Not to be confused with the Hugh Jackman film of the same name, this Van Helsing, originally titled Wrath of Van Helsing, is a British film from producer Scott Jeffrey and his Jagged Edge Productions. And regular readers of this site will know what that means…
Four English lasses Ellie, Briony, Alex, and Shauna are going hiking.
And where you may ask are they going hiking in fishnet stockings and thigh-high boots? The Zone, which they must have thought was a goth club. Actually, it’s a fenced-off nuclear dumping ground, England’s answer to Chernobyl. And not only is it fenced off, but there’s also garlic on the road into it. So it’s no surprise when they get attacked by hooded, neck-bitting creatures.

For Stephen King’s short story fans, the American TV series adaptation known as “Chapelwaite” has been a welcome reinvention of King’s short story entitled “Jerusalem’s Lot.” Even viewers who might never have read King but enjoy horror have flocked to the first season of the eerie tale of Captain Charles Boone, played by Adrien Brody.
Since its premiere on August 22, 2021, “Chapelwaite’s” depiction of the Boone family and its creepy tribulations in Preacher’s Corners, Maine has been a popular destination for any type of mature viewers who enjoy a bit of dark suspense and a strong storyline.
Writers Peter and Jason Filardi have recently enjoyed an official renewal of the miniseries for a second season and the “Chapelwaite” fanbase continues to expand. Universal Pictures, home of the most famous monsters of filmland is developing a new feature based on author Bram Stoker's 'vampire hunter' "Dr. Van Helsing", to be produced by James Wan ("Aquaman") and directed by Julius Avery ("Overlord"):
"...'Professor Abraham Van Helsing', debuting in the 1897 gothic horror novel 'Dracula', is a Dutch doctor with a wide range of interests and accomplishments, including being the archenemy of 'Count Dracula'.
"As author Stoker, described him: He is a seemingly arbitrary man, because he knows what he is talking about better than anyone else. He is a philosopher and a metaphysician, and one of the most advanced scientists of his day, and he has, I believe, an absolutely open mind. This, with an iron nerve, a temper of the ice-brook, and indomitable resolution, self-command, and toleration exalted from virtues to blessings, and the kindliest and truest heart that beats,...

It’s taken years for director Alex Kurtzman to be able to fully unwrap the box office flop that was “The Mummy.”
The 2017 Tom Cruise film was expected to kick off Universal’s Dark Universe franchise, extending to revivals of “The Bride of Frankenstein,” “Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde,” and “The Invisible Man” with Javier Bardem, Russell Crowe, and Johnny Depp attached to the respective projects. However, plans for the Dark Universe were scrapped after “The Mummy” failed to find life at the box office, making less than 32 million opening weekend on a budget of an estimated 190 million.
“I tend to subscribe to the point of view that you learn nothing from your successes, and you learn everything from your failures. And that was probably the biggest failure of my life, both personally and professionally,” Kurtzman told The Playlist’s “Bingeworthy” podcast. “There are about a million things I regret about it,...

The 2017 “The Mummy” reboot box “was probably the biggest failure of my life,” its director, co-writer and producer Alex Kurtzman said of the Tom Cruise box office bomb, but one that ultimately improved his skills as a filmmaker.
In a Friday conversation on the “Bingeworthy” podcast, Kurtzman — who is now helming Showtime’s sci-fi series “The Man Who Fell to Earth” — reflected on the critical and commercial disaster, which was originally set to launch Universal’s cinematic Dark Universe. While he is set to produce a slew of films — including “Now You See Me 3,” “Van Helsing” and several untitled classic projects about Dracula, Frankenstein and the Hunchback of Notre Dame — he hasn’t directed a feature since 2017.

It’s interesting to see that the classic monsters of yesteryear, the kings of horror storytelling – Dracula, the Mummy, the Wolfman – are all returning to the [small] screen in new and different takes on the existing mythos. Us Brits had a go with films like The Mummy Reborn and its sequel and the more recent Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing; both made on a low budget by indie filmmakers. Now it’s the turn of American indie king’s The Asylum to have a crack at a legendary horror icon with Dracula: The Original Living Vampire – a film whose title would suggest was Supposed to be a cash-in on the Sony/Marvel film Morbius… after all, in the comics Morbius if dubbed “The Living Vampire” too!
But this is definitely no Morbius.

British actress Kate Beckinsale has been synonymous with action flicks most of her career and likely first became aware to American audiences thanks to her leading role in the Michael Bay WWII film “Pearl Harbor” opposite Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett. Netflix’s “Shadow and Bone” arrived on TV this spring just in time to fill the “Game of Thrones”-sized void in the fantasy adventure series genre of late and nabbed the numbers to prove it.
Adapted from Leigh Bandugo’s novel series, the first of which shares the same title, the series is a timely, apt parable of the Grisha, a blessed people afforded special powers, as they assert themselves into a warring society that often has designs on harming or destroying them, particularly in the case of Alina (Jessie Mei Li), a mapmaker who discovers she is a Sun Summoner, with the rare ability to control light.
So how do you create costumes for a show with no set parameters on history’s timeline, as seen in the convention-bending series? “The main body of the show has an 1870s, Russian-Prussian influence, but we didn’t want to make it a period show,...

Chances are you'll recognize Dan Cade from his many and diverse television roles in recent years.
From recurring appearances on Amazon Prime's Absentia and TNT's Legends to his portrayal of vampire hunter Roberto on Syfy's Van Helsing, Cade is a versatile actor with a boatload of extra skills rooted in his martial arts training and other physical pursuits.
Speaking to TV Fanatic from London, Cade shares some of the key elements to how he approaches his characters.
As Van Helsing Season 5 opened, Jack (Nicole Muñoz) was thrown back in time to the days before Dracula rose and encounters a human Bathory with her merry band of vampire hunters where we find Cade's Roberto.
"We all stick into the shadows. You know, hunting the vampires. [Roberto's] basically the sidekick of Bathory, one of the main heroes in the first three episodes, hunting the sisterhood.
"He's introduced as an intense, strange character.

There's a lot of the fantasy-horror genre to see on the big screen and on streaming services these days, with little to distinguish one movie or series from the other. One standout is Van Helsing, that sleeper hit that's surprised everyone with its compelling drama and unique version of the Dracula myth. The show keeps some classic vampire mythology in the story while combining some of the elements of a good old-fashioned zombie apocalypse.

The writing was on the walls in 2017 when “The Mummy,” the patient zero of Universal’s planned Dark Universe mega-franchise, bombed at the box office. With projected losses of nearly $100 million for Universal Pictures, the film failed to launch what was supposed to be a sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe analog for the studio. While the Dark Universe is being refashioned on a smaller scale (starting with films like last year’s sleeper hit “The Invisible Man”), the original plan is no more. In a recent interview with The Playlist, Eric Heisserer, the creator of “Shadow and Bone” and the screenwriter of “Arrival,” talked about his experience dipping into the waters of the Dark Universe, and why it fell apart.
“It was a very strange experience,” he said. “There was certainly a big brain trust of writers around the table. You had a lot of voices and none of them could agree on much.

This Van Helsing article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere.
From the dynamically retooled opening title sequence to the Jack-centric Transylvania storyline, it takes only moments to recognize that Van Helsing’s fifth and final season promises to take fans on a wild ride as it brings to a close its delightfully circuitous tale of horror’s most iconic vampire hunting family. Season premiere “Past Tense” doesn’t represent the first time the Van Helsing family story finds itself in the past, but there seems to be a more concerted effort this time to employ traditional time travel elements as the unanswered questions mount.
It’s been sixteen months since the season four finale, but the head of the Van Helsing clan remains noticeably absent from the story even though her imprint is unmistakable. Fans of the series understand Kelly Overton’s (Vanessa Van Helsing) pregnancy last season limited her participation,...

Aleks Paunovic stands out in a crowd in many ways. At 6'5" tall, he quite literally towers over most people, but, honestly, it's his incredibly friendly and enthusiastic demeanor that is most memorable.
He is one busy guy and has been for quite a while. The odds are excellent that you've seen him on both small and big screens in his roles on TV shows like Van Helsing, iZombie, and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, as well as films like War for the Planet of the Apes, Numb, and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
Even just talking over the phone, it's hard not to get swept up in his passionate approach to the various projects he's working on and dreaming about.
Most recently, he's been winning (and breaking) hearts as Breachman Bojan "Boki" Boscovic aboard TNT's hit show, Snowpiercer. With the Snowpiercer Season 2 finale nearing and Season 3 filming already on the way,...

Universal Pictures, home of the most 'Famous Monsters of Filmland" is developing a new feature based on author Bram Stoker's 'vampire hunter' "Dr. Van Helsing", to be produced by James Wan ("Aquaman") and directed by Julius Avery ("Overlord"), after the studio previously tried to reboot the character with Hugh Jackman in 2004:
"...'Professor Abraham Van Helsing', debuting in the 1897 gothic horror novel 'Dracula', is a Dutch doctor with a wide range of interests and accomplishments, including being the archenemy of 'Count Dracula'.
"As author Stoker, described him: He is a seemingly arbitrary man, because he knows what he is talking about better than anyone else. He is a philosopher and a metaphysician, and one of the most advanced scientists of his day, and he has, I believe, an absolutely open mind. This, with an iron nerve, a temper of the ice-brook, and indomitable resolution, self-command, and toleration exalted from virtues to blessings,...

“Overlord” director Julius Avery will helm an original horror/thriller inspired by Universal’s “Van Helsing,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
James Wan will produce via his Atomic Monster banner with Michael Clear. Atomic Monster’s Judson Scott will serve as executive producer.
The logline for the script is being kept under wraps, but the film is set in the world of “Van Helsing.” Avery will also rewrite the script written by “Black Widow’s” Eric Pearson, who wrote the original script.
Universal has remained committed to creating filmmaker-driven projects based on characters from the studio’s vast monsters legacy. That approach proved successful with Blumhouse and Leigh Whannell’s “The Invisible Man,” for which the studio decided not to push forward with the initial notion of an interconnected universe, and instead halted and reassessed. “The Invisible Man” went on to gross $130 million globally and marked...

Fans of Hugh Jackman are celebrating his birthday on social media, and the Logan star got in on the celebration by posting a video of himself very much enjoying his birthday cake. Turning 52 this year, a beaming Jackman can be seen taking bites of a greenish cake in the outdoor dining area of a restaurant. "Slice of heaven," Jackman utters, undoubtedly making many of his followers wishing they had a piece. Someone off-camera then wishes Jackman a happy birthday, and he responds by thanking them before digging back in to his dessert.
Jackman is of course especially well known with comic book and Marvel fans. He spent nearly two decades bringing the role of the live-action Wolverine to life in the X-Men movie series. Starting with the first installment in 2000, Jackman would play the rugged superhero over the next 17 years, concluding with the acclaimed movie Logan in 2017. Although he didn't...
