Westerns have always worked uncommonly well with ghost stories, which occupy a small part of their ethos and can be readily used to serve story needs. Crossovers aren't entirely common, but have produced some striking movies and TV shows. They run the gamut from bloody updates of traditional Westerns like Bone Tomahawk to wilder genre mash-ups like From Dusk Til Dawn, and while the best of them tend to be modern, the roots of Western horror stretch back to the pulp days.
It should come as no surprise that one of the best old-school examples of Western horror came with Rod Serling's classic seriesThe Twilight Zone. Cowboys were all the rage when the series first premiered, and multiple episodes used Western tropes as the jumping-off point for their various spooky premises. One of them -- Season 3, Episode 7, "The Grave" -- is as good as anything The Twilight Zone has ever produced.

John Wayne still ranks among today’s most popular movie stars, even though he died in 1979 at the age of 72. In a legendary screen acting career that encompasses more than 140 feature film roles and spans 50 years, Wayne was listed by movie theater owners as being among Hollywood’s 10 most bankable stars for 25 years between 1949 and 1974, the longest run of any star in history, followed by Clint Eastwood at 21, and Tom Cruise at 20.
Wayne still holds great influence in pop culture, especially the Western genre, which he redefined so completely throughout his career that he essentially became the genre. While Wayne’s Western masterpieces hold timeless appeal, several of his initially underappreciated Western films have received increasing appreciation over the past 40 years. One of these is the 1972 Western film The Cowboys, in which Wayne plays Wil Andersen, an aging rancher who is forced to seek the help of a group of...

Legend and mythmaking are the backbone of the Western genre. As the classic John Ford Western, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance once emphasized, "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." If this sentiment serves as the epigraph to the genre, then the mascot of legend-making would undeniably be one of the stars of Liberty Valance and a countless number of Westerns, John Wayne. Symbolizing the ideal American patriot, Wayne's films and screen presence are still revered today, but his earnest and simplistic approach to portraying morally complex cowboys and law enforcement figures is pastiche. While his films with Ford and Howard Hawks were often probing and revisionist, Wayne, partially due to his outspoken nationalist political views, feels rooted in fantasy. However, there is one Western of his, The Cowboys, described as one of the most accurate portraits of the Wild West.

The following contains spoilers for Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 12, "Counting Coup," which premiered Sunday, December 1 on Paramount Network.
The cowboy life isn't a safe one, especially on Yellowstone. Every season takes a life, whether good or bad, on the modern Western series based in Montana, but Season 5 has racked up the casualties. First, it was John Dutton, who was assassinated in a plot orchestrated by Sarah Atwood. Then it was Sarah Atwood herself, who received a taste of her own medicine in Season 5, Episode 11. Now it's Colby Mayfield, one of the longest standing cowboys that's been a part of the Yellowstone ranch since Season 1.
What hurts the most about Colby's shocking death in Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 12, is that he's the least deserving of it. John and Sarah had plenty of blood on their hands by the time of their deaths, making their endings a karmic resolution to their arcs. While Colby definitely committed questionable actions,...

Since the dawn of Hollywood, Westerns have been some of the most acclaimed, respected, and best-written stories in Hollywood, from classics like High Noon to modern hits like Django Unchained. Focusing on everything from sheriffs and bounty hunters to outlaws and even ghosts, the genre has one of the best-defined formulas in film. From beloved tropes to repetitive clichs, the Old West still knows how to please audiences.
While the use of the Western formula can sometimes make even the best movies feel predictable, some things happen so often that they're expected as part of the experience. Although some movies master these tropes better than others, audiences still enjoy seeing them all the same. From locations to character motivations, the Wild West wouldn't be what it is without certain ingredients keeping it familiar.

If Bethesda games, like Starfield, are known for anything other than their massive worlds, it would be their modding communities. Thanks to the Creation Kit modding tool that has been supplied with most of Bethesda's projects, very few titles have had the capacity for modding that the company's games do. The capacity for modding is so great that these mods have even made it to consoles, with Starfield supporting player-made content for the Xbox Series X/S.
Mods can greatly change the experience of a game. Provided that mod authors have made it, anything can be added to a game, from lightsabers to replacing dragons with Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends in Skyrim. Starfield is no exception, and many of the most popular mods for Xbox objectively improve the gaming experience. These can include bug fixes, AI improvements, and new skills.

While John Wayne had success in several film genres, including romantic dramas and war films, Wayne is, of course, best remembered for his unsurpassed dominance in the Western genre, in which Wayne won his only Academy Award for his performance in the 1969 Western True Grit.
One of Waynes last great Western films is the 1972 Western The Cowboys, in which he plays Wil Andersen, an aging rancher who is forced to seek the help of a group of schoolboys to help Andersen execute a 400-mile cattle drive. Through this relationship, The Cowboys provides a sweet mixture of adventure and drama, as Andersen becomes a mentor to the boys, who gain an appreciation and understanding of cowboy life.
However, The Cowboys is best remembered for Waynes shocking death scene. While Wayne died on screen in several films, the sadistic nature of Waynes death scene in The Cowboys cast a pall over the film,...

Daniel Craig is best known for his role as Agent 007 in the James Bond films. The actor was reportedly happy to exit the role and has since starred in Knives Out and will be seen in the upcoming Queer.
However, one film reportedly trumped his horror at playing Bond repeatedly. The actor spoke about the early scenes that director David Fincher showed from their collaboration The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Rockstar's modern masterpiece, Red Dead Redemption 2, does not shy away from tragedy. Historically accurate to an almost painful degree, Red Dead Redemption 2 depicts the the full harshness of the American West. Despite being romanticized by popular fiction, the 19th century's American West was a brutal place to live, with death ever present. This uncomfortable truth comes across no more clearly than with Arthur Morgan, whose tragic fate mirrors that of an iconic real-world outlaw.
[Warning: Spoilers for Red Dead Redemption 2's story.]Over the course of Read Dead Redemption 2, Arthur does, as the name implies, find redemption, and comes to see the inherent beauty of the world, but his heroic journey costs him his life. Near the beginning of the game, Arthur contracts tuberculosis and slowly dies, becoming more and more sickly as the game progresses. By RDR2's end, Arthur is a shell of his formal muscular self, with sunken, red eyes and an emaciated frame.

The late Cormac McCarthy wrote twelve acclaimed and legendary novels, but surprisingly, only five of them have ever managed to make their way into film adaptations. Out of those select five, however, by far the most memorable and well-regarded of them has undoubtedly been the Coen Brothers' 2006 adaptation of No Country For Old Men. Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" (both 2008) in many important ways weren't yet part of the then-nascent Marvel Cinematic Universe when they were first made. Favreau put in a post-credits stinger with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury more as a wink to fans than as an announcement that larger film projects were afoot. Additionally, Downey's cameo in "Incredible" was treated equally casually, with the actors reportedly improvising their dialogue. It would only be until after Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009 that plans for an MCU would be put into place in earnest. In many ways, then, it would be Favreau's "Iron Man 2" in 2010 that launched the MCU properly and put plans for an "Avengers" feature film into motion.

Modern Westerns have reinvented the genre by doing away with harmful stereotypes and incorporating other genres like sci-fi and comedy. Movies like Cowboys & Aliens and Rango have combined the Old West with elements like aliens and anthropomorphic animals, adding a unique twist to the genre. Films like No Country for Old Men and Django Unchained have modernized the Western genre by incorporating crime and revenge storylines, creating compelling and gritty narratives.
Westerns have been around for over a century, yet many movies over the last few decades have reinvented the genre. The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903, is considered the start of the Western film genre. Since then, hundreds of different Westerns have graced the screen and many, like Unforgiven, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and Cimarron, have won major awards.

This game should be more hyped, with both team neck and neck in the NFC East standings and looking to make a push toward the NFL playoffs in the second half of the season. Instead, you have a Dallas Cowboys team that is about where you would think they should be, in second place in the division. Then you have the New York Giants, whose season has been very forgettable to everyone associated with it. The Cowboys are big favorites at home, and this one could get ugly for the Giants quickly.

Roseland NYC Live was originally released on November 2nd, 1998, and featured Portishead backed by a 28-piece orchestra. The reissue adds three tracks previously only available in the concert film: “Undenied,” “Numb,” and “Western Eyes.” It also includes the original performances of “Sour Times” and “Roads” at the now-defunct New York City venue Roseland.
“I can’t believe it’s 25 years since Roseland,” vocalist Beth Gibbons wrote on Instagram. “It was such a scary but exciting time for me. It was the first time we had played our new tracks since Dummy and knowing it was being recorded meant I didn’t sleep much in the nights before.”
Guitarist Adrian Utley added, “I have really good memories of this show which we played before our second album was released.

The Predator franchise has roared back in a big way with the release of Prey. The latest entry in the Predator film series arrived on Hulu to great critical acclaim, with many highlighting the simple yet genius pitch of the movie. The Predator movie formula is very simple: Predator hunts something in a specific location. It has been elite commandos in the jungle in Predator, crime in Los Angeles in Predator 2, xenomorphs in two different Alien vs. Predator films, or various killers on a Predator planet in Predators.
Prey updates the formula, not only changing the what but also the when now focusing on a Comanche warrior in 1719. This might seem small, but it is a great way to breathe new life into the Predator franchise. Prey showcases a different time period, so both the Predator and its prey have different weapons, while the film also highlights a culture...

The tiny city of Dalton, Georgia, has left a large footprint in the daily lives of millions who most wouldn’t have stopped for a second to consider. Well, it’s probably more appropriate to say that millions have left large footprints in Dalton’s biggest export: this city is the “Carpet Capital of the World.” With 85% of carpets in the USA having been made there, the industry’s made it one of America’s most prosperous locations for several decades. It shouldn’t be a surprise that many an entrepreneur have attempted to establish themselves there, though that easy entry point into the American Dream has become more complicated in recent years––something made abundantly clear in Carpet Cowboys, the feature directorial debut of documentarians Emily MacKenzie and Noah Collier.

The channel covers so much from the ’80s and ’90s but the truth is, there’s more horror floating around now than ever before. With the rise of horror studios like Blumhouse or prestige studios like A24 realizing that horror can not only be profitable but award worthy, the theaters have no shortage of scary. That’s not even including streaming services like Tubi, Shudder, and even the big 4 going all in on either producing or showcasing horror on their platforms. A lot of these end up being successful but some of them flounder a bit, even when they deserve to soar. Today’s movie has good names in front of and behind the camera,...

Harrison Ford is one of the most recognizable faces in the film industry, with a 5-decade long box office streak that has kept him on Hollywood's A-list. From Star Wars to Indiana Jones and Patriot Games, Ford has starred in movies that have defined every decade since his career started in the '60s. While he's mostly known as an action star thanks to blockbusters like The Fugitive and Air Force One, Ford has done just about every genre, from romantic dramas like Sabrina and crime thrillers like Witness to ensemble comedies like Morning Glory and Westerns like Cowboys & Aliens.
As Ford prepares to head off on his final adventure as Indiana Jones, one of his most beloved characters, with James Mangold's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to keep his streak alive. On the other side of 80, Ford...

When Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) saw the T. rex appear out of nowhere and attack a Gallimimus, he told Tim and Lex that they’d “never look at birds the same way again.” What Jurassic Park was arguing at the time — in that hoary old age when blockbusters argued — was the relatively recent theory that theropods share a closer lineage with birds than lizards. Up until that point, the popular image of the dinosaur was largely rendered by artist Charles R. Knight, whose upright, tail-dragging Tyrannosaurus and swamp-based Brontosaurus were borrowed for The Lost World (1925) and King Kong (1933). As movie monsters, they were brought to life by Willis O’Brien, the Oscar-winning effects pioneer who invented stop-motion animation. One of his movie ideas, Emilio and Guloso, alternatively The Valley of the Mist, was completed in 1969 by his protégé Ray Harryhausen and director Jim O'Connolly as The Valley of Gwangi. Bearing...

While the golden age of Westerns may be long over, the cowboys and gunslingers that the genre popularized live on as some of the most enduring characters in film. Cowboys are still screen icons today as TV shows like Yellowstone and Justified harken back to the days of the Old West. Even though cowboy movies exist as a niche category today, the best Westerns are still regarded as some of the greatest movies of all time.

With the Sam Raimi-produced 65 now playing in theaters, genre fans are getting something we’ve been craving for years – a big budget dinosaur thriller Not part of the Jurassic Park franchise. The film’s premise of an astronaut crash landing on Earth during the age of the dinosaurs sounds exactly like something that would have hit theaters and drive-ins back in the 60s and 70s when a healthy stream of dinosaur themed B-movie fare was released.
65 seems like a perfect genre mash-up of sci-fi and survival horror. Back in 1969, another genre hybrid about dinosaurs was set loose – The Valley of Gwangi. The hook? Cowboys vs. dinosaurs. Hell, if the movie came out today I guarantee that Cowboys vs. Dinosaurs would be the title.

When we next see Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’ll have a new gig, and it’s a mighty impressive one. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with Entertainment Weekly about all things Marvel earlier today, and while talking about Captain America: New World Order, he mentioned that Ross will be the President of the United States in the movie.
“This is certainly a big part for Thaddeus Ross,” Kevin Feige said. “He’s the president of the United States in the film. And with Harrison, you think about Air Force One, and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in Clear and Present Danger. There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.
