I've been a fan of the character since I was a kid. I grew up reading the comics and watching the Christopher Reeve movies, and he always resonated with me. As for the new film, I saw it yesterday. It's quite different from what we're used to seeing from Superman on the big screen. It draws inspiration from the Silver Age of DC Comics, which makes it much more fantastical than usual, almost as if it were ripped directly from the pages of a comic book. It also clearly has James Gunn's stamp on it, for better or worse, and plenty of humor (some funny, some not so much). But it's a movie with its heart in the right place, and the director clearly understands the essence of what the Superman character represents, and that shines through the entire film.
Let me start off by saying I love James Gunn. I love Richard Donner. And yes, heaven forbid, I even love Zack Snyder. I am a fan of Superman the character. I'm not in a faction or a side in a silly internet fight.
I wanted this to succeed in every way possible. If I said I remotely liked it, I'd be just lying to myself.
The tone... where do I begin. This movie thinks Superman is a joke. Not a self aware fun kind of joke (like Adam West Batman). No the film thinks Superman is a stupid character who deserves to be mocked (more akin to Joel Schumacher's Batman). I know that'll work for some people, but as someone who has had a deep love for the character since first watching Superman the Animated Series reruns as a child, I felt betrayed. Lex Luthor and Lois Lane felt like they were competing for most dislikable versions of their characters. It almost felt deliberate.
The portrayal of the characters isn't the only tonal aspect I personally disliked. The score, the very weird looking color palette, the uncanny cgi, ect.
Look I'm still a big fan of Gunn. I loved the start of the DCU with Creature Commandos and am looking forward to Season 2. But his take on Superman is just not one I jive with personally.

This isn't just a reboot-it's a full-on resurrection of everything we love about Superman! James Gunn nails the tone: emotional, bold, and full of hope. David Corenswet owns the cape-he's charming, powerful, and finally gives us a Superman we can believe in. Rachel Brosnahan kills it as Lois Lane with wit and fire. The action is epic, the visuals are stunning, and the story hits the heart. Sure, the CGI finale gets a bit wild, but who cares? This movie flies high and brings the DC Universe back to life. A must-watch for any superhero fan! Can't wait to see where this universe goes next-this is just the beginning.
Superman, the super hero, the super human...
The film show us a new version of Superman where we can see the most human side of him. It's a great comeback! James Gunn again manages to bring an epic and emotional film.
She is fun, emotional, visually attractive and direct, not bothering to present too much of the known. And Lex Luthor is a real villain, perhaps until now the one I liked most of the adapted movies in recent years.
I think it's the most human Superman we've seen so far and promises to bring a new DC universe that is attractive and not so dark.
Now it remains to see what fans and the public think and how they receive it.

With the new DC franchise, James Gunn starts it with his take on the Man of Steel himself. This film is not just for current fans or fans from the start, it also speaks to everyone. This is the Superman film that we might not have asked but it is definitely what we needed. This does not just focus on the superhero genre. It's a roller-coaster action packed yet it has the emotion and heart of a superhero story. It does not just showed Superman that he is invincible. It also showed his weaknesses, yet he still shows that he is a man of hope.
The film also did not waste other characters. Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, the Justice Gang played important parts. Hoult's performance was Lex Luthor was insane! The Fortress of Solitude was also not sidelined. And there's Krypto! Man Krypto definitely stole the show! Brosnahan's Lois Lane was really well executed and Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman was really amazing!
The film also had its surprises but overall, it is very well made. James Gunn, you outdid yourself again this time! Thank you for bringing this to life. Probably the best film this year so far! A definite worth the watch!

- TriviaNathan Fillion insisted that Guy Gardner sport the same bowl cut he does in the comics.
- GoofsSuperman's fortress is mentioned in the film to be in Antarctica. But in Metropolis, presumably in the northern hemisphere, it appears to be summertime, and at that time of year, it is perpetual night in Antarctica.
- Crazy creditsThere is a scene in the closing credits of Superman and Krypto on the moon.
- Alternate versionsIn India, the film was censored in order to achieve the U/A 13+ classification. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked the studio to delete the foul words wherever they were mouthed. An eight-second shot involving a 'foul gesture' was asked to be removed. It was replaced by a two-second shot. Lastly, the CBFC's members deleted a 'sensual visual' lasting 33 seconds and spread across two scenes.
