Venice International Film Festival has announced which film will be closing the event in September.

La Sociedad de la nieve (‘Society of the Snow’), a story of survival in extreme conditions, will be screened on Saturday 9 September in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido di Venezia – the screening to be held after the Festival’s awards are handed out.

The film is directed by J.A. Bayona and tells the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 which, in 1972, had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, and crashed in the heart of the Andes.

Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they had to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

The cast of the film includes Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Esteban Kukuriczka and Tomas Wolf.

Principal photography has wrapped in Spain’s La Rioja region on Isabel Coixet’s romantic drama “Un Amor,” a tale of obsessive passion that forces the film’s protagonist to reconsider the woman she thought she was. The 2023 Goya actress winner Laia Costa (“Lullaby”) stars opposite Hovik Keuchkerian (“Money Heist”); Film Constellation handles world sales. A sales promo will be unveiled for buyers in Cannes.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.

In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.

In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.

Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

When the name of your streaming service so neatly fits into the word “Halloween,” you have a moral imperative to bring the goods come spooky season. Thankfully Hulu is abiding by that obligation with its list of new releases for October 2022.

Halloween…or rather Huluween is set to be a big deal for the streamer. This month sees a bevy of horror offerings. On the TV side of things, the series adaptation of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser premieres on Oct. 7. That will be accompanied by two animated specials from Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland. The first is A Sinister Halloween Scary Opposites Solar Special on Oct. 3, which is followed by The Paloni Show! Halloween Special! on Oct. 17.

Diana Silvers, best known for her work in “Ma” and “Space Force,” rounds out the cast of writer and director Alec Griffen Roth’s debut feature film.

We're barely past the midpoint and it's already been a great year for horror movies. A Quiet Place pleased critics and genre aficionados in droves, Hereditary left audiences shocked and gasping, Upgrade delivered unprecedented ultraviolence, and Annihilation found an unlikely yet enthralling intersect between fantasy and body horror. We've also seen solid sequels in Insidious: The Last Key, The First Purge, and Hellraiser: Judgment. And the best may be yet to come, with The Nun, The Predator, and Halloween all coming down the pike when it comes to 2018 horror Movies.

Sure, there have been some disappointments as well but there've also been some incredible genre offerings that have fallen through the cracks. Severin Films has put together a stellar limited edition release of The Changeling, and Scream Factory is resurrecting John Carpenter's Someone’s Watching Me! on Blu-ray as well. Scream Factory has also teamed up with IFC Midnight for a trio of releases—Pyewacket, Lowlife, and Wildling—and Marrowbone arrives on both formats, too.

Documentary fans, get ready to queue up Hulu next month with the arrival of two originals on the streamer.

“Minding the Gap” (pictured above) will drop on Aug.17, a documentary that compiles more than 12 years of footage in Rockford, Illinois, filmmaker Bing Liu looks at the correlation between skateboarders’ upbringings and the complex nature of modern masculinity.

“Crime and Punishment” will follow, dropping on Aug. 24. Stephen Maing directed, produced and filmed this documentary that goes behind the scenes of discriminatory policing practices and corruption in the New York Police Department.

Sanchez makes his directorial debut with this inconsistent but creepy supernatural thriller about a sick mother and her four children who move into the dilapidated Marrowbone House in rural America. Soon after settling in, ghostly goings on shatter the family harmony and the Marrowbone inhabitants find themselves battling a malevolent spirit which may have ties to their past.

The Secret of Marrowbone succeeds in delivering bone-rattling frights and hair-whitening tension, which many modern horrors struggle to achieve without resorting to volume cranked jump scares, but sadly its drama is hampered by flunky dialogue, hack acting and galling characters.

Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split, Thoroughbreds) star in Marrowbone, hitting theaters on the luckiest of days, Friday, April 13th. Ahead of the movie's release, a clip from the film teases either an escape or a terrible demise for Heaton's character, Billy.

If there’s one thing that should make us all appreciate just how difficult a high-wire act is pulled off in films like “The Others,” “The Devil’s Backbone” or indeed J.A. Bayona‘s peerless “The Orphanage,” it may well be watching “Marrowbone,” the directorial debut from “The Orphanage” screenwriter, Sergio G. Sanchez. Handsomely shot, evocatively designed, solidly cast and terribly daft, it also presents your friendly neighborhood reviewer with something of a challenge.

For a mystery film, Sergio G. Sánchez’s Marrowbone inspires a lot of questions, although they’re more related to what’s outside the film. Here’s a question that kept popping up in my mind: did the writer of The Orphanage – one of the more unsettling and affective horror films from this century – really make this? The family drama, ambiguously supernatural scares, and tragic undercurrent from The Orphanage are all here, but filtered through a screenplay written by someone who must have been raised by wolves. Maybe this is a different Sergio G. Sánchez making this. Maybe this impostor lied on the application form. Either way, that situation is easier to believe than almost anything in Marrowbone.

Anya Taylor-Joy is clearly the new genre it-girl. Since making her feature debut in 2015’s critically lauded The Witch, Taylor-Joy has starred in Luke Scott’s sci-fi actioner Morgan and now in M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming thriller Split. With two more efforts in the genre set for release in 2017, she seems to have taken a liking to the darker side of cinema. It’s no wonder her name keeps popping up in casting rumors for the X-Men spinoff New Mutants, which has been described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes” style horror film.

As for Split, it stars Taylor-Joy as one of three young women who are abducted by Kevin (James McAvoy), a man who suffers from a multiple personality disorder. If they hope to escape, the women must navigate his 24 personalities before they fall prey to “the beast.”

You can say Anya Taylor-Joy is something of a modern scream queen, breaking into film this year with The Witch, Morgan and the upcoming Split from M. Night Shyamalan. Aside from Netflix’s Barack Obama biopic, Barry, Taylor-Joy’s first three movies have established her as the new It girl of the horror genre.

The Witch, in particular, was a 2015 Sundance Film Festival breakout that scared up $40 million at the box office when it was released in February and topped Rolling Stone and Vulture’s top horror film lists. The film, about a Puritan family threated by witchcraft, earned nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Independent Spirit Awards as well as a Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor for Taylor-Joy, where the 20-year-old actress stunned in a Gucci gown designed by Alessandro Michele.

Filmmaker Juan Bayona will start filming the Jurassic World sequel next February

Five months ago, Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) was hired to direct the planned Jurassic World sequel. Before starting to film that movie, Focus Features is releasing Bayona’s third feature as a director, an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ A Monster Calls, starring Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbell and Liam Neeson, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival today.

When speaking to Bayona about the film earlier, Lrm asked whether he would be able to bring some of his regular Spanish crew over to Jurassic World 2, and we asked how it’s been going on the project, being that it will be his first straight-up studio film and one that's part of a major franchise as well.
