A skilled filmmaker can achieve an awful lot with a modest budget, and Canadian director Adam MacDonald (2014's Backcountry) fashions every resource he has at his disposal to render his 2017 horror Pyewacket a frighteningly effective genre offering that interlocks the supernatural and trauma's toll. As grimly elegiac as it is deeply nerve-jangling, MacDonald's sophomore feature film zeroes in on the emotional turmoil begat by a family death, exploring the shattering aftereffects of bereavement. At its core, Pyewacket's narrative orbits a fraught mother-daughter relationship and a botched revenge plan, which ultimately serves as the backboard for the ensuing scares that come, sometimes running on all fours, at the viewer via a hectic finale.

A couple of years ago, Olivia Holt had a prominent role in the time travel slasher movie Totally Killer. She’s one of the leads in the rom-com slasher Heart Eyes, which reached theatres earlier this month. Now, she’s already at work on another genre project, as she’s starring in a film called This Is Not a Test, which is described as “The Breakfast Club meets 28 Weeks Later.” Adam MacDonald is directing the apocalyptic horror thriller, which is based on a YA novel by bestselling author Courtney Summers – and it was MacDonald who took to social media to announce that production is now underway!

Out Come the Wolves, released in 2024, tells the tense story of three individuals facing threats both human and beastly in the deep Canadian wilderness. Directed by Adam MacDonald, known for his unflinching wilderness thrillers Backcountry and Pyewacket, the film centers around Sophie, her writer fiancé Nolan, and Sophie’s lifelong friend Kyle, who agrees to train Nolan in hunting skills. As old dynamics resurface and tensions rise, the three are soon stalked by a roaming pack of wolves during a hunt gone wrong.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I have a very interesting treat. Those who remember my interview with Alexandra West about the movie Pyewacket know we both loved it, so this month I’m thrilled to have a chat with the film’s director, Adam MacDonald, who you might also know from his film Backcountry and the third season of Slasher.
For this month’s film, we’re taking a look at MacDonald’s favorite of all time, a South Korean thriller from Hong-jin Na called The Chaser (2008). Now, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical based on the synopsis provided by IMDb: A disgraced ex-policeman who runs a small ring of prostitutes finds himself in a race against time when one of his women goes missing.
From that synopsis I was expecting something overly stylized and action-oriented like Taken,...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where I’m celebrating the Halloween season with one hell of a creepy movie courtesy of Alexandra West. You may know West as one half of the Faculty of Horror podcast, author of Films of the New French Extremity and The 1990s Teen Horror Cycle, and prolific contributor to a list of major horror outlets too long to count. Think of West as that teacher that everyone likes because she doesn’t ham it up with goofy schtick, and she explores complex topics in a way that always seems to make sense.
West chose a perfectly moody, demonic yarn for October in Adam MacDonald’s 2018 horror film Pyewacket. The film follows Leah Reyes (Nicole Muñoz), a teenage girl at odds with her mother (Laurie Holden) following the death of Leah’s father. Leah is brooding and moody, finding comfort in her...

Despite horror’s thematic binding to the world’s most prominent fears – this a year of parental devastation and horrors inside family units – my top genre films from 2018 still revel in variety: arachnid puppets, Nazi experiments, zombie musicals alike. Such morbid creativity would stick out like a sore severed thumb any other year, but in 2018? You could drown out aforementioned absurdity with Nicolas Cage’s descent into occult revenge madness alone.
As I said, it’s been a wild year for horror – and a damn fine one at that.
My ranking comes after killing many darlings, given my final tally of 118 seen horror movies this year. Dig deeper, past these listed twenty, and you’ll still find plenty of gems. The following treasures just shine a little brighter and demand more attention. Feature debuts, streaming darlings, mainstream nightmares, they’re all here. August’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are off to a great start, as we have numerous titles arriving this Tuesday that fans are going to want to add to their collections. Severin Films has put together a stellar limited edition release of The Changeling, and Scream Factory is resurrecting John Carpenter's Someone’s Watching Me! on Blu-ray as well. Scream Factory has also teamed up with IFC Midnight for a trio of releases—Pyewacket, Lowlife, and Wildling—and Marrowbone arrives on both formats, too.
Other notable releases for August 7th include Predator and the Predator 3-Movie Collection in 4K, Desecration, The Keeping Hours, and Dead Shack.
The Changeling Limited Edition
It is perhaps the most chilling supernatural thriller of our time. It remains a career peak for star George C. Scott and director Peter Medak. Now the film that Martin Scorsese calls, "One of the scariest movies ever made,...

In 2015 it was announced that Frightfest were set to bring us, under a “Frightfest Presents” banner, some of the horrific delights of their Glasgow and London festivals on DVD and VOD thanks to a partnership with Icon Film Distribution. And whilst that partnership did garner a number of releases – including the likes of Some Kind of Hate, Emelie, Night of the Living Deb and The Sand – the label went dark soon after, with not only the two-year deal coming to an end, but also likely due to the fact that Frightfest partner Icon had some financial woes in 2017, eventually been sold to Kaleidoscope in March of this year.
Skip forward to today and news reaches us that the Frightfest Presents label is reborn, this time in co-operation with Signature Entertainment – a label who we have supported since the early days of their direct to DVD B-movie start-up, with titles such as SnowBeast,...

The unusual title wasn’t the only reason I have been interested in watching Pyewacket for a while now. Everything I have read about the movie on social media, from people I trust the opinion of, has been positive, so I was very much looking forward to it.
The best horror movies, in fact the best movies, create characters and relationships that you care about, relate to and want to watch unfold. Pyewacket does all of this. The main relationship is between Leah, played by Nicole Munoz, and her mother, played by Laurie Holden. Like many mother/daughter relationships it is a very love/hate one. After the death of their father and husband, both women are dealing with the situation in different ways. Leah is listening to angry...

Forget teen-friendly jump scares and Ouija board pranks – this the real deal, that goes deep into the dark heart of the occult. From the producer of cult hits The Void and The Witch, Pyewacket can take its place alongside those other-wordly modern horror classics.
Adam MacDonald, who directed the impressive killer bear thriller Backcountry, has crafted a deliciously taut slow burner, with outstanding central performances from Nicole Munoz as witchcraft-obsessed teenager Leah, and The Walking Dead’s Laurie Holden as her mother. As surprising as it is inventive, the film plants a seed of dread from the moment teenager Leah performs an occult ritual in the woods, building to an excruciating climax that will do for...

Out today in limited theaters and on various VOD platforms is writer/director Adam MacDonald’s stunning occult-fueled thriller, Pyewacket, which is centered on a teenager named Leah (Nicole Muñoz) and her mom (Laurie Holden), who have been coping with a recent family tragedy in very different ways. Their inability to communicate drives a wedge between them, with Leah utilizing the dark arts as a coping mechanism, and as you can probably guess, no good can come from the angsty teen summoning demons to do her bidding.
Daily Dead recently spoke to MacDonald, Muñoz, and Holden about their experiences collaborating together on Pyewacket, and the trio also discussed the real-life inspirations behind the project, how they were able to inject a bit of their own experiences into their performances, and how much they enjoyed collaborating on Pyewacket as well.

"Be careful what you wish for, someone might be listening." How in Satan’s pitchfork-lined hellscape is Hereditary a debut feature? Ari Aster’s inheritance nightmare is abusively tense and traumatic even before an end-all third act crashes down with thunderous implications. Through my screening’s *entire* running length, two fellow critics flanking both my sides audibly gasped and ducked to ward off anxiety attacks – one dry-heaving at points when suspense become unmanageable. That’s what you’re in for. A seductively paced ancestral bone-quaker that’ll bind you, gut you, and laugh as you writhe in discomfort.
In other words, Praise Be The Genre Overlords For I Do Not Need Sleep Nor Sanity To Be Happy.
Hereditary tells of the heartbreak and misfortune that haunts Annie Graham’s (Toni Collette) family. Husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne), son Peter (Alex Wolff) and daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) mourn their grandmother’s death with normality, and at first, Annie follows suit. She spends...

Happy March, readers! Hard to believe another month is upon us, but that just means we have more new horror movies to look forward to in the coming weeks on various digital and VOD platforms. "Pyewacket can take many forms, don't trust your lying eye."
Playing with the occult and black magic probably isn't the best idea... unless that's your thing and you're ok with having demons in your life. We've got a creepy trailer for an interesting horror film coming out called Pyewacket and it tells the story of a young girl who dabbles in the occult. Things turn into a nightmare for her when she puts a curse on her mom for fun, but as you might expect... things go horribly wrong. An evil presence known as Pyewacket begins to terrorize them both.
There are no big names attached to the film but it looks like a good horror movie that I'd like to check out!

Any horror fan worth their salt knows that rituals and witchcraft are two things that you simply don’t fuck with. And yet, the entire modern-day teenage population of North America apparently just can’t seem to help themselves. The latest in this ongoing canon of adolescent stupidity hails from nearby Canada, and whilst its genre roots seem sturdy enough, the film itself really struggles to ever really get the blood pumping.
Pyewacket (pronounced – exactly as you’d expect – pie-whack-it) comes almost totally devoid of bells-and-whistles, choosing to deliver its classic teenage-trouble supernatural tale very much straight-up. Troubled girl and her recently widowed mother clash, girl wishes her mother was dead, girl performs bloody ritualistic ceremony in an attempt to kill mother, girl regrets it; fairly boiler-plate stuff. There’s no obvious signs of humour or hokeyness, no cackling broom-bound old ladies, and no real knowing nods...
