4th Update Sunday Am Writethru: Disney’s Snow White is coming in lighter for the weekend with $43M domestic and an $87.3M global start. Not a happy ending for this $270M production, which was impacted by the actors strike, Covid breakout, a set fire and more.
They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but clearly in the case of Snow White there was. Disney has been put through the ringer before on controversial theatrical releases — i.e. Solo: A Star Wars Story and its swapping of directors from Lord & Miller to Ron Howard, which deep-sixed that movie to a very less than $1 billion global take of $393M worldwide. It’s why Disney muzzles talent on slipping any kind of information on a movie months in advance, particularly on Star Wars and Marvel movies. The concern is that if starts tease too much, or go off book, it...

The MCU movie Captain America: Brave New World is reaping the benefits of Snow White’s mediocre welcome at the box office in North America. This is, in turn, helping it surpass Black Adam’s worldwide haul. It is not the brightest star in the MCU but is still trying to earn some profit until it is in the theatres. Keep scrolling for the deets.
Captain America 4 was expected to suffer after the release of Snow White, but due to the mixed word-of-mouth, the MCU movie has less to worry about. Although Anthony Mackie has been lauded for taking up the mantle of Cap after Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, the film’s shallow narration is hampering the collections. Critics have given Snow White a lukewarm reception. The film currently holds a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 177 reviews. While some critics praised Zegler’s performance and the film’s stunning visuals, others expressed disappointment over changes to the classic story. Many feel that the film strays too far from the beloved 1937 animated version.
Perhaps the most surprising reaction comes from CinemaScore, which surveys moviegoers on opening night. Snow White received a B+, marking the lowest CinemaScore ever for a Disney live-action remake.
Previous adaptations have typically fared better: The Little Mermaid (2023) received an A, Aladdin (2019) scored an A, and Beauty and the Beast (2017) earned an A as well. Even The Lion King...

Ellen Pompeo’s time on Grey’s Anatomy was filled with intense drama, both on and off-screen. Filming Turned Into A Real-Life Nightmare
During an episode of Call Her Daddy, Pompeo revisited the uncomfortable experience of filming a love scene with co-star T.R. Knight, who played George O’Malley. Their characters’ ill-fated hookup was meant to be a messy rebound for Meredith Grey, but it was an emotional disaster behind the scenes.
On filming the scene, Ellen Pompeo admitted: “Can I tell you an inside story about that? T.R. and I are such good friends and we had to do a love scene,...

It was another recovery year for Hollywood following the dual strikes that affected the film pipeline just a few years after the Covid pandemic hit. The global box office dropped 10 percent to $30.5 billion last year but it wasn’t bad news for everyone. In a mixed year for the industry, the film divisions of some legacy entertainment conglomerates actually posted profit growth for the calendar year 2024, while others recorded drops.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual studio profit report includes an educative look at Disney, even though it doesn’t report figures for its filmed entertainment operations. (THR is instead looking at its “content sales/licensing and other” financials).
Also keep in mind that financial disclosures for Hollywood studios remain limited and are not easily comparable. (For instance, Sony’s pictures segment includes TV networks.) THR crunched figures for the calendar years 2024 and 2023, even though Disney and Sony have fiscal years...

Netflix has ordered a new reality competition series inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The series, The Golden Ticket, will combine elements of strategy, adventure and social dynamics, as contestants seek to gain entry to a “retro-futuristic” chocolate factory (via a golden ticket, of course) and then try to make it through all the challenges they will encounter.
Eureka Productions (The Mole, Dating Around, TwentySomethings Austin) is producing the series for Netflix.
The show will be the first project inspired by the world of Willy Wonka since Netflix acquired the Dahl intellectual property in 2021. Dahl’s other books include Matilda, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, and The Bfg, among many others. Until now, however, the streamer had not adapted arguably his most famous work for any film or TV projects (Warner Bros. released a Wonka film in 2023 that pre-dated the Netflix...

A new reality show called The Golden Ticket is heading to Netflix. It’s inspired by the wild and colorful world of Wonka from Roald Dahl’s 1964 book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Contestants will compete in a strange, exciting setting, but first, they need to snag a golden ticket to get in. Once inside, they’ll face challenges and games that test their smarts, toughness, and ability to handle a crazy, old-school yet futuristic environment.
Netflix hasn’t said yet where the show will be filmed or when it will premiere. For now, people who want to join have to wait for more details. To apply, you need to be at least 18 and a legal U.S. resident. There’s a link online to start the process, but other rules might apply too.

Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about the decision not to use an intimacy coordinator while filming sex scenes with Timothée Chalamet in A24's Marty Supreme, a ping-pong movie that is directed by Josh Safdie. The Oscar-winning actress told Vanity Fair that there is "a lot of sex" in the seemingly steamy sports movie, but having acted out intimate scenes many times during her long and successful career in the industry, she didn't feel the need for extra assistance when it came to getting physical with her co-star. She admitted that she would feel "stifled" by the input.
"We said, 'I think we're good. You can step a little bit back. I don't know how it is for kids who are starting out, but… if someone is like, 'Okay, and then he's going to put his hand here.' I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that."

After filing for bankruptcy this week, Village Roadshow’s vast collection of films – from The Matrix to Wonka – will be sold to the highest bidder.
Just yesterday we covered the rather sombre news that Village Roadshow had filed for bankruptcy after losing a legal war of attrition with Warner Bros studio over the latter’s decision to release The Matrix Resurrections straight onto its streaming platform back in 2021 in the wake of the global pandemic.
Despite being a decades-long producing and financing partner of Warner Bros, that long and fruitful relationship (stretching back to 1999 and the first instalment of The Matrix) wasn’t enough to convince Warner Bros to reconsider its decision and the studio’s entire 2021 slate of films was placed directly onto Max, earning the significant displeasure of other creative partners in the process.

Village Roadshow has officially filed for bankruptcy. Village Roadshow Entertainment Group is a production company whose film division, Village Roadshow Pictures, was founded in 1989. The Australian media company Village Roadshow also holds a 3% stake in the company. The American producer's first ever film was The Delinquents, a 1989 release that was distributed by Warner Bros. Since then, the company has gone on to produce major films including The Matrix, Miss Congeniality, Zoolander, Ocean's Eleven, Happy Feet, Joker, and more recently, Wonka.
Per Variety, Village Roadshow has now filed for bankruptcy. The company officially filed for Company 11 in Delaware on Monday, March 17. Court documents cite $223.8 million in asset-backed secured notes and $163.1 million in senior secured debt. Legal tussles with Warner Bros over The Matrix Resurrections have led to production company Village Roadshow filing for bankruptcy.
Here’s some sobering news this morning that comes courtesy of Variety: Village Roadshow has filed for bankruptcy in the United States.
The long-time partner of Warner Bros has co-produced and co-financed some incredible films, beginning in 1999 with The Matrix and spanning some 90 titles including 2019’s Joker and 2023’s Wonka. The long-running partnership between the two companies broke down in the wake of the global pandemic when Warner Bros elected to place its entire 2021 slate onto its Max streaming platform.
The move didn’t just anger directors such as Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan (the move led to Nolan’s departure from the studio) but also Warner Bros’ business partners. Legendary Entertainment reportedly mooted a permanent split from Warner Bros, while Village Roadshow ended up taking its disagreement with the studio to the courtroom.

These days, it seems like all anyone can talk about in Hollywood are "nepo babies." Originating in the early 2020s, "nepo baby" describes individuals whose success can be attributed to a parent or relative's previous success in the same industry due to nepotism. Plenty of celebrities have achieved accolades without fans knowing about their famously talented families. Some of the most iconic A-listers in film and TV owe their successes to extreme privilege, such as people like Ben Stiller, or Zoë Kravitz.
Most of the time, nepo babies are forced to wear their privilege on their sleeves just by virtue of their names, as Allison Williams (daughter of former NBC anchor Brian Williams) told Wired, "It doesn't feel like a loss to admit it ... If you trust your own skill, I think it becomes very simple to acknowledge." Others, like Jamie Lee Curtis, have spoken out against the ridicule towards nepotism babies in pop culture.

The premiere of Disney’s live-action Snow White has brought even more problems to the door of the latest reimagined movie from the Disney vault. Taking its premise from the original 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the film has been marred by controversy from the casting of Rachel Zegler in the titular role and both her and costar Gal Gadot’s opposing political opinions on the Israel-Gaza war. However, another huge point of contention has been the way Disney has handled the movie’s seven little people – which has led to a number of actors with dwarfism protesting at the premiere.
Disney’s attempt to remake Snow White has not been a smooth one, and the subject of its seven central characters has been a particularly divisive one. While appearing at the premiere of the movie, actress Ali Chapman – who has dwarfism – slammed the decision of Disney...

After punching above his weight in the Indie landscape, in recent years, Timothée Chalamet has become the face of one of the most acclaimed action IPs of the modern era, Dune. With movie awards season over, and rumors that Adrian Brody’s Oscar acceptance speech is finally coming to an end, the year 2025 sees a surprising amount of faces coming straight back into the conversation. For one, Zoe Saldaña will be putting her Supporting Actress Oscar to good use on the publicity trail for one of the biggest tentpoles of the year: James Cameron’s Fire and Ash, the third in the Avatar series, in which she reprises her role as Na’vi princess Neytiri.
It doesn’t seem especially likely that lightning will strike twice for Saldaña, but the win will bring extra gravitas to the franchise, which secured four nominations (including Best Picture) last time. Fire and Ash hits cinemas in the middle of December, usually a risky strategy, awards-wise — think Wonka, Nosferatu and even A Complete Unknown — but Cameron has good form on this front, and, presumably for...

Wicked Japan Box Office: Beats Wonka (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Wicked was released in Japan after a long wait of five months, and it won two Academy Awards in the meantime. Therefore, the film has received a boost as it was released in Japan. It opened at the top but was dethroned by the local movie Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales. The film has surpassed Wonka’s opening to achieve a fantastic feat.
When it was released, the musical fantasy starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande showed a spectacular performance at the box office in North America and worldwide. It maintained a favorable momentum and soon became the highest-grossing musical adaptation of a stage musical, surpassing Mamma Mia! It also outperformed Ridley Scott’s Biggie Gladiator II, which was released on the same day as this musical fantasy in the US. The film’s glorious worldwide collection has made it...

It may be hard for folks who weren't around at the time to understand, but there was a moment when Hugh Grant appeared poised to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.
Flashback to the spring of 1994. Bill Clinton was a popular U.S. President, everyone was drinking Zima, and moviegoers were flocking to cineplexes to see the British rom-com "Four Weddings and a Funeral." It was a surprise hit that picked up word-of-mouth steam via a slow roll-out from its distributor Gramercy Pictures, which was fortunate to have a great, immensely appealing film at a time when theaters were being inundated with dreck like "Major League II," "Cops and Robbersons" and "D2: The Mighty Ducks."
While "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is at heart an ensemble comedy, Grant's endearingly flappable demeanor and effortless delivery of the film's hilariously quippy dialogue had some critics comparing him to Hollywood's greatest Grant.

As most schoolchildren know, the novels of Roald Dahl are whimsical, delightful, and full of spite. Dahl's stories were rarely sentimental screeds about the magic of childhood, angling instead to describe how horrible kids have it. In most of Dahl's novels, adults are depicted as horrid and abusive, screaming at children and often physically harming them, all while the children live in poverty and destitution. Kids are only free once they stand up to the evil adults in their lives and find a way out of their miserable, Dickensian surroundings.
The films based on the works of Roald Dahl rarely capture the author's impeccable sense of childhood misery. The films, often made by American studios, tend to skew more traditionally "Hollywood," giving them happier endings, more action-packed scenes, and fewer moments of gentle, unusual whimsy. Naturally, Dahl disliked the films based on his books, mostly stemming from his overwhelming...

Death of a Unicorn, the latest release from acclaimed distributor A24, has a simple if/then premise – what if unicorns were real? What if their biology held the cure to every human ailment? This is then mined for solid laughs and moments of over-the-top gore. In terms of sociopolitical horror comedies, you could do much better (Get Out) or worse (Don't Look Up) than director Alex Scharfman's feature debut, a fine way to spend an hour and 44 minutes – though the experience might be more enjoyable with a slightly shorter runtime.
Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega head up Death of a Unicorn's impressive ensemble cast as Elliot and Ridley, a lawyer and his teen daughter who travel to a wealthy pharmaceutical CEO's retreat to finalize Elliot's promotion. The pair have become emotionally estranged following the death of Ridley's mom, which has driven Elliot to become more obsessive about his career.

After both of Timothée Chalamet’s last two movies, Wonka and Dune: Part Two, grossed over $600 million at the global box office, most fans were expecting A Complete Unknown to find major box office success, even if not in the same realm as his recent pictures. At the time of writing, the Bob Dylan biopic has grossed $73 million at the domestic box office and $46 million internationally, reaching a worldwide total of $120 million. This comes days after A Complete Unknown failed to bring home a single Academy Award despite showing up with eight nominations. Still playing in close to 1,000 theaters everywhere, the film has not received the same bump this week as Best Picture winner Anora, which jumped more than 800% from last week.

A Complete Unknown allowed Timothée Chalamet to get into the Best Actor race at the Academy Awards. However, it seemed like it was not in the cards for the actor, as Adrien Brody ended nabbing the Award for his work in The Brutalist. However, the coming year might be another change for Chalamet, as A24’s offering with the actor in the lead role is definitely going to receive an intensive Oscar campaign of its own.

Warner Bros.’ latest high-budget release, Mickey 17, has arrived in theaters, marking the return of Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho. Starring Robert Pattinson in a multi-faceted role, the sci-fi film has received a positive critical reception. However, its financial prospects remain uncertain, with early projections suggesting a slow start compared to its $118 million budget.
Bong Joon-ho’s Hollywood Return
Five years after Parasite became the first non-English language film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, Bong has returned with a film adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7. Bong Joon-ho’s Hollywood Return
Five years after Parasite became the first non-English language film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, Bong has returned with a film adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7. The story follows an expendable worker who is repeatedly regenerated to assist in colonizing an inhospitable planet. Complications arise when one version of the character refuses to disappear after being replaced.

Five years after making history with his Oscar triumph for “Parasite,” Bong Joon-ho has returned to Hollywood filmmaking with Warner Bros.’ “Mickey 17,” a star-studded sci-fi satire about how capitalism can create demagogues and cheapen human life.
But despite strong reviews, it faces an uphill battle to turn a profit against its reported $118 million budget. While not an original film — it is an adaptation of the 2022 Edward Ashton novel “Mickey 7” — it’s a film trying to win over adult audiences with a marketing campaign based around its darkly humorous concept and a go-for-broke lead performance by Robert Pattinson.
While not as acclaimed as “Parasite,” reviews for “Mickey 17” have been very positive, currently standing at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has also earned a $9 million 4-day opening weekend in Bong’s home country of South Korea, the best for a Warner release in six years.

From The Shining to It's a Wonderful Life, many of the most influential films in history were savaged by critics upon their release. These films prove that bad reviews alone don't mean a movie is destined for doom. In fact, sometimes critics can entirely miss the point of a film or overlook its most charming aspects.
In the early 2000s, franchise films had yet to establish their stranglehold on Hollywood, and theaters were filled with countless original and unusual movies. Whether it was rom-coms or action blockbusters, the aughts had a fun and light style that was often overlooked by the critics. And many films that were not exactly Oscar-worthy, nonetheless helped define the era, being fondly remembered by their fans decades later.

Timotheé Chalamet has been offered the title part in Disney’s Ichabod, a live-action take on Washington Irving’s The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow.
Timotheé Chalamet may have missed out on his first Oscar win last night, but the actor has reportedly been offered the lead role in Disney’s next big live action project: a reimagining of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, a story that already boasts a couple of notable cinematic interpretations.
Disney has already adapted the story once before in the 1949 animated anthology feature, The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr Toad. However, Paramount’s 1999 live action version of the tale is the one that most film fans will remember. Directed by Tim Burton, it remains a deliciously Gothic treat.
Johnny Depp played the role of Ichabod Crane in Burton’s film, it’s easy to see how Chalamet could fit the part, with the title suggesting that...
