On Christmas, Varun’s latest action thriller opened to fair numbers, and despite a share of merits, it failed to attract footfalls to theatres. The biggest reason behind the film’s failure is its tag of being a remake of Thalapathy Vijay’s Theri. It faced an outright rejection from the audience, and even the Pushpa 2 storm dented its run.

Looking at the first half of the year, January to June 2023, one would believe that the film industry has yet to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown effect. The films just don’t seem to work. Nor do the top-billing stars. Were it for the Covid-19 hangover, how does one explain the blockbuster success of ‘The Kashmir Files’ and ‘The Kerala Story’? How does one account for the success of ‘Pathaan’, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’,’Zara Hatkke Zara Bachke’, and the last year’s release ‘Drishyam 2’?
As against these successes, what explains the failure of such massively budgeted vehicles such as ‘Adipurush’, to cite the very recent example? Looks like the Hindi audience is not lured by films that are mainly made on computers with VFX!
Indians miss the human story, emotions, humour and music. Something closer to their heart, what they can identify with. The viewers want normal...

Mumbai, March 14 (Ians) Actor Pavail Gulati, who recently shot an ad with actress Alia Bhatt, says that he likes taking up ad shoots. However, the actor adds that the short time doesn't allow him to interact with everyone else on the set.
"Filming for ads is fun. The only difference between shooting for a film and shooting for an ad is, I think, the time involved to shoot. For an ad, you shoot only for a couple of days, so you don't get to interact with everybody like you do on a film set. You work for a longer time on a film set and that kind of brings you closer together," says Pavail, who has been seen in film such as "Ittefaq", "Thappad" and "Kalank".
Talking about filming his recent ad with Alia, Pavail says that the entire experience was amazing. "It was a fun, quirky shoot. I had a blast.

"Wedding outfits are absolutely stunning and gorgeous, but they are also so heavy. I have made a mental note to never wear something too heavy. She also expressed her desire to be surrounded by the mountains for her destination wedding, because her big day has to be held in a place filled with tranquillity.

Playback singer Neeti Mohan says she has observed that a woman gets fewer lines in a duet track for a film, but personally, she emphasizes on the importance of a song rather than the length of her part.
Neeti told the publication: "I think last year, I was feeling it too much that the female part in a duet song is much shorter than the male part in the song, but I think it is slowly changing. This year I did not have such a song."
"In my song 'First Class' from the film Kalank, I was okay with the shorter part in the duet because it was to praise the man. In the Bharat?song 'Aithey aa' also I have a substantial part. My problem starts when I see that in a situation when the girl is telling her feeling, say crying or laughing, the song is sung by a male singer.

New Line/DC Entertainment’s family superhero adventure Shazam! easily retained the top spot in its third weekend virtually by default.
One reason for the dreary Easter weekend trading: Distributors were unwilling to launch films for fear of being crushed by the Disney/Marvel juggernaut Avengers: End Game, which opens on Wednesday.

Abhishek Varman spares no expense in this tale of forbidden love – but heavenly visuals are marred by clunky storytelling
With the oddly titled Kalank (Blemish), we find Bollywood in something of a pickle. Since the runaway global success of the two-part Telugu epic Baahubali, Indian producers have followed a bigger-is-better credo, drumming up a succession of thunderous historical throwbacks such as Manikarnika, which summoned multitudes of extras but precious little poetry or wonder.
Audiences have started to gravitate instead towards more personal stories and pithier genre fare, such as surprise-pregnancy comedy Badhaai Ho and horror Stree.

Kalank is probably the biggest film of 2019 so far taking that title from some strong movies already released. As the title suggests, its main prerogative is to deal with one mistake and its consequences. To this end a superstar cast led by Madhuri Dixit with Sanjay Dutt in tow, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha and finally young lovers Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan will show from different perspectives the meanings behind and around Kalank. Since budget is of no consequence Pritam has been asked to deliver 10 strong pieces to create a soundtrack that will rival the story, giving plenty of chance for all to dance.
Ghar More Pardesiya is the first song of this album and in itself is easily a contender for song of the year. From the Youtube clip, Madhuri sings for dancers she seems to be training and then is taken over by a stunning performance...

Events leading to the 1947 Partition of India serve as the forebodingly serious backdrop for the exhaustingly overextended razzmatazz of “Kalank,” writer-director Abhishek Varman’s lavish but ponderous Bollywood extravaganza, which opened in the U.S. on more than 300 screens the same day as its Indian release. Despite the preponderance of sets and costumes spectacular enough to make Baz Luhrmann weep with envy, and a handful of thrillingly choreographed production numbers that sporadically quicken the movie’s pulse and boost its eye-candy quotient, the attractive yet underwhelming lead players are too hampered by the lethargic narrative to sufficiently distract viewers from their awareness of time passing and interest diminishing.
The action unfolds in and around the city of Husnabad, a year or so before the Partition that eventually led to the establishment of India and Pakistan as independent countries. Newspaper publisher Dev Chaudhry (Aditya Roy Kapur), a well-to-do member of the Hindu-minority elite,...

Actor Aditya Roy Kapur, who is awaiting the release of Kalank and is gearing up for two more films, says a break of two years in his career has been good for him to approach his craft better. "In Kalank, I am playing a character which is quite strong, quiet, a little complex, yet interesting. That drew me towards the character when I heard the narration from director Abhishek Verman.
"It required me to do something. I am the happiest when I am at a film set, so after two years when we started shooting, I was more than excited. That break in between was good for me because I had a fresh approach to my performance," Aditya told Ians.
"As actors, when we keep working every day, after a point of time we just know all our emotional cards and how to play them. It becomes a little mechanical...

Whether it is Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt manages to look perfect with all the actors she has been paired with on-screen. Now as fans eagerly await to see her with Ranbir Kapoor in Brahmastra and with superstar Salman Khan in Inshallah, the actress says sharing a camaraderie with a co-star impacts performance. Ever since Sanjay Dutt was announced to be a part of Karan Johar's Kalank, there has been immense excitement to witness the Superstar in the intense and gritty avatar. However, Kalank doesn't mark the collaboration of Sanjay Dutt and Karan Johar but is ideation of Yash Johar.
The actor had discussed the film with Yash Johar long ago and was on board since the beginning. It was only now that the dream of the late filmmaker turned into a reality as the film releases next week.?
Tracing back the discussion with Yash Johar, Sanjay Dutt said, "Yes, I briefly knew about it. He had spoken about it and I am glad that Abhishek (Varman) turned Yash uncle?s dream into reality on celluloid. For me, this is like working in my home production because of Yash uncle and the relationship that we have shared with the family for so many years.
