As HBO continues to round out the main cast of its upcoming Harry Potter series, Nick Frost looks set to play one of the incredibly popular saga's most beloved characters.

According to Deadline, the Shawn of the Dead star is close to finalizing a deal to play Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts' half-giant groundskeeper who was previously brought to life by the late Robbie Coltrane in Warner Bros.' eight Harry Potter movies.

Frost has appeared in a number of projects with Shawn co-star and writer Simon Pegg, as well as the likes of Attack the Block, Fighting With My Family, and Get Away. More recently, he provided the voice of droid Sm-33 in Disney+ Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew.

Ted Lasso and Thor: Love and Thunder actor Brett Goldstein was rumored to be up for the role of Hagrid.

Good news today for Avatar: The Last Airbender fans as we’ve just got word that the cast and crew will have a two-month break over Spring before diving back into filming over the summer for what will be the third and final season of the live-action adaptation.

Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been in production since October 2024 and is scheduled to wrap on March 21st, 2025, meaning that at the time of writing, the series is entering its final stages of production. Jabbar Raisani has returned to direct for season 2, along with Anu Menon, Amit Gupta (His Dark Materials), and, as just recently confirmed, Hiromi Kamata.

New production dates (courtesy of ProductionWeekly) suggest that the series will take a two-month break before diving back in on May 26th, with a scheduled wrap planned for August 1st, 2025. This wrap date seems really early, though, so...

BBC Studios and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) have renewed their content alliance with a comprehensive multi-year deal spanning drama, comedy, kids programming and entertainment fare. The agreement brings fresh installments of Alan Carr’s autobiographical comedy “Changing Ends” (Seasons 3-4) and standup favorite “Live At the Apollo” to ABC platforms. The pubcaster has also secured first-run rights to children’s series including preschool hit “Hey Duggee,” “Andy’s Global Adventures” with Andy Day, “Supertato,” “Deadly 60” and “Horrible Histories.”

Continuing the partnership’s second-run arrangements, ABC viewers retain access to audience favorites like “Death in Paradise,” its spinoff “Beyond Paradise,” period drama “Call The Midwife,” crime procedural “Silent Witness,” cozy mystery “Father Brown,” factual stalwart “Antiques Roadshow” and dark comedy “The Cleaner.”

Following recent reports claiming that both Mark Strong and Mark Rylance could be in contention to play Albus Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter series, we're now hearing that John Lithgow is officially in talks for the role.

Lithgow has appeared in a multitude of film and TV projects over the years, including Dexter, Footloose, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Interstellar. More recently, he played key roles in Conclave and FX's prematurely cancelled The Old Man.

Dumbledore was previously played by late Irish acting legends Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, with Jude Law portraying a younger take on the character in the Fantastic Beasts movies.

HBO’s series adaptation of “Harry Potter” may have found its Dumbledore. John Lithgow is close to closing a deal to portray the iconic character, according to multiple media reports.

The series is expected to begin filming this summer in Leavesden. Previously, all eight of the Warner Bros. “Harry Potter” movies were filmed in the English commercial area.

“We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals,” HBO said in a statement to TheWrap.

The headmaster of Hogwarts was previously portrayed by Richard Harris in the film adaptations of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Michael Gambon then took over the role in the six other “Harry Potter” films, and Jude Law portrayed the character in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

Cillian Murphy has been a fan-favorite pick to play the villainous Voldemort in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series since we first got word on the project, and we're now hearing that the Oppenheimer star could be in line for a different role - though this character is very closely connected to He Who Must not be Named!

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the Academy Award-winner is being "eyed to play Professor Quirinus Quirrell in the Harry Potter show."

Quirrell was a half-blood wizard who became the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor during the 1991–1992 school year. It was later revealed that he was actually a servant of Voldemort, who had taken over his body by transforming him into a temporary Horcrux.

Exclusive: Morfydd Clark (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) and Ariyon Bakare (His Dark Materials) are set to lead UFO thriller Arctic Skies, which Independent Entertainment will launch for sales at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

The sci-fi project, inspired by one of the most well-documented UFO encounters on record, follows the harrowing journey of a cargo plane crew who, while flying at 40,000 feet above the Arctic Circle, become the target of otherworldly attention.

Pic will be shot at Steven Knight’s Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, UK, which has recently hosted Knight’s Peaky Blinders movie for Netflix.

Writer-directors are Birmingham duo Elliot and Zander Weaver of Elliander Pictures, which is producing with Lowkey Films. Independent Entertainment are aboard as executive producers. Jamie Gamache and Connor O’Hara produce for Lowkey. Colin M. McKeown also produces.

David Tennant, Robert Carlyle and Toby Jones will lead a new ITV Studios-commissioned series about the U.K.’s phone-hacking scandal, The Hack.

Written by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, His Dark Materials), the seven-part drama is produced by the team from Mr Bates vs The Post Office — a show that set Britain alight with its exposure of gross maltreatment and a miscarriage of justice when hundreds of subpostmasters were wrongly accused of theft and fraud due to a faulty computer system (the show’s impact led the U.K. government to announce new legislation to exonerate the wrongly convicted subpostmasters).

Set between 2002 and 2012, The Hack interweaves two real-life stories, including the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies (Tennant), who uncovered evidence of phone-hacking at the Rupert Murdoch-owned publisher News Group Newspaper, specifically the News of the World tabloid.

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. In fact, when producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed that filming on 28 Years Later had wrapped back in August, he followed that up by saying that they were about to start working on the second chapter in this trilogy. After the internet went wild speculating that the zombie featured in the excellent 28 Years Later trailer was a zombified Jim, the character played by Cillian Murphy in 2002’s 28 Days Later, Empire Magazine has confirmed that the actor won’t appear at all in the upcoming first entry in the planned trilogy.

Director Danny Boyle reteams with writer Alex Garland on 28 Years Later, with Murphy serving as executive producer, which has only fueled the expectation that Jim would return.

Producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire of Murphy’s hopeful return, “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved, and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

Dynasty Details

The trailer for “The Roshans,” a Netflix documentary series chronicling three generations of the Bollywood dynasty, has been released. The project, directed by Shashi Ranjan and produced with Rakesh Roshan, explores the family’s influence on Indian cinema since the 1950s.

The documentary traces the family’s journey from composer patriarch Roshan Lal Nagrath (known professionally as Roshan), through his sons, actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan (the “Krrish” franchise) and composer Rajesh Roshan (“Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai”), and grandson, Bollywood megastar Hrithik Roshan (“War”), examining their collective impact on Indian film through music, directing and acting.

“Doctor Who” producer Bad Wolf has increased its profits by 49% despite a drop in revenue year-on-year.

Post-tax profits rose from £7,072,610 ($8.9 million) in 2023 to £10,554,620 ($13.2 million) in 2024, latest records show. Gross profits climbed from £11 million last year to £15 million this year.

This is despite revenue dropping from £117 million in 2023 to £94 million in 2024.

The accounts, filed last week at U.K. business registrar Companies House, cover the 12-month period ending March 31, 2024.

The filings also show that the value of projects Bad Wolf have that are classed as “in production” have fallen substantially, from £96 million last year to £72 million this year. Among the shows the company have in the pipeline is “The Other Bennet Sister,” a spin-off of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.”

That downward trend, which is being felt in the U.K. production industry at large, is also reflected in the company’s revenues by market. The company’s U.K.

A drama series based around its legendary manager Bill Shankly is in the works. The club, however, won’t walk alone into the project after teaming up with A24 for the project.

It's safe to say that fans might be surprised by some of the actors that are reportedly being eyed for certain roles!

Though "no formal offers" have been made, Dune: Prophecy star Mark Strong is said to be in contention to play Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore (along with the previously-reported Mark Rylance), with Bad Sisters co-creator/star Sharon Horgan and Constantine and The Mummy alum Rachel Weisz eyed for Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall.

McAvoy, with his impeccable ability to play characters with a lot of shades of gray (both literally and figuratively), once had the chance to don the robes of one of the most infamous villains in literary history. But he turned it down. Yes, the man who’s fought mutants, navigated a fractured mind, and faced ancient gods, said ‘no’ to step into the shoes of the most infamous dark wizard ever.

The runtime for season 1 of HBO's Harry Potter series has been confirmed. Francesca Gardiner, whose previous work includes Succession, Killing Eve, and His Dark Materials, is the showrunner for the series, while Game of Thrones and The Menu's Mark Mylod is an executive producer and director. HBO's Harry Potter has been touted as a faithful adaptation of the seven Harry Potter books, with filming set to commence during the summer of 2025.

As per the official Harry Potter website, Gardiner and Mylod shared that "We have 8 hours to tell the first book, so we can dig into the real depths and crevices and how the language of magic can evolve." With many HBO series having hour-long episodes, this means that Harry Potter season 1 will likely consist of eight episodes. Previous comments and the revealed filming window have indicated that the series is expected to debut in late 2026 or in 2027.

THR is reporting that British actor Paapa Essiedu is now in talks to play Hogwarts' cunning potions master, Professor Severus Snape, in the upcoming Harry Potter series. Essiedu is said to have been offered the part, but it's not clear if negotiations have begun in earnest.

Essiedu has appeared in the likes of Black Mirror, Gangs of London, The Lazarus Project, and I May Destroy You, as well as movies such as Men, The Outrun, and Femme.

This take on Snape is described as the "wickedly smart and casually cruel Hogwarts potions master who comes across as the story’s primary antagonist in the show’s first season." The character was previously played by the late Alan Rickman in Warner Bros.' eight Harry Potter movies.
