Korean medical thriller “Hyper Knife” has emerged as Disney+’s most-viewed Korean premiere globally in 2025, the streamer revealed Tuesday.
The series, which debuted with two episodes on March 19, has reached this milestone less than two weeks after its launch, with the ranking based on seven days of streaming data. The Park Eunbin and Sul Kyunggu starrer has dominated viewership in the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide.
“Hyper Knife” centers on Jeong Seok (Park), a brilliant neurosurgeon whose exceptional surgical skills are matched only by her obsession with perfecting them. After uncovering a shocking revelation, Seok finds herself betrayed by her mentor and stripped of her medical license. Refusing to abandon her calling, she begins performing underground surgeries for society’s outcasts until her former mentor comes seeking her expertise.
The series presents Seok with a moral dilemma: use her talents to complete a seemingly impossible operation or exact revenge on the man who destroyed her career.

You may have studios like Ufotable, Mappa, or Toei Animation reigning at the top of the charts for making the most popular anime with insane animation and all. But how can one forget Wit Studio, which single-handedly brought Isayama’s Attack on Titan to life, and impressively, it was their first anime after the studio’s foundation!
Ever since then, Wit Studio has never disappointed fans with their classy adaptations; even their original anime series choices have been exceptionally impressive. However, beating their Attack on Titan legacy seemed impossible for a very long time until now. With the release of Netflix’s Moonrise trailer, however, things are looking really interesting!

The past few years have been delightful for One Piece fans, as a steep rise in the series’ popularity has led to the announcement of new projects. First, it was the One Piece Live-Action and now the Studio Wit remake is in production. Given all the minor and major issues with the original anime, the remake is a great development.
From the moment the official announcement was made, fans have been eagerly waiting to see a refreshing new spin on Eiichiro Oda’s storytelling. There’s a long list of positive possibilities that the remake hints at; however, there’s one concerning issue as well.

It's easy for any anime fan to find a popular new title to try, such as action series like Kaiju No. 8 or romance anime like Komi Can't Communicate, but the real fun is finding hidden gems or half-forgotten anime. Those titles feel like a fresh treat when anime fans stumble upon them on the major streaming platforms, and even if those anime were never 10/10 classics, they are still rewarding to watch after being found in remote corners of the anime world.
Some of these hidden gem anime were once fairly mainstream but have since fallen into partial obscurity with the lack of new seasons, or got overshadowed by a bigger, more popular anime of a similar genre. All of them deserve another chance at popularity, so if enough anime fans track down these half-forgotten gems and try them out, these series might re-enter the conversation, at least for a brief time.

Manga comes in all varieties. Some are deeply beloved and inspire friendship among fellow manga-lovers. Others are far more controversial with the topics they cover or how much fanservice they have. They may have questionable relationships or lean a little too heavily into violence.
No matter how good these manga may be, fans can't escape the potential judgment they may face if they read these series in public. Sometimes it's best just to read in the comfort of one's own home. It's better than facing conflict because of reading a simple manga.

Spectacular animation can truly accentuate the appeal of a romance anime, and The Magical Girl and The Evil Lieutenant Used to be Archenemies anime is the perfect example of it. There was nothing to worry about on the animation front, as the animation studio behind the anime worked on notable shows like My Hero Academia and Mob Psycho 100.

While the animation was taken care of, there was another jolting problem with the Magical Girl and Evil Lieutenant anime. It tells the story of a 15-year-old magical girl and an evil lieutenant who is in his thirties. There’s a huge age gap between the two, and seeing the duo in a romantic light feels wrong for many reasons.

Penelope Featherington is revealed as Lady Whistledown early in Bridgerton season 1, diverging from the books. The show chose to reveal Lady Whistledown earlier to resolve season 1's biggest question and pay off audience investment. The early reveal impact is seen in future seasons, with Penelope becoming more central and sympathetic to viewers.
Netflix's Bridgerton, based on the romance novels by Julia Quinn, reveals Lady Whistledowns identity much earlier than the books. Each of Quinn's eight books focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling. While all eight alphabetically named Bridgerton siblings appear in season 1 of Bridgerton, the season is primarily based on the first book in the Bridgerton series, The Duke and I, which tells the story of Daphne Bridgerton and Simon, Duke of Hastings. The Netflix show, of course, diverges from The Duke and I in several ways, but one of the biggest moments in the season isnt in the first book.
Netflix's Bridgerton, based on the romance novels by Julia Quinn, reveals Lady Whistledowns identity much earlier than the books. Each of Quinn's eight books focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling. Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
The world of “Bridgerton” is no stranger to competition. Among London’s elite, wealthy debutantes and ambitious suitors vie for attention and supremacy on every level, from status and title to the very notion of a “diamond” — the best the season has to offer. What better way to celebrate the eagerly awaited Season 3 (Part 1 now streaming and Part 2 due June 13) than by revisiting past and previous diamonds?
Now that there are fully 20 of them out in the world, we decided to rank the best “Bridgerton” episodes, and to not overly favor any one season over another. A show doesn’t become an overnight popular horny period sensation without some certified bangers (pun intended), so we revisited Seasons 1 and 2 along with Season 3 – Part 1 to pull the greatest hits.

Francesca Bridgerton's absence in seasons 1 and 2 of Bridgerton is notable, as she is rarely seen on-screen and her storylines from the books are mostly scrapped. Actress Ruby Stokes, who played Francesca in season 1, had to pull out of season 2 due to other acting commitments on another Netflix series. She has been recast with Hannah Dodd for season 3. In the Bridgerton books, Francesca marries a man named Michael Stirling and they have two children together. Fans eagerly await more of Francesca's story in season 3 and beyond.
Up until Bridgerton season 3, Francesca Bridgerton has often been absent from Netflix's period romance. Bridgerton is based on romance novels by Julia Quinn, with each book telling the love story of a different Bridgerton sibling during the Regency Era. The first book, The Duke and I, and Bridgerton season 1, follows the fourth eldest, Daphne. Bridgerton season 2 centers on the eldest, Anthony. And now, Bridgerton season...

The manga industry is a truly vast one, and even experienced manga fans have trouble deciding which series to read next. Some manga series are more rewarding for established fans of certain genres, and some series are long and complex, which can be intimidating. All that goes double for new fans who are getting into manga for the first time. Fortunately, there are some valid entry points, such as short but sweet manga series.
Unlike juggernaut franchises like One Piece and Vagabond, a large handful of great manga series tell a terrific story in a short time frame. This makes them feel more like a movie on the page than a sprawling epic. Short manga series are typically ten slim volumes in length or shorter, and some of them were released in the West as a single omnibus volume that a reader can finish in about two hours. These excellent...

Viewers are accustomed to interpreting the "hero figure" as someone with a perfect moral compass. In any version of media, a male hero figure is righteous, belongs to the good side, and does everything in his power to protect society. That's what the audience has been fed since the dawn of entertainment, and the trope followed into anime as well. Shows featuring an overly celebrated protagonist that is usually too good to be true are fan favorites, but they couldn't be farther from reality.
Fortunately, anime shows have surprisingly taken a 360-turn in addressing long-standing main hero tropes that aren't appreciated anymore. With recent hits like My Home Hero, The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting, and more, it's evident that the viewers appreciate male protagonists who have imperfections and resonate with the audience on a personal level. It's about time anime creators aim for stories featuring a hero who is not...

Japanese animation is far more compelling when the protagonist has a strongly defined and realistic emotional side, all to make them more sympathetic and justify their words and actions. This is especially true in drama and comedy anime, where a realistic character's anger, joy, sadness, or fears make them a star.

In 1993, Akira Kurosawa’s final feature, “Madadayo,” was released. Following this, he would leave the director’s chair entirely after he suffered an injury to his spine, forcing him to spend the final years of his life in a wheelchair. After decades of filmmaking, his career as a director had come to an end. Yet, he wasn’t done artistically speaking, remaining active as a screenwriter. Unfortunately, things would worsen for him in the following years as his health gradually declined, further restricting him from being artistically creative. On September 6th, 1998, Akira Kurosawa died due to a stroke. The death of the renowned filmmaker was met with international mourning. However, his legacy would continue to live on thanks to overwhelming admiration from audiences for his filmography and numerous tributes. On top of this, many who worked alongside the beloved auteur sought to honor him. One such movie...

An aspiring artist gets far more (very bloody) inspiration that he needs in the new Character trailer. Directed by Nagai Akira, whose previous film was the romantic drama After the Rain (2018), the crime/horror thriller from Japan is described thusly on IMDb: "A kind man aspires to become a comic creator, but villains and evil deeds do not come easily to him. Things take a surprise turn when he comes across a family who were described as idealized that are no more." As I noted above, the trailer, which looks very slickly made and propulsive, is also very bloody, so it is likely Nsfw (not safe for work), unless you work at a slaughterhouse. More information is available at the Japanese-language official site. Character is...

“After the Rain” is screening at the San Diego Asian Film Festival
The opening scenes of Fan Jian’s documentary focus briefly on the rebuilding of the city after the catastrophic event of May 12. We can hear the sound of construction in the background while Sheng and Mei walk through the destroyed city with a bag of their daughter’s clothes. Shots of them throwing the clothes in the river are intercut with the bustling construction around them.
But rebuilding people’s lives, especially that of those who have lost a child, is much more complicated. Though the government lifts the terrible one...

The title for the eighth and final episode of Bridgerton Season 1, “After the Rain,” could not be more apt. With the relationship between our favorite married lovebirds, Daphne and Simon, feeling oh so stormy, only a perfectly timed act of nature could wash away the sorrow.

Netflix giveth and Netflix taketh away. Everyone who uses streaming services will know that as rights deals expire, movies come and go from various platforms. However, May looks to be an especially tough month for Netflix, with a lot of amazing films departing. This includes classics like Goodfellas, The Dirty Dozen, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Blade Runner: The Final Cut.
But surely the most missed will be Frank Darabont’s beloved The Shawshank Redemption. The pic is comfortably at the top of the IMDb Top 250 and its story of being confined and dreaming of escape has to appeal to viewers stuck inside due to Coronavirus lockdown.
