Exclusive: Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are scripting New Line’s remake of Grumpy Old Men. The redo has Eddie Murphy attached and Samuel L. Jackson circling, with Tim Story directing. John Davis is producing through Davis Entertainment.
In the 1993 comedy, two lifelong neighbors (Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau) who’ve been feuding since childhood find their dislike for each other exacerbated by the presence of a new neighbor who leaves each of them smitten. Ann-Margret played the neighbor, and Donald Petrie directed it.
The scribes are attached to write and direct a remake of Rookie of the Year at Fox. They most recently wrote and directed the indie Most Likely to Murder, which starred Adam Pally and Rachel Bloom and was released by Lionsgate after premiering at SXSW. Gregor and Mand were consulting producers and directors on Crazy Ex Girlfriend and also staffed on The Comedians and How I Met Your Mother.

A Rookie of the Year remake is on deck. 20th Century Fox is reportedly eyeing a new take on the 1993 kid-friendly baseball comedy about a young kid who winds up pitching in the major leagues for the Chicago Cubs. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are penning the screenplay for the remake, which Gregor intends to direct, should the project move forward and go according to plan. But there are several important factors to consider on that front.
Before digging into why this may or may not happen and how it could happen if it does happen, it sounds like this is in the pretty early stages of development. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are coming off of the indie comedy thriller Most Likely to Murder, which was featured at this year's SXSW. Similarly, the duo co-wrote that movie together with Gregor directing. That remains Gregor's only feature directorial effort, which...

“Crazy Ex Girlfriend” creator and star Rachel Bloom says her part in her new movie, “Most Likely to Murder,” was a fun role to play given how it upends how women are usually depicted on screen.
“It’s a movie in which the lead is a man and I am very much this ‘object’ that he is going after but, like, it’s cool because she’s a very unwilling object and tells him over and over, ‘F— off, you’re pathetic, you’re a piece of s—,'” she told TheWrap’s founder and editor in chief Sharon Waxman at TheWrap’s women leadership conference, Be, in March. “So it’s fun!”
“Most Likely to Murder” stars Adam Pally as a guy named Billy who comes back to his hometown expecting things to be the way it used to be.

But unfortunately for him, everything is different — even his ex, played by Bloom, has moved on to date the former high school outcast. So naturally, Billy wants to prove her new boyfriend is the killer behind a local death.
“He comes back trying to win me back and I play a character who very much isn’t buying into his bulls— anymore and — spoiler alert — never buys into it,” said Bloom, whose husband, Dan Gregor, directed the film and shares a writing credit with Doug Mand.
“[Pally] is basically like the villain of the movie and my husband and his writing partner wrote that character a little bit based on s— that I had said about guys, where it’s like guys are just expecting you to like … buy into their bulls—,” she said. “It was very fun to infuse that part with very real anger and bitterness and not putting up with that character’s bulls—.”

Bloom was a keynote speaker at this year’s Be Conference, which took place in Austin, Texas during the 2018 SXSW Film Festival.
“Most Likely to Murder” also stars Vincent Kartheiser, Billy Eichner and Didi Conn.
The film made its debut at SXSW on March 12 and was released May 1 on digital and on demand.

HollywoodChicago.com: Where did you get the idea to combine something Hitchcockian with something high school?
Dan Gregor: We knew right out of the gate that we wanted to do a coming home for the holidays’ movie. That night before Thanksgiving is such a potent little capsule of nostalgia.
Adam Pally: That weekend is very specific when you come home. Dan...

Written by two life-long friends and comedy TV veterans, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, Most Likely To Murder is a fun-enough comedy with a few laughs that never quite comes together when it matters, offering up cheap ’90s nostalgia rather than the kind of observational humor that might help it rise above the harmless type of movie designed for Netflix/VOD consumption.
Adam Pally plays Billy Green. Formerly a star in high school, he’s since moved out to Vegas, and is working his way up in the club scene. But after years, he’s only ascended to the rank of janitor despite leaving babbling voices mails for his ex, Kara (Rachel Bloom), about how well he’s doing. On his way to Long Island for his first trip since Hurricane Sandy, he ends up in the suburbs on a bender at the local Irish pub with his buddy, Duane...

There have been quite a few movies over the years that deal with the guy who peaked in high school. That's what Most Likely to Murder, which recently made its debut at SXSW, is on the surface, but there's a murder mystery to deal with beneath that helps set it apart from others that have arrived before it. While it doesn't ever venture far enough into horror territory to be truly categorized as a horror/comedy, the thriller elements, which nod to classics from directors like Alfred Hitchcock, help breathe some extra life into what would otherwise be a pretty average sketch-comedy-type funny flick.
Most Likely to Murder centers on Billy (Adam Pally), who comes back home after his parents decided to sell his childhood home and retire. Once the coolest kid in high school, he comes back to his hometown 15 years later to find he's no longer cool and...

"Ohhhh okay, right! You're the worst." Studio L has released the first trailer for an indie comedy film titled Most Likely to Murder, which is premiering at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival this month. It stars Adam Pally as Billy, the "coolest kid in high school", who comes back to his hometown 15 years later to find he's no longer cool and the girl he still has feelings for now dates the former town outcast. He becomes obsessed with proving that her new boyfriend is actually a murderer. The full cast includes Rachel Bloom, Vincent Kartheiser, Doug Mand, and John Reynolds. I'd love it if the twist in these kind of films is actually oh wait, he really is a murderer! Instead of something else. You never know? This does look fun. Catch it below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dan Gregor's Most Likely to Murder, direct from YouTube...
