Red Bull has been at the top of the Formula 1 game for about half a decade. The Milton Keynes-based outfit has brought in four successive world championships with Max Verstappen at the helm. To some, the Dutch racer seems to be hogging all the attention. To others, it is simply Verstappen’s skill as the best driver of his generation on full display.

However, as Formula One enters the 2025 season, the car is simply not performing the way it should, considering its championship-winning turnout for the past 4 years. For Drive to Survive, the barest hint about Red Bull’s underwhelming performance is enough to spark dramatic ideas. One of those might have to do with the Daniel Ricciardo curse and the aftermath of his exit.

The 2024 Grand Prix was one of the most volatile seasons yet in Formula 1 history. Alliances shifted, rivalries were born, and tempers flared on and off the track, as Drive to Survive documented each moment with a vested interest. However, despite Netflix’s efforts to get the audience to feel up close and personal with the sport, the show ended up doing more harm than good to F1.

After seven whole seasons, the drivers and fans alike have cried out against Drive to Survive‘s unethical technique of selective editing and storytelling. The Netflix series has drafted storylines to serve its own purpose by adding fake sound effects, manipulating audio clips, and distorting real events for drama.
However, as the 2025 Grand Prix kicks off, Drive to Survive might already have found its biggest headline-grabbing drama for Season 8.

In 2024, British motorsports journalist Will Buxton made quite a stir when he announced that he was quitting the popular Netflix series, Drive to Survive in the upcoming year. Season 7 was his final foray into the world of high-adrenaline entertainment presented through the lens of reality television.

The decision to step away from Drive to Survive was not a political one but rather personal on his part. Despite the growing irritability of fans and drivers regarding the Netflix show’s faulty storylines and distorted presentation of facts and real events, Buxton stuck by the series through thick and thin.
His decision to quit in the 2025 season came on the heels of his exit from the entire Formula 1 motorsport arena as Buxton now packs up and transfers to IndyCar.

Hailing from Vienna, Austria, Andreas Nikolaus “Niki” Lauda was one of the most celebrated Formula 1 race car drivers of all time. He raced in Formula 1 for 13 years and managed to win the Drivers’ Championship three times. Lauda and his fierce rivalry with James Hunt gave the F1 world some unforgettable moments, which led to Ron Howard making a movie about the legendary drivers’ rivalry and the accident that shook the racing world.
Despite his unshakable driving precision and skills, an unfortunate incident occurred during the 1976 F1 season at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, a track also known as the “Green Hell.” Despite his request not to race at the track due to its horrible conditions and lack of safety, the Fia decided to proceed. It was during this race that he suffered a life-threatening accident.

The data regarding Formula 1 suggests that Netflix might be the perfect partner for the racing league after the 2025 season.
The 2024 Formula 1 season has long passed the finish line, and the green flag has already dropped on the 2025 season. However, as the racing circuit looks toward a new media rights deal, looking back at last year’s viewership data will be incredibly important. As part of its current broadcast agreement in the United States, races appeared on ABC and ESPN channels over the course of the year, but data shows that ratings fell in the U.S. in 2024. However, F1 races continued to improve upon their impressive numbers around the globe. That information could point to an ideal broadcast partner for Formula 1 as it looks past 2025 into the future.
Key Details: Formula 1 races averaged 1.13 million viewers each in 2024. The racing league added more than 90 million new fans around the globe.

Drive to Survive is a docudrama that uses real F1 race footage and behind-the-scenes clips to give fans an engaging recap of the previous season. Created by James Gay-Rees, the series was developed with the help of Netflix in collaboration with the Fia after they gained access to all drivers and teams.
However, the show is notorious for not always portraying events as they happened, often mixing and stitching scenes together to create drama and make it more engaging for viewers. While fans enjoy the over-the-top storytelling, it often creates friction among racers and teams. One such racer who is not particularly fond of the Netflix show is Max Verstappen, who is often portrayed as the villain of the grid, making it seem like he didn’t always deserve his victories.
This led to his withdrawal from the show, as he was absent from the third and fourth seasons, which clearly impacted the series’ viewership.

The rookies didn’t fair well in week 1 and will be out to prove themselves before it’s too late.
The 2025 Formula 1 season is underway, and week one in Australia was very telling of what’s to come. Many new faces didn’t perform near what was expected, and McLaren already looks like the dominant team for 2025. Race two brings us to China, where we got to see the first sprint race of 2025 and now we’ll find out who is up to the task of going the distance. The race airs on ESPN, so I recommend you watch it — and the entire F1 season — while taking advantage of 50% off your first month with Sling.

For the longest time, Netflix has enjoyed a free rein with Drive to Survive. The series on Formula 1 that documents an entire year of Grand Prix in each 10-episode season has often taken liberties with its “content” by manipulating real events for drama. The series only grows bolder in misleading its audience with each season and despite being criticized, stands its ground on the said issue.

Drivers and team principals have time and again called out Netflix and its F1 series for faulty representations and distorted reality. The discrepancy between the actual experience on the track and what is portrayed on the screen makes it difficult to contend with the series, no matter how instrumental Drive to Survive has been in boosting F1’s popularity around the world.

Drive to Survive has hardly been careful when it comes to crossing over into unethical territories with its storytelling. Time and again, the Netflix series has raised concerns among fans and veterans of the industry with its malicious and intentionally misleading narratives.
However, despite the criticism, the show still enjoys an ardent following on the platform due to its dramatically entertaining ability to tell a story about the cutthroat lives of Formula 1 drivers.

Now in its 7th season, Drive to Survive hardly plans to stop in its current mission to document each of the 24 Grands Prix from Australia to Abu Dhabi. As it bulldozes relationships and fractures the peace and stability of the F1 paddock on its way to filming the next fake scandal, some drivers call an end to their patience by boycotting the series entirely after putting up with too much of their nonsense.

There is a lot to unpack in Drive to Survive. Be it the show’s meticulous approach to fabricating storylines for its own benefit or defending said storylines in a righteously indignant manner, the Netflix docu-series offers an unusual way of looking at the same race from very different perspectives. But the one constant that both Netflix and critics could agree on was everyone’s favorite Aussie: Daniel Ricciardo.

However, now that the Honey Badger has retired, there exists a huge chasm in the space that he once used to fill with his brimming confidence and infectious laughter. While it will be difficult for Drive to Survive to find a fitting replacement within the current lineup of F1 drivers, the series can make a full 180° turn and go for the ultimate villain to fill the vacancy left by the ultimate hero.

It was Fp 2 at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix and Daniel Ricciardo was left with a broken metacarpal bone in his right hand. The moments leading up to the crash and the injury were minor in terms of all the ways a race can go wrong. And yet, Ricciardo was at the wrong place at the wrong time and was left to contend with a fate that would spell the beginning of the end of his F1 career.

With the amount of competitive spirit dominating the Formula 1 grid during a Grand Prix season, it almost feels like there’s blood in the water and the sharks are circling. The pervading tense atmosphere that looms over the racetracks as each car hurtles down at 200 miles per hour is palpable and this is the energy that Drive to Survive strives to capture in the 10-episode segments of its show.

Despite the immense popularity that Netflix’s Drive to Survive brought to two of its leading figureheads: Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, the sport is not the first and only means of earnings that established the two rivals in the world of Formula 1.
As competitors, it doesn’t get any better than Wolff and Horner – as one led Mercedes at the height of its power with Lewis Hamilton as the seven-time world champion, and the other is now leading Red Bull with its star performer Max Verstappen succeeding Hamilton as the new generation’s legend.

The company sees opportunities to expand its sports inventory further, but isn’t necessarily looking to add more MLB rights.
In the wake of its decision to essentially let the NBA walk out the door, Warner Bros. Discovery is plotting out its next steps in sports broadcasting with great care. The company has spoken more than once about the need to be “disciplined” in regard to live sports and has been quite targeted in its attempts to add more games and events to its channels and streaming services. TNT Sports CEO Luis Silberwasser appeared recently on an episode of John Ourand’s “The Varsity” podcast to talk about which events it could pursue in the future, and which sports it probably already has enough of.

The overarching narrative of Drive to Survive is that the series manipulates facts and statistical truths in every which way possible to make its version of events better, more dramatic, and more addictive to watch. The formula paid off in the initial few seasons as an increasing number of viewers flocked to the Netflix series and became increasingly invested in the events of Formula One.

Formula 1 is not merely a scripted event made for the entertainment of its viewers; it is a highly competitive sport with the lives and reputations of teams and drivers at stake. To twist an already high-adrenaline spectacle into a comically reductive version of itself is an insult to the sport and everyone involved with it.
As such, Drive to Survive has time and again fielded critics, fans, drivers, and team principals when they have vocally spoken out against the show.

We here at Tubefilter have written a lot about the continuing prevalence of sports content on social platforms, streaming, and traditional TV. As broadcast and linear TVs’ market share continues to decline, sports content viewership has remained strong–and sports are finding deeper connections with passionate audiences on platforms like YouTube and Reddit, too.
But while we’ve mostly focused on sports like golf and basketball, there’s been a sleeper roaring in the wings: Formula 1.
If you’ve been in digital fandom spaces at all, you’ll know Formula 1–the international, ultra high speed, single-seater motor car races–experienced a massive resurgence during Covid, with much of that fresh traffic generated by hit Netflix documentary Drive to Survive. The U.S. fanbase alone now comprises over 45 million people.
And the demographic where it’s seeing the most growth? 16- to 24-year-old girls.

The popularity of Netflix’s Drive to Survive has made the series indisposable to the latest generation of Formula 1 fans. Introduced via the highly dramatized documentary series, these fans have grown to love the sport after witnessing it through Netflix’s colored lens.

On top of its dramatic, fictionalized, and misleading tone, Drive to Survive has also demonstrated moments of absolute heroism and glory that are powerful enough to retain the drivers’ names in the annals of history. From Max Verstappen’s four consecutive world championship titles to McLaren’s first title win in 26 years, both history and Netflix are recording it all.
However, there’s nothing quite as fascinating as the legacy of Ferrari.

The history of Formula 1 is certainly lucrative, with the highest class of international racing now in its 75th year since its 1950 inception. Since then, many names have been immortalized among the annals of the sport, with the likes of Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, and Lewis Hamilton becoming household names the world over. In recent years, it's been the turn of Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team to take charge, although the battle with Lando Norris across the 2024 season has proven F1 is never a foregone conclusion.

Formula 1 is in full effect for 2025!
The racing sport is back and in the midst of the first race season of the year, taking place at the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Australia.
With the new season here, you may be wondering just how much money the drivers make as this is considered the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars.
These guys often earn the most thanks to their success on the track and their ability to amass sponsors and fans. Their performance, experience, and marketability, are important factors as well.
Driver salaries in F1 are typically negotiated between the driver and their team, with many contracts lasting multiple years.
On top of a base salary, drivers may also receive bonuses for podium finishes or championship wins, as well as incentives for attracting sponsors or improving the team’s performance.

The director of F1 explains exactly how the movie's realistic racetrack scenes were brought to life. The upcoming movie stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a retired Formula One racer who is brought back to support a young new hotshot, Joshua "Noah" Pearce (Damson Idris). While the F1 story is fictional, the production provides realism in many ways, including working with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile to craft the movie and bringing in real-life racing legend Lewis Hamilton as a producer in addition to his onscreen appearance playing himself opposite other racers including Sergio Pérez and Lando Norris.

F1could be Brad Pitt's own version of Top Gun: Maverick, and it helps that the same guy is behind the wheel and in the director's chair for the upcoming race-driving drama. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film follows a veteran race car driver (Pitt) who mentors a "hotshot rookie" played by Snowfall star Damson Idris. The official trailer has finally been released, and it lives up to the lofty expectations longtime fans of the actor and filmmaker have held since the film's inception.
As the trailer teases, it is clear the DNA of Top Gun: Maverick has transferred over to F1, but with some natural tweaks. Pitt plays the lead role of Sonny Hayes, a Formula 1 driver who was a major player in the 1990s, until an accident changed the trajectory of his career forever. Now, he has a chance to redeem himself, but he'll have to get through some growing pains,...

The official trailer, which clocks in at 2:30 minutes, follows Pitt's Sonny Hayes as he attempts to return to the intense and competitive world of Formula 1. Not as a driver, but as a mentor and consultant to a struggling Formula 1 team.
The release of the trailer on Mar. 13 is not coincidental, considering that the real Formula 1 is set to kick off the new season on Sunday, Mar. 16, with the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia.
The upcoming film had previously released a teaser trailer last month, which gave a first look at Pitt's character,...

This summer, F1 will bring the high-speed danger and thrills of Formula 1 to the big screen, under the watchful eye of director Joseph Kosinski. A few days ago, Collider was invited to attend a special Q&a with Kosinski following the press unveiling of the film’s official trailer, where he detailed the extensive preparation involved, from Brad Pitt’s driving training to filming at real Grand Prix events under the microscope of the elite teams involved. The film, which has also been produced by F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, is trying to be the most immersive racing movie ever made, and according to Kosinski, every frame of F1 was designed to capture the raw speed and precision of the sport.

I won't beat around the bush: "F1" looks rad as hell. Director Joseph Kosinski has reunited with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriter Ehren Kruger after working with them on the fantastic "Top Gun: Maverick," and it's obvious that they're looking to create something similar here set in the world of Formula 1 racing.
There are recognizable archetypes and familiar rhythms to films like this -- charming leading man playing a guy whose best days are ostensibly behind him, hot love interest to inspire him on the sidelines, young up-and-comer representing the modern way of doing things, etc. -- and credit where it's due, Bruckheimer has built an incredible career making movies that are slight variations on that formula. When it's firing on all cylinders, there's a cathartic, satisfying, pump-your-fist quality to this type of moviemaking that feels like a throwback to a different era.
But was the monster success of...

Start your engines! Brad Pitt roars onto the race track — and soon the big screen — in the new trailer for “F1,” directed by “Top Gun: Maverick’s” Joseph Kosinski.
The Apple Original Film stars Pitt as former Formula 1 race car driver Sonny Hayes, described in the trailer as “the best [driver] that never was.” Javier Bardem plays the boss of an underdog race team who convinces Sonny to return to the sport to partner with and mentor rookie driver Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris). Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Sarah Niles, Kim Bodnia and Samson Kayo round out the cast.
The trailer, set to Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” is equal parts intimate and thrilling as it puts the audience behind the wheel of Pitt and Idris’ race cars – much like “Top Gun: Maverick” strapped moviegoers into a fighter jet’s cockpit. And the stakes are as high on the ground as...

The trailer for Apple Films & Warner Bros.’ “F1” hit today, and it seems to offer not only high-octane action and visceral thrills but bruising dramas within. Like “Top Gun: Maverick,” which seamlessly blended buzzing supersonic aerial intensity with heart, soul, romance and meaningful character dynamics, “F1,” about the dangerous, high-stakes world of Formula One auto racing, director Joseph Kosinski seems like he’s applied the same flying and drama principles to his Brad Pitt-starring racing movie

Fasten your seatbelts; Apple and Warner Bros. have just dropped an astonishing full trailer for F1, the highly anticipated racing thriller starring Brad Pitt and directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski co-wrote the screenplay with Ehren Kruger (Top Gun: Maverick), with Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner among the producers. The movie, which has spent two years filming all across the world during proper Formula 1 races, looks like it's taking what Top Gun did for fighter jets and applying it to racing cars. This might end up being one of the most adrenaline-pumping films ever made.
