Jaume Collet-Serra may not regularly come to mind when one thinks of modern A-list directors, but the man's name probably deserves more respect. From turning mid-budget Liam Neeson thrillers like "The Commuter" into solid hits to directing massive-scale franchise plays like Disney's "Jungle Cruise," the man has done it all, and often does it well. Collet-Serra cut his teeth in the horror genre, a genre he hasn't worked in for quite some time -- but he's back.

At long last, Collet-Serra has made his welcome return to horror with Blumhouse's upcoming "The Woman in the Yard." I had the good fortune of visiting the set of the film last year, with the production taking place just outside of Athens, Georgia at Athena Studios, a little over an hour outside of Atlanta. Collet-Serra, who previously directed 2005's "House of Wax" remake and the fan-favorite "Orphan," appeared to be in his element.

As far as modern horror goes, there are few (if any) names that rival Blumhouse. As the studio behind Jordan Peele's modern masterpiece "Get Out," "The Purge" franchise, one of M. Night Shyamalan's biggest movies ever in "Split," successful franchise revivals such as the "Halloween" trilogy, and monster adaptations like "Five Nights at Freddy's," the house that Jason Blum built has become a go-to name for horror fans. Now the studio is seeking to deliver another original hit in the form of "The Woman in the Yard."

As Blumhouse grew in recent years, they hit a bit of a cold streak, with recent films such as "The Exorcist: Believer," "Imaginary," "Afraid," and others failing to deliver critically and commercially. Long is next up portraying Katherine Jackson, matriarch to the Jackson musical family, in Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael. The movie, directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by John Logan and starring Jaafar Jackson and Colman Domingo comes out October 3.

Iconic indie producer Christine Vachon is getting her due from the 2025 Austin Film Festival. IndieWire can exclusively announce that Vachon will be feted with the acclaimed Polly Platt Award for Producing at this year’s Aff Writers Conference, which will take place from October 23 to 26. “Dear White People” showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser will also be honored with the Outstanding Television Writer Award during the annual conference.

Vachon is an Independent Spirit Award and Gotham Award winner who co-founded powerhouse Killer Films with partner Pamela Koffler in 1995. Across 30 years, the duo’s banner has produced more than 100 acclaimed films, including “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” “Far from Heaven,” “Still Alice,” “Past Lives” (which landed Vachon her first Oscar nomination in the Best Picture category), and “Carol.”

Vachon launched her career at Sundance in 1991 with her first feature film, which was “Carol” auteur Todd Haynes’ Grand Jury Prize-winning “Poison.

Continuing the recent trend of awards shows becoming political again amid Donald Trump’s second term, the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards featured a number of political comments from winners on Saturday.

Arguably the most pointed remarks aimed at the current administration, which, among other things, has tried to roll back federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, came from writer-director Justin Simien.

Seemingly surprised to have won for his nonscripted series Hollywood Black, Simien used his time onstage to address what he sees as a “white nationalist coup taking over this country.”

And he suggested that Hollywood Black, an MGM+ docuseries that chronicles Black people’s experience in the entertainment industry, might be part of how to fight back.

“If you’re serious about stopping the white nationalist coup taking over this country, how about amplifying Black history,” he said. “Because Black people, we’ve been in a fascist country this whole time.

The upcoming HBO limited series “Dtf St. Louis” has added both Chris Perfetti and Joy Sunday to its cast, Variety has learned.

Perfetti and Sunday join previously announced cast members Jason Bateman, David Harbour, Linda Cardellini, and Richard Jenkins. The show was picked up for seven episodes at HBO back in November and is now in pre-production.

The official logline for the show states, “A limited series about a love triangle between three adults experiencing middle-age malaise, that leads to one of them ending up dead.”

Perfetti will appear in the role of Tiger Tiger, while Sunday will play Jodie. Further character details are being kept under wraps.

Actor DeRon Horton from Dear White People and The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey posted on Instagram that he survived a shooting shortly before Christmas. He told his followers about his experience and recovery, thanking people who supported him during this difficult time.

Someone shot at Horton’s car, and a bullet broke his arm. The actor kept a positive outlook after the severe injury. “Getting shot a few days before Xmas definitely wasn’t on my wish list,” Horton wrote, showing photos of his time in the hospital, his arm injury, and X-rays after surgery.

The 32-year-old actor took to Instagram on Thursday to post harrowing details of the incident along with graphic photos of his injury from the hospital, including the gunshot wound, his bloodied arm, a long incision and series of stitches on his forearm. Fans of Pretty Little Liars will no doubt be thrilled to see Tammin Sursok and Brant Daugherty reuniting in a new Hallmark movie.

Airing as part of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas programming event, the new movie, Trivia at St. Nick’s stars two Pretty Little Liars stars. In that show, Tamil Sursok played Jenna Marshall, while Brant Daugherty played Noel Kahn.

Justin Simien hopes his new historical documentary series “Hollywood Black” will build confidence in upcoming Black filmmakers to pursue their independent projects, even if they don’t have all the resources in the beginning. The writer-director is also hopeful that the doc will help combat competitiveness among higher profile Black creatives in the industry.

“All you got to do is go after it, even if you don’t have all the answers,” Simien told TheWrap. “I’m hoping that this documentary inspires people to have the nerve to just take the shot and to be Ok with not having the connections or the financing or whatever. Just go, just get it made.”
