This week, A24 is releasing Y2K, starring Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison, as well as its co-writer and director, Kyle Mooney. One of the most notable traits that he left behind were memorable digital shorts, many with Beck Bennett, a former collaborator of his from the YouTube comedy troupe, Good Neighbor. But before the comedic apocalypse in Y2K, Mooney's directorial debut, he also co-wrote another odd genre-bending feature, Brigsby Bear.

Exclusive: The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone has come aboard Searchlight’s comedy DNA, starring Ben Schwartz and Sam Rockwell, as director and producer.

The project is the second announced in two weeks for Taccone, who recently launched production in Finland on The Trip, a thriller starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving. News of the film first broke in the summer of 2020, after Schwartz sold it to Searchlight as an untitled pitch, with Rockwell also cementing his involvement at that time.

DNA‘s logline is being kept under wraps. Schwartz wrote the script, with Ali Bell, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Taccone to produce under their Party Over Here banner. Schwartz and Rockwell are the executive producers. SVP of Production Taylor Friedman and Creative Executive Cornelia Burleigh are overseeing the project for Searchlight Pictures, reporting to Heads of Production and Development DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.

The past year has been a tumultuous one in the world of manga, with numerous authors putting their works on hiatus, as well as the conclusions of popular series like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia leaving holes in the Shōnen Jump lineup. Now, the publishing house behind the most successful manga takes another hit, as Shueisha has been forced to pull the one-shot manga Sayonara Wonder Rabbit from the Tonari Young Jump website (the same online magazine where One-Punch Man is published) for suspicion of plagiarism.

First reported by Japanese news outlet Jisin, the one-shot manga by Yuki Komuro, released on November 21, 2024, instantly drew attention from readers due to its similarity to a 2017 American film titled, Brigsby Bear. Jisin contacted Shueisha regarding the comments from concerned fans, which prompted them to release a statement regarding the matter on their official blog. The manga was swiftly pulled from the web soon after.

Amidst piracy and leaks, plagiarism is another growing concern in the manga industry. Mark Hamill’s movie is an example of this, especially with its influence on this manga.

The film, although underrated, has its share of fanbase. In regards to the manga, though, most fans weren’t happy with the series’ blatant copying of the plot.

The publishing company removed the manga after serious allegations. This sparked an array of reactions among the viewers and fans. But there’s more to it.

Interestingly, the film is a commentary on adulthood and the rites of passage. Its compelling themes and storyline are what sets it apart from the manga in more ways than one.

Shueisha removes this manga from its platforms

Shueisha as we all know, is a renowned manga publishing company along the lines of Kodansha and Viz Media.

Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis are taking “The Trip.” Jorma Taccone, a member of the Lonely Island comedy group and co-director of “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” is directing from a script by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney (BriTANicK).

The film is a remake of Tommy Wirkola’s blood-soaked Norwegian action comedy from 2021 — “I onde dager,” starring Aksel Hennie and Noomi Rapace.

XYZ is financing the film and producing alongside 87North’s Kelly McCormick, Lee Kim and Guy Danella. Taccone and Wirkola are executive producing with Karen Gillan co-producing. Original producers Jørgen Storm Rosenberg and Kjetil Omberg will executive produce the new version of “The Trip.”

Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s Fruit Tree has entered into a first-look production pact with Universal Pictures.

The deal expands on the creative partnership between Fruit Tree — led by two-time Oscar winner Stone, Emmy nominated writer-director McCary and Ali Herting — and the studio, following news that Stone will star in an upcoming Universal film directed by McCary.

Universal Pictures has entered into a first-look deal with two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone’s Fruit Tree production label, which she heads up with Emmy-nominated writer-director Dave McCary and Ali Herting.

This new pact expands upon the creative relationship between Fruit Tree and Universal that includes a recently announced untitled film starring Stone to be directed by McCary for Universal.

Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s production banner Fruit Tree has bore quite a bit of fruit, and now they are reaping the rewards. The couple’s company, which they run alongside Ali Herting, has signed a first-look film deal with Universal Pictures, the studio announced Thursday.

The deal brings the two-time Oscar-winning actress into the Universal fold alongside some of the studio’s other buzzy first-look relationships with filmmakers like Jordan Peele, Steven Spielberg, the Daniels, David Leitch, and more.

No projects were announced today under the deal, but the couple already has an untitled movie at Universal that will star Stone and will be directed by McCary.

Saturday Night Live standout Kyle Mooney directs the movie that hits theaters Dec. 6. The film centers on two high school juniors who find themselves fending for their lives after crashing a New Year’s Eve shindig on the last night of 1999. Rounding out the cast are Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone and Mooney.

Yes, that title is very direct in that this film deals with the infamous turn of the millennium, when people all around the world were concerned that technology was going to go haywire at the stroke of midnight on December 31, 1999. May 2 sees the premiere of The Idea of You, a romantic-comedy that features Hathaway as a 40-year-old mom finding romance with a 24-year-old boy band singer (Nicholas Galitzine). Having saved the medium of film forever, Prime Video is celebrating with some big time library titles this month as well. American Fiction and BlacKkKlansman arrive on May 14 and will be followed by Creed and Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story on May 16.

SNL alum Kyle Mooney previously made his debut as a feature screenwriter with the indie dramedy Brigsby Bear, and now he’s making the leap to the director’s chair with the A24 pic Y2K. Although the film is uneven, the comedic highs are enough to compensate for the somewhat generic nostalgia-bait storytelling.

Y2K tells the story of a group of teenagers who go to a wild party on the eve of the new millennium, only for things to get even wilder when the world threatens to end. It’s an ingenious concept, and while it takes a bit of time for the movie to hit its stride, Mooney and Evan Winter’s script eventually becomes an entertaining, wacky adventure.

The first half of the film is incredibly annoying. It’s the type of cringe comedy that tries to get laughs by saying, “Look at how stupid we were 25 years ago!

December 31, 1999. Those old enough to remember know what a strange time that was. It was a time filled with excitement, anxiety, and uncertainty around what was going to happen when the clock struck midnight and a new millennium would begin.

Director Kyle Mooney and writer Evan Winter take that momentous evening and absolutely run with it in the insane nostalgia-filled comedy Y2K.

Y2K was nothing like I was expecting. If this is a film you are interested in seeing, and you religiously watched Total Request Live on MTV and know every word to “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, I would probably recommend you stop reading this review right now and see this movie the first opportunity you get.

Mooney, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, made his directorial debut with Brigsby Bear in 2017. The film was one of my favorites of the year as it combined awkward humour with incredible sincerity.

In what could almost be a weird pop-cultural physics phenomenon, people keep making youth nostalgia movies that highlight a particular moment, an iconic time period that everyone who grew up in it remembers with transcendent fondness — yet the distance between the moment and the movie commemorating it keeps getting longer and longer. “American Graffiti,” the movie that invented the genre, was set in 1962 and came out 11 years later, in 1973. “Dazed and Confused” was set in 1976 and came out 17 years later, in 1993. “Adventureland” was set in 1987 and came out 22 years later, in 2009. And now we have “Y2K,” an end-of-the-millennium high-school party movie that premiered last night at SXSW. It’s set on the last day (and the day after) of 1999, and it’s coming out 25 years later. When somebody ultimately makes a youth nostalgia movie set in 2024, it probably won’t come out until 2054.

South by Southwest is a festival like none other. Spread across the bustling streets of Downtown Austin, the convergence event truly has something for everyone.

South by Southwest, better known as SxSw, is a tech conference meets music festival meets film festival. With hundreds of films, bands, startups, and established brands all over the city, the energy is unrivaled.

This year is no different as thousands prepare to arrive at the Texas capitol this week.

I will be lucky enough to attend this year’s festival for a whole week and the film lineup is one of the strongest in years. SxSw is a great combination of established, anticipated films mixed with independent films with massive potential to be the next big thing.

In the past some of the competition films that have premiered at the festival have been Short Term 12, Peanut Butter Falcon, Tiny Furniture. Krisha, and more.

Lightyear Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to coming-of-age drama “Edge of Everything” from Visit Films. The film stars Sierra McCormick, previously seen in Slamdance award winner “The Vast of Night.”

The film is from writer-director duo Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman, who are making their feature-length narrative debut. McCormick plays a teen going through the seemingly unbearable trials and tribulations of growing up.

The drama will have its U.S. premiere on Feb. 8 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and a limited theatrical release will follow in the spring, after which the film will be released on digital platforms and in the home entertainment market.

Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

With so many A24 items looking for 2024 positioning, we wouldn’t be surprised if Kyle Mooney‘s feature debut waits for the next train to pass but we kinda like what a Park City premiere might do for the film. Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, Lachlan Watson, Mason Gooding, The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, Eduardo Franco, Miles Robbins, Alicia Silverstone, Fred Hechinger and Daniel Zolghadri populate what is bring coined as a disaster comedy. Production on Y2K would have taken place in New Jersey around the month of April. Mooney needs no introduction to most because of his work with SNL, but it’s worth mentioning that the actor, comedian, writer, producer was one of the co-writers on Dave McCary’s Brigsby Bear (2017) – a Sundance and Cannes selection.…...

Season 2 of last summer’s hit breakout series “The Bear” is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 22. After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.

Fresh off its Best Picture Oscar win, A24 has announced a new disaster comedy called “Y2K” from “SNL” alum Kyle Mooney, who co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Winter and will direct.

Set on New Year’s Eve 1999, the story follows two high school “nobodies” who decide to crash the last big party before the new millennium. When the clock strikes midnight, the night gets more insane than they ever could have imagined.

Following the success of their years-long partnership that spawned seven original films including Natalie Morales’ “Plan B” and “Crush,” Hulu Originals has renewed its first look deal with comedy production company American High. Jason Zaro (“Brigsby Bear”) will serve as co-producer across the new slate of films for Hulu.

The renewed partnership comes on the heels of the successful release of “It’s a Wonderful Binge” in November 2022, which starred Kaitlin Olson, Danny Trejo, Nick Swardson, Tim Meadows. The movie serves as a sequel to the first Hulu original comedy under the American High banner, “The Binge,” which featured Vince Vaughn, Skyler Gisondo, Eduardo Franco, Dexter Darden.

Coming up, Hulu will release the eighth film on American High’s original slate, “Miguel Wants to Fight,” a coming of age comedy about a 17-year-old who asks his three best friends to help him get in his first fight ever before he moves to a new city.

Founded in 2017 by writer, director and producer Jeremy Garelick and producer Mickey Liddell’s Ld Entertainment, American High aims to tell “modern stories of eclectic characters from diverse backgrounds as they navigate the most formative (and often most hilarious) years of their lives.”

Under the renewed partnership announced Wednesday, the companies will release “Miguel Wants to Fight,” a coming of age comedy about a 17-year-old who asks his three best friends to help him get in his first fight ever before he moves to a new city. The cast includes Tyler Dean Flores, Imani Lewis, Christian Vunipola, Suraj Partha and Raul Castillo.

The agreement with Hulu, first established in 2019, has generated seven original films so far, with an eighth and final film of the original slate on the way.

Isla Fisher (Wolf Like Me) and Greg Kinnear (Shining Vale) will topline the family comedy The Present, from director Christian Ditter (How to Be Single), which has entered production in Los Angeles.

In the film from Stuart Ford’s independent content studio AGC Studios, a brilliant boy discovers he can manipulate time using an enchanted family heirloom, then teaming up with his siblings to go back to the eve of their parents’ separation in hopes of changing the outcome. As their schemes become more elaborate, the siblings will learn about family bonds and what they can and can’t control. Fisher and Kinnear are playing the parents in search of reconciliation, with Easton Rocket Sweda (General Hospital), Shay Rudolph (The Baby-Sitters Club) and Mason Shea Joyce (Euphoria) portraying the siblings who just might be the only people who can make that happen.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.

It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

Where to Watch ‘Saturday Morning All Star Hits!’: Netflix

Even a minute longer, and “Saturday Morning All Star Hits!” probably wouldn’t work. With a handful of weekend cartoon parodies, fake commercials/trailers, and a wacky brother hijinks framing device, taking on any more than a half-hour at a time would be a recipe for this Netflix show to overstay its welcome.

Improbably, though, it doesn’t. Never spending more than a few minutes in any of these worlds, “Saturday Morning All Star Hits!” (take the first letters of each name in that title if you want a totally tubular surprise) recaptures the vibe of Saturday morning favorites in all their camcorder-chic glory.

The show is the combined brainchild of the live-action “Brigsby Bear” duo Kyle Mooney and Dave McCary and the animation stylings of Ben Jones, a vet of “Axe Cop” and “Neo Yokio.

Ways & Means, the indie film and television company, has named Thomas Grabinski as head of development.

The newly created role will report to principals Lana Kim and Jett Steiger, who founded the label in 2012.

Grabinski joins them from 3311 Productions, which made notable titles including “The Assistant,” “Brigsby Bear” and “John and the Hole.” He also served at Justin Lin’s Perfect Storm Entertainment.

"I feel like I'm bothering your friend..." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for a wacky indie comedy titled Some of Our Stallions, the latest from filmmaker Carson Mell. This buddy comedy-drama comes from the filmmakers behind Brigsby Bear, Silicon Valley, and Jay & Silent Bob Reboot. When best friends Beautiful Bill and Andy, newly released from a mandatory stint at a mental hospital, struggle to fit into regular society, Bill decides they need romantic love. This kicks off a years-long series of misadventures that challenge not only their friendship, but their grasp on sanity. In the 80 years since Tom and Jerry made their cartoon debut, the duo have zonked, bonked and kerplonked one another too many times to count, and somehow the joke has never gotten old. Nor have the aggravated gray cat and his rival the clever brown mouse, who remain forever young, and forever scrappy — a hand-drawn Punch and Judy whose ruthless slapstick antics have withstood critiques from all corners, including parents who think such animated violence could be a bad influence on kids.

The erstwhile MGM stars got bad reviews when Film Roman tried to go the feature route in 1993 (that movie never should have given them voices), and they’ll probably get skewered again now that Warner Bros. has tried to position the animated duo alongside a live-action ensemble (led by a pair of daffy performances from Chloë Grace Moretz and Michael Peña) in “Tom & Jerry.” But these two...

For every “Paddington” or “21 Jump Street” that turns existing intellectual property into delightful entertainment, there are dozens of failed attempts, like “Chips” or “Marmaduke” or “Baywatch.” Joining that latter list of disappointments is “Tom & Jerry,” a frustratingly unfunny attempt to revive the “Itchy and Scratchy”-inspiring cat and mouse as a live-action-animation hybrid.

If there’s a way of taking those classic slapstick shorts and making their feline-vs.-rodent mayhem appealing over the course of a feature film, director Tim Story (2019’s dreadful “Shaft”) and screenwriter Kevin Costello (“Brigsby Bear”) haven’t cracked the code.

“Tom & Jerry” isn’t an origin story, or an updating, or a revival, or even an ironic commentary. It’s not really much of anything, except an unreal melding of 2-D animated characters and real people in what’s supposed to be modern-day New York City.
