It is no secret that Donald Glover has one of the most eclectic careers in Hollywood. Much of his work is rooted in comedy that dates back to the mid-2000s with the internet sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy, which led to landing a position on the writing staff of "30 Rock" and arguably his breakout role as high school quarterback turned Greendale Community College student Troy Barnes in "Community." Not to mention, Glover is arguably just as recognizable to the public for his Grammy-winning music career under his former stage name, Childish Gambino. But in a career filled with highlights that any creative would kill to accomplish at least once in their lifetime, perhaps no project defines Glover's modus operandi as an artist more than his acclaimed dramedy series, "Atlanta."

Liam Neeson's airplane action thriller from the director of Carry-On has become a global Netflix hit. Though the Irish actor rose to prominence for his performance in Steven Spielberg's acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler's List, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, Neeson redefined himself as an action star with the Taken movies. Some of his other action movies include The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and Cold Pursuit.
Within the action genre, Neeson has collaborated with director Jaume Collet-Serra numerous times. To date, Neeson has starred in four films from the director – Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter – all of which are action thrillers that received mixed reviews from critics, but were mostly box-office successes. Jaume Collet-Serra's latest action thriller is Netflix's Carry-On, which stars Taron Egerton as a Tsa agent who is blackmailed into allowing...

One of the most successful soap opera series of all time, Shameless is an incredibly gritty portrayal of a dysfunctional Gallagher family navigating life on Chicago’s South side. Containing an ensemble cast, the series propelled several actors to success, yet it was Emmy Rossum who stood out the most as Fiona Gallagher. The eldest daughter of the Gallagher family, she was the heart and soul of the show.

Throughout the series, Rossum was the lead and one of the central characters of the show, and thus, it was a shock when the actress decided to leave the series after season 9. Her departure marked a significant turning point for Shameless, sending shockwaves through the fanbase and prompting speculation about the reasons behind her exit. One of Liam Neeson's worst movies has become a global Netflix hit two years after its release. Beginning his film career in 1978, the Irish actor broke through with his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg's acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler's List in 1993, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. From there, Neeson took on several roles in blockbuster movies, including Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins, and Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy.
However, starting in 2009, Neeson established himself as a prominent action star with roles in the Taken movies, The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, and Cold Pursuit. In the early days, before movies became talkies, it was easy to show foreign films in the USA. Just insert new title cards in English, and film fans in St. Louis could watch and understand the latest offering from France or Germany. But then sound came and changed everything.
Of course, distributors in the United States could add subtitles or dub in new voices, but if they really wanted to sell the movie to an American audience, they could also just go ahead and make a new, English-language version.
Whether it is repurposing the Japanese classic Rashomon as The Outrage or taking Spain’s Abre los ojos and turning it into Vanilla Sky, producers in the USA are constantly scouring the globe for some hot property to acquire, rewrite, recast, and in so doing, capture a whole new audience.

Liam Neeson's name would certainly be towards the top of the list when listing the biggest action stars working today. Neeson is perhaps best known for the Taken movies, wherein he plays a father who is desperately looking for his kidnapped daughter. Taken is now a movie trilogy, which began in 2008 and concluded in 2014 with Taken 3. Taken was also later adapted into a 2017 TV series starring Clive Standen in Neeson's former role as Bryan Mills.
Taken is far from the only action film that Neeson has become known for, however. He also plays the villain Ra's Al Ghul in two films within Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, another hugely popular action franchise. Just this year, Neeson was in the action film Absolution, where he played an aging gangster who is trying to forgive himself for his past and restore relationships with his children, only to...

Liam Neeson may not have started out as an action star, but he is certainly considered one now. Though Neeson's '90s and early 2000s career did have a handful of action movies, including Rob Roy (1995), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and Batman Begins (2005), he was just as well known for non-action roles in projects like Schindler's List (1993) and Love Actually (2003). Neeson's career shifted, however, after the release of Taken in 2009.
Taken spawned two less successful sequels, but it also set Neeson down a unique action path. Neeson became the starring figure in a number of mid-budget action movies, with the films usually built around his casting. Notable entries in Neeson's action career include movies like Unknown (2011), The Grey (2011), Non-Stop (2014), A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014), Cold Pursuit (2019), The Ice Road (2021), and In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2023). Many Neeson action movies come and go with little fanfare, and such was the case for one 2015 film.

It’s been a good time recently to be a Liam Neeson fan with a Netflix subscription; one of his most underrated action movies, Run All Night, recently debuted on the platform and made a quick run to the top 10. However, along with this good news also comes the announcement that two other of Neeson’s movies, Cold Pursuit and Non-Stop, will both leave the streamer on December 31, leaving only Run All Night, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and Made in Italy as the only Liam Neeson movies remaining on Netflix. New streaming homes for Cold Pursuit and Non-Stop have not yet been announced, but both films earned a score of over 62% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, impressive considering reviewers are often harsher on action movies than many feel they should be.

A nine-year-old Liam Neeson movie that received mixed reviews from critics is finding newfound success on Netflix. Run All Night is currently #5 on Netflix's list of Top 10 Movies in the United States.
Neeson starred alongside Joel Kinnaman, Ed Harris and Common in Run All Night, a film about an ex-Irish mob hitman who is forced to kill the son of a mob boss and goes on the run with his own estranged son. Run All Night was released in 2015, grossing $71.6 million worldwide and earning mixed reviews from critics. The film has a 59% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site's critics' consensus saying "Liam Neeson is in typically fine form, but Run All Night suffers from a convoluted plot and workmanlike execution."

Opening theatrically on November 1, 2024, Absolution is the latest action extravaganza starring Liam Neeson as a vengeful one-person wrecking crew. However, those entering the film blind expecting the same tried-and-true Neeson revenge formula will be surprised by the artistic flourishes that separate it from the pack.
Although Neeson fans saw a similar heightened aesthetic in Cold Pursuit, also directed by Hans Petter Moland, Absolution focuses more on artistic vision through stunning cinematography, frigid atmosphere, unforgettable music, and measured pacing. The result allows Neeson to give a more nuanced, pensive performance that is different enough to attract new and old fans.

Don't you love teasing a new movie or series to your pals who haven't seen it yet, and dishing something like, "Watch out for ____, he's not what he seems?" The juicy saying rings true in a number of high-profile projects that have hit the masses of late, such as Magpie, a project developed by Daisy Ridley (who stars) and written by her husband, Tom Bateman. Bateman is perhaps most well-known in front of the camera, though, thanks to a number of buzzy projects such as Cold Pursuit, Thirteen Lives, and Kenneth Branagh's new Agatha Christie films. He also leads the Peacock series Based on a True Story with Kaley Cuoco, which is about to return for a second season. MovieWeb recently caught up with Bateman amid the release of Magpie to learn more about the unique character parallels between that and his hit TV show.

In Hans Petter Moland’s “Absolution,” Liam Neeson looks exhausted. His character has been beating people up for money for as long as he can remember, and here he is, at it again. The incessant drone of meaningless violence has taken its toll and now he’s just going through the motions. Unfortunately, it looks like Neeson has a similar problem: He’s trapped once again in tired tough guy material, bringing gravity to a film that’s already dragging him — and the audience — down.
Liam Neeson has had a fascinating career, and he’s spent a lot of it balancing mature dramas and action films. But in the last decade-and-a-half, the balance shifted and many of his roles are now aging tough guys on one last crusade, committing murders which also somehow save his broken family. Even the comedic parts usually play off his deadly dad persona: “Missile Tow,...

Liam Neeson recently said that he’s planning to retire from the action revenge genre that injected his career with a second life, starting with “Taken” back in 2008. Neeson was 55 when he shot that movie — old enough to play a hardened former CIA operative, ageless enough that we believed in his strength and speed and badass vigor. In the 16 years since, the Liam Neeson vigilante B-movie with attitude became its own genre. I’m one of many who look forward to these films and enjoy, in theory, their no-frills sadistic mayhem. But the truth is that Neeson, with his towering presence and sinewy resolve, is always better than the movies themselves.
In memory, most of them blur together, and it’s amazing how much they all still feel powered by that speech in “Taken” (“I can tell you I don’t have any money. But what I do have are...

Plot: An aging gangster attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly.
Review: Over the last sixteen years, Liam Neeson has consistently delivered a string of variations on his 2008 hit Taken. Outside of a handful of exceptions, the Oscar-nominated actor has made movie after movie about cops and soldiers using their particular sets of skills to take down bad guys who underestimate the elderly protagonist. As those projects have begun to blur together, Neeson has had some tricks up his sleeve with voice work in The Lego Movie, comedic turns in A Million Ways To Die In The West, and the occasional big-budget offering. The ones that utilize Neeson’s gravitas and everyman demeanor have stood out from the over fifty projects he has acted on or voiced during that span. You can add Absolution to that shortlist.

Sixteen years after “Taken” made him the most improbable action star on the planet, Liam Neeson has finally announced that he’ll soon be retiring from the genre that made him famous all over again — a career move he plans to implement by the end of 2025. To judge by the latest of the fun(ish) but frequently disposable B pictures that the lanky Irishman has built into a one-man cottage industry, Neeson is stepping away from his schlock at just the right time.
It’s not that “Absolution” is any worse than the awful likes of “Retribution” (quite the opposite), but this seedy crime saga makes it uniquely clear that Neeson’s special set of skills have taken him as far as they can. While even the most forgettable of his Redbox specials (see: 2022’s “Memory”) have found their own special way to iterate on the “aging tough guy with...

The holiday movie season may be getting off to a slow start over the next few weeks, but that’s not due to the lack of star power or Oscar hopefuls. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What’s a little strange about this November kick-off weekend is that there are not one, not two, but three movies from filmmakers who have directed movies that won Best Picture at the Oscars. And yet, only one of them is getting a wide theatrical release and is bound to report box office.
That movie is “Here,” based on the graphic novel by Richard McGuire. It reunites “Forrest Gump” director Robert Zemeckis with two of his stars, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, as well as Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Roth, for a unique family drama that essentially keeps the camera in place to show the events of a specific Philly location over time.

Liam Neeson made a name for himself as an action star quite late in his career, and it seems that he is almost ready to close the book on that part of his life in the near future. While he has perfectly proven his charms in other genres like 1993’s war-drama Schindler’s List, 1999’s family-sci-fi Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and 2003’s rom-com Love Actually as well, Liam Neeson’s performance in the action genre still dominates all. To say the least, action films are the one thing he is better known for than most.

Liam Neeson’s beloved run as an action movie star may be coming to an end next year. The Oscar nominee spoke to People magazine and teased his retirement from the genre that reignited the back half of his acting career. Neeson’s role in 2008’s “Taken” transformed him into an action icon, and he’s never stopped kicking butt on screen in the 16 years since. Even well into his 70s, Neeson continues to perform his own fight scenes with some help from longtime stunt collaborator Mark Vanselow.
“I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage,” Neeson told the publication. “You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”
While Neeson has not yet set a specific date for his last action movie role, he did say that it will likely be in 2025, adding: “Maybe the end of next year.

Liam Neeson's upcoming film Absolution continues a trend that started nearly two decades ago in one of his most iconic films. Neeson, who turned 72 in 2024, is keeping up his momentum as one of the best leading actors in action movies working in Hollywood today with 2024's Absolution. Many of Neeson's best action films are essentially one-person army tales that portray the talented actor's physical tour-de-force performances. Absolution appears to fit right in that category.
The trailer of Absolution stars Neeson as an aging gangster trying to escape his dark past. The film, directed by Hans Peter Moland and written by Tony Gayton, also stars Ron Perlman, Frankie Shaw, and Daniel Diemer. Neeson, an Academy Award nominee for 1993's Schindler's List, has nearly 200 television and movie acting credits to his name after making his feature film debut in 1978's Pligrim's Progress.
Absolution will be released on November 1, 2024.

Kenneth Branagh's upcoming psychological thriller has an exciting cast, including Patricia Arquette, Jodie Comer, and Michael Sheen. Branagh is a great director, and an original project like The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is much more exciting than adaptations like his Hercule Poirot franchise. Branagh will likely continue to make Hercule Poirot films after The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, as A Haunting in Venice teased his next case.
Kenneth Branagh's next psychological thriller film already seems much better than a continuation of his murder mystery Hercule Poirot franchise. Kenneth Branagh is best known for his work in front of the camera, as he's starred in some major movies like Henry V and the Hercule Poirot franchise. We're sure many of you will know Elysia Rotaru best for her role as Taiana Venediktov in Arrow, but the Cold Pursuit and Supernatural star is returning to the DC Universe for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three.
After first voicing Black Canary in Justice Society: World War II, the actress reprises that role in this threequel but also plays the younger Canary this time, presenting her with the unique opportunity to portray mother and daughter. Plus, Rotaru was enlisted to lend her voice to the young Diana Prince/Wonder Woman we catch sight of on Earth-Prime in the closing moments of the movie.
We spoke with Elysia last month about the three characters, learning more about how she approached each of them, the fun of sharing the screen with Green Arrow again, why she enjoys voiceover projects, and much more.

A Million Ways to Die in the West has become a Netflix streaming hit in the U.S. The Seth MacFarlane movie was the ninth most-watched movie in the region for the week of June 3 through June 9. The success of A Million Ways to Die in the West could help usher in a new era for star Liam Neeson.

The movie, which was co-written and directed by Seth MacFarlane, was a disappointment, earning a 33% Rotten Tomatoes score in addition to an $87.2 million box office haul that likely didn't earn it a profit given its $40 million budget (which likely necessitated an $80 million return minimum) and publicity costs. Without question, Joel & Ethan Coen’s Fargo has become one of the most influential films since it first debuted in 1996. Since then, not only has the film launched an Emmy-winning anthology series, but there have been countless movies that have taken influence from the dark comedy classic. Even in the last decade, movies such as Cold Pursuit, Cut Bank, and Arkansas have tried to emulate that perfect blend of humor, crime, and misery, to varying levels of success.

"Made in Italy" stars a wide variety of actors and actresses from Italy, Ireland, and Scotland. Liam Neeson and Micheál Richardson star as father and son, mirroring their real-life relationship. The movie revolves around a complicated father-son relationship and the sale of their old Italian home.
Made in Italy features a cast of mostly Italian actors, which shouldn't surprise most, given the title of the movie, and two related stars from Ireland. The 2020 comedy-drama was directed and written by James D'Arcy, and the film revolves around a complicated relationship between a father and his son, who come together to sell their old Italian home and confront demons from their past. The movie had a limited theatrical release in August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so it only grossed a little under $3 million at the box office.
Made in Italy was also released on video on demand (VOD) in August 2020, where it performed well.

Bob Odenkirk, known for his role as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, is set to star in a new action movie called Normal. Odenkirk has had limited experience in the action genre but is poised to pursue more action roles, including the upcoming Nobody 2, which was delayed but is still in development. The potential success of Normal could lead to a career shift for Odenkirk, similar to Liam Neeson's transition into action movies.
Bob Odenkirk has signed on to star in Normal. Odenkirk is probably best known for playing the role of the untrustworthy lawyer Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and its spinoff prequel Better Call Saul, which recently concluded its run in 2022. However, he may have already found another iconic role with the 2021 action movie Nobody, in which he played an unassuming family man who fights tooth and nail to save his wife and son.

Revenge and vigilante films like Cold Pursuit provide closure and catharsis by delivering justice to the bad guys, satisfying our longing for retribution. Movies in this genre, such as Taken and Non-Stop, offer intense action sequences and a focus on characters seeking justice for loved ones, providing an engaging cinematic experience. Films like Death Wish and John Wick, with their gritty settings and moral ambiguity, resonate with Cold Pursuit and appeal to those who enjoy high body counts and stories of vigilante justice.

It’s easy to forget that up until a decade ago, Liam Neeson wasn’t exactly known for action films. Neeson was considered to be a rather straightforward dramatic actor ever since his breakout role in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic Schindler’s List, but his performance in the action film Taken ended up being the first of many action roles. Neeson has rarely stepped outside the “action revenge thriller” genre in the last decade of his career. His action films tend to run together due to how similar they are; it can be hard to identify how films like The Marksman, Honest Thief, Blacklight, Retribution, and The Commuter are distinct from each other. However, Neeson’s performance in the 2019 action thriller Cold Pursuit ended up being an outlier in his action resume, thanks to its morbid sense of humor and more extreme ultra violence. Many of Neeson’s action films are tongue-in-cheek,...

Liam Neeson's character, Nels Coxman, seeks revenge after his son's death from a drug overdose, leading to a violent battle with a local drug cartel. "Cold Pursuit" takes place in the fictional town of Kehoe, Colorado, but was primarily filmed in Alberta, Canada, due to its similarities in snowy, mountainous conditions. British Columbia, Canada, was also chosen as a filming location, with Vancouver serving as one of the primary cities for filming. Norway was potentially used as a filming location, although it is unclear which scenes were captured there. The choice makes sense, given the snowy setting and the director's ties to the country.
The title of Cold Pursuit does not bury the lede regarding the story's setting — it takes place in the snowy terrain of Colorado in the United States, but the movie's production was located a little farther north. The 2019 action thriller film stars Liam Neeson as Nels Coxman, a snowplow driver who works at a ski resort, and revolves around Nels' revenge plot following the murder of his son by a drug cartel.

Cold Pursuit is a darkly comedic revenge thriller that sets itself apart with its scintillating snow-clad backdrops and unconventional storytelling format. The diverse and intriguing character beats of Cold Pursuit keep viewers hooked throughout the film, even though they may not form an emotional connection with the characters. The compelling performances of the cast members, particularly Liam Neeson as the main character Nels Coxman, are crucial in selling the film's black comedy and executing its action and drama.
Cold Pursuit boasts a roster of talented actors who have starred in several other renowned television shows and movies.
