Nearly 10 years after Sons of Anarchy's conclusion, Charlie Hunnam is finally starting to get promising roles after his performance as Jax Teller in the FX series. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Charlie Hunnam fatefully dipped his feet in acting after he was discovered by a production manager when he was 17. Soon after, he landed his first major role in Queer as Folk when he was 18, paving the way for him to explore bigger opportunities in film and television.

After playing myriad roles in several relatively lower-budget films and TV shows, Hunnam got his big break when he got the opportunity to play Jax Teller in FX's Sons of Anarchy. Peter E. Strauss, a longtime leader in the independent film industry, died on Oct. 6 at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 83. Strauss spent over 50 years working in movies and left his mark on both mainstream and indie films.

Strauss got his start in the early 1970s at Allied Artists, where he helped produce popular movies like “Cabaret” and “Papillon.” Later, as head of Rastar Films, he oversaw productions such as “The Electric Horseman.” In the 1980s, Strauss founded his own company called Panache Productions.

He is best known for pioneering new methods of financing independent movies. Strauss created innovative deals that let smaller films get funding from sales to foreign markets. This approach helped the independent film scene in America grow substantially.

In 1997, Strauss partnered with Frank Giustra to launch Lionsgate Entertainment. As the company’s first president, he led Lionsgate’s early success in Independent film production and distribution.

Robert Watts, a production manager on George Lucas’ Star Wars and producer on its first two sequels along with Steven Spielberg’s first three blockbuster Indiana Jones movies and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, died Monday in his sleep at his home in West Sussex, England. He was 88.

His rep Julian Owen of Alliance Media confirmed the news to Deadline, writing: “Goodnight to my wonderful friend and client Robert Watts, Producer of some of the most famous films in cinema history. … Talking about his career was his favourite thing to do. We had some amazing adventures together which I will cherish forever.”

Watts died Monday in his sleep at his home in East Sussex, England, his rep, Julian Owen at Alliance Agents, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We were with him for a decade taking him to conventions all over the world, where he could connect with fans and talk about his career,” Owen said.

Watts also worked alongside Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg on the Spielberg-produced Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991).

Charlie Hunnam has been tapped to star in Amazon’s adaptation of Ed Brubaker’s comic series Criminal.

Picked up to series in January after nearly a year in development, Criminal is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multiple Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker (Westworld, Batman: Caped Crusader) and Sean Phillips.

Hunnam will play Leo, aka Coward, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Paul Negoescu directs story of a village policeman caught up in violent events.

Screen can reveal the first trailer for Paul Negoescu’s Romanian police drama Men Of Deeds, ahead of the film’s world premiere in competition at Sarajevo Film Festival this month.

TrustNordisk has boarded international sales for Birthday Girl (working title), a cruise ship-set suspense drama from Danish director Michael Noer starring Trine Dyrholm.

The cast also includes Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl (As in Heaven) and Herman Tømmeraas (Shame).

René Ezra (Queen Of Hearts) and Matilda Appelin (A Perfectly Normal Family) produce for Nordisk Film Production. The film wrapped shooting on April 22 and is being readied for a March 2023 launch through Nordisk.

Birthday Girl is about a mother, her teenage daughter and her daughter’s friend celebrating a birthday on a cruise ship to the Caribbean.

TrustNordisk has boarded suspense drama Birthday Girl, directed by Michael Noer and led by Danish star Trine Dyrholm. The company will handle international sales rights on the feature about a mother’s persevering quest for justice.

Noer, who co-wrote Birthday Girl (working title) with Jesper Fin, is known for such films as 2018’s Before The Frost, which won the Tokyo Special Jury Prize, and his 2010 debut feature R, a Dragon Award winner for Best Nordic Film in Goteborg. His English-language debut was with the 2017 remake of the classic adventure epic Papillon starring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek.

Anthony Powell, the British costume designer whose decades-long career yielded three Academy Awards, died Sunday at age 85.

“My friend, my mentor, Anthony Powell passed away last evening,” fellow designer Scott Traugott announced on Facebook Monday. We have lost a brilliant designer, a true gentleman. I was so honored to follow in his shadow on many productions. A light has dimmed in our universe. He taught me so much, and helped me so much. I will truly miss him. Everything was told with a very funny Hollywood story.”

The Costume Designers Guild also confirmed the news in a statement Monday on Facebook: “Legendary English costume designer Anthony Powell passed away last weekend. He will be celebrated in a small, private gathering due to Covid restrictions and is survived by two nieces,”

The Costume Designers Guild 892 confirmed the news on Monday night, on their official Facebook page. “Legendary English costume designer Anthony Powell passed away last weekend. He will be celebrated in a small, private gathering due to Covid restrictions and is survived by two nieces,” they said. “Anthony Powell’s passion for his work and for his friends was boundless. The Costume Designers Guild sends our condolences to everyone who enjoyed the pleasure of his company and his unforgettable designs.”

Powell, who won a Tony Award for the costumes of 1963’s School for Scandal, received Oscars in 1978 for Death on the Nile and in 1979 for Tess. He had received his first Academy Award for designing the costumes for Maggie Smith’s eccentric Augusta...

Powell’s Academy Awards came for “Travels with My Aunt” (1972), “Death on the Nile” (1978) and “Tess” (1979). He was nominated for Steven Spielberg’s “Hook” and “102 Dalmatians.”

He worked with top directors of the 1970s and ’80s including Spielberg, Roman Polanski, George Cukor and William Friedkin.

Born in Manchester, U.K. Powell was a graduate of the Central School of Art and Design in London.

This month on Amazon Prime Video UK sees the final three episodes of Neil Gaiman fantasy drama American Gods arrive, along with the first three episodes of new comic book animated series Invincible, adapted from the books by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman.

Movies-wise, there’s the sequel to John Landis’ 1988 comedy Coming To America, which follows the story of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem as he’s drawn back to the US ahead of taking on Zamunda’s throne. Also, in his most anticipated role since he put on a beanie for those Kia car ads, Robert de Niro plays a granddad fighting with his young grandson over the use of a bedroom in The War With Grandpa.

Gregory Sierra, best known for his roles as Sgt. Miguel “Chano” Amanguale on “Barney Miller” and Julio Fuentes on “Sanford and Son,” died on Jan. 4 in Laguna Woods, Calif., according to Orange County Health Dept. records. He was 83.

The New York-born-and-raised actor, of Puerto Rican descent, found success in his recurring role as Fred G. Sanford’s neighbor. His career remained steady through the end of the ’90s, often finding Sierra playing law enforcement roles. He appeared on “Miami Vice,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “Hill Street Blues” and “MacGyver.” His TV roles included guest spots on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “The X-Files.”

Before making it to “Sanford and Son,” Sierra had ties to Norman Lear. He appeared in one episode of the beloved sitcom “All in the Family” as Paul Benjamin, a Jewish extremist. Paul and Archie Bunker strike up a friendship after someone paints a swastika on the family’s front door.

Gregory Sierra, who was a key part of two major 1970s sitcoms as Julio Fuentes on Sanford and Son and Sgt. Miguel “Chano” Amenguale on Barney Miller, has died. He was 83.

Sierra died Jan. 4 in Laguna Woods, California, from cancer, according to a family spokesman. His death just became public today.

Born in New York’s Spanish Harlem, Sierra worked with the National Shakespeare Company and in the New York Shakespeare Festival. He also appeared in off-Broadway plays and was a standby on Broadway for The Ninety Day Mistress in 1967.

Moving to Los Angeles, Sierra had guest appearances on such shows as It Takes a Thief, Medical Center, The High Chaparral, Mod Squad, The Flying Nun and Kung Fu.

In films he was also a supporting actor in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Getting Straight (1970), Papillon (1973), The Towering Inferno (1974) and the Orson Welles project The Other Side of the Wind.

It’s the 22nd century, and Earth has been destroyed by a religious-based war. The central plot of the recent HBO Max sci-fi program is the brainchild of several producers, including Aaron Guzikowski, who recently joined a Gold Derby Meet the Experts TV Showrunners panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

Of his fellow producer, creator and directing legend Ridley Scott, he reveals, “It’s been quite a dream, actually; much more than I even could have hoped for. He’s become a mentor to me. He directed the first two episodes but has been intimately involved in the whole production… When it comes to story, he’ll defer to me in terms of the grand plan for the whole thing.
