Subhash K Jha looks back at the Luv Ranjan directed Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, which starred Kartik Aaryan as it celebrates 7 years!
I have known Kartik Aaryan from the time he was seen for the first time in Pyaar Ka Punchnama. Director Luv Ranjan had arranged a screening of the film for me. We were all there to watch what Ranjan (I can’t bring myself to call him Luv) described as a sock-in-the-guts film.
“Sir, aapko bahot achcha lagega. Especially watch out for that boy Kartik Tiwari (I think that’s what Kartik was initially known as). He will surprise you.”
Luv Ranjan, I knew from the time he assisted Suneel Darshan. It’s hard to believe Ranjan comes from Suneel Darshan’s school of filmmaking. To call them poles apart would be an insult to the pole. Just as calling Kartik a revelation would be an understatement.

I had extensive experience on stage but the first time I was on a television set it frightened me to death and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get through that first line out of my mouth and I thought I was going to forget it,...

Now available for home viewing after making a big splash on the festival circuit, science fiction body horror tale Replace has a distinctive look that's hard to forget. In the first part of our interview with director Norbert Keil, we discussed ageing, memory loss and his work with Rebecca Forsythe, who plays troubled heroine Kira. In the second, I started by asking what inspired him to make the film look so different.
"I've always described it as a monochromatic Suspiria, he says. "Because Suspiria, much as I love it, I wouldn't do it today, because it offers three or four very strong colours in one frame and that gets a bit busy. I love it. I'm not criticising it at all - I wouldn't dare criticise it. But the way I wanted to make Replace, even back when we first started out, I said I wanted it.

A study in scarlet in Replace
It has made waves at horror festivals around the world this year, from Fantasia to Frightfest to Grimmfest, and now Norbert Keil's sumptuously sinister Replace is getting a DVD release. It's the story of Kira (played by Rebecca Forsythe), a young woman who panics when her skin begins to dry out and break, resorting to desperate measures to preserve her life and beauty. Veering off in unexpected directions, it emerges as a clever piece of near future science fiction, and it's also a film that overflows with striking imagery.
It all began, Norbert tells me, with his personal fear of ageing.
"I had a back operation a few years back and I was faced with my mind being healthy and wanting to move but my body just saying no, you can't and I won't do what you want me to do. That loss of control is one.

Grimmfest, Manchester’s Festival of Horror, Cult and Fantastic Film is back; bigger, bolder, and bloodier than ever before. As the Printworks once again find itself under siege by blood-soaked hordes of horror enthusiasts and film freaks, as Team Grimmfest unleashes…the Ninth Configuration! Grimmfest is proud to be presenting the world premiere of the remarkable and utterly unique Borley Rectory. Using an elaborate mixture of live action, stills, paintings, and model work, it’s an immersive, eerily atmospheric, and elegantly retro-styled exploration of the Most Haunted House in Britain. Anyone who has ever taken it upon themselves to brave Montreal`s Fantasia film festival leaves with some scars. These scars can be subconscious, from the reptilian awakening that comes with sitting in a dark room occupied by porous, spongy, filmy humanoids. These scars can also be cerebral ones, the result of being subjected to a mind-numbing onslaught of light and sound. They can be existential as well, left from a shattered mind, fractured by having to chose between two films screening at the same time, like a parent having to chose between two drowning children. Or maybe the scars are literal ones, from sores left open by slow, methodical shifting on theatre seat cushions.
In the fifteen years and counting since I`ve been covering this festival, my scars have included any combination of the above. This year however, I found a new source of injury. While I had...

Dead Shack
This is a decent zombie horror-comedy from multitalented director Peter Ricq. While on vacation, three kids discover a nearby neighbor is harboring her undead family who need to be fed, and they have to save their unsuspecting parental guardians. It’s kind of a tourist trap led up by Lauren Holly as the neighbor. There’s some good humor from the father Roger (Donavon Stinson) who’s got good timing even if those around him don’t. He was the highlight for me, while the kids were all decent as well.
This is a fun little zombie flick, offering up cute comedy and decent gore effects, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The biggest problem for me was a tonal shift; what’s relatively lighthearted for 90% of the movie is heavily marred by a shockingly grim finale. Worth a look for fans of the genre,...

Confined to an asylum for the criminally insane for the past four years, Nica Pierce is erroneously convinced that she, not Chucky, murdered her entire family. But when her psychiatrist introduces a new therapeutic “tool” to facilitate his patients’ group sessions – an all-too-familiar “Good Guy” doll – a string of grisly deaths begins to plague the asylum, and Nica starts to wonder if maybe she isn’t crazy after all.

Back in June, the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival took over Southern California, hosting screenings at numerous locations and featuring numerous genre films that horror and sci-fi fans should definitely keep on their radars in the coming months. Here are my thoughts on three of the movies that I had the opportunity to watch at the festival:
Replace: As far genre feature film debuts go, co-writer/director Norbert Keil has a lot to be proud of with Replace, a stunning and beautifully executed cinematic mystery that’s part body horror/part psychological thriller. Something of a hallucinatory fever dream at times, Keil has crafted an intriguing and chilling portrait of just how far some folks are willing to go in the name of vanity, and the whole affair is anchored by a trio of powerhouse performances by Rebecca Forsythe, Barbara Crampton, and Lucie Aron.

It should come as no surprise that the concept behind Replace is rather brilliant; it does come from the brain of master Richard Stanley. The movie stars Rebecca Forsythe as Kira, a musician whose skin begins to age abnormally quickly beginning with her finger and quickly spreading through the rest of her body. At the same time, she also begins to lose a grip on her memory.
Through a rather ridiculous set of circumstances, Kira discovers that her body will accept new skin to replace her aging one and so she turns into a killer, skinning her victims to replace her skin with theirs.
Neat-o right?

Following in the footsteps of the likes of David Cronenberg, German filmmaker Norbert Keil unleashes his own brand of body-horror on unsuspecting audiences with Replace – a Bathoryesque tale of a beautiful young woman, Kira, who is afflicted with a disease that rapidly ages her skin. After seeking the advice of a dermatologist she discovers she can replace her skin with that of other girls, so of course she abducts and kills a potential donor. But when the disease returns, she is forced to find more victims and soon becomes the target of a police investigation.

There’s a captivating science fiction horror concept at the back of director Norbert Keil and co-writer Richard Stanley’s Replace with the question: how far would you be willing to go for your youth? Do you crave longevity? Vanity? Rebirth? What would you sacrifice for it? Memory? Sanity? Life itself as the past becomes a voluntary casualty of the future? This stuff is ripe for body horror grotesquery, philosophical query, and hubristic intent. And in some respects Keil and Stanley’s film touches upon each one of those promises too. Where it stumbles is execution. Rather than let us indulge in that potential from the start, the movie seeks to keep us in the dark. It’s a choice meant for suspense, but reality has it cultivating a waning interest instead.

UK sales outfit Jinga Films has boarded Brandon Christensen’s debut supernatural horror Still/Born for international sales with ICM Partners representing North America.
Following its Us premiere at Overlook Film Festival the film won the event’s Scariest Film Award.
Produced and co-written by Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters 1 & 2) and starring Christie Burke (Twilight: Breaking Dawn), Jesse Moss (Tucker And Dale Vs Evil), Rebecca Olson (Kindergarten Cop 2) and Michael Ironside (Starship Troopers), the film follows a young mother who after losing one of her twins during childbirth, spirals into madness thinking that her other child is in danger from an evil entity.
