his comedy sketches on YouTube, is part of a new class of filmmakers who honed their chops on YouTube before breaking into Hollywood. The platform allows them to flex their creative muscles without...

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”
The series from Lee Sung Jin premieres on April 6. See below for more titles coming to Netflix in April 2023.

When Palm Springs opens we see Nyles (Andy Samberg) moving around a party acting like a Grade-a idiot. He seems unlikable and not in a good way. Then, as Palm Springs progresses we discover that Nyles is actually stuck in a time loop. He's literally reliving the same wedding day (not his) again and again. He meets Sarah (Cristin Milioti) and things seem to be moving in a totally different direction. Until we realize that Nyles is being hunted by Roy (J.K. Simmons) and then ends up, inadvertently, pulling Sarah into the time loop. They both can remember every day that they've relived while nobody in the wedding party has a clue. Nyles and Sarah's relationship deepens and then, if it's possible, Palm Springs becomes even more interesting.
Clearly one of the most original, time traveling/time loop, romantic comedies in recent memory, Palm Springs is truly the sleeper hit of the summer.

I recently had a chance to see a new indie sci-fi film called Time Trap. The movie currently has a limited theatrical release and if it’s playing at a theater near you it’s definitely worth checking out!
The movie has a fascinating, unique, and innovative concept and it was executed really well! The movie was made on a low-budget and it may be a little rough around the edges, but for the most part it’s an awesome movie that I recommend checking out.
It has a smart mind-bending story that follows a group of students who become trapped inside a mysterious cave where they discover time passes differently. The story has some fun playing with the space-time continuum.
The concept is actually pretty terrifying in certain ways. Here’s the synopsis:
A group of students venture into the deep caves of remote Texas to locate a favorite...

You know that old chestnut: don’t go into a big, creepy cave you’re not familiar with in search of a missing person who, incidentally enough, also went into that same cave in search of a family that’s been missing for decades.
Mark Dennis and Ben Foster’s latest film, “Time Trap,” throws that (extremely solid) advice right out the proverbial window in service to an innovative new sci-fi adventure that rips apart both space and time at its very seams. Featuring a cast that includes Cassidy Gifford, Reiley McClendon, Brianne Howey, Olivia Draguicevich, Max Wright, and Andrew Wilson, “Time Trap” takes an already scary premise and bolsters it with some truly twisted riffs on time travel. Again, maybe don’t go in the weird cave.
