On Sunday, McConaughey posted a series of photos on Instagram from the 2025 Joy Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In his post, he officially nominated Anthony Hopkins for the title of People’s Sexiest Man Alive.

The writing team of Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (The D Train) penned the script for the movie that counts David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer as producers. A new promotion for Wicked turns back the clock to 2021 to show co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo reacting to being cast as the film’s co-leads by director Jon M. Chu.

The longform spot, titled “Connect to Your Dreams,” is a plug for the movie as well as distributor Universal Pictures parent Comcast’s Xfinity broadband, mobile and pay-tv services. In recent years, long-form Xfinity ads have featured a quasi-sequel to E.T., Steve Carell as a Covid-challenged Santa Claus; and an Illumination-animated spinoff of Sing 2. Usually, the promos debut just before NBC’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, but the November 22 bow for Wicked accelerated the usual timeline.

The new spot is directed by Alice Brooks, Wicked’s director of photography, in collaboration with Chu. It tells a condensed story of both lead actresses reaching for their dreams from childhood to the Wicked shoot.

This combined success is a divergence from a modern trend, as in recent years, animation has had a complicated relationship with the box office and with streaming. The theatrical success of animated releases, even from major companies such as Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, has become increasingly difficult to predict.

Now, beginning with the 2027 slate, Netflix will have U.S. rights to live-action films from both Universal Pictures and Focus Features “no later than eight months” following their theatrical release.

After the Universal films’ initial premiere on NBCU’s Peacock, Netflix will have a 10-month window during which these films are available only on Netflix — before they return to Peacock. Netflix will also license rights to Universal’s full animation and live-action film slate for additional windows in subsequent years as well as rights to select titles from Universal’s film library, the companies said.

Written by and starring Daisy Cooper and Selin Hizli, the show is a beautifully dark concoction of betrayal, female friendship, family and unfiltered honesty. Cooper and Hizli met at drama school, although their friendship didn't get off to the best start. Hizli told The Independent that Cooper compared her to Lily Allen for her arrogance. Evidently, the two got over their differences, and TV is all the better for it.

Just in time for Halloween, the crew behind animated blockbuster Sing is putting together a spooky new take on Michael Jackson’s classic song “Thriller.” In an animated short film based on Jackson’s own game-changing music video, the animal musicians are tasked with putting on another showstopper. Netflix is expanding its annual "Netflix & Chills" line-up with a brand new installment into the popular Sing universe! Starting on October 16, subscribers will be able to watch a spooky short film titled Sing: Thriller, based on Illuminations animated movies Sing and Sing 2. "Thriller" by Jackson is one of the most iconic songs of all time, so it seems like a very fitting way to reunite the Sing crew to honor a timeless pop culture moment.

Sing: Thriller, based on Michael Jackson’s short film of the same name, is headed to Netflix. In the animated Illumination short, Buster Moon, a charismatic koala played by Matthew McConaughey, and the Sing cast head to a Halloween party, after a successful performance of “Thriller” at the New Moon Theater. As the crew arrive at rock star Clay Calloway’s (Bono) Halloween bash, a multi-colored ooze has transformed the party host and his guests into dancing critters.

“Sing: Thriller,” an all-new, original short film set within the world of Illumination’s popular features – 2016’s “Sing” and 2021’s “Sing 2” — premieres on Netflix on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The press release notes that the new short is based on the original short film “Michael Jackson’s Thriller,” which was directed by John Landis and written by Jackson and Landis.
