It appears as if paying a huge amount of money to Cameron Diaz to lure her out of retirement has worked, as the Netflix hit Back in Action just scored the largest weekend debut for an English language movie since 2022. Diaz stars in the action comedy alongside Jamie Foxx, and was reportedly paid $45 million dollars by the streaming service to appear in two movies, making her Back in Action paycheck $22.5 million.

Per The Wrap, director Seth Gordon's first feature film since 2017's Baywatch brought in a whopping 46.8 million views during its premiere weekend, making it the biggest debut for a movie since the 2022 Ryan Reynolds sci-fi action flick The Adam Project. Second place wasn't even close, as The Secret Life of Pets 2 scored 8.9 million views, with the original film coming in third at 5.2 million views.

The Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz-led action movie brought in 46.8 million views on Netflix during its opening weekend, marking the most views in a premiere weekend for an English-language movie since 2022’s “The Adam Project.”

“Back in Action,” which reached No. 1 in 85 countries, was the most-watched English language movie for the week of Jan. 13, outpacing viewership for “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which took the No. 2 spot with 8.9 million views, and “The Secret Life of Pets,” which was third on the list with 5.2 million views. “Knight and Day” took fourth place with 5.2 million views, holiday thriller “Carry-On” took fifth place with 3.6 million views and “Despicable Me 3” took sixth place with 3.4 million views.

Everyone loves a good thriller, and for Netflix subscribers, it doesn't seem like it matters from what part of the globe they come from. Subtitles couldn't keep viewers away from Ad Vitam, a new French movie that debuted on the platform at the top position of the most-watched non-English movies from the catalog. In just one week, the movie accumulated 17.1 million views, and its debut managed to outperform huge titles like Carry-On and The Secret Life of Pets 2.

Harlan Coben’s series “Missing You” held onto the top spot on Netflix’s most-watched shows list, outpacing the debut of “American Primeval.”

After scoring the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows last week as the limited series debuted to 21.7 million views, “Missing You” maintained its top spot on the list despite dropping to 15.2 million views during the week of Jan. 6. Viewership for “Missing You” outpaced the launch of Western series “American Primeval,” which took the No. 2 spot on the list with 10.4 million views.

Still, “American Primeval” racked up a bigger audience during the week than docuseries “Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action,” which took third place on the English TV list with 7.7 million views, as well the debut of WWE’s “Monday Night Raw,” which took the No.

The Secret Life of Pet 2, an American animated movie, is a sequel to the famous film The Secret Life of Pets (2016). It was released in 2019 under the co-direction of Chris Renaud and Jonathan del Val with Universal Pictures and Illumination being the producers.

Fortiche Production has once again set the stage in Annecy, revealing their next animation project, Penelope of Sparta, a sci-fi animated film.

The film is being developed by Jérôme Combe, co-founder of Fortiche Production and producer of Arcane, and Silvia Martelossi, an animator for The Secret Life of Pets 2 and The Grinch.

The movie is being developed with seasoned screenwriter Amanda Overton, who previously served as executive story editor for Arcane's first season.

There's less than a month to go until Despicable Me 4 arrives in theaters, and Illumination has released a new promo which takes a shot of Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Warner Bros.' tax write-offs, and the MCU.

The pro wrestler and actor vowed to change the "hierarchy of power" in the DC Extended Universe with the 2022 movie, only for it to flop at the box office and bomb with critics and fans alike. From there, Johnson's plans to take over the franchise failed and he was promptly ousted when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.

As for the 100-year slate of "Mega Minions" movies, it's a tongue-in-cheek dig at Marvel Studios and its habit of revealing slates of movies and TV shows years before they're released.

It's all meant in good fun, though we're sure Johnson doesn't appreciate being made fun of in this way.

Update: It may be a stretch, but we could coin a new phrase and call this the cat days of spring. To wit: Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie, which began early overseas release last month, took the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on the domestic, international and global charts this frame.

The offshore session in 60 markets was $27.1M, lifting worldwide to $152.2M. The voracious kitty had paws aplenty with overseas markets down just 3% from last weekend. The international box office cume is now $100.7M.

In China, Alcon partnered with Stars Collective to distribute the film via China Film Group and Alibaba Pictures and opened to $8.2M, starting from Saturday. In two days, Garfield has surpassed the lifetimes of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Migration.

The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.

Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.

This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.

Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.

“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”

Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.

In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.

Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).

“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

Harrison Ford in “Shrinking,” now streaming on Apple TV+. The Critics Choice Association (Cca) announced today that legendary actor Harrison Ford will receive the Career Achievement Award at the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards. The awards show, hosted by Chelsea Handler, will broadcast Live on The CW on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's Rotten Tomatoes score ruins a major Harrison Ford streak that began with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The final appearance of Ford as the iconic adventurer and archeologist has been caught in a peculiar position ever since it was announced. The hope was that Indiana Jones 5 would be a fitting send-off for Harrison Ford as he returned to one of his most iconic roles. That also meant that the pressure was on the movie to deliver a better ending for Indiana Jones and get more positive reviews than the last entry in the franchise.

The reality is that the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Rotten Tomatoes score has not been quite as high as expected. The movie originally debuted on the review aggregator with a Rotten rating from critics following its premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Warner Bros/DC’s The Flash sped into 78 overseas markets this weekend, grossing $75M, below the $85M-$95M we saw coming into the frame. With domestic’s slow-crawl three-day included, that makes for a $139M global opening. This is lower than projections, with general audiences not rushing out to see the deeper universe pic.

As we noted coming into the frame, there was a question mark over how deeply the tabloid headlines surrounding star Ezra Miller have seeped into overseas awareness. The initial audience was ultimately more fanboy and male-skewing. There’s an emotional story linked with The Flash/Barry Allen’s mother in the film, but females didn’t come out. Reaction was mixed. China had a great 9.3 score on Maoyan while France’s AlloCiné score is a not great 3 out of 5 stars and critics are low there at 2.5. Some UK reviews are on the low end as well.

However, Disney’s prowess at the animated box office has waned since the pandemic, with several animated films moving directly to Disney Plus, bombing at the box office, or failing to beat competing studios.

Exclusive: UTA has signed veteran comedian Dana Carvey for representation in all areas.

Carvey is best known for his memorable six-season run on Saturday Night Live. He went up to star in the 1996 sketch series The Dana Carvey Show for ABC and the subsequent Hulu documentary Too Funny To Fail: The Life & Death of The Dana Carvey Show in 2017. Other TV credits include The Larry Sanders Show, Just Shoot Me!, Fairly Odd Parents and Rick and Morty.

In film, Carvey starred in in Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2. He also voiced the role of Dana in Hotel Transylvania 2 and the role of Pops in The Secret Life of Pets 2.

Carvey currently co-hosts the popular podcast Fly on The Wall alongside UTA client David Spade. He previously impersonated Mickey Rooney in the podcast series You Must Remember This.
