Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets Behind the Show the Whole World Watched

8/10

A real treat for Muppet fanatics but also of interest to casual admirers

Muppet Guys Talking is less a documentary and more of a conversation between old friends. It's a delight, even though I would add the asterisk that if you aren't crazy about the Muppets and the performers it may not be worth the 10 bucks to purchase it online (you can only watch it directly through the website). This isn't to say Oz doesn't make it accessible to relative newcomers or casual fans, but know that this was made for a specific purpose (and by luck this was the last time Jerry Nelson was on camera).

And in order to keep the pace together Oz has to cut to separate interview clips, which do work and yet it cuts up the flow of the people in the room. But it's a minor knock; it's like hanging out at a house you wouldn't usually be privy to, so if you want to hear Goelz and Nelson and Brill, these wonderful performers and people running through how characters get created and how people form bonds and relationships, this is a great place more so than a film to visit.

If nothing else, it's amazing to see, in an illustration, how Henson did the Kermit Rainbow Connection number in the Muppet Movie. And how about those Don Celine explosion techniques?
