Unlike other the other films, this film was released as a television special, and was recorded in Canada with an almost entirely different voice cast. Only Melissa Sturm, Michelle Murdocca, Maddie Taylor and Frank Welker reprise their roles from previous films.
The Wilhelm scream can be heard in the opening credits.
Ed and Edna are directly influenced by the characters Tex and Edna Boyle from Second City TV (1976).
The movie set between Open Season 2 (2008) and Open Season 3 (2010). It would explain the absence of Elliot's children (Gisele, Giselita and Elvis), as well as Boog's love Ursa and Buddy's Wife although Fifi and his friends are not present either but at the end of the film Mr Weenie sees some of his old friends.
