The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation has revealed the winners of the 50th annual Gracie Awards, an event designed to champion women’s voices, stories and achievements in many forms of media, from screens and podcasts to radio and creative accomplishments behind the camera. Among the honorees for this year are Megan Thee Stallion, Kathy Bates, Keke Palmer, Cristin Milioti, Margo Martindale, Diarra Kilpatrick, Norah O’Donnell, Dune: Prophecy, Dora, showrunner Issa López, veteran scribe Molly McNearney, St. Denis Medical, The English Teacher’s Stephanie Koenig and more.

Cristin Milioti, Megan Thee Stallion and Kathy Bates are among the recipients of this year’s Gracie Awards by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation.

This year’s celebration marks the 50th anniversary of the awards and will highlight the impact of women’s voices across television, audio, streaming, and digital platforms. Previous honorees of the Gracies have include Ava DuVernay, Carol Burnett, Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, Marlo Thomas, Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman, Oprah Winfrey, and Sandra Oh.

“For 50 years, the Gracie Awards have honored the storytellers who push boundaries and redefine what’s possible,” said Becky Brooks, President of Awmf, in a statement. “This is more than an awards show—it is a movement that has championed inclusion, representation, and truth in the media. The women we celebrate today are shaping the next 50 years, ensuring that our narratives are not just seen or heard, but felt and remembered.

BBC Studios (Bbcs) is staying in business with Spain’s Movistar Plus+, with the pair striking a new, multi-year content deal. This will see the debut of a BBC Player streaming service, new Fast channels and a recommitment to natural history and BBC Earth programs. Bbcs and streaming service Movistar Plus+ have already launched the likes of Planet Earth III, Mammal, Time Season 2 and cop show Blue Lights in Spain, while four Fast channels — BBC Top Gear, BBC Drama, BBC Food and BBC History — were added last month. Galvanized by pre-sales to France, Germany and Spain on awaited Icelandic crime series “Reykjavik Fusion,” Erik Barmack’s ahead of the game L.A-based Wild Sheep Content has boarded “Good Bones,” a New Zealand murder mystery series.

Wild Sheep by Barmack, a former Netflix head of international originals with oversight over “The Witcher,” “Casa de Papel,” “Kingdom” and “Sacred Games,” will co-produce “Good Bones,” with Luminous Beast.

One of New Zealand most in-demand new production companies Luminous Beast burst on the scene with Sky Originals series “INSiDE,” a 2021 International Emmy winner, and then “After the Party,” picked up by the U.K.’s Channel 4, and whose lead performance by Robyn Malcom was hailed by The Guardian as “among the best television portrayals in years, from anywhere in the world.”

Backed by The Mediapro Studio, Wild Sheep will also handle international distribution.

“Good Bones” is now funded by Sky New Zealand and Wild Sheep Content.

Upstart French sales outfit Lucky Number has picked up global sales rights to director Wesley Rodrigues’ “The Bird Kingdom,” backed by French “Flow” producer Sacrebleu Productions and Brazil’s Lupa Filmes. UFO Distribution will distribute the anti-violence fable in France.

Set in a fantasy version of the Brazilian Sertão, an arid wasteland where men can shapeshift into birds of prey, protagonist Assum Preto is taken as a child by Carcara, an outlaw who aspires to be a local legend.

“I’m a producer, but I am mostly an artistic producer. I think I have a good nose to find good projects, and I guess I also have a strong nose to find good partners,” Sacrebleu producer Ron Dyens told Variety of his film’s new sales agent. “And we had a very strong first feeling when I told Olivier [Barbier, Lucky Number co-founder] the references I had in mind for ‘Kingdom.

Russell Crowe and Ethan Hawke are set to unite for a new historical drama from director Padraic McKinley.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Crowe and Hawke are set to star in The Weight, a historical period drama set in 1930s Oregon. The film will be directed by McKinley, from a script written by Shelby Gaines, Matthew Chapman, and Matthew Booi. McKinley is an editor and producer known for American Gods and Kingdom. He recently served as an executive producer for Crowe's The Exorcism and has directed episodes of Debris and Kingdom. The Weight will serve as his feature film directorial debut.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won the top Visual Effects Society Award for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature at the 23rd Visual Effects Society Awards. Yet Tuesday at the Beverly Hilton, the Society spread the wealth, awarding three trophies, the most in the live-action feature categories, to “Dune: Part Two.”

In “Kingdom,” VFX studio Weta FX led by its production VFX supervisor Erik Winquist worked to advance the realism of its emotive apes in areas such as facial animation and muscle simulation, while placing them in environments including rapids and a great flood.

The sequel to 2021’s VFX Oscar and top Ves winner “Dune”, which again features key work by Dneg led by production VFX supervisor Paul Lambert, collected prizes in the categories for CG cinematography, for the Arrakeen Basin; effects simulation, for the atomic explosions and wormriding; and compositing and lighting, for wormriding, geidi prime, and the final battle.
