With every year comes difficult decisions for networks and streamers alike to either hold on to their series or let them go.

2025 is expected to see several beloved series coming to an end, including “Bel-Air,” “Billy the Kid” and “Power Book IV: Force,” among others. Netflix’s “The Upshaws” and “Heartbreak High” similarly have ends in sight, though it’s unknown exactly when that might be. Some of Netflix’s biggest and longest running shows are also coming to a close this year, including “Stranger Things,” “Squid Game” and “Big Mouth.”

“Saturday Night Live” has set Maya Rudolph to host its May 11 episode alongside Vampire Weekend as musical guest, while the May 18 episode will by headlined by Jake Gyllenhaal with performances from Sabrina Carpenter.

Rudolph was an “SNL” cast member for seven seasons from 2000 to 2007 and returns to the late-night sketch show for her third time as host, having previously hosted in 2012 with musical guest Sleigh Bells and in 2021 alongside Jack Harlow. Currently, she stars in and executive produces the Apple TV+ comedy “Loot.” Besides “SNL,” her prominent credits include “Bridesmaids,” “Sisters,” “The Good Place” and “Big Mouth.”

Vampire Weekend is currently touring its fifth album, “Only God Was Above Us.” May 11 will mark the band’s fourth appearance on “SNL.” Their previous albums include “Vampire Weekend,” “Contra,” “Modern Vampires of the City” and “Father of the Bride.”

Pain Hustlers and new seasons of Big Mouth and Elite are among the high-profile new projects debuting on Netflix in October.

Directed by David Yates, Pain Hustlers is a crime drama set in the world of pharmaceuticals. The film, which boasts a starry cast that includes Emily Blunt, Chris Evans and Andy García, debuts on Oct. 27.

On Oct. 20, Netflix launches the seventh season of Big Mouth. The penultimate season of the animated comedy heads to high school but the awkward moments and growing pains for Andrew Glouberman (John Mulaney) and Nick Birch (Nick Kroll) continue.

Also on Oct. 20, the seventh season of global hit Elite hits Netflix. There’s more trouble in store for the students of Las Encinas with Omar Shanaa (Omar Ayuso) back, Ivan (André Lamoglia) mending a broken heart and Isadora (Valentina Zenere) dealing with her criminal family.

“Big Mouth” has been renewed for Season 8 at Netflix, which will be the animated comedy’s final installation. Additionally, “Big Mouth” spinoff “Human Resources” will end with its previously greenlit second season.

This makes “Big Mouth” Netflix’s longest running original series, excluding kids and family programming. Previously, “Grace and Frankie” and “Orange Is the New Black” shared that title with seven seasons each.

Inspired by the childhoods of co-creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, “Big Mouth” follows a group of friends and their hormone monsters as they navigate adolescence, human sexuality and coming of age. Kroll starred alongside John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas and Ayo Edebiri (whose role was originally played by Jenny Slate). Season 6 debuted in 2022, while Season 7 will come in 2023 and 2024.

“Human Resources” is set in the world of the hormone monsters from “Big Mouth,” where different monsters are assigned to govern human emotions.

Teddy Ray, a budding comedian and actor who was featured in the HBO Max series “Pause with Sam Jay”, has died. He was 32.

The cause of death is not known at this time, but the tragic news comes just two weeks after he celebrated his birthday. All Def Digital, the multi-platform media company Ray collaborated with in the past, released a statement confirming the news.

Netflix has sealed a new three-year deal with Brutus Pink, which extends their relationship with the animation production company behind “Big Mouth” and its new companion series “Human Resources.” The extension will keep Brutus Pink, which is run by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, developing and producing new animated projects for Netflix through 2026.

“Brutus Pink is thrilled to be continuing at Netflix, which has been our creative home for seven years,” Levin said in a statement. “We’re hopeful this means we get to keep the ‘Con Air’ DVD that’s been sitting on Nick’s coffee table in a red envelope since 2006.”

HBO Max garnered nine nominations, followed by HBO, Amazon and Hulu (which nabbed four each). Among broadcast networks, only ABC and NBC earned nods, with two each.

GLAAD announced the nominations for its annual media awards on Wednesday, with “Schitt’s Creek,” “The Prom” and Lady Gaga among the nominees.

Streaming dominated the nominations for 2021, with films like Netflix’s “The Half of It” and Hulu’s “Happiest Season” among the film nominees and “Love, Victor,” “Dead to Me,” “Saved by the Bell” and “The Umbrella Academy” being recognized in the TV categories.

Netflix led with a total of 26 nominations, followed by HBO Max with nine. Amazon, Hulu and HBO all received four nominations, with Disney+ and PBS each receiving three. In total, streaming services account for 58 of the nominees, with cable receiving 29 and broadcast coming in at 14.

Exclusive: PEN15 co-creator and star Anna Konkle’s latest memoir The Sane One has landed at Random House in a highly competitive situation.

In the book she tells the story of growing up in a dysfunctional household, with parents who were separated but chose to remain living under the same roof on opposite sides of the house. It’s territory that Konkle has mined previously on her critically acclaimed Hulu series PEN15, for which she received an Emmy nomination for writing and won the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series.

Big Mouth, the raucous and raunchy animated comedy about the triumphs and tribulations of puberty, returned for a divisive fourth season on Netflix in 2020. While fans couldn't wait to catch up with Andrew, Nick, Jessi, Missy, and of course, their Hormone Monsters, the disjointed nature of the season left them nonplussed as well.

While there were certainly high points, like Jay and Lola's power coupling, Natalie's introduction, and Missy discovering a new aspect of her identity, the increasingly gross-out humor, ambiguous themes, and rushed storylines dramatically changed the nature of the show. Lets find out if Season 4 was the best season yet, or a stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Netflix again outstripped its competitors, with 12 Artios Award nominations, followed by HBO with eight, Hulu with six, four for Amazon Prime Video, and three for the now-defunct Quibi.

The Csa previously shared three honorees for this year’s Artios Awards. The Hoyt Bowers Award will recognize Robi Reed and Tara Rubin, the first time two recipients will be honored with the award and the Actors Fund will receive the Rosalie Joseph Humanitarian Award.

For the week of Dec. 7, the cringe comedy and mockumentary about the lives of office employees at a drab Pennsylvanian paper blasted past the mysterious Mandalorian and weirdly endearing Grogu, settling into first place in Nielsen’s Top 10 SVOD programs list. It is the seventh time “The Office” takes the gold, a record-breaker.

“The Office” was watched for an approximate total of 1.3 billion minutes that week across its 192 episodes (possibly due to Netflix users hoping to get all of their Michael Scott best moments in before the sitcom left the platform for Peacock at the end of the 2020), while “The Mandalorian” scored a total of around 1 billion minutes of viewing time. The Office, which now streams exclusively on NBCUniversal’s Peacock, gained momentum in its final days on Netflix, according to the latest U.S. streaming numbers from Nielsen.

The sitcom finished No. 1 for the period of December 7 to 13, with more than 1.2 billion minutes of streaming. It was the seventh No. 1 finish for the show since Nielsen initiated the streaming chart last summer. The rankings measure only streaming on a TV screen, and are released after a lengthy delay by agreement with the services being measured.

While Netflix once again dominated the chart, Disney’s The Mandalorian surged to the No. 2 spot as the next-to-last episode of its second season hit Disney+. The show’s finish was its best to date, with about 1 million minutes of total viewing.

Before the Big Mouth timeline, Jessi lived a life of relative happiness — she was an excellent student, never backed down from a fight, always stood her ground against the patriarchy, but most importantly, had a loving stable home. Unfortunately for her, the timing of puberty and the divorce of her parents was a coincidence too great for her to bear.

Jessi can be the harshest one of all her friends, but her ire is mostly directed at her mom for the changes she's going through within herself (which is honestly not the latter's fault). It takes time for Jessi to come around to a lot of different perspectives, but her path towards closure is not a painless one, and probably won't be for some time.

Unlike her male counterpart, Maurice, Constance Harland, better known as Connie, is a much less filthy — but equally violent — Hormone Monster. Initially introduced to help Jessi out with her puberty, she later gets assigned to Nick Birch as well, suggesting the diversity and depth of her skillset.

In Big Mouth, Connie is shown to have been around since the beginning of the world itself, along with Maury and presumably the others of her kind. Connie makes mistakes often, given the nature of her job, but there are times when her advice has been absolutely spot-on. Interestingly, she is the most balanced of all the Hormone Monsters.

As one of the two main protagonists of Big Mouth, Andrew's life is unsurprisingly a disaster — at least by teenage standards. He is one of the first characters to face the pains of puberty, and it's hard for him when all the hormones surge into his body at the same time, making him simultaneously pimpled, oily, and worst of all, perennially aroused, seemingly beyond control.

Maury doesn't help as much as hinder Andrew's social standing at school, or even his life at home, but the boy trudges onwards regardless of what fate has in store for him. But Andrew is a child, after all, so a lot of what he goes through can be too much of a burden for someone his age.

The Anxiety Mosquito in Big Mouth is Tito Taylor Thomas, and she forms the main source of stress for the eighth grade this season. She's irritating by herself, what with her eternal whining about how bad everything is and how worse it's going to get, but her partnership with Depression Kitty is truly dangerous (as Jessi learns.)

Tito grows in size according to how much influence she's having, as do the other monsters, beings, and assorted creatures in the show. The only one who has any chance of defeating this pesky thing is the Gratitoad, who is a toad as well as the embodiment of gratitude. Of course, this doesn't mean that anxiety in real life can be fixed so easily, but it's still another great representation of an inner world in this animated hit.

Netflix's Big Mouth is about middle school kids who encounter their hormones for the first time, shown through their hormone monsters. The kids, being kids, are not the smartest, although there are some smarter than others. The hormone monsters are also pretty smart, even though their goals are never pure.

Through four seasons, the kids have grown and learned, both thanks to their hormone monsters and in spite of them, while others have regressed, and at least two major characters seem stinted to never achieve any growth in their lives at all. The intelligence levels of the main Big Mouth cast ranges from completely inept to promising, at best.

Have we ever been in more need of a laugh than in 2020? Amidst a historic global pandemic, a tumultuous American political election, civil unrest, wildfires, Murder Horne… alright, you get the picture. 2020 has been the pits, man. Thankfully, this year from hell featured some bright spots on television, even if rays of sunshine were sorely lacking in reality.

If the shows on our list weren’t making us laugh, we would have been ugly-crying since March. While we were all locked in our homes, we got reacclimated with the Warner Brothers (and sister), said goodbye to BoJack Horseman, and met regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, making quarantine a bit more bearable, if only in 30 minute increments. From brand new series like How To with John Wilson, to swan songs for Den of Geek favorites like Schitt’s Creek, TV comedies in 2020 kept us cackling through the chaos.

Objectively speaking, I am a massive fan of Big Mouth and have reviewed the show since the first season in 2017. But, for those of you who have not heard of this show before, it’s an animated mature comedy about children going through puberty… Which sounds like it shouldn’t work (and at times does become uncomfortable to watch but more on that later) but it does and will have you laughing throughout! It has been over a year since the last season if this show and many people – myself included – have been eagerly waiting to see what will happen to the character in the future. Despite personal affection towards the show as a professional, if I do say so myself, I have to review the series subjectively while considering the topics it covers, comedy used and overall performance of the show, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Going into Season 4, Big Mouth fans could never have guessed that Lola, the husky-voiced scourge of junior high and Jay, the magically-inclined horndog, would become not only one of the greatest couples in the series but a power couple for the ages. What begins as a fight at the public pool, and escalates into the pair making bombs from Monster energy drinks and condoms, turns into a passionate — and violent — summer romance.

Lola and Jay dig a mud pool in his backyard, speak in a raunchy version of courtly love, and help one another cope with each other's dysfunction, but all is not witty repartee and toe-sucking. As genuine as their relationship is, insecurity, pettiness, and aggression lurk beneath it, making some aspects of their bond truly toxic.

Prior to “Big Mouth” Season 4, Lola was just another Nick Kroll to me. The crass class bully is one of at least 18 characters (!!) voiced by the series co-creator, and the whiny vocal fry he channels while playing this atypical mean girl does little to mask his typical “rich dick” schtick. Nor should it. Lola’s abrasive behavior is all the more intimidating (and hilarious) thanks to the furious baritone powering her point of view. Kroll is at one with Lola, just as he is with Maurice (the Hormone Monster) or Nick (who’s based on Kroll as a young boy).

Still, Lola rarely reached the glorious heights of those guys. She often felt like a necessary pseudo-antagonist for the show’s empathetic leads more than a flesh-and-blood child of her own (parents’) making. That is, until Season 4. Adult animated comedy “Hoops” has been canceled at Netflix after just one season, Variety has learned exclusively.

The show premiered on the streamer on Aug. 21. Per an individual with knowledge of the decision to end the series, Netflix looks at a show’s viewership versus its cost and decided not to proceed with Season 2.

Jake Johnson starred as a hot-headed, foul-mouthed high school basketball coachwho thinks turning around his god awful team will take him to the “big leagues” and turn his miserable life around.

The show also starred Ron Funches, Cleo King, Natasha Leggero, A.D. Miles, Steve Berg, Rob Riggle, and Sam Richardson. It also featured the voices of Nick Swardson, Eric Edelstein, Mary Holland, Gil Ozeri, and Max Greenfield.

Ben Hoffman created the series and served as executive producer in addition to voicing the character Time Bomb. Phil Lord and Chris Miller also executive produced along with Johnson and Seth Cohen.

What better way to start the week than with an hourlong meditation? Well, that may not be the case when interrupted by the voices of the anxious gang from Netflix’s “Big Mouth,” like Maury the Hormone Monster, Lola and Coach Steve.

Monday afternoon’s virtual “‘Big Mouth’ Misguided Meditation” kicked off with soothing tunes from bowl-like instruments. But the comforting atmosphere was quickly interrupted by hosts and “Big Mouth” voice actors Nick Kroll and Jason Mantzoukas, when Kroll said, “Just watching the person manipulate the bowls was relaxing — just to see them stoke the bowls, just to get their hands dirty on the bowl, producing those beautiful, relaxing sounds.”

“DuckTales” alum Ben Schwartz and “Big Mouth” star Ayo Edebiri are set to lend their voices to the feline and canine leads of “We Lost Our Human,” an animated Netflix interactive special from “Pinky Malinky” creators Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt.

Per the streaming service, “Audiences will choose to experience the story from the perspective of a self-involved cat (Pud) or a loving, hyperactive dog (Ham), who wake up one day to find that their human and All humans have disappeared from Earth! Desperate to find their owner, these two homebound pets venture out into the world for the first time to discover strange mysteries, meet bizarre creatures and maybe – with the audience’s help – save the universe along the way!”

Along with Schwartz as Pud and Edebiri as Ham, the cast of “We Lost Our Human” includes Adrienne C. Moore, Lauren Tom, Jon Glaser, Henry Rollins, Lucas Grabeel and Matty Cardarople.

Parks and Recreation alum Ben Schwartz and Big Mouth star Ayo Edebiri will to voice a new interactive choose-your-own-adventure special for Netflix.

The pair are set to lead the voice cast of 2D-animated special We Lost Our Human from Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt, creators of Nickelodeon and Netflix series Pinky Malinky.

It is the streamer’s latest interactive special. The company did one for the drama Black Mirror and another for comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Schwartz, who also stars in Netflix’s Space Force, voices Pud, while Edebiri, who replaced Schwartz’s onscreen Parks and Rec sister Jenny Slate as the voice of Missy in Big Mouth, voices Ham. As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. The period drama is based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance novels, where Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market.
