There's a new The Hunger Games prequel coming up. Following the recent release of the fifth book in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, an adaptation will follow late next year.
Sunrise on the Reaping will take place after the events of the previously released prequel novel and adaptation, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which came out in 2023, but before the original films and novels. It will follow fan-favorite character Haymitch Abernathy, whose adult version was played by Woody Harrelson in the original The Hunger Games films. Set to start production fairly soon, Nexus Point News claims Charlie Plummer is eyed to play the young Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping.

The Art Vs. Artist Discourse: The endless and spiralling debate over whether art can be separated from the artist has taken centre stage in the modern cultural landscape as renowned and beloved writers, filmmakers, musicians, and poets face scrutiny over their transgressions, infidelities, and misdemeanours. In this digital era of cancel culture, where information spreads like wildfire, immoral and problematic behaviours are exposed faster than ever, forcing fans to grapple with a difficult choice: defend the art they cherish or distance themselves from the artist behind it. In the field of film, where collaborative efforts create complex works of art, the question arises: Should an artist’s personal controversies overshadow her cinematic achievements on screen?
The argument that an artist’s personal life is pertinent to the appreciation of their art will not hold as an individual’s morals or life choices have little bearing on the quality of their work.

Hollywood has simply moved on from one Kevin Spacey, and unfortunately, nothing Liam Neeson and Sharon Stone has said or will say can change it.
Well, Brian Cox is entering the chat to tell us that Kevin Spacey is one of the best pals, not to add boss, a guy can have. Cox’s statements come as another alleged victim sued Spacey in a UK court.
Brian Cox Denies Kevin Spacey Is Abusive
In 2017, a series of sexual harassment accusations speedily sank Spacey’s Hollywood career. In 2023, after the court found him not guilty of these allegations, he tried to get his life and career back. Well, I’d say that he succeeded in getting one of those things back.
In some of his interviews, Spacey did admit to doing somethings he’s not proud of – probably even getting a bit handsy – but he’s past that now and has...

Did Claire Foy Earn Less Than Matt Smith For Her Role In Netflix’s The Crown? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Guess what? Even playing the Queen doesn’t guarantee royal treatment. The Crown’s Claire Foy got paid less than her on-screen husband Matt Smith. The reason: Smith had Doctor Who fame, and apparently, that carried more financial weight than portraying Britain’s most powerful woman. The pay gap went public, outrage followed, and Netflix scrambled to clean up the mess.
After the backlash, Foy reportedly received about £200K ($274K) in backpay—a late but necessary fix, The Guardian reported. Producers insisted the issue wouldn’t repeat and promised that “no one gets paid more than the Queen” in future seasons. But by then, Foy had already wrapped up her reign as The Crown prepared to move into the 1970s with a new cast.
The irony? This wasn’t some low-budget...

January movies tend to have a certain air to them. This time of year is not typically when Hollywood studios bring their A-game, unless we're talking about the expansion of an Oscar movie or something along those lines. For the most part, this stretch of the release calendar is full of a lot of schlock, with the occasional surprise. (The found footage monster flick "Cloverfield" is a great example of an exception to the rule.) I say this all to set the table before we talk about Mel Gibson's new crime thriller "Flight Risk," which has all of the markings of a typical January movie. In some ways, it is. In other ways, it's worse than typical. But no matter how one wants to slice it, this is the first out-and-out terrible movie of 2025.

With a stellar career spanning almost 70 years, Christopher Plummer has earned his reputation as one of the best actors of all time; whether it's his work in illicit dramas or in animated films, he captivates with his magnetic presence and charisma. Plummer plays many morally complex and powerful characters, from cruel villains to gritty businessmen, his roles and his career have left a lasting impact on Hollywood and cinema in general.
Potentially best known for his legendary role as Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music, one of the best musicals of all time, or his Academy Award-winning performance as Hal Fields in Beginners, Plummer always shows incredible depth and nuance in his abilities. Updated Jan. 6, 2025, at 3:45 p.m. Pt with Nikki Glaser ranked following the 2025 Golden Globes.
Original Story Published Jan. 2, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. Pt:
From 1944 to 1981, the Golden Globes opted not to have an emcee, with Robert Preston and Linda Gray being the first to tag-team the role in the 39th year. The ceremony returned to host-less the following year before employing a series cohosts – including the likes of William Shatner, Charlton Heston, Joan Collins, Faye Dunaway, and Tim Curry – from 1984 until 1995. After that, the Globe host gig was retired until 2010, when Gervais reinvigorated the format. For the past 15 years, several hosts have come and gone, for better and worse. Here’s our definitive ranking of just how golden those emcees performed, from worst to first:
8. Jo Koy (2024)
In 2024, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the scandal-ridden longtime governing body of the Globes, was out and the ceremony relocated from NBC to CBS.

A Complete Unknown has landed on a major box office chart by the end of its first full week in theaters. Constructing the immense worlds of “Gladiator II” was no easy feat.
And as Ridley Scott details in an exclusive new featurette, which you can watch below, that all started with making sure the screenplay was just right.
“Writing is the most important entity you can possibly have before beginning anything,” Scott said in the featurette. “When I started to think about a sequel, I met with David Scarpa and we sat and talked because I had certain parts in my head.” It’s understandable why Scott would choose Scarpa – the writer had also done “All the Money in the World” and “Napoleon” with the director.
As Scarpa said in the featurette, “He said, essentially, ‘I’d like you to start watching Gladiator II.’ And, of course, I was really excited.”
In the featurette you will also learn how Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla became the heart of the movie, how they...

For well over over five decades, Christopher Plummer was one of our most esteemed and honored actors across all acting fields. He hwon two Tony awards (out of seven nominations) for his stage work — the musical “Cyrano” (1974) and the one-man show “Barrymore” (1997), which was later turned into a film. For his television work, he has also won two Emmy Awards (out of six nominations) for the TV movie “Arthur Hailey’s The Moneychangers” (1977) and for his voice-over performance in the animated “Madeline” (1994).
But similar awards for his work in film eluded him for many years. True, he did co-star in 1965’s “The Sound of Music,” a film he had disdained for the longest time but one that was a phenomenon at the box-office. The musical ran in theaters for over 4 1/2 years and, adjusted for inflation, “The Sound of Music” has grossed $2.366 billion, currently making it the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

Director Luke Gilford’s first feature-length work (after some shorts and music videos) shares aesthetic genetic material with his photographic book and exhibition of the same name. Young Dylan is a seemingly straight local working-class guy who lives with his alcoholic mother (Robyn Lively) and little brother Cassidy (Joey DeLeon). Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind this awards season’s buzziest films continues with Gladiator II, Ridley Scott’s follow-up to his 2001 Best Picture Oscar winner. The sequel, which gets viewers back to ancient Rome with a loaded cast that includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington and Connie Nielsen, just passed $100 million in domestic box office as it contributed to this past weekend’s lucrative Thanksgiving frame, growing its global gross to $320 million after two weeks in theaters.

Taxi Driver screenwriter Paul Schrader says he could’ve done a Frank Sinatra biopic, but the project died over his insistence on casting a "canceled" actor to star. Schrader, who has worked as both a director and writer, has been attached to a number of unproduced biopics, but his Sinatra movie stood out. The legendary singer and actor has been rumored as a biopic subject for years, but this long-dreamed-about Sinatra movie has yet to materialize. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are the biggest names trying to bring Sinatra’s story to the screen, but their planned project has reportedly stalled.
Famed Scorsese collaborator Schrader may not be involved in this proposed DiCaprio-starring Sinatra biopic, but he has considered the idea of making his own movie about the life of the superstar mafia-connected crooner. The agreement would only come if he was allowed to cast one particular actor as the leading man.

Ridley Scott's bombastic "Gladiator II" has been slicing its way through the box office thank to its incredible cast and people's love for the original film, although critics have been slightly less enamored with the sequel. Our own "Gladiator II" review praised Denzel Washington's performance as gladiator promoter Macrinus in particular and noted that there are a number of impressive action scenes, but also several parts that fall flat. No amount of pure spectacle can make up for a good story or thoughtful filmmaking, and unfortunately, it sounds like Scott might have had the wrong priorities during production.
In a podcast interview with "DocFix" (via WorldofReel), "Gladiator II" cinematographer John Mathieson called Scott's approach to the film "lazy," adding that he had changed over the years that they had worked together. Mathieson has collaborated with Scott on six of the director's films so far, including the original "Gladiator...

The gates to the arena are open once more. Inside, acts of loyalty and betrayal, battles of wills and fights for ideals await. Prayers are offered to a multitude of gods and ancestors as those whose individual histories — forged from stolen inheritance, valor, land, purpose, and identities — wait for a response. Inside the gates where bloodshed and war await, there is also hope — though battered, bruised and knocked to the ground — that remains in the fight. This arena is Gladiator II and in it, Ridley Scott stares down the world as it rolls forward, a chariot holding all we could be.

Director Ridley Scott breathed new life into the swords-and-sandals genre with an exhilarating Gladiator sequel. Gladiator II picks up on the events of the first movie and ends with a hint of a third installment. He told Entertainment Weekly that Gladiator 3 is inevitable, but added that he's yet to dive deep into development. "People say, 'Have you got [a third film]?' And I say, 'Of course,'" he asserted. "That's the knee-jerk answer. Have we got it yet? Not really. I mean, of course, I was thinking about it even when I was doing Gladiator II on the basis of who will survive. Such was the love for Hugh Grant’s devilishly splendid antagonist Phoenix Buchanan in “Paddington 2″ that the actor was rewarded with a BAFTA best supporting actor nomination. While practically everyone acknowledged it was richly deserved (not least for his unforgettable prison dance as the credits rolled), it was no small feat for a family comedy led by a CGI bear. The other nominees in that category that year were for the distinctly less PG “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “All the Money in the World” and “The Florida Project.”
“Paddington in Peru” — the long-awaited third film in StudioCanal’s hugely successful Paddington franchise — may not have generated quite the same level of critical acclaim as the second (widely regarding as a masterpiece and therefore difficult to top). But Olivia Colman has stepped into Grant’s tap-dancing shoes as the new casting addition (and a potential baddie) in style.

"Gladiator II" spoilers follow.
Is an empire — or a nation, for that matter — doomed to self-destruct? Is a dream of a better life, a better society, a better world, something completely foolish, or might there still be worth in it? If, as Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) says in the first "Gladiator," "what we do in life echoes in eternity," will these echoes ever reach us on the mortal plane in time for real change to happen?
These and many more questions have been on my mind, if not all of our minds, in the last few weeks, and coincidentally, they are on the minds of the characters in (as well as the people who made) "Gladiator II." Even before this month's troubling events, it has felt like America, if not all Western society, has been headed for a reckoning. Thus, the world in which director Ridley Scott makes this...

Ridley Scott has been trying to squeeze a rhinoceros into the Colosseum for 25 years.
Back in 1999, when he was shooting his first Gladiator film, he talked to animal trainers about the possibility of bringing a real 6,000-pound rhino onto his set but was told the horned animals were too difficult to control. Then he talked to CGI experts to see if a digitized one could be rendered for the movie but learned that the technology was budget-bustingly expensive.
For the next quarter-century, it became a running joke among Scott and his crew. “If we ever do a sequel,” Scott’s producer, Doug Wick, said in an interview in 2020, “Ridley gets his rhino.”
Well, they finally did a sequel, and Ridley got his rhino, a state-of-the-art, remote-controlled animatronic version whipped up by Industrial Light and Magic that can clock speeds of up to 40 miles an hour — while being ridden by a guy with a sword.

“Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.
With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.
It’s also the record expense for a director over 80. Paramount’s decision to entrust Scott clearly speaks to his past performances, particularly internationally.
We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

Director Ridley Scott has opened up about why one of his next movies is in a genre he's never done before, explaining what influenced his decision to tackle something new. The longtime director's original claim to fame was his sci-fi movies, having created both the Alien and Blade Runner franchises. While he would continue to expand the Alien movie timeline with prequels like 2012's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, he never got the chance to do the same with the Harrison Ford-led film. Instead, he began branching out into different genres across his career.
Despite creating two classic sci-fi franchises, Scott's historical epics have become his claim to fame. These include Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Napoleon, with the upcoming Gladiator II also falling into this category. Other realistic films he's done include Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies, and The Counselor, emphasizing just how much the director can embrace a multitude of film genres.

Other realistic films he's done include Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies, and The Counselor, emphasizing just how much the director can embrace a multitude of film genres.

Russell Crowe was not happy with Ridley Scott making a Gladiator sequel without his main character. However, Scott replaced Crowe with Paul Mescal and made Gladiator II, which will hit the US theaters on November 22. Early reviews are out and the film has a mixed reception, clearly hinting that it fell short of the original film.

Scott’s sequel follows Maximus’ son Lucius as he is brought back to Rome as a slave and enters the Gladiator arena, just like his father. Besides Mescal, the film also features an ensemble cast including Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger. However, even the talented cast couldn’t cover up these glaring issues in the film.

West Side Story and future Snow White star Rachel Zegler has issued an apology for her comments about Donald Trump supporters following the 2024 presidential election. Shortly following the election results, Zegler made a series of posts on her Instagram story where she said there was "a deep, deep sickness in this country. She continued by saying, May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace, and another four years of hatred, leaning us towards a world I do not want to live in. She concluded it with "F--- Donald Trump." This statement was controversial to some, with Zegler receiving a great deal of backlash, while others supported her in speaking about what was on her mind and a fear millions of Americans had.

In 2000, director Ridley Scott asked us all, "How much do you think about the Roman Empire?" and unleashed "Gladiator," an action-packed swords-and-sandals epic that became the second highest grossing movie of the year and took home Oscars for Best Picture and Best Actor. The Best Actor was Russell Crowe, who played Maximus, a Roman general sworn to revenge after his wife and son are killed and he's sold into slavery. When a movie is as big as "Gladiator," studio executives start seeing dollar signs in their eyes and dreaming up sequels. There was one problem, though: "Gladiator" ended with Maximus dying after defeating the evil Emperor Commodus (a sneering Joaquin Phoenix). No matter: a sequel was demanded, and for decades now, Scott has been trying to pull one off. At one point, goth rocker and sometimes screenwriter Nick Cave was commissioned to pen the script, and he cooked up a...

“Gladiator” ends where it began, with the hands of its protagonist brushing gently along with the breeze through fields of wheat; “Gladiator II” opens with the hands of its own protagonist sunk into a bowl of harvested grain. It’s this sort of circular thematic tying between generations that immediately advertises something of a genuine interest on the part of Ridley Scott to revisit one of his most beloved classics—for the first time, tackling the immediate follow-up himself rather than passing the reins off to some Canadian or other.
Those understandably confused as to why Scott, facing an endless slate of upcoming projects—certainly more than any other octogenarian in his field, at least—would choose a sequel to “Gladiator” (given the film’s particularly definitive finale) as one of them need only look to those opening moments to understand what attracts him to this universe; single stories may end,...

Released in the last year of the 20th century, Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” paid tribute to Hollywood’s past by embracing the tools of its future. The film’s sheer grandeur could only be accomplished by combining modern digital effects with practical methods followed by filmmakers of yore, but spectacle isn’t the sole reason for its commercial success or cultural dominance. Its script embraced the unaffected charms of old-school melodrama and broad-strokes epic storytelling, both of which are grounded in Russell Crowe’s genuine movie star turn as the brawny, soulful warrior Maximus. Whatever its deficiencies in terms of political depth, historical accuracy, or even visual panache, “Gladiator” endures because it innately understands that crowd-pleasing entertainment can’t be phoned in; it requires a sincere investment in traditional dramatic tenets that too many either take for granted or dismiss as antiquated.

Matt Damon reflects on his thoughts about Harvey Weinstein’s reputation and the impact on personal relationships (Photo Credit – Facebook/Wikimedia)
Back in 2017, Matt Damon pulled no punches about Harvey Weinstein’s troubling rep. Chatting with ABC’s Popcorn with Peter Travers, Damon asserted, “I knew I wouldn’t want him married to anyone close to me,” reflecting on his Good Will Hunting producer’s notorious behavior.
While he’d always known Weinstein wasn’t “Mr. Nice Guy,” the shocking scope of accusations stunned Hollywood. Damon’s remarks spotlighted the industry’s reckoning as allegations against Weinstein pushed a shift that changed the entertainment landscape. Damon acknowledged that Weinstein’s abrasive personality and womanizing ways were hardly secrets. “When you hear Harvey this, Harvey, that—look at the guy. Of course, he’s a womanizer.” Still, Damon insisted that few knew of the alleged criminal behavior until it became public.

Members Club is a new horror comedy about Wet Dreams, a troupe of male strippers who were at their prime back when The Full Monty was a thing. Now they’re well into middle age, their middles are well out of shape and the bookings are drying up. Drying up to the point that their manager, Deano has just dropped them. But not before managing to book them a gig at a 12-year-old’s birthday party.
Refusing to admit defeat, or face the prospect of getting a real job, Alan takes charge and soon has a well-paid gig lined up. Of course, we know there’s a catch, but all Alan, Neil, Ratboy, and Carly can think of is the promise of their first big payday in years.

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has extended its first-look deal with Oscar-nominated producer Kevin Walsh and his The Walsh Company shingle, to continue to develop and produce original films and series for the service.
This is a sweeter deal, and positions Walsh to become a bigger supplier for Apple’s slate of originals. It comes after Walsh produced Apple Original Films’ The Instigators, which launched as the most-watched movie on Apple TV+; and the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon. Up next is another Apple original, Echo Valley, a Michael Pearce-directed thriller that stars Julianne Moore alongside Sydney Sweeney from an original screenplay by Brad Ingelsby. Produced by The Walsh Company and Scott Free Films, that film debuts next year.
Walsh is also in the middle of a potential sequel to The Instigators, sorting it out with Apple, director Doug Liman, co-writers Casey Affleck and Chuck MacLean and Artists Equity partners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Spider-Man: No Way Home united a divided fan base when Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland shared the same screen. The latter mused about playing the part and his MCU debut.
Excitement peaked for Captain America: Civil War when Spider-Man appeared in the trailers. Fans have been anticipating the characters debut following news that Marvel Studios cast Tom Holland. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfields performances in the role were tough acts to follow, but Hollands previous films proved he could play the part with effortless, boyish charm. Marvels gambit paid off; Holland was immediately accepted as the next Spider-Man, bolstering the MCUs expanding ensemble and playing an integral role in pre and post-Endgame eras. Holland revealed in a Rich Roll podcast he had qualms about his casting before Civil War, doubting he would make a good impression.

Ridley Scott is inarguably one of our greatest living filmmakers. From sci-fi masterpieces such as "Blade Runner" to underrated recent dramas such as "All the Money in the World," the man hasn't lost a step despite being well into his 80s. But is it possible that Scott just made the greatest film of his illustrious career? That may well be the case, if Scott's assessment of his own work means anything, anyhow. Per the filmmaker, his upcoming sequel "Gladiator II" may well be the best thing he's ever done.
In a recent interview with Empire, the director discussed his forthcoming sequel to the 2000 historical epic "Gladiator," which went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Unafraid to set expectations rather high, Scott made a pretty bold claim. "It's the best thing I've ever made," he boldly told the outlet. "One of the best things. I've made a few good 'uns,...

Gladiator II is expected to do well at the box office upon its release, and Ridley Scott will break a seven-year-old record if it makes over $568 million. Although it's been over 20 years since the original Gladiator came out, interest in seeing the sequel has never died down. Gladiator 2 is one of the most anticipated movies of 2024 due to Ridley Scott's return to the Roman setting, its action-packed trailers, and the star-studded cast including Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Mescal. All those factors make the movie's box office prospects promising.
How Gladiator 2 does at the box office will be quite important for Ridley Scott in particular. The director's movies have faltered at the box office in the years since The Martian gave him a new highest-grossing movie. Gladiator previously held that record after making $451 million (via The Numbers), and there is at least some hope that the sequel could outperform the original.

A new “Gladiator 2” trailer is here, offering a more extensive preview of Paramount’s epic sequel to the Best Picture-winning 2000 film.
Ridley Scott is back in the director’s chair for the aptly named “Gladiator II,” which finds Paul Mescal playing the grown son of Connie Nielsen’s character from the first film, Lucius. In an epic journey that mirrors the one Crowe’s Maximus went on in “Gladiator,” the sequel finds Mescal crossing paths with those who wronged him in the gladiatorial arena with an A-list ensemble that includes Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. “With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people,” the official synopsis states.

Ridley Scotts long-gestating Western novel adaptation would be the perfect movie follow-up to the Kurt Russell-starring Old West cannibal thriller Bone Tomahawk. Although it wasnt a massive hit on its initial release in 2015, in the decade since, Bone Tomahawk has become a beloved cult classic. It starts off as a typical Western, with a search party riding out into the frontier to find three missing townspeople, but it morphs into a gruesome horror film when they encounter a bloodthirsty tribe of cave-dwelling cannibals.
Bone Tomahawk marked the directorial debut of novelist S. Craig Zahler. Zahler has since gone on to direct similarly gruesome, violent thrillers like Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete, but hes never returned to the Western genre. So, Bone Tomahawk fans hoping to see another grisly, blood-drenched Western from Zahlers twisted mind have had no luck. But there is a Zahler-adjacent Western project...

Pure Fiction: The Black List Offers New Novelists A New Avenue To Publication, TV & Film Adaptations
Over three months before the 20th edition of The Black List hits inboxes all over town, the Franklin Leonard founded platform is broadening its horizon into novels.

Russell Crowe has repeatedly stated that neither Ridley Scott nor anyone involved with “Gladiator 2” reached out to him to consult on the upcoming sequel considering the follow-up’s storyline has little to do with the character he played in the 2000 original. Crowe won an Oscar for “Gladiator,” but his character, Maximus, died at the end of the movie. Scott recently told Empire magazine (via ScreenRant) that he hopes his relationship with Crowe is still in good shape after not reaching out about “Gladiator 2.”
“The plot, frankly, was right under our noses,” Scott said about the sequel. “I think it was so close under our noses that we thought it was too simple. I think [Russell Crowe] is still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do. As long as he doesn’t start bitching about how he wasn’t consulted.

Two years have gone by since a psychological thriller called Apartment 7A – which Relic (watch it Here) director Natalie Erika James helmed for Paramount Players and A Quiet Place collaborators Platinum Dunes and John Krasinski – wrapped filming. Soon after filming came to an end, rumors began to circulate that Apartment 7A was secretly a prequel to the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby… and sure enough, that’s exactly what the movie is.
