Jaume Collet-Serra may not regularly come to mind when one thinks of modern A-list directors, but the man's name probably deserves more respect. From turning mid-budget Liam Neeson thrillers like "The Commuter" into solid hits to directing massive-scale franchise plays like Disney's "Jungle Cruise," the man has done it all, and often does it well. Collet-Serra cut his teeth in the horror genre, a genre he hasn't worked in for quite some time -- but he's back.
At long last, Collet-Serra has made his welcome return to horror with Blumhouse's upcoming "The Woman in the Yard." I had the good fortune of visiting the set of the film last year, with the production taking place just outside of Athens, Georgia at Athena Studios, a little over an hour outside of Atlanta. Collet-Serra, who previously directed 2005's "House of Wax" remake and the fan-favorite "Orphan," appeared to be in his element.

As far as modern horror goes, there are few (if any) names that rival Blumhouse. As the studio behind Jordan Peele's modern masterpiece "Get Out," "The Purge" franchise, one of M. Night Shyamalan's biggest movies ever in "Split," successful franchise revivals such as the "Halloween" trilogy, and monster adaptations like "Five Nights at Freddy's," the house that Jason Blum built has become a go-to name for horror fans. Now the studio is seeking to deliver another original hit in the form of "The Woman in the Yard."
As Blumhouse grew in recent years, they hit a bit of a cold streak, with recent films such as "The Exorcist: Believer," "Imaginary," "Afraid," and others failing to deliver critically and commercially. The studio's latest effort, which hails from director Jaume Collet-Serra, aims to change that narrative by bringing back that old-school Blumhouse vibe. I was fortunate enough to visit the...

Continuing the recent trend of awards shows becoming political again amid Donald Trump’s second term, the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards featured a number of political comments from winners on Saturday.
Arguably the most pointed remarks aimed at the current administration, which, among other things, has tried to roll back federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, came from writer-director Justin Simien.
Seemingly surprised to have won for his nonscripted series Hollywood Black, Simien used his time onstage to address what he sees as a “white nationalist coup taking over this country.”
And he suggested that Hollywood Black, an MGM+ docuseries that chronicles Black people’s experience in the entertainment industry, might be part of how to fight back.
“If you’re serious about stopping the white nationalist coup taking over this country, how about amplifying Black history,” he said. “Because Black people, we’ve been in a fascist country this whole time.

As Tracy Oliver came of age in the Nineties and early 2000s, sitcoms like Girlfriends, Sex and the City and The Golden Girls dominated. Ultimately, their themes surrounding love (or the lack of it) and friendship helped form the blueprint for her own show, Harlem — but she implemented her own flair. “The one thing I felt was different from my group of friends versus those shows was the fact that everyone I went out with wasn’t straight,” says Oliver. “It was so interesting that everyone was heterosexual in these shows,...

Kerry Bellessa's 2024 movie Amber Alert is a fast-paced kidnap story. The film is a remake of Bellessa's 2012 movie of the same name, which made use of a found footage style. While the primary plot elements are similar, the Amber Alert remake is able to expand on the original in a few ways, including some changes to the story. Amber Alert has received mixed to good reviews.
While the direction and interesting take on the abduction thriller genre keep the movie interesting, the real highlight of Amber Alert is the acting performances of the main characters. Amber Alert centers on two people in a ride-share who become involved in a kidnapping when they decide to follow a car fitting the description of an Amber Alert. The movie takes time to introduce the characters and make them feel real, and the two leads have great chemistry.

Nearly 70 years since the original series debuted, Star Trek remains one of the most durable franchises in pop culture, encompassing movies, books, comics, video games — and, of course, multiple TV spin-offs. Lately, Paramount+ has made it possible for Trek creators to try things out across timelines and phases. Bring back Picard for his own show? Why not? Reimagine a Starfleet captain as a parallel-universe villain, and cast Michelle Yeoh? Sure! Make a starship the backdrop for an animated workplace sitcom that honors Trek canon without being totally humorless about it? Yes.
Star Trek: Lower Decks, which premiered in August 2020, has a delightfully simple premise: The bridge crew of Starfleet’s USS Cerritos couldn’t get through their various medium-stakes adventures (they’re usually on “second contact” missions) if not for the unsung work of their dedicated ensigns; they’re known as “lower deckers” for the location of their quarters. The Bold and the Beautiful threw a curveball to viewers last week when the preview video showed a blip from Electra’s (Laneya Grace) past.
When she and Ivy (Ashleigh Brewer) popped up at Forrester Creations, it was assumed it was to put in a love interest for Will (Crew Morrow) and to give Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) something to squirm about.
However, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Electra will bring an entire storyline with her, including a stalker.
Earlier this week, Electra expressed her unease about being one of the faces of the jewelry line, revealing that she preferred to let Ivy get her exposure and remain in the background.
While the relationship between Electra and Remy Pryce has yet to be detailed, it seems he will cause plenty of trouble when he arrives in Los Angeles.

Back in 2022, Get Out, Us, and Nope writer/director Jordan Peele‘s production company Monkeypaw Productions acquired the genre film pitch Goat from writers Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the plan being that Peele would be producing Goat as part of Monkeypaw’s overall deal with Universal Pictures. The sports-related horror project made its way through production under the title Him earlier this year, and now – even though the movie won’t be reaching theatres until September 19, 2025 – the finished product has been given its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Him has been rated R for strong/bloody violence, language throughout, sexual material, nudity and some drug use.

Justin Simien hopes his new historical documentary series “Hollywood Black” will build confidence in upcoming Black filmmakers to pursue their independent projects, even if they don’t have all the resources in the beginning. The writer-director is also hopeful that the doc will help combat competitiveness among higher profile Black creatives in the industry.
“All you got to do is go after it, even if you don’t have all the answers,” Simien told TheWrap. “I’m hoping that this documentary inspires people to have the nerve to just take the shot and to be Ok with not having the connections or the financing or whatever. Just go, just get it made.”
In Simien’s four-part docuseries — the first doc he’s ever directed — the filmmaker peels back the history of Black creatives in Hollywood and how their impact helped shape the entertainment industry in spite of the onslaught of bigotry they faced.

While we all still have a lot of work to do, Black films have come a long way over the past hundred years and the new MGM+ four-part docuseries Hollywood Black covers it all. Based on the writings of film historian Donald Bogle, executive produced by Forest Whitaker, and hosted by director Justin Simien, Hollywood Black doesn't just cover the usual basics. It moves from Birth of a Nation, to Blaxploitation, to Eddie Murphy, to the rise of Jordan Peele, but with every episode being nearly an hour long, it has time to get truly in-depth with lesser-known films through conversations between Simien and guests including Ryan Coogler, Steven Caple Jr., W. Kamau Bell,...

It’s a Tuesday morning in late July, and at a gigantic warehouse-turned-production facility in L.A.’s Canoga Park, Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson are in one studio riffing on the Summer Olympics. On the other side of the building, comedian Earthquake is recording a podcast. Meanwhile, between that building, another nearby and a third in West Hollywood, teams of staffers are running around, working on one of the two dozen other projects across TV, film, audio, branded entertainment and experiential events that Hart’s entertainment company, Hartbeat, has in the pipeline.
You know Kevin Hart, the comedian and star of films like “Ride Along,” “Central Intelligence” and the just released “Borderlands.” But he’d really like you to think of him as Kevin Hart, production maven. This year alone, he’s produced Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady,” a revival of “Comic View” with BET and released...

After playing a younger Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, actor Donald Glover was set to return as the character in a spinoff series of his own. However, last year series director Justin Simien left the project and Glover took over creative duties along with his brother Stephen Glover. It was later announced that the series would be a film.
Simien recently opened up about losing the project and how it felt after working on it for so long. He mentioned that they had gone as far as creating the show bible and that it felt terrible to lose the project after. However, fans are criticizing Simien’s analogy where he compared the project’s end to losing a child.

[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode five of UnPrisoned.]
In season two of UnPrisoned, Paige (Kerry Washington) and Edwin (Delroy Lindo) mending the wounds of their still-shaky father-daughter relationship takes a backseat to their concerns about Finn (Faly Rakotohavana) and how being the son of a mother whose father was incarcerated for most of her life —and who has had no relationship with his own biological father — has affected him.
“I think that maybe the perception last year was that it was a show about a single woman whose father had spent the bulk of her life in prison, and a lot of the narrative did fuel that. But it is a show about a woman, her father and his grandson,” showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It is a multi-generational family, and we have a multi-generational story.”
With that comes the possibility of generational curses, the fear of which prompts Paige to not only let...

Justin Simien, known for being at the helm of acclaimed films and shows like Dear White People and Haunted Mansion, has navigated plenty of unexpected twists and turns in his sci-fi career journey. From developing a highly anticipated Lando Calrissian series for Disney+ to now co-creating an untitled Star Trek comedy for Paramount+, the director is boldly going where few have gone before.
Simien shared the behind-the-scenes story of developing the scrapped Disney+ show centered on everyone’s favorite smuggler, Lando, played by Donald Glover in Solo. “We had a full bible, scripts, and concept art in place,” Simien revealed. However, the plug was pulled in favor of reimagining it as a feature film spearheaded by Glover and his brother. The director said learning about the series being shelved from “the trades” was when it truly hit him.
While this setback left Simien grieving the loss of a passion project,...

Donald Glover's journey as Lando Calrissian has been a twisty path from Solo: A Star Wars Story. A Disney+ spinoff series was announced, and Lando was very far along when Glover announced a creative change. Then it was announced that Lando would be a movie and not a series after all, and now it seems Disney has shelved it altogether, which was all heartbreaking to filmmaker Justin Simien, who was set to direct. He found out in the worst way. "It became clear. They probably wont want me to say this, but I knew it was official when I read it in the trades. But the writing was super on the wall," Simien told Collider. He explained how far along the project was:
It was pretty developed. Yeah, there was a Bible, there was concept art, there were scripts, but it just wasnt meant to be.
"It is true grief,...
