Jan Mojto’s Munich-based production-distribution company Beta Film has boarded Nordic suspense thriller “Helsinki Syndrome,” the first common project with Finland’s Fisher King since Beta took a majority stake in the leading Finnish production company in 2019.
Coinciding with the Fisher King deal, Beta launched the Sweden-based Beta Nordic Studios (Bns), a umbrella hub grouping its production interests in the Nordic region.
Bns aims to leverage Beta Film’s international expertise and distribution muscle to deliver high-end local content with global potential from its members.
Minimum guarantees that Beta Film puts up against future distribution revenues also allow producers to make series at the budgetary level of their artistic ambitions rather than that of local financing available, helping the shows to become standout titles from their territory.

Few titles which will have been presented at this Friday’s MipDrama look as ingenious in their invention as “Agatha Christie’s Hjerson.”
Anyone looking for a series of novels in the Poirot or Marple vein will look in vain. Sven Hjerson appears in multiple Christie works, but always via (often disparaging) comments made by his creator, fictional crime novelist Ariadne Oliver, a friend of Poirot’s whom Christie invented to let off steam about the travails of crime writing.
Despite being her most popular detective, Oliver would like to kill him off, she says. That’s because she’s made him a foreigner and receives letters from readers complaining about the inaccuracy of her descriptions of him: a fate suffered by Christie with Poirot.
Many decades later, Oliver must be rolling in her grave. Her master sleuth Sven Hjerson has now become the protagonist of an eight-part TV series...

Stockholm-based production company Dramacorp is developing Cold War mini-series “Whiskey On The Rocks,” based on a real-life diplomatic incident.
In 1981, a Soviet U-137 ‘Whiskey’-class submarine ran aground on rocks deep inside Swedish territorial waters — in the middle of a sensitive Swedish naval exercise. This breach of sovereignty led to a Cold War stand-off between Sweden and the U.S.S.R. that took 11 days of high-stakes negotiation to resolve.
Dramacorp is currently recruiting the creative team and finalizing a co-production model for the mini-series. A Scandinavian and international cast will play the drama’s protagonists onboard the submarine, in Moscow, Stockholm, and at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Dramacorp’s chief content officer Patrick Nebout and creative director Henrik Jansson-Schweizer will executive produce. Their credits include Svt Sweden’s family saga “Thicker Than Water,” Swedish-French thriller “Midnight Sun,” and the Oscar-nominated Swedish film “The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.

Originally slated for later this year on June 26, Warner Bros. delayed the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony winning musical to what was previously a date unknown. Now we know the new date is June 18, 2021, almost an entire year after its initially planned rollout.
The film, which is directed by Crazy Rich Asians’ John M. Chu—who previously cut his teeth on several of the flashier Step Up sequels—is highly anticipated by Broadway fans, and many who are not, because it’s based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical. Prior to becoming the zeitgeist-defining creator of Hamilton, Miranda wrote the music and lyrics to In the Heights,...

Audiences will have to wait until next summer to experience life in Washington Heights. “In the Heights,” Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical, will now hit theaters on June 18, 2021.
The movie was originally scheduled to debut this June, but was postponed as the coronavirus pandemic began to sweep the country, causing theaters to close and film production to shut down.
Post-production on “In the Heights” was affected since crew members have been forced to work remotely, in line with social-distancing measures. As a result, it wouldn’t have been completed in time for its initial release date, even if multiplexes were able to reopen by then.
“In the Heights” stars “Hamilton” alum Anthony Ramos and was directed by Jon M. Chu, of “Crazy Rich Asians” fame. It centers on Usnavi, a bodega owner in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.

The Pulitzer Prizes join a slew of other awards bodies that have now postponed their kudos thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully, this highly esteemed group isn’t going to wait too long before announcing their winners virtually.
According to an April 7 tweet (see it below), the Pulitzer Prizes for Journalism, Books, Drama, and Music will be delayed by two weeks. The winners will be announced via a livestream on pulitzer.org on Monday May 4th at 3:00pm. He was looking forward to performing those songs, along with his self-titled debut, which featured jazz standards and selections from musical theater, on his Stronger Magic Tour. It would be the continuation of a quick ascension that also found him acting in movies like Murder on the Orient Express and Harriet.

President Donald Trump’s European travel ban will be extended to the U.K. and Ireland at midnight on Monday — a move that will pose further challenges for the local film and TV industry, which is scrambling to draw up contingency plans across production and broadcasting.
Trump extended the ban Saturday following an emergency coronavirus meeting, a day after he admitted he would “likely” get tested for the virus, which he may have contracted from a Brazilian press aide who has tested positive.
The White House, which declared a national emergency Friday that could release up to $50 billion to fight the outbreak, had previously said Trump and vice-president Mike Pence would not be tested.
Trump’s 30-day European travel ban, which came into effect Friday, initially applied to 26 European countries, including France, Italy, Germany and Spain, but excluded countries outside the Schengen Zone, such as the U.K. and Ireland.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is doing his part to give theater fans something to smile about amid the coronavirus outbreak that has shut down Broadway.
On Thursday night, the Hamilton creator and three-time Tony winner dropped an unreleased song from the hit musical for his 3 million Twitter followers.
Miranda’s surprise release came hours after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in a press conference that all Broadway shows will be going dark until April 12, over the growing coronavirus concerns.
“Wish I could send you peace of mind via this app. Alas,” Miranda wrote, addressing the shutdown and growing anxiety around the pandemic.
