Alan Moore recently revealed that he has instructed DC Comics to donate his royalties from HBO's Watchmen adaptation to Black Lives Matter.
Moore confirmed he advised DC to pass on his cut of the revenues from all film and TV adaptations inspired by his works (including Watchmen) to BLM in an interview with The Telegraph. "I no longer wish [my royalties] to even be shared with [my co-creators]," he said. "I don't really feel, with the recent films, that they have stood by what I assumed were their original principles. So I asked for DC Comics to send all of the money from any future TV series or films to Black Lives Matter." Moore co-created Watchmen with artist Dave Gibbons in 1986, and the 12-issue series was soon hailed by critics and readers alike as one of the greatest superhero comics of all time. Ahsoka‘s Grand Admiral Thrawn will sound very familiar, now that it has been confirmed that Lars Mikkelsen, who voiced the villain in Star Wars Rebels, will return to play him on the live-action Star Wars series.
The casting was confirmed on Saturday at Star Wars Celebration in London — and in the wake of Mikkelsen repeatedly denying that he would reprise the role. (Just weeks ago, he told a Danish publication, “I haven’t heard anything about it…. [T]hey should have approached me, but they haven’t. So it must be someone else, unfortunately.”)

In a bid to reinvigorate the Star Wars film franchise, Lucasfilm has announced three new movies, as well as the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. The news came during the Star Wars Celebration event in London on Friday, where Ridley made a surprise appearance alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The movies don’t appear to be a classic Star Wars trilogy, as each is set in a different time period. Coming from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), the Rey-centered feature will pick up 15 years after Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Ridley’s fan-favorite character will be found coming into her role as a Jedi Master working to rebuild the Jedi order.
The script comes from Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), who took over screenwriting duties from Damon Lindelof (HBO’s Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) after the pair left the project in February. By taking on the project,...

The “Star Wars” movie future just came into sharper focus: Daisy Ridley’s Rey will be the center of the first “Star Wars” feature film since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced at Star Wars Celebration in London on Friday. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“Ms. Marvel”) will direct from a script by Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”). The film follows the events of “Rise of Skywalker,” and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order.
The project marks several major milestones for the franchise: Obaid-Chinoy is the first woman and the first person of color to direct a “Star Wars” movie. The Pakistani filmmaker won two Academy Awards for documentary short, in 2011 for “Saving Face” and in 2015 for “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness,” and she most recently directed two episodes of “Ms. Marvel” for Disney+.
“It’s just exciting,” Jon Favreau told Variety after the panel.

The Time War was an integral part of Russell T. Davies' 2005 Doctor Who revival, but legendary comic author Alan Moore first came up with the concept in 1981. Alan Moore, creator of such iconic graphic novels as Watchmen and V For Vendetta, cut his teeth writing back-up strips for Doctor Who Magazine. Moore wrote standalone stories that featured many of the Doctor's foes, including the Cybermen, the Autons, and the Ice Warriors. However, his most influential work was a trilogy of strips that depicted the very early history of Doctor Who's Time Lord society.
Alan Moore's three Gallifrey strips, "Star Death," "4-d War," and "Black Sun Rising" were illustrated by the artist David Lloyd, who would later collaborate with Moore on V For Vendetta. Moore's brief time working for Doctor Who Magazine came to an end when he left in solidarity with friend Steve Moore, who had been removed from Dwm's main comic strip.

Though his life and accomplishments were largely erased under Napoleon, the extraordinary figure at the center of Stephen Williams’ “Chevalier” really did exist. Born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the son of a white plantation owner and his Black slave, Joseph Bologne went on to excel in spheres rarely accessible to people of color in 18th-century French society. Here was a champion swordsman and celebrated musician invited to play his violin at Versailles, where Marie Antoinette reportedly accompanied him on the harpsichord.
So why has it taken so long for his story to be told?
The time certainly seems right to rediscover the Chevalier — an honorary title that reveals how high Bologne rose under France’s overtly racist Code Noir, as well as a fitting name for the film. A compelling example of Black excellence dating back even before the French Revolution, the English-language “Chevalier” doesn’t feel nearly...

While audiences eagerly await a proper first look at the film, star Cary Elwes is hyping up Zack Snyder's epic Rebel Moon scale. Reuniting Snyder with 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad and Army of the Dead co-scribe Shay Hatten, the sci-fi epic revolves around a young woman who is tasked with traveling the galaxy to find warriors to help protect a peaceful colony from a tyrannical army. Snyder has assembled a star-studded roster for Rebel Moon, including Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins.
Screen Rant recently spoke exclusively with Cary Elwes to discuss the sports biopic Sweetwater. After a work-in-progress version of Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic was screened at SXSW, audiences were pumped to see the whole thing. The first trailer for Hypnotic was released today, which gives us a taste of the psychological thriller starring Ben Affleck.
Ben Affleck stars as Danny Rourke, an Austin detective determined to find his missing daughter. Instead, he finds himself spiraling down a rabbit hole while investigating a series of reality-bending bank robberies where he will ultimately call into question his most basic assumptions about everything and everyone in his world. Rourke is aided by Diana Cruz (Alice Braga), an unnervingly gifted psychic, while he simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter (William Fichtner) – the one man he believes holds the key to finding the missing girl – only to discover more than he ever bargained for. With 17 of the last 20 DGA Award winners going on to secure the Oscar for Best Director, the Director’s Guild of America plays a pivotal role in who wins an Academy Award. Momentum is key for film’s grueling winter awards circuit, and now we’ll wait and see if Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert have enough to make it 18 of the last 21.
In TV, there is no waiting — not this year. While the DGA Awards can certainly play their part in the Emmy race — having boosted future darlings like “Succession,” “Watchmen,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” — the 2023 winners already had their shot at Emmy glory. Nominations may still prove valuable to freshman series like “Wednesday” and “The Bear” (not to mention “Better Call Saul’s” last chance to win its first Emmy), but Saturday night’s ceremony will have little to no effect on what’s next.

If you are reading this article and visit Collider with any regularity, you almost certainly know who Zack Snyder and James Gunn are. Snyder is the former music-video director who successfully crossed over to features, where he made his name on a string of visually striking and overly serious comic-book adaptations, including 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Gunn got his start working on low-budget horror films before also making the jump to superheroes, solidifying his A-list status with Marvel's fun and heartfelt Guardians of the Galaxy saga (the final installment of which opens in a few months). Both directors have, shall we say, passionate fan bases behind them – fan bases that now find themselves often butting heads because Snyder used to be the lead creative force behind the DC Comics cinematic universe before being jettisoned in favor of a new direction, while Gunn...

For those like me who pay way too much attention to these sorts of things, you may remember the news that filmmaker J.J. Abrams had signed an immensely profitable deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. This enabled him to write, produce, and direct various projects on both the big screen and small, with the freedom to sell certain projects to other distributors as well as producing original stories for Warner Bros. and HBO Max. Discerning readers may also recall that, in the years since, absolutely nothing has actually come from that high-profile agreement -- not for lack of trying, mind you. There was that double-whammy announcement of a "Justice League Dark" project and a spin-off of "The Shining" called "Overlook" that had nerds everywhere all hyped up. Unfortunately, those ultimately never came to fruition for various reasons, along with an incredibly expensive sci-fi series called "Demimonde."

“Duster,” an eight-episode drama from “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan, has been ordered to series by HBO Max, it was announced Thursday. The order comes almost three years after “Duster” was first revealed to be in development at the streamer in April 2021.
Additionally, Max unveiled the cast for the 1972-set series, with Rachel Hilson starring as Nina, a young Black FBI agent who journeys to the Southwest on an assignment to take down a crime syndicate. Josh Holloway, best known for playing Sawyer in Abrams’ ABC series “Lost,” stars opposite Hilson as Jim, a getaway driver recruited to help Nina on her mission; his casting was first reported by Variety in 2021.
“We are delighted to bring this high-voltage crime caper from the brilliant minds of J.J. Abrams and Latoya Morgan to the HBO Max audience,” HBO Max head of original content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement.

J.J. Abrams and HBO Max are officially putting a series into gear.
The streamer has picked up Duster, a 1970s-set drama from Abrams and Latoya Morgan (Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead). Rachel Hilson (Love, Victor, This Is Us) and Josh Holloway, who worked with Abrams on Lost, head the cast.
Duster is the first series to spring from a nine-figure film and TV deal Abrams’ Bad Robot company signed with WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) in 2019. In April 2020, Duster was one of three Bad Robot projects announced for the yet-to-launch HBO Max, along with The Shining offshoot Overlook and a Justice League Dark project. The latter two have since been scrapped (Bad Robot has shopped Overlook to other possible buyers), as has Abrams’ long-developing sci-fi series Demimonde (which was for the HBO parent channel) after concerns over its projected 200 million-plus budget.

After much anticipation, the new James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios has finally announced their upcoming film and TV slate. The goal is to create a giant connected shared story spread out across movies, TV, and even gaming. Characters will move fluidly in and out of animation and into live action, and there’s a special DC Elseworlds label to distinguish standalone efforts and visions (such as Todd Phillips’ R-rated Joker movies).

Despite scoring acclaim in the prior film, The Whale star Hong Chau is sharing some candid thoughts on her Oscar nomination following the infamous box office flop, Downsizing. Before starring in Brendan Fraser's comeback film, Chau finally gained some traction in the acting world with her role in the Matt Damon-led Downsizing as Vietnamese political dissident Ngoc Lan Tran. While the depiction of the character's thick accent and broken English saw some division, Chau ultimately was considered the standout star of the otherwise lackluster film and garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress, losing to I, Tonya's Allison Janney.
In a recent interview with The Independent, Hong Chau reflected on her Oscar nomination for The Whale and her feelings towards it. The star admitted to feeling strangely, especially when comparing it to what many thought would be her breakout project, the sci-fi dramedy Downsizing, which she...

While filming The Whale, Darren Aronofsky’s divisive new drama about a morbidly obese man, Hong Chau did something many would consider unforgivable: she smacked Brendan Fraser. Playing the caregiver to Fraser’s ailing Charlie – a man so stricken with grief that he’s eating himself to death – Chau wanted to convey someone at the very end of her tether. In a moment of improvisation, she slapped Fraser’s arm. It made Aronofsky wince. He cut the cameras and took Chau aside.

The promise of seeing two of the most exciting actors working today, Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler, square off in Dune: Part Two makes the sci-fi sequel even better. Dune: Part Two acts as the second half of Denis Villeneuve's two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's iconic novel, which has received a reputation for being "unadaptable". However, like several "unadaptable" novels such as Watchmen and Moneyball, Dune has been successfully transferred to the big screen. Released in 2021, Denis Villeneuve's Dune received critical acclaim and was successful enough at the box office, and on HBO Max, for Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel.
Despite Dune's immense success, Dune: Part Two promises to be even bigger in several ways. Not only is the sequel likely to have even better box office returns than the first, especially given that Dune received a simultaneous theatrical and streaming release, but also Dune: Part...

Creepypasta collides with pop music obsession in the new teaser for Swarm, an upcoming series from Donald Glover and Atlanta writer Janine Nabers. Glover is keeping busy with a role in the Mr. & Mrs. Smith television reboot, in addition to reprising his role as Troy for the highly-anticipated Community movie. But since Atlanta ended its run late last year, and with the cast and crew moving on to other projects, there's been a void in the very specific type of show that the FX show was at its very best — a genre mashup that was hard to quantify and even harder to look away from.
When it debuts on March 17 on Prime Video, Swarm will look to fill that Atlanta gap.
With a tagline of "Murder. Sex. Music." and a story that is described as revolving around a "Beyoncé-like figure," the teaser is just as notable for essentially serving up several horror-tinged moments.

The production of "Titanic" has gotten plenty of attention for its record-setting 200 million budget, but as the film's scheduled July 1997 release date approached, the public's attention was equally as locked onto the schedule delays as much as the ballooning costs. This article contains spoilers about "Knock at the Cabin."
We all know that there's no such thing as a 1:1 adaptation. Even something like Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," which brings exact panels to life complete with the original comic book dialogue, futzed with the ending. There are still some comic book fans who are angry about the lack of giant squid to this very day.
It's to be expected that any adaptation is going to come with some changes. Reading a book is different from watching a movie, after all, and a good screenwriter will know when to change things up for a visual storytelling medium and when the original text had it right. Steve Desmond, Michael Sherman, and M. Night Shyamalan's take on Paul Tremblay's "The Cabin at the End of the World" is very faithful ... until it isn't. And then it very much changes the core...

Sometimes, love takes time. At least, it looks like it does in the new Andy Samberg-Jean Smart rom-com "42.6 Years." In the film, Samberg plays a young man who agrees to be cryogenically frozen to save his life. He wakes up 42.6 years later and is physically unchanged - but he's all alone. So he seeks out his ex-girlfriend, who did continue to get older, played by Smart. The movie is in the works at Amazon Studios. The Hollywood Reporter first reported on the movie. Amazon Studios did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.
According to THR, Samberg came up with the idea and cowrote the film with Seth Reiss, a writer on "Late Night With Seth Meyers." Reiss also cowrote the script for 2022's "The Menu," which became a box office success as it blended horror with social commentary. Reiss received a...

Superhero movies dominate the movie industry, but very rarely do they actually adapt the comic books that gave them life in the first place — and when we do get a movie that is influenced by or tried to adapt a comic book, they are often changed to the point where its hard to recognize the influence. Movies like "Captain America: Civil War," and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," only take the most barebones premise from the comics and forget about everything else. When it comes to Marvel especially, they have now built such an intricate universe that there is no way to do 1:1 adaptations of the comics.
This is why James Gunn's plans for new DC movies are exciting, with the idea that they seem to be taking a bigger inspiration from comics or at least crediting them to the point where trades are selling out.

Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. Although this day marks just the beginning of an ongoing battle for equality, Juneteenth represents an opportunity to celebrate the joy of the Black experience as much as the hardship. And TheWrap’s got a great list of films to get that celebration started.
Once you’ve checked out some of the more educational Juneteenth-related fare, like “13th” or “I Am Not Your Negro,” consider adding some of these flicks to your streaming list.
“Soul” (Disney+)
“Soul,” Pixar’s first film to feature an African-American protagonist, follows Joe Gardener, a middle school music teacher with dreams of becoming a jazz star. When Joe dies prematurely before receiving his big break, he gets a second chance at his fantasy when accidentally enters the Great Before — a place that prepares unborn souls for real life. Andy Samberg and Jean Smart have teamed up for a unique May-December romantic comedy titled 42.6 Years, which is in development at Amazon Studios.
Craig Gillespie, the filmmaker behind Cruella and I, Tonya, is on board to direct the feature.
Samberg came up with the original idea and co-wrote the story with Seth Reiss, a writer on Late Night With Seth Meyers who is coming off a WGA Award nomination for The Menu. Reiss then wrote the script, which landed on the 2022 Black List.
The story centers on a young man (Samberg) who, in order to save his life, undergoes an experimental procedure in which he’s cryogenically frozen. When he wakes up 42.6 years later, physically unchanged thanks to being frozen, he finds himself alone in a future with no one to turn to but his ex-girlfriend, who is now much older than him (and played by Smart).

It should come as no surprise that character actor Tim Blake Nelson — who led the western anthology film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and played the unforgettable Looking Glass in the HBO series Watchmen — has written a novel. After all, he’s always been the bookish one on set. Exclusive: Following a competitive bidding war, Warner Bros TV has landed the Mac Smullen spec pilot Souvenir, Alaska. Carly Wray will exec produce and oversee development, while Lee Toland Krieger will exec produce and direct the pilot. Wbtv, where both have overall deals, had no comment on the project.
Sources say four other networks were chasing the pilot before Wbtv put in the winning bid. While plot details are being kept under wraps, sources close to the pilot describe it as a cross between a Stephen King and Michael Crichton story.
Wray has become one of the more seasoned producers in television working on such shows as Westworld, The Leftovers and Watchmen, for which she won an Emmy. She is repped by WME and Grandview.
Krieger’s past credits include You, Shadow and Bone and Superman & Louis. He is repped by WME and Anonymous Content.

This post contains spoilers for the first four episodes of "The Last of Us."
In today's arts and entertainment landscape, it seems that all bets are off when it comes to defining a work and its intentions: the terms "remake," "adaptation," "reboot," "reimagining," "rebootquel" and more are tossed around willy-nilly, with new descriptors being Frankensteined together every year. It's a reaction to the rampant increase of stories being told, retold, and revisited as Hollywood and its ilk seek to minimize risk by exploiting material they believe to be pre-sold. It's a real catch-22, to make something old seem new again.
HBO's "The Last of Us" series is being touted as an adaptation, and on the face of it this appears to be the correct term, given that the story first appeared in one medium (video games) and is now moving to another (live-action television). Yet, in execution, it's not so cut and dried.

A look back at the life of the Comedian reveals that one popular Watchmen fan theory is actually completely wrong. Before Watchmen: Comedian #1 shows that Edward Blake is actually innocent of high-profile murder that's been pinned on him for years.
The world of Watchmen is one much like the real-world, only with the added presence of superheroes. The addition of costumed adventurers might not seem like a big deal, but it actually led to a massive diversion in the timeline, with hero teams like the Minutemen or the Crimebusters getting involved in real-world events. One Watchmen character, the Comedian, is one of the few heroes to work for the government, leading him to have one of the greatest influences on Watchmen's diverging history. In fact, at one point in the original series, he jokes about being behind the death of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, leading fans to theorize it's actually true.

Anticipation has run wild regarding the 8-10 year plan being overseen by DC Studios CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn. Future Of DC Universe and Upcoming Slate From DC Studios Reveals First Chapter – ‘Gods and Monsters’
DC Fans received big news on Tuesday when James Gunn announced plans for DC Studios.
James Gunn and Peter Safran have unveiled the first ten interconnected DC Studios projects—five movies and five HBO Max TV series. All ten of them are set within the same shared universe and will frequently share characters. However, while not included below, there will be films set outside the shared continuity—like the already announced Joker: Folie à Deux from director Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman sequel.
“The Dcu’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse,” explains Safran. “And if something isn’t Dcu, we’re going to make that very clear. James Mangold may be bringing one of DC’s creepiest heroes to life. The “Logan” and “Ford v. Ferrari” director is reportedly in early talks to tackle “Swamp Thing,” one of the upcoming films from DC Studio’s first chapter of movies under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s command, THR first reported Wednesday.
It’s unclear whether Mangold would both write and direct the film or his exact involvement. Mangold did however seem to confirm his interest on his Twitter, via a post with a panel from the character’s comic series, drawn by co-creator Bernie Wrightson. The post was also retweeted by Gunn.

A solemn moment in American history managed to change everything Watchmen fans thought they knew about the Comedian. Before Watchmen: Comedian #1 reinforces the idea that the ordinarily cynical and callous Edward Blake isn't as far gone as readers may think he is.
Watchmen is a story that presents a world of real-life superheroes and the effect they have on the world around them. One of the most infamous characters in the story is the Comedian, who is known for his iconic smiley face badge and his terrifying brutalism. Of all the heroes that exist in Watchmen, the Comedian is one of the most unconventional. Jaded and nihilistic, Edward Blake openly expresses his thoughts on the pointlessness of the efforts of superheroes, especially in the atomic age. Not to mention, Comedian also brutalized his own teammates such as Silk Spectre, leading many characters to see him as an inhuman monster.

The highly-anticipated second season of “Peacemaker” has been delayed, DC co-ceo James Gunn revealed during a presentation on the upcoming Dcu slate that TheWrap attended along with a small group of reporters.
Gunn said that he’s been too busy writing a new “Superman” movie and the upcoming animated DC series “Creature Commandos” and, as a result, “Peacemaker” Season 2 got pushed. But not to worry — a previously announced spinoff based on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will help kick off a new era of Dcu storytelling.
“Viola is still playing Waller and she has Team Peacemaker in this,” Gunn noted. “This is really a continuation from Peacemaker.”
“Waller” will be written by Christal Henry (“Watchmen”) and Jeremy Carver (“Doom Patrol”) and executive produced by Gunn and Safran.

Less than a week after the news broke that Doom Patrol would be coming to an end with Season 4, the series' creator Jeremy Carver has already found his next project within the DC Universe. At a super-secret meeting to reveal the upcoming slate of DC projects, newly minted DC Studios co-heads Peter Safran and James Gunn revealed that Carver would be teaming up with Watchmen writer Christal Henry to pen the upcoming Peacemaker spin-off Waller. As the title suggests, Waller will see Viola Davis return as the titular Amanda Waller—a role that she has played across several projects.

The future is finally here for DC fans. After years of false starts from a parade of creatives, and months of teases, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran finally shared their vision for DC movies and TV series going forward, christened, simply enough as the Dcu. The pair outlined what they called “the first part of the first chapter” of the Dcu, with that first chapter known as “Gods and Monsters.” It’s a combination of five films and five HBO Max series which will have story elements that weave between each other, and ultimately lay the foundation for a new, cohesive DC Universe.
Of course, it’s not as simple as that (it never is). There are still the four DC movies coming out this year, which Gunn and Safran are playing coy about, including who will stick around as their current characters. However, Gunn said that...

After weeks of chatter and rumor, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally unveiled 10 different projects that compose the first chapter of a long-term, interconnected universe of movies and shows based on the DC comics characters. Among them: new Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing feature films, as well as new series built around the Green Lantern, the origins of Wonder Woman’s birthplace, and one centered around Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller character.
These new projects, formally unveiled on Tuesday after a Monday press conference and presentation, form part of the DC Universe (Dcu). Each film and series is currently in various states of development and will either be theatrically released features via Warner Bros. or HBO Max series, set to roll out over a span of two to three years. These plans follow the release of the four upcoming DC films still slated for release this year,...

Trigger Warning. This article mentions suicide.
Zack Snyder has long since put the Dcu behind him, and it is time audiences follow suit and forget about the return of the SnyderVerse. Since the release of Man of Steel in 2013, Snyder has been synonymous with the films of the Dceu. However, with James Gunn and Peter Safran moving towards a complete Dcu reboot, the decade-long legacy of Snyder with DC will be erased.
However, Zack Snyder effectively left the so-called "SnyderVerse" behind in 2017 after the tragic suicide of his daughter Autumn. He only briefly returned in 2021 to release Zack Snyder's Justice League as fan service for those upset with Joss Whedon's cut of the film. Despite campaigns from fans to get the SnyderVerse back on track, Synder has since put those days behind him.
