Humankind has waged war since before the beginning of recorded time. The first massacre took place around 10,000 years ago in Kenya, while the first definitive war took place several millennia later between the Sumerians and the Elamites in Mesopotamia circa 2,700 BC. From these bloody beginnings was born one of our most enduring and consistent institutions: War. The word itself sounds harsh, owing to its origins from the old High German word "werran," meaning "to confuse." Could there be a more accurate description?
It should be no surprise that war "movies" began before the advent of motion pictures as an art form or industry. The earliest war footage (some of it staged) was probably from the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, while the first proper war film was "Tearing Down The Spanish Flag" released in 1898 as a 90-second short film for nickelodeon theaters. While those may seem ancient to us, they're barely a...

Anthony and Joe Russo's new film "The Electric State" will arrive on Netflix on March 14, 2025 (you can watch the trailer here), and it comes with a lot of baggage. Adapted from a picture novel by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, "The Electric State" takes place in an alternate dystopian version of 1990s American where corporate mascots wander the landscape as intelligent robots. There was a recently-failed robot uprising, and now all the robotic mascots now wander a wasted, walled-off landscape, exiled from humanity. Millie Bobbie Brown plays Michelle, a young woman who has to venture into the robot wasteland in search of her long-lost brother.
The Russo brothers are perhaps best known for the work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as they oversaw the blockbusters "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Captain America: Civil War," "Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame," one of the most successful films of all time. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Theo James are joining forces for a new thriller... but no, it's not for the next James Bond film. After finishing up production last year, the unlikely duo will be starring in Fuze, which also boasts a stacked supporting cast. Now in post-production, the buzzy thriller is finally gaining some momentum as it has sold to numerous international distributors across the globe. It may not be the thriller fans of the actors have envisioned them in, but the creative forces behind Fuze should be plenty to justify a viewing.
Variety exclusively reports that in addition to Sky acquiring the film's theatrical release in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Fuze has secured spots in several other international markets, including Canada, Australia, Indonesia, and Latin America, among many others. As of right now, it is unclear when or if Fuze will hit theaters in the United States, but expect...

Exclusive: Production designer Donald Graham Burt has signed with Gersh for representation.
Burt is a two-time Academy Award and BAFTA winner for his work on Mank and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a pair of acclaimed films from David Fincher. The former drama, starring Gary Oldman, which also brought Burt the award for Best Production Design at the Critics Choice Awards, focused on screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and his turbulent journey in writing the screenplay for the iconic 1941 film Citizen Kane. The latter stars Brad Pitt as a man born with the physical appearance and ailments of an elderly person, who ages in reverse.
These projects mark just two of Burt’s collaboration with Fincher. Over the years, he’s also worked with the director on titles including Zodiac, Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and The Killer, as well as Netflix’s House of Cards.

Mel Gibson thrived as a popular actor for 15 years before Braveheart, but it was that film (his second as a director) which brought him awards attention for the first time (at least outside Australia). The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and remains the only film for which Gibson won an Academy Award. Three decades later, some people look back on that Best Picture winner as a melodramatic, inaccurate slog, while it remains a classic epic to others. Depending on where you stand about Braveheart, you might be delighted to know that there's an unofficial sequel starring Chris Pine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Florence Pugh — Outlaw King.
The Netflix film picks up almost directly after Braveheart ends. It comes at a precarious moment when England was trying to repair English-Scottish relations by marrying the king's goddaughter (Pugh) to Bruce (Pine). But when news of the execution of William Wallace (Gibson's character) reaches Scotland,...

Back in early 2023, it was announced that Best Actor Oscar nominee Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and Lily James, who was nominated for an Emmy for her performance as Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy, had signed on to star in the thriller Relay for director David Mackenzie, whose credits include Outlaw King, Under the Banner of Heaven, and Best Picture nominee Hell or High Water. By the end of April, they were joined in the cast by Sam Worthington of the Avatar franchise and production was underway. A year and a half later, Relay has finally secured a U.S. distribution deal, with Bleecker Street revealing that they’re planning to give the film a theatrical release sometime in 2025.

Ever since Henry Cavill debuted as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, the actor’s white-haired look has consumed the dreams of every Game of Thrones fan. Often referred to as the perfect pick for Aegon Taragaryen, the actor might not be available for the fantasy juggernaut, given that he is currently working hard to get a Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe off the ground.

Chris Pine had a laugh but wasn’t exactly thrilled when fans focused more on that scene in one flick than the gritty, R-rated action. The $120M epic delivered brutal battles, but what grabbed the internet’s attention? Pine’s brief full-frontal moment. Despite the blood and gore, fans zeroed in on his unexpected cameo.

Pine, ever the good sport, joked about the attention but admitted he wished people had talked more about the movie’s intense storytelling and less about his “junk.” It’s safe to say this flick gave audiences more than they bargained for—and Pine, well, he kept it classy.

Even though she's no stranger to Netflix, having starred in the streamer's original movies Outlaw King, Malevolent, and The Wonder, Academy Award-nominated actress Florence Pugh's biggest Netflix role is still to come. The talented star will lead the cast of Netflix's upcoming limited series East of Eden, based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck.
Pugh first became attached to star when word of the project was revealed by Deadline back in June 2022, but Netflix officially gave the limited series the green light in September 2024. Along with Pugh leading the cast, three additional cast members were announced at the time of the green light: Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, and Hoon Lee.
On Oct. 21, the ensemble cast of East of Eden was rounded out with Tracy Letts, Matha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders. With the cast set, it's reported that production on the seven-episode...

Most of the cast from J.J. Abrams' previous two Star Trek movies returned for Star Trek: Beyond, but the film introduced some new faces to the franchise as well. Beyond picks up with the USS Enterprise in the middle of their five-year mission, as Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew get pulled into a rescue mission that quickly turns deadly. After an ambush from Idris Elba's Krall, Kirk and his crew find themselves stranded on the planet Altamid and must work together to stop Krall from destroying the Federation.
The first of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films, Star Trek (2009), helped launch the careers of its cast into another level of stardom. By 2016 when Star Trek Beyond was released, many of its cast members had already risen to near superstardom status. A striking legacy of 9/11 is how the United States government exploited national grief and panic to pass aggressive legislation stripping Americans of privacy rights. The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, also known as the Patriot Act, was passed in October 2001, 45 days after the Twin Towers fell, and gave the government “roving surveillance authority.” Agents wouldn’t need a warrant to tap email communications or phone calls, or to monitor credit reports and banking history. Cloaked in the language of safety, the Patriot Act turned every person into a suspect. In the decades since, Americans have become so used to forfeiting privacy that we willingly opt-in to technologies and resources asking for data.

Sharp, fun, and smartly entertaining from its first scene to its final twist, David Mackenzie’s “Relay” is an old-fashioned movie about an old-fashioned guy. The movie is a modern paranoid thriller that harkens back to the genre’s ’70s heyday (though the far more recent “Michael Clayton” might be its most obvious point of reference). The guy is an alcoholic Muslim named Ash, who became a renegade deal broker after drinking away a more conventional life.
His stocks-in-trade are whistleblowers — he works to keep them safe from the companies who want them dead. His methods are analogue — Ash exclusively communicates with brave clients and evil conglomerates alike through a talk-to-text relay service designed to help deaf people make standard phone calls. Nobody ever hears his voice or learns his name; he hammers a message into his teleprinter, and a team of very confused (but unfailingly professional) operators then speak...

The 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival announced its full lineup of Galas and Special Presentations today in what is a complete embarrassment of riches as the event blasts off after last year’s actors strike with 29 titles having rights for sale.
Among those movies making their world premieres is the Angelina Jolie-directed war drama Without Blood, starring Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir, based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. There’s also Mike Leigh’s first movie in six years, Hard Truths, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, which is billed as an “ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”
Gia Coppola has the drama The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka and Billie Lourd, which follows a seasoned stage dancer who must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a 30-year run.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we talk about the best Chris – Chris Pine of course! Our B-Sides include Small Town Saturday Night, People Like Us, The Finest Hours, Outlaw King, All The Old Knives, and Poolman. It’s a packed episode! And it’s just Conor and I, ripping it up like the old days.
A lot of the conversation revolves around how charming Pine is. There’s also discussion of that underwhelming ending of The Finest Hours, what about Small Town Saturday Night resonates with young filmmakers, the brave opening of Outlaw King, the old-fashioned crackle of All The Old Knives (and that incredible restaurant location), and the lackluster direction of People Like Us.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and director David Mackenzie have started filming their new movie, Fuze, in and around London. More here:
As speculation has built over whether or not Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be the next James Bond 007, the man himself has been preparing for his next film role. Off the back of his supporting turn in this summer’s The Fall Guy, he’s now taking on the lead role in a heist thriller by the name of Fuze.
We’ve talked about the film before, our interest piqued by the fact that the brilliant David Mackenzie is directing the feature. I’ll get told off by Ryan Lambie of this very parish if I don’t immediately direct you to 2016’s superb Hell Or High Water, but I don’t think he’ll mind if I salute both Starred Up and Young Adam as well.

Theo James will star opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson in British heist thriller Fuze, a film that comes with an explosive twist.
Theo James is one of those actors who seems to keep earning plaudits whatever he features in and as such, he’s got a couple of promising film projects in the pipeline. Chief among them? A starring role in David Mackenzie’s upcoming British heist thriller, Fuze.
James most recently starred in The Gentlemen, the small screen spin-off (pictured) from Guy Ritchie’s 2019 film. Before that, the British actor picked up plenty of critical praise for an excellent take on ‘the character you love to hate’ in Mike White’s second season of The White Lotus, the anthology drama series that has been praised by critics and audiences alike.

Chris Pine made an anti-style statement at the Los Angeles premiere of Poolman to celebrate his directing debut at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles.
Pine decided to go with a look that no one would ever expect on the red carpet. He rocked a tan jacket with a flower pin, denim shorts and brown boots. He showed his love for Los Angeles with a white shirt, reading, “I heart L.A.”
In the film, Pine stars as an amateur detective in the City of Angels, trying to solve a mystery.
In 2018, Pine spoke about acting in the nude for the film Outlaw King on The Graham Norton Show and shared other people’s reactions.
“I bear the ‘full monty,’ and it got a lot of attention,” he said. “I thought the witty reviews were brilliant, but what struck me most was that Florence Pugh bears everything, too, and no one commented.

After earning universal acclaim for his screenplay for Sicario, Taylor Sheridan once again hit it out of the park with his neo-western thriller Hell or High Water, which was too received highly among critics. Arguably one of the best heist films put on the screen in the last decade, the thriller excels at everything it sets out to achieve, especially with the bank robbery sequence,
But critics aren’t alone in lauding the thriller, as the neo-western got a unique bit of praise from Cain Vincent Dyer, who possesses vast knowledge when it comes to bank robberies.

Hollywood star Chris Pine’s career has taken a downward turn since the release of Don’t Worry Darling. The controversy and chaos surrounding the film have put a “curse” on Pine’s once-promising career. Each subsequent project of the star since this film has faced unique challenges of their own.
Chris Pine in Outlaw King
His directorial debut was no exception. There have been glimmers of hope with films like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves but overall, luck has been in short supply for Pine. What happened at the premiere of his directorial debut project is truly surprising.
Audience Walked Out of Chris Pine’s Directorial Debut Chris Pine in Poolman
Chris Pine made his debut as a director in Poolman, a film that he produced, co-wrote, and also starred in. Donning multiple hats on this project, the Wonder Woman actor must have expected the film to do well.

Medieval war movies have often struggled to find commercial success at the box office, despite positive critical reception. The Last Duel, The King, and The Green Knight are recent medieval war films that were well-made but underperformed commercially. Ridley Scott's Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven is considered an excellent medieval war epic and a must-watch for fans of the genre.
Medieval war movies are generally few and far between, and several worth watching have flown under the radar. While World War II films have remained consistently appealing for decades in Hollywood, sword-and-sandal war movies have been far less consistent in their success. The Golden Age of Hollywood popularized historical epics, and they had a slight resurgence in the '90s and 2000s with films like Braveheart and Gladiator that found commercial success. Great medieval movies flew under the radar between eras, flopping at the box office despite positive critical reception.

“I had the idea of combining all the high stakes of an unexploded bomb with that of a bank robbery – clashing these two genres to create as much pressure as possible in a context that feels as real as possible. Ben Hopkins took those ingredients and cooked up the compelling script that we are now taking into production,” the director said in a statement.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson set to star in bank heist film, Fuze, from Outlaw King director David Mackenzie
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been spending the last couple of years trying to avoid James Bond questions since it was said he was testing for the new role. The Bullet Train star stated, “I just focus on the things I can have in my hands right now. What’s in front of me right now.“ What’s in front of him is his next go at comic book movies with the Spider-man-related film, Kraven The Hunter. The Sony film, made in association with Marvel, was originally set to release last year. However, the strikes would delay the movie to late this summer on August 30, 2024.
While we wait to see what happens on the James Bond front, Taylor-Johnson has lined up a new project that will reunite him with his Outlaw King director, David Mackenzie. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Taylor-Johnson will be starring in Fuze, a bank heist movie with a bit of a twist.

Hell Or High Water and Outlaw King director David Mackenzie is to make another film with Aaron Taylor-Johnson – the heist thriller, Fuze.
David Mackenzie has already made one spectacular heist movie with Hell Or High Water, so it’s pleasing to hear he’s about to embark on another one. Called Fuze, it’ll star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with whom Mackenzie previously collaborated on the 2018 historical piece, Outlaw King.
The film’s heist takes place as an area of London is evacuated following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb; based on an idea by Mackenzie, it’s the work of British screenwriter and novelist Ben Hopkins, whose most recent credit was the 2023 psychological thriller Inside, which starred Willem Dafoe as an art thief.
Fuze will also see Mackenzie re-team with Giles Nuttgens, the cinematographer who made West Texas look so bleakly captivating in Hell Or High Water.

Medieval war movies depict physically taxing hand-to-hand combat and showcase the harsh circumstances of each soldier. The best medieval war movies provide a visceral and human experience, capturing the grand scale of medieval warfare. Despite recreating conflicts from hundreds of years ago, medieval war movies can still resonate with modern audiences through their intense emotional stories.
Most war movies focus on more recent conflicts, but the chaos and scale of medieval battle have made for some incredible cinematic experiences over the years. The Middle Ages stretched from the fall of Rome to the Renaissance period. This stretch of roughly 1000 years is remembered today as a time of extreme social inequality, religious dogma, and persistent conflict in Europe. Naturally, this set the stage for large-scale medieval warfare, and movies about medieval knights and royalty attempt to capture the grand scale of the era.

Chris Pine's best movies showcase his versatility, naturalism, and ability to build compelling characters, bringing emotional depth to each role. From high-budget sci-fi franchises to low-budget indies, Pine has excelled in lead roles since his breakout in the 2009 Star Trek reboot cast. Pine's standout performances are evident in films like Smokin' Aces, The Finest Hours, Star Trek Beyond, Outlaw King, and Hell or High Water.
Chris Pine's best movies show the actor's versatility, skill at building characters, naturalism, unmatched screen presence, and well of emotional depth. Despite Pine's admitted lack of passion for acting initially, he has brought his well-trained and inherited talent to a range of films, from high-budget sci-fi franchises to low-budget indies and everything in between. While the actor is always in top form and has been a standout and a saving grace in a few less-than-stellar movies, some of his films are worth watching more than others.

Chaos Rising is a 40-minute proof of concept short film that was paid for via crowdfunding, raising a final budget of £27k – all of which appears on a title card at the film’s opening, in a way that I can’t decide is either a humble brag or an apology for how the final product turned out!
The film apparently draws inspiration from the rich and immersive Warhammer universe but as someone who grew up on Citadel’s classic roleplaying game, there’s little here of the Warhammer I remember of my childhood. Instead, it feels very much akin to someone who’s watched far too many episodes of the TV show Vikings and decided they want to see Vikings take on British knights.

It has been seven years since the last time Chris Pine starred as Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk in 2016's Star Trek Beyond, but the actor has certainly been busy in the meantime. Pine first took up the role of Captain Kirk in 2009 for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, the first installment in a new series of Trek stories following a younger, alternate universe version of Jim Kirk and his crew. As established in that film, Abrams' Star Trek movies take place in an alternate timeline, known as the Kelvin timeline, where Romulus and Vulcan have both been destroyed.
Chris Pine plays a younger, more rebellious version of Kirk than William Shatner portrayed in Star Trek: The Original Series. Alongside Zachary Quinto's Spock and Karl Urban's Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Pine helped introduce an entirely new audience to the universe of Star Trek. Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness...
