I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Irish horror. The legends and myths just land with me for some reason (spoiler: I’m Irish), and there’s still infinite untapped potential within the horror genre to dredge up some of the scariest bits of Celtic folklore. Last year’s The Watchers gave it an earnest yet uneven attempt, and Evil Dead Rise’s Lee Cronin debuted with the A24 flick The Hole in the Ground, a terrifying tale of a changeling run amok.

Changelings tend to be the most popular, really. The sensational indie You Are Not My Mother tread similar ground with body-swaps, and The Cellar dabbles in some pretty frightening Lovecraftian mythos. Among the best, however, and a personal favorite of mine, has to be Corin Hardy’s The Hallow. It’s a stripped-down home invasion shocker that supplants conventional antagonists with a forest full of hostile fairies.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Brener was asked how much further The Conjuring Universe can reasonably be expected to go in the future. "It's testing through the roof and we're only at the director's cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you're normally very, very scared about the status of your film," Brener said of the next film in the franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites. "We’re very early in the process, have very preliminary visual effects, but it’s already through the roof. So while this is last of what we call phase one, we are hopeful that we can make more." When asked if this meant that a Marvel Cinematic Universe-style "phase two" was in the works, Brener responded, "Phase two is Tbd."

But Warner Bros. and New Line are aware that a continuous investment in the series could create profits for both parties for years to come. It’s no secret that this year’s upcoming sequel The Conjuring: Last Rites is said to be the final installment in the mainline franchise, with Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga playing the Warrens for the final time (allegedly). But what does that actually mean, you ask?

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter this week, New Line Cinema Cco Richard Brener has indicated that what’s actually ending with Last Rites is merely “phase one” of the extended Conjuring Universe which thus far includes three core Conjuring movies along with a host of spinoffs including The Nun, The Nun 2, Annabelle, and Annabelle Comes Home.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is an upcoming supernatural horror movie. It is directed by Michael Chaves and stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. They return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life paranormal investigators. This movie is a sequel to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) and the ninth film in The Conjuring Universe. James Wan and Peter Safran are producing the film once again.

During WB’s CinemaCon presentation this year new details regarding the movie have been revealed. Last Rites will follow the final case of the Warrens, making it the final film in the mainline franchise.

Before The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was released in June 2021, director Michael Chaves spoke about the possibility of more films in the series. He mentioned in an interview that the ending of the last movie left room for new stories.

Two years after becoming the co-heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran brought us up to speed on their vision of an interconnected DC across TV and film, a phase that they entitled “Gods and Monsters.”

Mostly everything they announced back in January 2023 is intact in some form or fashion, and we’ve provided an update on projects below. The duo’s plan moving forward is to release two live-action and one animated DC film per year. They’re also targeting two-live action and two animated series for Max per year. Up the road, there’s a place… stuck in time. Sony Pictures has released the brand new trailer for David F. Sandberg’s Until Dawn, and it delivers a monster mash of time loop terror.

As the previous trailer revealed, the movie traps a group of characters in a creepy location that’s stuck in time, with new threats being unleashed as the characters attempt to survive until dawn. This second trailer for Until Dawn introduces more of the monstrous threats, while also promising that we’re in store for a whole lot of bloody slasher movie madness.

Several new posters from the horror video game adaptation, Until Dawn, have been revealed, and they introduce the monsters that will haunt the characters, stuck in a time loop, are forced to relive the nightmare over and over again. There will be a brand-new trailer debuting tomorrow ahead of the film's release in April.

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg with a script by Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler. Until Dawn stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Odessa A'zion, Maia Mitchell, and Belmont Cameli. Interestingly, Peter Stormare (Fargo) plays Dr. Hill, who was a character in the video game that the actor voiced.

The official plot reads:

Every night, a different nightmare. Sony Pictures lets us know that the new trailer for the Until Dawn movie arrives tomorrow, and in the meantime they’ve released new posters.

The horror genre is well-regarded in cinema as the closest thing to a guaranteed money-maker there is, at least where non-ip is concerned. Horror movies in general have a built-in fan base who are always willing (if not eager) to go check out the latest supernatural thriller, throwback slasher, zombie flick, or whatever other scares are in store. However, one of the other staples of the genre is its thriftiness — you don't need a huge budget to make an effective and successful horror movie, and that in turn makes it more possible for the movie to be successful at the box office. Although most horror movies turn a healthy profit, you don't tend to see too many reaching the same lofty financial heights as the average multi-million dollar blockbuster.

The closest horror movies come to earning billions of dollars is when they're part of a successful franchise, and sometimes not even then.

It's been over a decade since The Conjuring introduced viewers to a fictionalized version of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. Fans will be able to revisit the story when the 2013 horror movie debuts on Max on Feb. 1.

Directed by James Wan from a script by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, the movie serves as the first entry in The Conjuring universe. Set in 1971, the story follows Roger and Carolyn Perron, who move into an old, secluded farmhouse in Rhode Island. After the family, which includes daughters Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, April, and their dog, Sadie, discovers a boarded-up cellar in the house, they are plagued by a series of strange incidents.

The upcoming movie will have a similar mechanic to the choose-your-own-adventure style of the video game, a unique way to bring the experience to life on the big screen. We’ve been told not to expect a 1:1 adaptation of the fan favorite video game, but it looks like Sandberg and company made sure their Until Dawn movie has that video game feel to it all the same.

A couple years ago, Spider One – the frontman of Powerman 5000 and the brother of fellow musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie – made his feature directorial debut with the horror anthology Allegoria. Last year, his second feature – a horror film called Bury the Bride – was released through the Tubi streaming service. His third film, which is called Little Bites, recently secured a worldwide distribution deal through Rlje Films and the Shudder streaming service – and, having received a theatrical and VOD release in October, Little Bites is now set to start streaming on Shudder as of February 21st!

Written and directed by Spider One, Little Bites centers on Mindy, a young widow and mother who tries to protect her daughter Alice from a flesh eating monster named Agyar. Mindy has been secretly sacrificing her own life by allowing the creature to feast on her body as she keeps Alice hidden away at her grandmother’s house.

Of particular note, Sandberg reveals in the video that the upcoming Until Dawn movie will have a similar mechanic to the choose-your-own-adventure style of the video game.

“One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways,” Sandberg explains. “The movie has this mechanic, where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre.”

“To survive,” Sandberg continues, “They have to make it Until Dawn.

Horror fans wondering just how the Poohniverse will differentiate itself from other major horror franchises now have an answer. Scott Chambers, the writer and director of the upcoming Poohniverse entry Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare, revealed in an interview with ComicBook.com that the franchise won't play out the same as The Conjuring universe or the two worlds pitted against each other in Freddy vs. Jason.

Moreover, Chambers says his film will be totally different from the two Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey films. While those movies feature slasher killers in animal masks, Neverland Nightmare is more psychological, having more in common with Scott Derrickson's indie horror hit The Black Phone. He stated:

"...with, Peter Pan, well, with the Poohniverse in general, every single entry will feel different to the last, and that is to open it up to different audiences... I compare it a lot to the 'Conjuring' universe...

It's been 11 years since James Wan's The Conjuring crept its way into theaters in July 2013, spawning not only one of the most successful horror franchises of all time but the first interconnected cinematic universe in the horror genre, aptly dubbed The Conjuring Universe. What began as a simple (but very effective) haunted house film loosely based on true events, eventually became a series of branching paths, blurring the real-life investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren with fictitious horror trappings and extended lore to craft one of the more unique franchises in Hollywood today. Within The Conjuring Universe, multiple subseries have been spawned, including The Nun and Annabelle franchises, both serving as spin-offs to the main series of films. With a current total of 9 entries, The Conjuring Universe has grossed a combined $2.2 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing horror franchise ever.

2024 guaranteed the promising future of successful franchises such as Deadpool and Planet of the Apes but also might have sealed the fate of other franchises, such as in the case of Madame Web's box office flop and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga's disappointing opening weekend. While some may complain there are too many sequels and reboots in theaters, the reality is that film franchises will exist as long as they’re successful.

Movie studios produce entertainment, but ultimately, their goal is to make money. If a film is financially prosperous, chances are a second and third will succeed, too. If audiences embrace certain movies and characters, giving them more of what they want makes sense. This approach has undoubtedly resulted in some dreadful sequels but has also birthed some excellent and beloved film series. After all, the highest-grossing franchises of all time didn’t get to the top by being mediocre.

1428 Elm previously reported that Sony would be releasing the acclaimed outbreak horror movie 28 Days Later on to digital for purchase or rental soon, but in light of the terrific performance and reception to the newly released 28 Years Later trailer, the company will be fast-tracking the digital release date. After not being available to buy digitally for years (and the physical copies going out of print), you will be able to purchase 28 Days Later at home starting on Wednesday, December 18.

The official trailer for Danny Boyle’s sequel 28 Years Later was released by Sony just about one week ago and the first look is already posting massively impressive viewership numbers.

Deadline reports today that the official trailer for 28 Years Later is now officially the second most watched new horror movie trailer in history, behind only It: Chapter Two (2019)!

The outlet explains, “Not only was the 28 Years Later trailer the most watched horror trailer in 2024 at 60.2M global views [in the first 24 hours alone], but it’s also the second biggest trailer of all-time behind It Chapter Two (96M views, $91M opening).” Deadline also lets us know today, “Currently, the 28 Years Later trailer has racked up 146.1M global views.”

Deadline provides further context by listing off 24-hour viewership numbers for some of the other biggest horror movie trailers of all time, including the following big name titles…

Exclusive: The 24-hour traffic for the 28 Years Later trailer was so massive, that in response, Sony is releasing the original 2002 Danny Boyle directed zombie movie, 28 Days Later on digital Dec. 18 for purchase and rental. This is all because of the rabid fan response. 28 Years Later is a follow-up to 28 Days Later.

Not only was the 28 Years Later trailer the most watched horror trailer in 2024 at 60.2M global views, but it’s also the second biggest trailer of all-time behind It Chapter Two. Currently, the 28 Years Later trailer has racked up 146.1M global views.

In addition, the viewership for 28 Years Later was higher than the first trailer drops of The Nun, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Halloween, as well as from this year, Smile 2 and Nosferatu (26.4M views).

Duly note these figures come from WaveMetrix and do not include TikTok views. Why? Because a studio trailer buy on TikTok can erratically mushroom viewing stats. Back out TikTok, keeps the competitive social media measuring field equal.

The 28 horror franchise were originally released respectively by Searchlight Pictures and Fox Atomic labels at the former 20th Century Fox, the two films grossing a near combined $150M at the global box office. Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris starred in 28 Days Later, while Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner and Robert Carlye starred in the sequel, 28 Weeks Later.

Sony prevailed in winning the revamped franchise 28 Years Later with Boyle reteaming with scribe Alex Garland and star Murphy with Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell joining. The budget for the new movies are in the range of $75 million. Signs that Warner Bros DC Studios is very serious about its standalone Clayface movie even though it doesn’t have a director or star yet: The studio is given the movie written by Mike Flanagan a Sept. 11, 2026 theatrical release. That’s the famed post Labor Day gold mine weekend for Warner Bros with such movies as the It, The Nun and Beetlejuice franchises.

Producing is DC co-bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran as well as The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. EP is Chantal Nong. Doctor Sleep filmmaker Flanagan is reportedly conceiving Clayface as a horror-thriller-tragedy. He won’t be painted as a villain which has been his reputation, notoriously a villain to Batman.

Clayface got his DC introduction as part of Detective Comics #40 in June of 1940. The original Clayface was a moderately successful actor who adopted the identity of a character he’d portrayed in a horror pic after turning to crime.
