Netflix is expanding its reality library with a sweet new addition. The streamer is moving forward with “The Golden Ticket,” an upcoming competition series that will be set in the world of Willy Wonka.
The series comes from Eureka Productions, which also produced “The Mole,” “Dating Around” and “TwentySomethings Austin.” Fittingly, contestants who find a golden ticket will have the chance to enter Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. But once the gates open, they’re not getting a tour. Instead, contestants will be asked to strategize and withstand a series of challenges unique to this wild environment The series promises to test contestants both mentally and physically and is being described in a press release as a “high-stakes social experiment.”
At the moment, it’s unclear how contestants will be able to obtain their golden tickets, though casting is now open. Both the series’ filming location and its premiere date will...

Streaming service Hulu is continuing its expansion into original comedy programming with the announcement of a new comedy special from up-and-coming comedian Chris Distefano. Titled “It’s Just Unfortunate,” the one-hour special was executive produced by late night host Jimmy Kimmel. Distefano joins several other prominent comedians who have recently brought their stand-up acts to Hulu, such as Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, and Jessica Kirson.
The new special marks Hulu’s latest effort to compete more directly with Netflix in the market for streaming comedy specials. Netflix has long led the way producing and distributing original comedy performances. However, Hulu has been steadily building up its own catalog through deals with comedians, producers, and comedy clubs. Distefano previously released his special “Speshy Weshy” on Netflix in 2022.
Distefano has worked as a comedian for over a decade, gaining experience on MTV shows and developing a large fanbase in New York City.

Hulu is continuing to double down on stand-up specials.
The streamer will air Chris Distefano’s third stand-up special as it ramps up its moves into comedy.
Distefano’s hour-long special – It’s Just Unfortunate – is exec produced by Jimmy Kimmel.
He joins the likes of Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, Ilana Glazer, Roy Wood Jr., Atsuko Okatsuka and Jessica Kirson, who are bringing their stand-up specials to the Disney-backed streamer as it looks to take on the likes of Netflix by aggressively moving into the genre.
Hulu has also licensed a number of specials from the likes of 800 Pound Gorilla, Comedy Dynamics, and Don’t Tell Comedy.
Last year, Distefano sold out Radio City Music Hall and the Theater at Madison Square Garden. He started his career on MTV’s Guy Code and Girl Code before starring in IFC’s Benders, co-hosting Netflix’s Ultimate Beastmaster and hosting Vice TV’s Super Maximum Retro Show.

Chris Distefano is bringing his comedy to Hulu.
His latest hour, which is being executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, arrives as the streaming service makes an aggressive push into the stand-up arena, elbowing its way into an increasingly frothy market that’s been dominated by Netflix in recent years. It’s Just Unfortunate, as Distefano’s new special is titled, is his third, following previous hours Size 38 Waist and Speshy Weshy at Comedy Central and Netflix, respectively.
The Hulu stand-up initiative, which it’s dubbed “Hularious,” is set to kick off in earnest in November with a special from comedy vet Jim Gaffigan. From there, it will look to distinguish itself from rivals by dropping a new hour each month. “The mantra is very much quality over quantity,” Hulu’s head of scripted content Jordan Helman told THR of the platform’s curated approach. Amateur sports competition shows are part intense athletics and part corny game show but usually tremendously entertaining. The Titan Games, The Challenge, Ultimate Beastmaster and American Ninja Warrior, all featuring challenging obstacle courses, have proved to be popular, particularly during the pandemic, when sports were on hold. But are these shows good for women? Do they exalt their athletic prowess, redefining popular notions of women’s capabilities, or do they perpetuate condescending stereotypes, giving women a demeaning pat on the head and plastic participation trophy?

Live Pd producer Big Fish Entertainment is preparing to do battle in the competition arena with a number of projects including a sports combat series with Sylvester Stallone. This comes ahead of the launch of A&e series America’s Top Dog and as the “controlled chaos” of its biggest franchise Live Pd returns for a fourth season.
Big Fish founder and president Dan Cesareo outlined the company’s plans in an interview with Deadline and discussed its ongoing strategy for the smash hit A&e police format, new Cmt series Sweet Jesus and its long-running Black Ink Crew franchise.
Cesareo recently brought a project to market featuring Rambo star Stallone, who also previously fronted Netflix’s first major move into the non-scripted genre with Ultimate Beastmaster. We’re working with Sylvester Stallone and we’re shopping that [project] right now. It is in the sports combat space and it’s getting a response from buyers.

A multifaceted and tenacious talent 20 years into his screen career, Terry Crews has always defied the efforts of others to put him in a certain box. A former NFL player who moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to pursue acting, Crews built a career with a specific mission in mind. “I wanted people to see me, and see what was possible,” the actor says. “I’m telling you man, it took a long time to get here. I’m 50 years old, and now I’ve actually changed the way people could see people like me.”
When Crews came to Hollywood, he knew he looked like no one he’d seen on screen. And as a tall, muscular and athletic individual, typecasting was a force with which to contend. “It’s one of those things where everyone tells you the right way to go. So many people tried to put me into action movies.

Terry Crews is anything but predictable. Whether he’s bouncing between disparate roles in “The Newsroom” and “Arrested Development” or inviting you to interview him from the “America’s Got Talent” makeup room while he’s getting his head shaved, the former NFL linebacker turned SAG Award-nominated actor is always, always, always pushing himself to try something new.
“I have a rule: I only do what I love,” Crews told IndieWire. “I’ve turned down crazy money for commercials and things that I don’t want to represent. It’s just I only do what I like, and that’s it.”
Knowing the entertainment industry is a fickle business, Crews has spread the love around, from action franchises, long-running TV series, weird indies, memorable commercials, his own video game, and much, much more. But his latest passion lies in yet another unexpected space: How did Terry Crews go from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine...

The big money going into drama means scripted grabs all the headlines in TV these days, but under the radar there’s a surprising amount of innovation going on within unscripted entertainment, too.
At first glance, it seems like little has changed in that genre, as the list of top formats is familiar. Franchises such as “Dancing With the Stars,” “Survivor,” “American Idol” and “Got Talent” still draw in millions of live viewers around the world, despite each being well over a decade old. In the U.K., the latest installment of the country’s most-popular format, “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” was its most-watched ever — in its 18th season — and will debut in France later this year.
For many broadcasters, these tentpole shows remain reassuringly popular at a time when their business is being disrupted by the streamers. “The big brands are still attracting big audiences,...

Netflix is remaking British reality hit The Circle in three international markets including the U.S., marking one of its biggest non-scripted entertainment bets since Ultimate Beastmaster.
The Svod platform has struck a major deal for the series, which is essentially Big Brother-meets-Catfish for a social media-obsessed audience, with All3Media’s Studio Lambert, producer of Undercover Boss and Gogglebox.
The announcement comes as the show finishes its debut season on Channel 4 in the UK this evening.
Created by Studio Lambert Creative Director Tim Harcourt, Netflix will remake the show initially in the U.S. with two other international adaptations to follow, a similar model to the obstacle course competition.
The Circle features a range of individuals from all walks of life competing in a popularity contest to win a prize of around £50,000. They will all live in one modern block but separately in individual apartments, interacting with...

In case there’s any confusion over the matter, Danny Masterson is in every episode of “The Ranch” Season 4. Despite a highly-publicized controversy that ended in the series regular being fired from Netflix’s Emmy-winning sitcom, that decision took place after filming had been completed on “Part 4.” The new episodes that were released Friday, December 15 are just like the first three seasons: Masterson, as the older brother, Jameson “Rooster” Bennett, is heavily integrated into every half-hour installment.
So fans have a choice to make: Watch “The Ranch” and try to overcome the building rage of watching an alleged rapist goof around or skip 10 episodes and pick the show back up once Masterson is gone for real.

If you haven’t watched Netflix’s “A Christmas Prince” yet, then you’re missing out. It’s not that the movie is really all that good. It’s Ok, but we’ll get back to that in a second. What matters is that this fairy tale rom-com has helped Netflix begin its mission: to steal Christmas from cable networks.
While networks like Lifetime, Freeform, Up, and Ion have been cranking out some holiday rom-coms and programming, Hallmark is the undisputed leader of Christmas fare. The channel began its new original Christmas movies back in October, ruled over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, and is still making a splash with yuletide movies like “The Christmas Train” and “Switched for Christmas.”

When “The X-Files” returned to Fox in January 2016 after lying dormant for years, no one was really quite sure what to expect. After all, sometimes when a beloved franchise dusts itself off for a new run of episodes, it works. But sometimes, the end result is best described as, well, dusty — which was the case with Season 10 (or, if you like, a special Fox “event series”), a mixed bag of episodes which reunited stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny with creator Chris Carter, but at best was clumsy and at worst a pale echo of the once-great drama.
In reviewing the Season 10 cliffhanger finale, “My Struggle II,” IndieWire noted that if the show had ended there forever, it would have been a real tragedy for the show’s legacy. However, the season overall was enough of a disappointment to leave us nervous about what would happen when Fox (inevitably) greenlit a follow-up season.

One of the thrills of watching sports, either in person or on TV, is recognizing that everyone taking part is capable of things that you fundamentally are not. Sometimes it’s throwing a baseball at speeds that would get you booked for reckless driving. Other times, it’s running so fast that you can pose for a picture while beating all of your peers. In Season 2 of the Netflix series “Ultimate Beastmaster,” one of those feats is leaping between giant treadmills suspended ten feet in the air.In that way, “Ultimate Beastmaster” is crafted as unabashed TV comfort food. Following in the well-established vein of other televised obstacle course spectacles, it’s similar enough to “American Ninja Warrior” (even using the same director, Patrick McManus) that anyone stumbling across it on Netflix would be forgiven if they thought that this might be the same show that’s been a staple...

“Gunpowder” invites a lot of comparisons to “Game of Thrones.” Much of the three-hour series is spent watching Kit Harington swing his sword around, sport period garb while walking through castles, deliver stirring motivational speeches, and recruit an army to defend his fellow men from persecution. Future generations can look at .gifs of a grimacing Harington and guess, “‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘Gunpowder’?”
As fun as that sounds, the limited series deserves slightly more respect than such frivolity implies. It’s an earnestly made, well-told, true story about a group of 17th century Catholics who rebelled against a Protestant king that saw their faith as a threat and wanted them eliminated. Dragons do not belong here, nor should one wish for them to fly in and set the world ablaze.
But while “Gunpowder” tells its story clearly and respectably — previously unaware British viewers will see Guy Fawkes Day differently — its...

People can exclusively reveal the new teaser for Netflix’s first competition series that will be released in six different versions streaming worldwide on Friday.
In the clip, Sylvester Stallone, who is executive producing the new series, reveals just how tough this extreme obstacle course will be for the 108 global competitors.

Following the brief teaser trailer released last month, Netflix has now unleashed a full trailer for their upcoming comedy Sandy Wexler, starring Adam Sandler as the title character. This comedy marks the third movie in his four-picture deal with the streaming service, which has already yielded the 2015 Western The Ridiculous Six and last year's The Do-Over. While the comedy superstar reunites with several of his frequent collaborators, this movie shows Adam Sandler sharing the spotlight with Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson.
Sandy Wexler (Adam Sandler) is a talent manager working in Los Angeles in the 1990s, diligently representing a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business. His single minded devotion is put to the test when he falls in love with his newest client, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), a tremendously talented singer who he discovers at an amusement park. Over the course of a decade, the two of...

When I first saw that Sylvester Stallone was executive producing a new Netflix series called Ultimate Beastmaster, I thought it made perfect sense that a tough guy like him would put his weight behind a new version of the 1982 fantasy adventure film The Beastmaster, which was later adapted into a television series that ran […]

Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin court disgrace (and each other) in the first trailer for Roger Michell’s “My Cousin Rachel,” an adaptation of the 1951 novel by Daphne du Maurier, most famous for penning “Rebecca” and “The Birds.” A lesser known work, the last time “My Cousin Rachel” made it to the big screen was in 1952, starring Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton.
The novel centers around a young man named Philip (Claflin) as he plots against his mysterious and beautiful cousin, Rachel Ashley (Weisz), whom he suspects of poisoning his guardian. Philip falls under the beautiful Rachel’s spell, losing his resolve as his infatuation grows — and maybe even endangering his own life in the process.

Streaming platforms like Netflix have allowed documentary films and series to reach a far wider audience than ever before. But what does it mean for documentary filmmakers when those platforms demand content be shot in 4K and on specific cameras?
These are the exact circumstances cinematographers Ben Bloodwell and Bryan Donnell faced when they were hired to shoot the new Netflix series, “Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On,” an episode of which will premiere this week at the Sundance Film Festival.
How does 4K change the workflow, budget and aesthetic approach documentary filmmakers take in shooting nonfiction? That’s the discussion IndieWire will have with the two DPs when they stop by the Canon Creative Studio on Main Street in Park City.
Also joining the discussion is Dp Alan Jacobsen, who shot “Strong Island,” a documentary that will be looking for distribution after it premieres in competition at Sundance on Tuesday.

Despite its title, Netflix’s “Ultimate Beastmaster” unfortunately has nothing to do with animals, whether real or mythic. It instead offers a streaming alternative to the likes of “American Ninja Warrior” (itself a spinoff of Japan’s “Sasuke”), with the added bonus of being executive produced by Sylvester Stallone. Watch the trailer below.

Since the only way to distinguish oneself in the crowded world of obstacle-course competitions is to make said course bigger and more beastlike, Netflix has endeavored to do just that. The Beast is perhaps the most ominous sports-entertainment structure this side of Hell in a Cell, and at one point co-host Terry Crews (flanked by Charissa Thompson) assures us that no one has ever made it past level two.
