In an interview with Consequence leading up to her second turn serving as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live, Lady Gaga told us what makes the late-night sketch show so unique. “I’ve always loved lots of different kinds of art. So being able to be a host, but also be the actor in the skits, and then be the musical guest and bring my artistry as Gaga — it’s really cool to be able to do it all in one place. SNL is such a rare show where they really do celebrate that.”

Lady Gaga returned as Saturday Night Live musical guest with lively performances of two tracks from her brand new album.
Gaga, who also hosted the show, opened with the dance-pop “Abracadabra,” the second song off of Mayhem, which Rolling Stone‘s Brittany Spanos reviewed as “the year’s strongest pop release yet.” She followed that up with the funk-inspired “Killah,” which she sang partly backstage at Studio 8H.

Speaking of “Abracadabra,” Lady Gaga may have pulled off the ultimate “Saturday Night Live” magic trick during her two musical numbers in this week’s episode: dancing furiously and singing live.
That combination is not for every “SNL” musical guest, let alone one who is also expending energy as a host who’s appearing in nearly every sketch in the show. But Gaga pulled it off with “Killah” aplomb … if that’s not a phrase that would offend the catchy-superlative-averse characters in the closing “No More Slay” skit.
Gaga appeared in every segment of the 90-minute show but two, the only exceptions being the Trump-themed cold open and Weekend Update. But whatever effort she’d put into practicing lines for the sketches clearly hadn’t taken any time away from whatever hours were spent rehearsing the choreography for two musical numbers that made “hyperkinetic” feel like a woeful understatement.

A day after her latest album, Mayhem, was released, Lady Gaga reminded Saturday Night Live that she can sing.
“I know you might be thinking I’m here to promote my album, Mayhem, but I’m actually here to remind you I’m an amazing actor,” she said during her monologue.
But, it turned out, Gaga was in full voice during the sketches.
After riding across New York on an electric suitcase in the opening sketch alongside Marcello Hernandez, Gaga teamed with Bowen Yang for a parody duet. Dressed in a red dress, the pair mocked up their own version of Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.”
“It’s later that evening and we’re wasted in Times Square,” sings Yang. “So, I eat a full Big Mac and I shave off my body hair,” sings Gaga. “And then she bites me on both my nipples left and right, and I...

Little Monsters, rejoice: Lady Gaga made her triumphant return to Studio 8H to serve as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live for the first time since 2013. The Oscar and Grammy winner previously pulled double-duty on the show's 39th season, and has appeared as musical guest for hosts Ryan Reynolds (2009), Justin Timberlake (2011), and Tom Hanks (2016). The multihyphenate Gaga, who won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for A Star Is Born, has been promoting her latest album, Mayhem, which just dropped on March 7. Here are the best moments from Gaga's second hosting gig, from the opening monologue to the best sketches.

Lady Gaga kicked off her Saturday Night Live episode with some jokes about her movie Joker: Folie à Deux.
“Anyway, I’m an actor now,” the Oscar and Grammy winner says during her opening monologue before quipping, “I select films that would showcase my craft as a serious actor, films such as Joker 2. Apparently, people thought it was awesome. Joaquin [Phoenix] and I even got nominated for a Razzie, which is an award for the worst films of the year. So we won worst onscreen duo.”
She continues, “But jokes on them. I love winning things. My Razzie brings me one step closer to an Egort. It’s like an Egot, but it’s hurtful.”
Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to 2019’s Oscar-winning Joker, was nominated for seven Razzies after bombing at the box office last year. The movie ultimately won the Razzies for worst screen combo of Phoenix and Gaga and worst sequel.

Lady Gaga's new album, Mayhem, just dropped on Friday, but a number of critics are already singing its praises. The album scored 85 on Metacritic based on the first 11 reviews counted. By the time you read this that number will likely have changed. But if it holds steady, Mayhem will be the highest-scoring record of her career.

"Bow down, little monsters!" says Helen Brown (The Independent UK). "For her sixth studio album, Mayhem hails the return of your Mama Monster to all her shock-horror-bop glory." She adds, "At a moment when America’s leaders seek to shove its marginalized citizens back into the shadows, she invites them back into the centre of the floor, celebrating their defiant differences in the bright strobe lighting."
Alexis Petridis (The Guardian) writes, "It’s consistently well-written, teeming with hooks and liberally sprinkled with intriguing musical left-turns.

In the lead-up to Lady Gaga’s latest album, Mayhem, there’s been a lot of talk about Gaga returning to her roots. It’s been five years since her last pop release, the Nineties-house-inspired, cyberpunk concept album Chromatica. Chalk it up to timing (it was released at the dawn of the pandemic), but the album didn’t inspire the type of fervor it deserved upon its release. Since then, she’s been back to focusing on movies and jazz, even combining those other two modes for Harlequin, a companion...

Lady Gaga has finally dropped her new album.
Mayhem is her long-awaited solo follow-up to 2020's Chromatica — not counting 2024's Harlequin, a Joker: Folie à Deux companion album. She has been busy since the start of the decade, recording her second collaborative album with Tony Bennett (Love for Sale) in 2021 and contributing music to 2022's Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack. "The album started as me facing my fear of returning to the pop music my earliest fans loved," she told Pitchfork in January. Will her return to her roots bring her back to the Grammys?
Gaga has been a Recording Academy favorite from the very beginning, so much that it actually cost her a Best New Artist nomination. She had already contended for Best Dance Recording for her debut single "Just Dance" in 2009, so she was ineligible for the breakthrough award the following year when her debut album, The Fame, was eligible for consideration.

Lady Gaga is about to make her fifth appearance as “Saturday Night Live” musical guest — and second as host — this weekend. So to prepare, she stopped by the 30 Rock offices to share her creative process with the cast.
In a new promo out Wednesday, the “Abracadabra” singer sings what she sees (à la Randy Newman in “Family Guy”) as comedians Andrew Dismukes, Devon Walker, Ashley Padilla and Heidi Gardner attempt to get some work done.
Naturally, no one is safe from Gaga’s impromptu piano ballads, including Dismukes’ 2 p.m. breakfast sandwich, Walker’s big swing of a hat and Gardner’s obvious signs that she sleeps at the office. Check out the NBC teaser, below:

Saturday Night Live's50th Anniversary celebration recently culminated in a special event, bringing back hosts and stars from the show's past. It was a significant ratings success for the network, bringing in close to 15 million viewers for the spectacle. However, as the adage says, the show must go on, and a new batch of hosts has been announced for the next two episodes of the series. Not only does the newly announced lineup include a pop music superstar, but it also features a former host who was fired a few years ago.
According to Variety, the recently announced lineup includes formerly fired cast member Shane Gillis and singer/actress Lady Gaga. The decision to include Gillis comes less than a year after he made his return to the sketch comedy series as a host. He was previously fired prior to his 2019 debut after a slew of controversial comments and past jokes resurfaced.

Practical Magic is a film revolving around the magically gifted sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The fantasy romance drama was based on the namesake book by Alice Hoffman and saw the sisters use magic to destroy the evil spirit of Gillain’s abusive boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, played by Goran Visnjic.

Filmmaker Pablo Berger had never made an animated film before. He’d never even considered it until he read Sara Varon’s graphic novel “Robot Dreams.” Having recently lost his best friend and mother, the story of friendship and loss spoke to him on such an emotional level that he decided to adapt it — and learn how to make an animated film.
He spent two-and-years on animation education, but wanted to bring something from his previous directing experience: working with some of the best Spanish actors. Said Berger while on the Toolkit podcast, “In most animated film, [the characters] tend to overact.”
Berger began by working with a small animation team led by art director José Luis Ágreda and character supervisor Daniel Fernández Casas before “an army” of animators brought his vision to life.
“I started saying [to the animators], ‘I’m going to treat you as actors, you are my actors,’” said Berger. “They...

American rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) is once again scoring headlines with his latest track that is, apparently, aimed at making his “career disappear.” This comes after he announced earlier this year that he would soon be jumping back onstage after over four years, with his new album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace). And so he has, with his glorious swag.

This exclusive single of his has been titled Houdini, and the Goat has really brought about something much different than before as he aims to kill off his alter ego who earned tremendous popularity with his album from 1999, The Slim Shady LP. But what’s really iconic is how the rapper is dressed as he takes down his alter ego, ironically, as Batman’s sidekick, Robin.

Pablo Berger’s “Robot Dreams,” which gets a theatrical release from Neon at an as-yet-unannounced time this year, was one of the animated delights of 2023. The Spanish/French hand-drawn dramedy (adapted from Sarah Varon’s wordless graphic novel) concerns the bittersweet friendship between lonely Dog and Robot, which he buys for company, in a version of ’80s Manhattan populated with animals. It’s garnered awards buzz in a longshot quest for an Oscar nomination this season.
After premiering at Cannes, “Robot Dreams” earned the Annecy Contrecham Award along with The Animation Is Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize. It was also selected as the runner-up for Best Animated Film by both the Los Angeles and Boston Film Critics groups.
Although the Spanish director was enamored with the graphic novel when he read it in 2010, he didn’t consider turning it into an animated feature until after making two live-action films,...

From Slick Rick and 2Pac to Shyne and Bobby Shmurda, prison time impacts musical careers, mostly for the worst. Young Stoner Life (Ysl) top dog Young Thug has been incarcerated for more than a year on charges of conspiracy to violate the Rico Act. Yet, in spite of that tragedy and turmoil, he’s here to set the record straight with his first album since 2021’s Punk, assisted by executive producer Metro Boomin and a supporting cast of his A-list rap peers.

“Business is business,” Young Thug says at the tail end of “Parade on Cleveland,” the opening track to his third studio album. Over a particularly hard-hitting 808, the Atlanta rapper proceeds to parrot the phrase 19 more times in under 20 seconds, turning a potentially prosaic statement into a thrilling declaration of intent.
Despite Young Thug’s continuing legal issues, when it comes to spitting wackadoodle lyrics set to quirky trap beats, it’s still business as usual for the Mc. While Business Is Business’s foreboding black-and-white cover art acknowledges Young Thug’s current incarceration upfront, and “Parade on Cleveland” features a voice message from the rapper calling in from a Cobb County detention facility, nearly all of the material on the album was recorded before his 2022 imprisonment. This is made exceedingly clear on the jangly “Cars Bring Me Out,” which includes a dated reference to pandemic side hustles.

News of the album first arrived via a mysterious Qr code posted to Young Thug’s Instagram last week, which brought fans to a website featuring the artwork for the album (a photo of him in a courtroom alongside several other defendants). One of the surprise animated films premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this year is called Robot Dreams, a Spanish production made by Catalan filmmaker named Pablo Berger. The delightful animated movie is an entirely dialogue-free story set in the 1980s in New York City, following a dog character known simply as "Dog" as he builds a relationship with his new robot friend. This is Pablo Berger's first animated film, after making the features Blancanieves and Abracadabra previously. It's a super sweet, uplifting story about friendship and even though there's not a single spoken word in the entire 90 minute film, it's still captivating throughout anyway. Neon announced today that they have taken the North American rights to Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger’s first animated feature film “Robot Dreams,” based on the award-winning graphic novel of the same name by Sara Varon. The movie will be screened for the first time in Cannes this coming Saturday, May 20 in the Special Screenings section of the festival. The acquisition marks the first sale made at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
According to the official synopsis, “Robot Dreams” “follows Dog, who lives in Manhattan and one day, tired of being alone, decides to build himself a robot, a companion. Their friendship blossoms, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of 80’s NYC. One summer night, Dog, with great sadness, is forced to abandon Robot at the beach. Will they ever meet again?” Well that certainly sounds traumatic (but potentially heartwarming).
