Max announced this morning that The Watchers, Warner Bros/New Line’s supernatural thriller from first-time feature filmmaker Ishana Night Shyamalan, will begin streaming globally, exclusively on Max, on Friday, August 30.

The film hits streaming following a disappointing theatrical release kicking off in June, which resulted in less than $33 million in box office receipts.

An adaptation of the 2021 gothic horror novel by A.M. Shine, starring Dakota Fanning, who’s currently up for an Emmy for her work on Netflix’s miniseries Ripley, The Watchers tells the story of Mina (Fanning), a 28-year-old artist who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. It’s not something I came up with; it’s something she came up with. That created a different engine for me, when I was directing those scenes for her.

Updated, 12:50 Pm: Ishana Night Shyamalan’s debut film is on the move, again. And the new date is a familiar one. Two months after Warner Bros. shuffled The Watchers back by a week to the June 14-16 Fathers Day frame, the pic is headed back to its original June 7 date.

It’ll have some action-packed company that Friday, going against Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the long-gestating fourth film in the nearly 30-year-old franchise. Lionsgate’s The Crow remake also was set for June 7, but that pic flew away from the date about three weeks ago and now is set for August 23.

Warners Bros. is hoping to cater to a female audience with The Watchers.

Also opening wide on June 7 is Vertical Entertainment’s The Exorcism directed by Joshua John Miller.

Exclusive: MGM’s Orion Pictures and Plan B Entertainment have set Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, Michelle McLeod and Ben Whishaw to join Frances McDormand in writer/director Sarah Polley’s feature adaptation of Miriam Toews’ bestselling novel Women Talking. FX has picked up to series Reservation Dogs, a half-hour comedy series from Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi.

It was announced by Nick Grad, President, Original Programming, FX Entertainment.

Reservation Dogs follows four Native teenagers in rural Oklahoma who spend their days committing crime... and fighting it.

The series opener, penned by Harjo and Waititi, was directed by Harjo and shot in Okmulgee, Okla.

The eight-episode series will be executive produced by Harjo, Waititi and Garrett Basch. Reservation Dogs is produced by FX Productions.

The pilot was written by Barking Water and Four Sheets to the Wind director Harjo, who also directed, and Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director Waititi. It is the latter’s latest project at FX with What We Do in the Shadows, the TV spinoff of vampire feature comedy, renewed for a third season. Millennials are forced to fight to the death in the upcoming horror/thriller movie appropriately titled Game of Death. From Cleopatra Entertainment, the movie pits a group of innocent and care-free youngsters in one of the most horrifying situations imaginable when they're tasked with killing innocent people in their small town, otherwise their heads will all explode. There were three first-time winners at the ceremony in London, including Emily Burnett who won the BAFTA for Performer for her role in The Dumping Ground; Lindsey Russell for Presenter for Blue Peter; and Bella Ramsay for her performance in The Worst Witch in the Young Performer category.

“The Red Harlequin,” the best-selling Italian young adult fantasy series, is leaping from the page to the screen, with series creator Roberto Ricci planning a TV adaptation as he begins to develop the IP across platforms.

Ricci’s Pantomimus Media presented the story bible and pilot script at Mipcom and will now do the same at Rome’s Mia market, where it has been selected for the drama series pitching competition.

“The Red Harlequin” is a Ya fantasy series set in an ancient world where superstitions abound and everyone lives behind masks. The inhabitants, or Chromes, are divided by colors and constantly at war with each other, while living in fear of the terrifying creatures known as Harlequins.

TV and film-making is an arduous, competitive business. Unless a project is particularly close to the hearts of those making it, it’s unlikely to survive the process. Talent and a good idea can get you part of the way, but it takes really, really loving that idea to drive it through to the end, attracting more talent and love along the way.

“Nods to Spielberg, Zemeckis, Joe Dante, even John Carpenter…” Director Steve Hughes (Doctor Who, Wolfblood) is telling me about the first time he read a script for Cbbc anthology series Creeped Out. “I remember begging ‘you have to let me direct this – it’s my dream job!’”

The scripts, Hughes recalls, had a real flavour of Amazing Stories (“one of my favourite TV series from the 80s”) and “were clearly written by people who loved the same films as TV shows as I did.” Those people were Bede Blake and Robert Butler, movie nerds through and through.

We've grown accustomed to the list of Netflix new releases for each month swelling but the new releases for October 2018 are something else entirely. Netflix is going to follow up what was already a packed September with original releases with a month that has even more high profile originals.

Netflix favorites, Big Mouth, Daredevil, and Castlevania all debut new seasons this month. In addition to those though comes the launching of several other surefire hits. The Haunting of Hill House, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Bodyguard all begin in October.
