Although some characters do return from Suicide Squad (2016), events from the previous film go largely undiscussed as it focuses on a new story with additional characters. Despite this, returning characters from Suicide Squad (2016) canonically acknowledge their relationships from the previous film certifying its place in the shared DC Cinematic Universe.

Comparatively, Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and follow up Batman Returns (1992) were rebooted with Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever (1995) yet maintained canonically related to Burton's previous films with returning actors reprising their characters, and character backstories still recognized in the 1995 film. Although Batman Forever is a separate entity from the prior Batman films, it still continues the franchise simply with a new direction opposed to hitting the reset button completely.
