Death in anime is never a guarantee. In fact, some anime like to double-down on the lack of meaningful consequences and stakes by repeatedly bringing characters back from the afterlife. Worse, characters escape certain death and make death feel like a fad rather than a meaningful story beat. Not all anime have this problem, but those that do will often cheapen character sacrifice and ruin the stakes.

Anime that rely on cheap death only to subvert expectations by bringing characters back risk ruining the story's believability. What's the point of narrative stakes and audience investment if a character's death is meaningless in a literal sense? If a character can just spring back to life, that will ultimately harm the overall cohesion of the narrative and cheapen the experience. Surprisingly, many popular anime share this problem in droves.

Goth, known in part for starring in Ti West's X trilogy, is taking on her biggest film project to date with the role. Currently, no character details have been revealed about who Goth or any of her co-stars will be playing, but it's known that the movie is inspired by the ancient Greek story written by Homer, which follows Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War. The film is hitting theaters next July.

Jessica Gunning, the standout star from 2024’s Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer,has been cast in another dark comedic role, per Deadline. The Emmy and Golden Globe winner will join Sir Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings), Michaela Coel (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and James Corden (Cats) in the dark comedy, The Christophersfrom Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh.

The Christophers will begin production later this month in London. Benmont Tench, keyboardist for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, has announced The Melancholy Season, his first new solo album in over a decade. Along with the announcement, he has unveiled the title track and 2025 tour dates.

Produced by Jonathan Wilson, The Melancholy Season will arrive on March 7th via Dark Horse Records. It features 13 songs with contributions from Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, Nickel Creek’s Sara Watkins, and singer-songwriter Jenny O. It will be his first full-length release since his 2014 solo debut, You Should Be So Lucky. Pre-orders are ongoing.

This is appalling. Director Zach Lipovsky, writer Harris Wilkinson, and WWE Studios were given the chance to make a new Leprechaun movie, they cast a professional wrestler (Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl) as the title character, and then they just churned out a dull monster movie. I don’t know how anyone involved thought this was a good idea (“You know what we should do? Take everything people liked about Leprechaun and remove it!”) or how Leprechaun: Origins made it through production.

The new Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx-led Netflix action-comedy movie Back In Action has critics and viewers divided, evident in the film's Rotten Tomatoes score. While Back In Action, which hit Netflix on Friday, has a 23% critics score, the movie fared better with viewers, clocking a 63% rating.

Directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), Back In Action follows former CIA agents Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz) as they are pulled back into international intrigue when their identities are revealed. The pair were enjoying family life — they have a teenage daughter, Alice (McKenna Roberts), and compounding the crisis is the soon-to-be husband and wife duo who are expecting another child.

The overdone premise of characters returning to a life they no longer want (insert Godfather III quote here) is likely a big reason for the unfavorable 23% “Tomatometer” score. "Mostly, the familiarity takes its toll," The New York Times' Ben Kenigsberg wrote.

After a decade away from show business, Cameron Diaz returned to acting by joining Jamie Foxx in the new Netflix movie Back in Action. The critics were not impressed with the film, but audiences do not agree, seeing very different scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

Currently, Back in Action is holding a rotten approval rating from critics of 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the audience score is almost three times higher, sitting at a fresh rating of 63%. This would mark another case where the critics and audiences disagree on the quality of a film to a big degree, and it perhaps gives the Back in Action team some vindication after initially stumbling with a low debut score from critics right out of the gate.
