The Legend of Lake Hollow is the first feature from director Chris Hollo. If you’re into country music, his name may be familiar to you as the official photographer for The Grand Ole Opry, a position he’s held since 2000. However, that has little in common with this film which opens with Mark and Carson arriving at the lakeside cabin they’ve rented. They’re barely in the door when they start checking out pictures from the property’s trail cams, and see something with a wicked set of claws.

Before they can act on that, Mark’s brother Dan arrives with his fiancé Shay and her friend Laurie. It’s not long before they’re hearing strange noises from the woods and finding more odd pictures captured by the trail cams.

The Bell Keeper opens on a reasonably strong note for what appears to be an indie slasher. An axe-wielding figure, we’ll later find out his name is Hank, dispatches a pair of victims and adds their driver’s licenses to the collection on his cabin wall. The only as to why, “You shouldn’t have rung the bell”.

This happens at Lake Bell which, as the newspaper headlines under the credits tell us, has a long and evil reputation that includes lots of brutal deaths and mysterious disappearances. So of course filmmakers Gabriel, and Matthew want to make a documentary about it.

Liam Neeson leads the Retribution cast with famous child actors, award-winning Broadway stars, and an ‘80s icon in supporting roles. This is the latest in a long line of action movies starring Neeson. A remake of the 2015 Spanish thriller El Desconocido, Retribution revolves around a banker who gets into his car with his kids and learns that the car has been rigged with bombs that will explode if anyone leaves their seat or the car is stopped. The mysterious assailant, who calls the banker on a phone he left in the car, will deactivate the bombs if he transfers a large sum of money into his account.

Set to be released on VOD on August 24, the Hollywood remake of Retribution is directed by Nimród Antal, the filmmaker behind Predators, Metallica: Through the Never, and two episodes of Stranger Things. The screenplay for the remake, adapted from Alberto Marini’s original script,...

This week’s horror and sci-fi Blu-ray and DVD titles are an eclectic bunch, led by a pair of cult classics—Fright and Straight on Till Morning—which were both directed by Peter Collinson. Arrow Video put together a special edition release for Who Saw Her Die?, which this writer is really looking forward to checking out in the coming weeks, and Unearthed Classics is resurrecting Nightwish on both formats as well.

In terms of new films, The Velocipastor arrives on Tuesday on both Blu and DVD, and for those of you who missed it in theaters, Dark Phoenix rises again on multiple formats, and Clownado touches down this week on DVD as well.

Other notable releases for September 17th include The Night Sitter, D-Railed, The Bloody Ape, Return of the Scarecrow, and The Films of Sarah Jacobson: Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore & I Was a Teenage Serial Killer from Agfa.

With Labor Day behind us, that only means one thing: summer is nearly over and it’s time to start getting ready for the Halloween season. And what better way to get you in the mood for all the macabre-filled madness to come than with some brand new horror Blu-rays and DVDs?

This Tuesday, Ma is coming home to party on both formats, and if you missed them during their limited theatrical runs, you can also catch up with both The Wind and Darlin’ this week as well. As the calendar creeps closer towards the Halloween season, we have a brand new month of VOD and Digital releases coming our way throughout the month of August. Things kick off on the 2nd with the latest installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series, School Spirit, and the directorial debut of Jason Mewes, Method in the Madness, also hits various platforms the same day.

August 6th is a very busy day for digital releases, as we have 10 different films coming out that day, including Brightburn, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Night Sitter, and Perception. Nekrotronic, featuring Monica Bellucci, arrives on the 9th, and just a few days later, The Banana Splits Movie hits digital on the 13th, and I’m still not sure what to make of it, but I will definitely be watching that night to see just what on earth they’ve done with these classic TV characters.

Abiel Bruhn and John Rocco (A Not So Pleasant Surprise) work together once again on The Night Sitter, a horror film about a con artist who pretends to be a babysitter in order to steal from a wealthy occult enthusiast. Things don’t necessarily go to plan, however, when the attempt at the theft is interrupted by the awakening of three witches. The results aren’t so good, as The Three Mothers begin to snuff people out. The babysitter, Amber and the two kids she’s babysitting, Ronnie and Kevin, do their best to survive. Ambers friends also join in the fun, and perhaps begin to wish they hadn’t.

Let’s talk about the cast a little.

Signature Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled The Night Sitter, from filmmakers Abiel Bruhn & John Rocco (A Not So Pleasant Surprise). This premiered at a few genre festivals last year and is getting a release this summer. It's hard to figure out what's going on in the trailer, but it certainly does look freaky and unsettling. Inspired by masters of horror cinema like Argento, Raimi, and Carpenter, The Night Sitter is a "nostalgic, creepy-as-hell horror described as Home Alone meets The Evil Dead." 2018 Nightmares Film Festival Announced: Press Release: "For horror fans, Christmas has come three months early -- in the form of the Nightmares Film Festival 2018 program, revealed today by the leading genre fest.

This is somehow the third Christmas horror movie I have reviewed for Nerdly and watched this year. A fact that is only surprising because I will only watch Christmas movies during November and December. And November is only included because I have too many holiday-themed films to great through in just one month!

My love for these films just come from my love of Christmas in general. At the risk of lots of horror fans groaning, I prefer it to Halloween! I think because as a child Halloween was nothing to me, I was way too scared to ‘Trick or Treat’ and I watched horror movies all year round so that time wasn’t any more special.

Home invasion thrillers are a dime a dozen, but rarely has there been one that’s oozing with as much style as The Night Sitter.
