Max announced this morning that The Watchers, Warner Bros/New Line’s supernatural thriller from first-time feature filmmaker Ishana Night Shyamalan, will begin streaming globally, exclusively on Max, on Friday, August 30.
The film hits streaming following a disappointing theatrical release kicking off in June, which resulted in less than $33 million in box office receipts.
An adaptation of the 2021 gothic horror novel by A.M. Shine, starring Dakota Fanning, who’s currently up for an Emmy for her work on Netflix’s miniseries Ripley, The Watchers tells the story of Mina (Fanning), a 28-year-old artist who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers that are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night. You can’t see them, but they see everything.

M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which received a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. (You can read our review Here and watch our interviews with the director and cast members Here.) The movie did not enjoy the sort of box office success many of the elder Shyamalan’s films have, drawing in just over $25 million worldwide so far. But maybe it will reach a wider audience with its digital release, which is just one week away. Media Play News reports that on June 28th, three weeks after it reached theatres, The Watchers will be available to watch in the comfort of your own home. The 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release will follow on August 27th.

There’s a simplicity to writer/director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s feature debut, The Watchers, an adaptation of the novel by A.M. Shine. The horror fairy tale traps four strangers in a mysterious forest untethered from reality, where they must observe a handful of straightforward rules to appease the inhuman things that come to observe them every night. It’s a setup that presents fertile ground to mine chills from Irish folklore and psychological distress, but Shyamalan gets too caught up in mythological exposition to instill any tension or scares.
The Watchers follows Mina (Dakota Fanning), an aloof loner who fled from her past traumas and mistakes to Ireland, where she doodles away at her quiet job at a pet store. Mina’s past remains a closely guarded secret, but it’s clear the distance has done nothing to close those wounds. Naturally, she finds herself confronting her past in...

Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.
It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.
Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.
Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

By the time Halloween wraps up, most people have tucked away their pumpkins and spider webs in favour of colourful wreaths and Santa figurines. For horror fans, it means Krampus and blood covered snow now take centre stage. The holiday of Christmas naturally lends itself to the horror genre, spawning favourites that include Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Rare Exports, and more. However, many films are too gruesome for younger people to enjoy.
To let children in on the festive and frightful fun, here is a variety of age-appropriate Christmas horror film and television specials the entire family can enjoy.
Creeped Out: Splinta Claws (2019)
Season 2, Episode 10
“Everyone knows there are nice children as well as naughty. But are there good and bad Santas as well?” This question is posed in the opening of the “Splinta Claws” episode of the anthology series Creeped Out on Netflix, which originally released in the UK and Canada.

Whether you generally enjoy immersing yourself in bone-chilling experiences or usually steer clear of the horror genre, this time of the year just calls for something eerie. Your favorite spooky holiday is here, and chances are, you’re looking for a horror marathon to celebrate the day to the fullest. Now, binge-watching horror films or even a series of cult classics might not always cut it. There’s something about diving neck-deep into what’s terrorizing a bunch of characters in a show that really makes you a part of their bizarre world. You’ve got nothing to lose. And even if you come to care about the characters in a show and empathize with their plight, horror shows have a way of pinning you down to your couch and pulling you into a frightful narrative. There’s no easy way to point out why we obsess over this genre as much as we do.

Guillermo del Toro’s “Cabinet of Curiosities” brings back the underrated anthology series host trope that helps celebrate the nature of storytelling.
When it comes to the versatile nature of anthology shows, one of the biggest selling points of the genre is that every episode tells a completely original story. It’s easy to get lost in the stories, but the best anthology shows understand that the act of storytelling itself is just as important to the experience. Stories can be found anywhere, but the process of being a storyteller is akin to being human. Man has been telling stories since its very existence and without storytellers, society would be left in arrested development. Granted, every piece of television technically tells a story, but it’s anthology shows that have the rare tradition of engaging with the audience on a personal level as if they’re trading stories around a campfire,...

Millennials are forced to fight to the death in the upcoming horror/thriller movie appropriately titled Game of Death. From Cleopatra Entertainment, the movie pits a group of innocent and care-free youngsters in one of the most horrifying situations imaginable when they're tasked with killing innocent people in their small town, otherwise their heads will all explode. Basically, it feels a little like Battle Royale meets Jumanji with a modern update, although it appears to be much more violent and yet oddly amusing with its results. You can see what I mean by watching the official trailer below.
Game of Death follows a group of seven millennial pals looking to kill an afternoon by playing what appears to be a harmless game, only to find out it's in fact a doorway into a deadly game of "kill or be killed." According to the official synopsis, the friends "quickly realize that if they don't murder people,...

Grimmfest 2018, a celebration of the horror genre, sweeps over Manchester, England for the tenth time starting on October 4th and the lineup is pretty exciting. The recently revealed lineup features a fully remastered screening of Splintered (from Grimmfest festival directors Simeon Halligan and Rachel Richardson-Jones), the regional premiere of Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, the horror anthology Nightmare Cinema, a Barbara Crampton Lifetime Achievement Award presentation, and more!
Press Release: This year, Grimmfest, Manchester's Festival of Horror, Cult and Fantastic Film, celebrates its 10th anniversary. Get ready for decimation, with the darkest, deadliest line-up yet of wild, weird, witty, thrilling, chilling, blood-spilling movies, every one of them a premiere or cult classic of one kind or another, many with cast and crew in attendance.
But Grimmfest will also be looking back, a little nervously over its shoulder, perhaps, at a decade spent delivering top-quality cinematic carnage to the movie-goers of Manchester,...

We chatted to director Steve Hughes about making Cbbc’s eerie anthology series Creeped Out and Doctor Who…
TV and film-making is an arduous, competitive business. Unless a project is particularly close to the hearts of those making it, it’s unlikely to survive the process. Talent and a good idea can get you part of the way, but it takes really, really loving that idea to drive it through to the end, attracting more talent and love along the way.

Cbbc’s Creeped Out buzzes with love from the people who make it. A thirteen-part eerie anthology series inspired by Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, it tells emotionally resonant horror, sci-fi and fantasy-tinged tales that are suitable for kids and irresistible to adults.

“Nods to Spielberg, Zemeckis, Joe Dante, even John Carpenter…” Director Steve Hughes (Doctor Who, Wolfblood) is telling me about the first time he read a script for Cbbc anthology series Creeped Out. “I remember begging ‘you have to let me direct this – it’s my dream job!’”
The scripts, Hughes recalls, had a real flavour of Amazing Stories (“one of my favourite TV series from the 80s”) and “were clearly written by people who loved the same films as TV shows as I did.” Those people were Bede Blake and Robert Butler, movie nerds through and through.

“Oh! The candy-striper vampire one in Are You Afraid Of The Dark? And the clown, The Ghastly Grinner!”
“The magician one in Amazing Stories. Definitely.”
“There’s one about a pool and this horrible, fleshy skeleton came out of it and grabbed these kids. Still now, if you Google it, it’s one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever seen, I can’t believe it was ever on telly.”
“The Never-Ending Story had something called The Nothing, that was really nothing, literally and figuratively. It stuck with me and freaked me out as a kid, the idea that things were disappearing and nothing was in its place.
