Sony Pictures announced Friday that the Marvel superhero’s next feature is now set for theatrical release on July 31, 2026, a week later than previously scheduled. Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is helming the movie that is currently untitled.

This change gives the project extra distance from the release of director Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which also stars Holland and hits theaters July 17, 2026. Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron round out the star-studded cast for Universal’s feature adaptation of Homer’s epic poem.

Also currently set for release on July 31, 2026, is Paramount’s animated feature Paw Patrol 3.

Let's cut to the chase: "Captain America: Brave New World" is bad. The story is paper-thin, the action is repetitive and too reminiscent of previous "Captain America" movies, and the villain's plot is uninspired. The scrutiny around the new entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues. Anthony Mackie made his debut in his first standalone film, Captain America: Brave New World, taking over the shield from Chris Evans' Steve Rogers as Captain America.

The new movie, which is the first out of three MCU movies to premiere this year, had a lukewarm reception. Although the film was under scrutiny and received negative reviews from critics, it has also received more than passable scores from the audience and exceeded expectations at the box office. At the same time, Forbes reports Captain America: Brave New World has set an unfortunate Cinemascore record for the MCU.

Spider-Man: Far From Home featured one of the McU's most jaw-dropping post-credits scenes when it introduced us to Earth-616's J. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man trilogy star J.K. Simmons reprised the role, with a version of the Spidey-hating hothead who, in this reality, is in charge of TheDailyBugle.net.

The shock jock proceeded to reveal Spider-Man's secret identity to the world and continued to badger Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Rumours persist about the direction Spider-Man 4 will head in, but one of the most popular suggestions is the Spidey-obsessed Jameson outfitting the Scorpion with the tech needed to take down the vigilante.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Simmons was asked about his MCU future and whether he'll reprise arguably his most iconic role in the hero's 2026 return.

Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters this week. The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie formally introduces Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as the new Captain America, taking over from the retired Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Wilson first picked up the shield in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but this is his first outing as Captain America on the big screen.

The film is directed by Julius Onah and written by the teams of Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, and Onah and Peter Glanz. "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" episode 7, "Scorpion Rising," sees Peter Parker (Hudson Thames) facing his greatest challenge yet -- and nearly losing his life to it. Once upon a time, about six years ago, superheroes were the biggest thing in cinemas. In 2019, no less than three superhero movies made over a billion dollars at the box office: Captain Marvel, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Avengers: Endgame, which also happens to be the second highest-grossing movie of all time. If you throw Joker in there, it's four. Surely the good times would roll forever.

But they didn't. The sequel to Captain Marvel, The Marvels, came out a few years later and became Marvel's first box office bomb, grossing around $200 million on a budget of nearly $300 million. Major tentpole movies like Ant-Man 3 underperformed, earning less than both of its predecessors, and new heroes like Shang-Chi and the Eternals never caught fire. Things were even worse on the DC side of things. Whereas Aquaman made over $1 billion in 2018, the 2023 sequel made less than half that. It was the same story for the Shazam!

For instance, the latest batch of episodes debuted new variations of Doc Ock, Scorpion and Unicorn. Speculation has been rampant surrounding Sony Pictures' and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 4. Starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, the movie is set for release on July 24, 2026. Beyond this release date, little has been confirmed. Fans have been faced with conflicting rumors, with some suggesting that the movie will continue Spider-Man: No Way Home's exploration of the Multiverse. Others have suggested Spider-Man 4 will be a street-level story. Amy Pascal, who serves as producer of the Spider-Man franchise for Sony Pictures, recently shared the first few plot details for Spider-Man 4.

Pascal made it apparent that the movie will follow Peter Parker as he withdraws from his civilian identity and instead throws himself fully into being Spider-Man. This follows on from his decision at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home to have the world forget Peter Parker, leaving him on his own and with little left in his life besides Spider-Man.

2025 will continue to be a superhero-packed year. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will add three more films, culminating with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in the summer.

Although this is hardly the first time Marvel's First Family has been adapted into a feature film, the characters are now making their debut in the MCU. Planned to have a bigger role in the upcoming two Avengers films, The Fantastic Four: First Steps' launch has been successful. Marvel Studios unveiled the first trailer on Feb. 4, almost a year after the cast announcement, and The Hollywood Reporter revealed the trailer was a massive success, with 202 million views in its first 24 hours across all platforms.

Oh what a tangled web we weave when the multiverse becomes part of Spider-Man canon. The Spider-Man film franchise started simply enough, with 2002’s “Spider-Man.” Fast forward 20 years and three different actors have played live-action versions of the Wall Crawler, with the trio joining forces in 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

When Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios parted ways after Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony executives immediately started making plans to continue the franchise without Kevin Feige's input.

We'll likely never know what that would have entailed. However, once both sides managed to get back on good terms, the wall-crawler found himself caught up in the Multiverse with 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
